Fiona Pierson, Principal [email protected]

Welcome to our Summer Newsletter. As Principal of Colchester Academy, I have the privilege of seeing the excellent work and achievements of our young people. From GCSE Art pieces to Year 7 Drama performances, from Year 10 food practical to all of the students representing Colchester Academy in sporting and academic competitions, I am always proud to see our young people working so hard to achieve their goals and fulfil their ambitions.

Colchester Academy has continued to make profound pro-gress this academic year. A successful OFSTED inspection moved the Academy out for the Inadequate category, but with greater significance, we secured a Good grade for behaviour and personal development/student welfare. Attendance at Colchester Academy is 94.6%, a secure indication students are dedicated to fulfilling their potential with us. However, more significant than these facts and figures is the attitude of our young people. It is overwhelming to see these young people develop into mature, respectful and open minded individuals.

As we approach the end of another school year, we say a fond farewell to the following staff and wish them well in their new ventures:

Hayley Bray - Teacher of Humanities Natalie O’Neill - Finance Assistant (maternity leave) Suzie Carpenter - Assistant Principal Paul Rogers - Technology Technician Chris Evans - Teacher of Geography Jose Ros - Teacher of MFL David Evans - Exam Invigilator Steve Rose - Teacher of Maths Anna Geater—Teacher of English Donna Stockwell - Exam Invigilator Phil Merriott - Teacher of Science Steve Taylor - Teacher of Humanities

I am pleased to report that despite the recruitment crisis that has been felt nationally and by many local schools, Colchester Academy is fully staffed with subject specialists from September. We welcome the following new staff who will be joining us:

Alice Baker - Teacher of Geography Carlos Mendoza - Teacher of MFL Irina Brown - Finance Assistant (maternity cover) Alex Meredith - Teacher of Maths Dona Devassy - Teacher of Science Sonia Pearson—LSA Interventions Lead Natacha Easter - Teacher of MFL Mark St Claire - Teacher of Science Gillian Hawkins - Library Co-ordinator Kate Warburton - Counsellor Eleanor Hyde - Assistant Team Leader English Alexandra Wilkinson - Teacher of English Sinead McCarron - Teacher of History Konstantin Zlatarev - Teacher of Maths

We also congratulate the following members of staff on their recent promotions:- Kyle Balcombe - Technology Technician, Emma Casdale - Year Leader, Faye Edwards - Assistant Team Leader Science, Ben Jones - Year Leader, Lauren Jones - Year Leader and Nadia Millis—Office Supervisor.

As another year passes, I encourage our young people and staff alike to reflect on the past 12 months. Take time to celebrate the successes we have achieved by working together, the positive changes and turns we have made by showing a joint vision. I also encourage the opportunity to use our experience to direct our future path next year to reach higher expectations to achieve what we all deserve and that is the very best.

I would like to thank all my staff at Colchester Academy for their hard work and support this year. I would like to thank all families who have supported our young people and finally the young people of Colchester Academy; I would like to thank them for making this a truly great school.

I wish you all a restful and well deserved summer break and look forward with great enthusiasm to achieving our vision next year.

Mersea Trip 2016 Emma Ingate, Lead Practitioner English [email protected]

On Monday 11 July, 47 students and 5 (very brave) staff set off for a three day, two night adventure to Mersea Island Youth Camp. During the three days we climbed, whizzed, tunnelled, cycled, dangled, jumped, ran and ate to our heart’s content. It was awesome! As always, our students made us proud. They were complimented by the instructors for their listening, positive attitude, teamwork and courage. Thank you to all the parents, staff and students who supported the trip. Now, let’s all get some sleep!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Emma Ingate, Director of Specialisms [email protected]

On the 1 and 2 of July, twelve Colchester Academy students (and one from St Benedict’s High School!) set out to complete their Bronze Qualifying Expedition. We travelled to Saxmundham in Suffolk and stayed at the beautiful Marsh Farm Campsite. Our group was assessed by Lesley West, Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator - Mid and North East Essex. She was impressed with how our groups worked together, their excellent navigation and their camp craft skills. At the end of the two days, all of our participants qualified. We have twelve very impressive Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Holders: Rebecca Dennis, Emily Rowley, Dansiga Navadas, Neve Saupe, Kaylee Boughton, Connor Simpson, Owen Stocking, Elise Lauenborg, Shauna Thompson, Byron Bullen, Harry Arnot, and Callum Batt. Thank you to Diane Paton and Karl Balcombe for their continuing support.

