Marian Antiphon ~ Alma Redemptoris MaterFor the past twenty-three weeks we have been singing the Marian Antiphon, “Salve Regina” at the end of Communion. Beginning next week, the first week of Advent, we will switch our Marian Antiphon to the “Alma Redemptoris Mater.” We will continue to use this antiphon for the next eleven weeks, or until February 2 when the Church will have us switch again to the “Ave Regina Caelorum.”

The four seasonal Marian Antiphons (also called Anthems) originally come from “Compline” from the “Divine Office” (also known as the “Liturgy of the Hours.”). Compline (also known as Night Prayer) is the last hour of the day and recited or sung right before retiring for the evening. At the end of Compline, one of these four seasonal antiphons are recited or sung: “Alma Redemptoris Mater,” “Ave Regina Caelorum,” “Regina Caeli,” or “Salve Regina” (the “Ave Maria” may be substituted for the “Salve Regina”).

While always recited or sung at Compline, these four Marian Anthems may also be sung at the conclusion of Mass, usually at the end of Communion. While the traditional chant melodies are what are sung, these texts have also been set to music for choirs by many of the great composers over the centuries.

ALMA REDEMPTORIS MATER (Loving Mother of the Redeemer) (# 471 in the hymnals) This anthem begins our liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent and is sung until the Feast of the Purification (or Candlemas) on February 2 (which was the original end date for the Christmas Season). This prayer tells of the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary and of her divine motherhood. The text and the chant melody are credited to Herimann Contractus, a monk of Reichenau (1013-1054).

Loving mother of the Redeemer, Gate of heaven, star of the sea, Assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

Yet remained a virgin after as before. You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting, Have pity on us poor sinners.

Thank you!Our parishes offer deep gratitude and continued prayers for the followingindividuals who remembered their parish over the last two years in their estateplanning. Grace, mercy and peace from the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

On behalf of our Sisters I want to thank The Catholic Parishes of Sandusky for sending the names of your departed loved ones. We have lovingly placed them at Our Lady’s feet. A candle has burn during this month of November. Our loved ones are receiving the benefit of all the Masses being offered in the Monastery Chapel, the Divine Office throughout the day, as well as the frequent prayers of the Sisters.

We thank you also for the generous gift of $1,791.00 anf the other donations we received from your parishes. We continue our prayers for you all in Sandusky, for your intentions and those of your parish family. May God bless you all the hundredfold for your kindness and generosity.

May you have a grace-filled Advent to prepare for the Birth of our Savior!

Kindly remember in prayer all our Priests serving in the Diocese of Toledo, as they gather on Monday, November 29 for the annual Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. Through our prayers, and the intercession of Saint Joseph, may the Lord grant them grace, peace, renewed fidelity, and the consolation of his presence.

We are in need of some energetic volunteers for an hour or so on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 9 AM to help with the annual church cleaning. It was skipped last year due to COVID and we could use some help to rid cobwebs, dust, and more! Help us make it look good for Christmas! Mark Fitzthum will have all materials available and direct us where needed. Thanks in advance.

On Wednesday, December 8 the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, an important point of Catholic teaching that Mary was conceived without Original Sin. It is also a Holy Day of Obligation. We call them obligations because the Precepts of the Catholic Church tell us that celebrating those feast days is a part of the minimum level of commitment to the Catholic faith. The best way to celebrate these important feast days is by celebrating the Holy Mass with all the angels and saints!Tuesday, December 7 (Vigil)4 PM - Holy Angels6 PM - St. Mary’sConfessions are canceled.Wednesday, December 812 PM - Sts. DEADLINE DECEMBER 15

On December 1, the Supreme Court will hear the landmark pro-life case, Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health. In the Dobbs case, the Supreme Court has to decide the constitutionality of a 2018 state law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks of gestation in Mississippi. When the Supreme Court agreed to take on Dobbs, everyone quickly re-alized what it would mean. Their ruling on Dobbs could amount to a ruling on the constitutionality of Roe v. Wade itself - the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in all 50 states - together with other pro-abortion legal precedents such as the case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which further cemented the “constitutionality” of Roe.

If you are able, please sign-up for a Holy Hour at Holy Angels this week (especially Wednesday, Dec. 1) to pray for the intentions of the pro-life movement - and of our precious unborn brothers and sisters - before the Lord! Help the pro-life movement by spending time with Jesus in the Eucharist.
