Greater Noida: The GreaterNoida Industrial Develop-ment Authority (GNIDA) hasdecided to redesign roads anddrainage networks aroundSurajpur collectorate thatgets flooded almost every ye-ar. The work will start afterthis monsoon, officials said.

The development autho-rity has been facing a lot ofcriticism for not being ableto prevent flooding in thearea and other busy parts ofthe city. Although GNIDAhad claimed it had taken pre-ventive measures this timeas well, steady rains that las-ted for about 20 minutes re-sulted in waterlogging inmany locations.

Currently, eight pumpsare being operated to drain

out water. “Surajpur collec-torate building is at a lowerlevel compared to the roadadjacent to it. Also, the dra-

ins near the building do notdischarge water properly asthey remain choked with siltand garbage. It is extremely

difficult to get inside the buil-ding when it rains,” said Ra-mesh Gautam, a resident ofMamura who visited the col-lectorate on Wednesday toapply for a welfare scheme.

On Wednesday, GNIDAblacklisted a company andimposed a fine of Rs 5 lakhon a contractor for not beingable to avoid waterlogging inKulesara area.

For the past couple of da-ys, traffic movement has be-en disrupted on the Dadri-Surarjpur-Chhalera routebecause of flooding.

“On Tuesday, Wednesdayand Thursday, our officialssurveyed all places that re-ported waterlogging. Somecontractors have been iden-tified and action will be ta-ken against them,” said theadditional chief executive

officer of GNIDA, DeepChandra. In Noida, the areanear Mahamaya flyover isprone to waterlogging.

Officials said Noida Aut-hority had spent Rs 74 lakh toavoid such problems on thestretch between Mahamayaflyover and DND flyway loopnear Dalit Prerna Sthal.

“But the efforts have notyielded desired results. Thearea near Mahamaya flyo-ver gets flooded almost eve-ry year and water stays onthe Noida-Greater Noida Ex-pressway days after it stopsraining,” said Sachin Ra-wat, a resident of JaypeeAman in Sector 151.

The stretch on MasterPlan Road 1 that extendsfrom DND flyway to Sector16 underpass also gets floo-ded when it rains.

Noida: With several partsof the city getting waterlog-ged, the district environ-ment committee (DEC) has initiated an enquiryand sought a report on the status of rainwater har-vesting systems in residen-tial societies and commer-cial complexes.

All such constructionsunder Noida and GreaterNoida authorities are sup-posed to have rainwaterharvesting systems, accor-ding to building bylaws. Se-veral public parks also havethem installed.

But the officials saidthat there has been no as-sessment on how manysuch plants are operationalacross the district.

“Rainwater harvestingsystems are essential for re-charging the groundwater.Noida’s groundwater levelis already low and it is depleting every year. Hen-ce, it is important to main-tain the rainwater harves-

ting systems,” said VikrantTongad, an environmentalactivist and member of the DEC. Officials said alllocal authorities would beasked to report on the status of rainwater harves-ting systems.

“The authorities will gi-ve us an update on the sy-stems and how these canhelp recharge groundwater. The report will be discus-sed in the committee’s mee-ting next month,” said Su-

has LY, the district magist-rate and chairperson of the committee.

The committee will alsoprepare a report on the ille-gal RO water plants acrossthe district.

Earlier, the administra-tion had received compla-ints regarding two suchplants last month that wereshut down.

“There are hundreds ofsmall and big RO plants inthe district and they areusing up the groundwater. Most of them may not be ne-eded if the local authority’swater supply system becomes regular. We willhelp the administration tolocate such plants,” Tongad said.

The DEC has also soughta list of waterbodies, wet-lands and solid waste mana-gement plants in the dis-trict and residents’ compla-ints regarding waste mana-gement system.

Officials said an envi-ronment plan has been pre-pared for next year.