Dance Rio

I enjoyed dancing at the Colchester United Community Stadium. It was once in a life time opportunity. I loved watching the football match. I also enjoyed dancing at the Essex Cricket ground. I had so much fun at both events. Olivia Wallace

I really enjoyed doing the dance at the Colchester United Community Stadium. I have met new people and we all had fun. I wish we could do it all again. I had fun dancing at the Essex Cricket ground too. Trisha Thug

On Saturday 23 April I went to the Colchester United Community Stadium with the Dance Group from the Academy. We had to wear bright yellow and blue tops and black bottoms and any shoes. When we got there we all had one big final rehearsal with the leader Jen, the one who put it all together. Jen then introduced us to our Dance Captain Lauren, before we went to see where we were sitting. We were sitting right at the top of the Stadium and I was scared of heights but I was alright. The dance we performed was put together by the Harlow College. Tia Askew

On 30 May 2016, a group of Year 10 History students travelled to Berlin. The students had to arrive at the Academy by 4.30am. The sky was black and the air was cold. Perfect weather for travelling! We all clambered onto the coach and said goodbye to our parents and then drove off into the sunrise. Berlin here we come! 45 minutes later we were at London Stansted Airport, searching for our Tour Guide, Andy. However, there was no missing him as he was so tall. We grabbed some breakfast and waited for our flight to arrive. Eventually, it arrived and we all climbed on-board. Some of us had never flown before so it was quite scary however, we all made it through safe and sound. Once we arrived in Berlin, we transferred to a coach where we than travelled to our hotel. On the way, we couldn’t help but notice the beautiful architecture of the town and how pretty everything looked. We also drove past some monuments such as the Victory Column. Even though we were in a bus, we could all feel the importance of it. We later arrived at our hotel and dropped off our bags. Next, we started our walking tour of ‘The Rise of the Nazi Party’. Our first stop, The Reichstag. As we walked up the Reichstag everyone stopped for a moment to admire the view—a gigantic Palace which seemed out of place as it was not modern like the rest of the city was. Next, we went to the Brandenberg Gate and a few memorials such as the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. We also went to a parking lot which seemed strange at first. We then learned that this was where Hitler’s bunker used to be which was quite amazing. Later than night we headed to a restaurant to eat where the food was great.

Berlin 2016

Slowly we headed back to our hotel, however, on the way back we encountered a storm. Quickly we ran under some cover and admired the storm. Lightning flashed across the sky. The thunder roared aggressively and the rain fell down. After around ten minutes, the rain settled down and we finally headed home to our hotel to sleep. Early the next morning we awoke and got ready for the emotional day ahead. We got on the coach and first headed towards Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. The first thing we noticed was the sign on the front of the gates ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’. We entered and saw all of the buildings which still were in good condition. The whole experience was very saddening yet insightful and we all learned a lot from the experience. Next we went to the Olympic Stadium which was a lot happier. However, there still was a lot of history to be learned. A meal and a nice sleep was to follow. Next morning, we packed our bags and left them in the hotel reception before leaving to go to the Stasi Prison. This was also a very large eye opener as we were able to realise what really happened at the time. We then went to a Soviet Memorial which, in my opinion, was the best part of the entire trip. The immensity and history behind it was amazing. The main statute at the memorial was huge which added to the importance of the whole thing. And finally, we walked the length of some of the Berlin Wall. It was incredible, all of the different drawings with their own stories. Unfortunately, it was now time to leave to go back to England. We got on the coach to the airport, boarded the plane then flew home to England. Overall, the experience was unforgetable and was a real eye opener.

Food Technology

Monica.Rys-Hand, Year Leader [email protected]

Well, what another busy term it’s been in Food Technology. Our Year 11 students completed their practical and written coursework pieces and we launched into the preparation lesson for their final GCSE exam. I sent each student off onto their revision with their own individual Food Technology Revision bags which fully equipped them for their task ahead, even including a pen, pencil and a highlighter….just in case!! They each also received a certificate and an engraved spatula award.

The practical success of our Year 11’s were closely followed by some amazing Year 10 exam pieces. Students demonstrated a great deal of imagination, creativity and skill. Well done Year 10 Food Technologists and good luck for Year 11.

Our Key Stage 3 students continue to show great flare and enthusiasm for the subject, many of whom

‘go that extra mile’ in all they do….a key to success!

Year 7’s demonstrating excellent precision knife skills whilst completing their Year 7 course on basic food preparation skills and techniques.

Page 13: to view newsletter

Year 8 students have focussed on developing a wider range of food preparation skills based on cultural food products.

Year 9 students have started on the Food Preparation and Nutrition course, with the focus on pastry products. Excellent work Year 9!

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGYDESIGN & TECHNOLOGY In the Technology Department we have been working hard to create a new, exciting syllabus for the students, so they can be more inventive and to learn some valuable skills for later life. They have been working hard on a number of new projects and the results have been amazing.

