Returning to school

One of the key messages to manage the risks of Covid-19 is to do everything practical to avoid the introduction of Covid-19 into the school. If infection is not introduced it cannot spread. The risk of spreading the infection once introduced exists in all interpersonal interactions; student-student, teacher-teacher, teacher-student and student-teacher and must be managed in all settings.

A range of essential control measures have been implemented to reduce the risk of the spread of Covid-19 virus and to protect the safety health and welfare of staff, pupils, parents and visitors as far as possible within the school. The control measures shall continue to be reviewed and updated as required on an ongoing basis.

It is critical that staff, pupils, parents and visitors are aware of and adhere to the control measures outlined and that they fully co-operate with all health and safety requirements.

Below you will see the classes for next year. Each teacher will be in the same room as last year.

I regret to inform parents that at this time we will be unable to facilitate the breakfast club. It is something we were looking forward to introducing in our school but under the current guidelines that the school needs to work under we are unable to provide this service without breaching the social distancing guidelines.

The breakfast club is something we remain committed to introducing and once it is safe to do so we will be in contact with parents again on this issue.

2 to 3 Club:The after school club for Junior and Senior Infants will be going ahead

(subject to numbers) as these children will only mix with children from their own classroom. We will begin the club when the Junior Infants finish their early finish days. Application forms will be available when the school reopens.

Arrival and departure

Schools must limit interaction on arrival and departure from school. For this reason, there will be two entrance points for the different classes.

The western big gate and the eastern turnstile gate. The two gates will be open each morning from 8:50am to 9:10am and children will go straight to their classroom using their individual classroom routes.

To ease traffic congestion and to lessen congregating at the gates we will stagger the evening departure times using the same gates they used in the morning;

Appointments may be made to visit the school for essential purposes.A contact tracing log will need to be filled out for each visit.

Physical DistancingChildren from Junior Infants to second class are not required to physical distance. Children from 3rd to 6th class are expected to keep a distance of 1m where possible.Each classroom will be a “Bubble”. Contact between bubbles will be avoided as far as possible.Some classrooms may be divided into groups or “Pods”. These children will sit and work together.Staff will try to maintain physical distance from children when they can and will wear face coverings and other PPE when needed.

What you can do to prepare Practice washing hands properly with soap for 20 seconds. Make sure

your child knows how to dry his/her hands thoroughly. Children should also know how to use hand sanitiser correctly and that it

should not be ingested. Teach your child correct cough and sneeze etiquette. Cough or sneeze

into a tissue or into your elbow. Put the tissue in the bin and wash/sanitise your hands.

Make sure that your child can independently open and close his/her own lunchbox and bottle, coat and shoes. Shoes with laces are not recommended for younger children unless they are very capable of tying their own laces.

Short sleeved shirts/blouses/polo shirts will make it easier for washing hands properly as the long sleeves with buttons can be very awkward especially for the younger children.

Hand HygieneChildren will perform hand hygiene regularly during the school day;

On arrival at school Before eating and drinking After a cough/sneeze After playing outdoors When hands are physically dirty

Hand sanitiser dispensers will be installed throughout the school.

Please make sure that your child has thoroughly washed his/her hands before coming to school in the morning.

Bathroom RoutinesTo limit interaction in the bathrooms;

1st/2nd/3rd class boys and girls will now use the bathroom at the bottom of the corridor near the staffroom.

4th/5th/6th class boys and girls will use the bathroom at the top of the corridor near the office.

The boys and girls in each room will be taken to the bathroom in separate groups and supervised at specific times during the day -before and after breaks.We will be trying to limit the use of bathrooms during class time.

Please make sure your child uses the bathroom before coming to school each morning.

Schoolbags/Lunchboxes/ BooksEnsure that your child does not have any unnecessary items in their schoolbag.

Choose lunchboxes, bottles, schoolbags, pencil cases that are easy to clean.

Ensure that your child’s schoolbag and pencil case are wiped down each day.

Ensure that your child’s lunchbox and bottle are washed every day.

Junior and Senior Infants do not need to bring a pencil case to school as a pencil, rubber and crayons will be provided for them.

Please ensure that ALL books and copies are covered with a plastic covering as they may need to be cleaned frequently.

LunchesPlease make sure that your child can open his/her own lunchbox and bottle and that they can open each item in the lunchbox independently as staff will not be able to do this anymore to avoid cross-contamination.

Some items such as yoghurts, frubes, juice cartons, capri-suns can be extremely difficult for children to open.

Also some children have great difficulty peeling fruit so it might be a good idea to have it pre-peeled.

To avoid unnecessary movement around the classroom going to and from the bin, all wrappings from lunches will be left in the lunchbox or a ziplock bag and disposed of at home.