Year 7 Desk Tidy Project

Year 7 have been creating a desk tidy to hold a number of different items that might be found on the a desk, they have then customised it to suit their taste with different finishes. They have each used a variety of materials including woods and plastics and have shaped them using both machine and hand tools. The students them used the laser cutter to cut their name or a picture to complement their work. Again, the results have been amazing and students have created high quality pieces which I hope they will keep.

Carys Wilson Karis Badu Tyegan Slaymaker

The Year 7’s also had enough time to create a wall clock, they could chose to make any design they wished, here is some of the fantastic work they have created. The students were very proud of their work.

7y/ta3 Well done Blake Hardcastle and Connor Vaughan for their hard work in Technology

7x/ta1 well done Dumebi Okoli and Alyssa Bacalso for producing some of the best work in Year 7.

Year 8 Art Deco Night Light Year 8’s have been studying design and its beginnings and have been thinking about Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Their task was to design a colour changing night light in one of the styles. The task was split into 3 sections including the base, the plastic and the electronics. To create the base the students made a simple box using mitre joints and then added decoration using MDF. They then painted it. Once this was complete the students spent time learning how to use CAD to add a design in the style of the art movements, this was then cut and etched using the laser cutter. The final stage was to create the electronics.

Page 15: to view newsletter

The students researched common electrical components and then soldered them on to a PCB. When creating this product it was important that the students worked independently, giving them the freedom to explore the workshop and overcome obstacles while making. As with all years, the results have been outstanding. Here is some of the amazing work the students have produced, each having different designs.

Year 8 Earphone Tidy Project The year 8 students have also created a headphone holder this tested there skills using CAD and taught them about packing and its importance, also the need to solve problems. 2016 seems to be the year of the Emoji with many students using this as the base of their designs. Well done to Lorcan Dixon and Brandon Wilson for creating a good quality product moving away from the typical Emoji's.

Year 9 Amplified Speakerbox

The year 9 students have been designing and creating electronic amplified speaker boxes, they researched a client, generated designs and made a model before they used 2D design to produce the case. The students also soldered the components to a PCB, with a little paint the boxes where complete. All students worked independently to finish their boxes solving problems as they arose. Well done to Shannon Close and Olivia Sharman for producing some outstanding work.

After many hours trying to get the 3d printer to work properly we have managed to print some products, Luke martin has attended a number of sections to create this detailed plan, he used plans from the internet to create this miniature model, and the printer managed to print without any problem. Watch this space for some more items in the future.

Thank you for all years for their hard work in technology and for helping to develop the projects, hope you enjoyed it.

Not only have some of our students excelled at their practical work, but also in their homework. Some students once again, have gone that extra mile and demonstrated a great deal of effort and Imagination. Well done everyone!

This year in Food Technology we have developed our own Colchester Academy recipe booklets for Key Stage 3. These have proved to be a great success with students asking for the other years’ booklets so that they can make the dishes at home, great news! Next year we will continue to use these to help guide students through the practical work which will then be evidenced through practical learning logs.

We now also have our own, self-sufficient, herb garden. So if you do have any herbs in your own gardens that are ‘taking over’ we will happily take cuttings or adopt the herbs for you.

In Food Technology we also hosted a number of Year 6 lessons during their induction week. The focus of these lessons was to generate discussion about food provenance; where does our food come from and what impact can this have on our planet. Well done everyone for such a

successful and rewarding term. Happy holidays and ‘keep cooking’!

A thought provoking lesson and great fun as we all made our fresh fruit kebabs and calculated the total distance our fruit had travelled! FACT: did you know that the kiwi fruit is native of New Zealand and travels 18,300 miles!!

My Story

In my role as Student Support Manager at Colchester Academy I have helped many children in many different situations. Just before Christmas a student I had been assisting came up to me and gave me the brilliant news that she had had her last appointment at hospital in the treatment of lieukaemia. After five years of chemotherapy she was free of cancer. She had been through so much and wanted to give back to the charity that had helped her and her family, and she wanted me to help too. I was inspired, so over the Christmas holidays I began looking for ideas to fundraise. Whilst listening to Smooth Radio I heard about Global’s Make Some Noise and all the fantastic charities they help. They talked about walking the Great Wall of China to raise money for charity and, considering my Scouting and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme experience, I knew this was a great idea! Many of our nation’s students will be able to access these charities and it is very important to me as I have seen how some disadvantaged children suffer.

I would like to say a big Thank you to all those students and parents who have sponsored

me so far this isn’t going to be easy! Thank you very much.
