TYPICAL TIM GREY INFORMATION OR WHYYOU SHOULD ATTEND HIS SEMINAR

The Use of the HistogramThe following information is purloined from a

Tim Grey article “Histogram Demystified” in “TheDigital Image” newsletter, Winter, 2003, GeorgeD. Lepp & Assoc.

Useful not only for taking good digital photo-graphs, the histogram can also be used to deter-mine the quality of scans, and as a check on thevarious alterations you make in Photoshop.

What is a histogram? For an 8 bit imagethere are 256 bars, each of which represents thenumber of pixels of each tonal value in your

image. The bars to the left represent the dark orshadow portions of the image while the bars tothe right, the highlights or lighter parts of theimage. A bar chart that is shifted to the leftwould represent an overall darker image whilewhen shifted to the right, a lighter one. A bellcurve that is centered shows an image that is fair-ly neutral in tonal values and has low contrast. Acurve that has most pixels in both the dark andlight parts of the chart and a dip in the middleindicates a high contrast image.

Now, it doesn’t matter what kind of an image

you are working with as long as the histogram“bottoms out” on both ends. This means that theimage has not lost any highlight or shadowdetail.

However, if the histogram shows clipping oneither end or both ends simultaneously, it meansthat your exposure is not correct or you are tryingto photograph a scene that is beyond the tonal

range of the camera. Clipping can mean signifi-cant loss of information! Another form of clippingis a high spike at either end of the histogramwhich could indicate specular highlights or darkshadow area. If you can see the histogram onyour digital camera, you have a chance to fixthe problem. You cannot count on the LCD dis-play to give you accurate exposure informationbecause you can set the brightness of the dis-play. Also ambient lighting or a tilt of the camerawill make the display difficult to use with any

Treasurer’s Report: Our totals at the end ofMay are $6630.69. A 4-month CD at 1.25%will be revisited at the end of four months.

Vice-President: Richard Martin wants to do abook tour in this area and would like to presentanother seminar in conjunction with it.

The slide and print chairs are accepting elec-tronic entries from delegates who can providethem.

Nature Chair: PLEASE EMPHASIZE TOTHOSE WHO TURN IN ZOOLOGICAL SLIDES,THAT IF THE PHOTO WAS MADE IN THE WILDTO ENTER THAT ON THE BACK OF THE SLIDE.

It seems that there should be many more eligi-ble than are currently indicated.

FotoClave: A snag has occured in that theDelta Council, which was responsible for the nextFotoClavem is unable to handle it. Too few work-ers. The suggestions for solving this problem are:

(1) The next Council in line would take it over, namely N4C

(2) PSA Chapters would take responsibility(3) The work would be shared every two

years by all councils. The N4C board preferredthe latter approach.

Digital Imaging:Peninsula is planning to have four LCD projec-

tor competitions next year. We should share ourexperiences in this field. Baha Fahmy suggestedthat N4C should be more proactive in this area, possibly offering competitions beginning nextyear. Maybe only three or four clubs would be

interested initially, but N4C could offer theoption of digital competitions. The committee willcontinue to meet and review what the clubs aredoing in this area. Also it would be useful forN4C to obtain the dates for digital competitionsin the clubs and to act as a conduit for sharingexperiences.

New Business: The Board felt that our websiteneeded rejuvenating. Delegates were to ask atthe club level for suggestions and possible webhelpers. The following website was cited as agood example: luminous-landscape.com.

accuracy. The viewfinder of a non SLR digitalcamera suffers from the same problems.

Using an analog SLR you will have to usejudgement based on experience. You can reviewthe histogram later during the scanning process orworking in Photoshop either with the Levels paletteor the Histogram palette found under Window.

Gaps in the Histogram. Gaps arise usuallyfrom manipulation efforts in Photoshop or like pro-grams. Typical would be the process of increas-ing the contrast. This stretches the histogramwhich then fills in the shape by including gaps. Agap is actually a missing set of pixels of a partic-ular tonal value. Gaps are not too critical to theoutcome of your final image providing they arenot too large. Large gaps of missing tonal valuestogether can produce a posterized look.

Gaps from increased contrast

Gaps from a posterization of 24

Film Scanning. Many film scanners show his-tograms that you can use to help you set the scan-ning exposure. Tim says that “the very best scanwill be one that is as bright as possible without los-ing highlight detail.” Be sure to crop your imagebefore scanning to avoid any of the mount or filmedge which will affect the histogram. Use the low-resulution preview to review the histogram andadjust the exposure before the scan.

The Histogram Palette By monitoring the his-togram during your image corrections, you cansee in real time if you are helping or hurting theimage. Photoshop CS now includes an elaborateHistogram palette. All Channels View will showeach of the RGB channels separately in color plusthe composite histogram. In that way you candetermine if you have lost detail on a particularchannel in the image. Pulling the channel menudown to Colors will show a melding of the com-posite into the three colors and their overlappingcolors.

If you are making adjustments to the imageusing the original (not recommended), the his-togram will show you a before and after displayduring the adjustment.

In general, the histogram will help you makeinformed decisons as to exposure of cameras andscanners as well as for adjustments in Photoshop.

A FEW QUICK TIPS FROM TIMSaturation: Treat a +20 Saturation shift as a

warning signal. Beyond that, you may producecolors that look fake or you could lose detail.

Some color casts can be fixed by TargetedDesaturation. If you can’t make a good coloradjustment using the color balance tools, you maybe able to correct it by desaturating one of thecolor channels. In Hue/Saturation, pick the colorin the Edit pull-down menu and move the Satur-ation to 100% so that you can see where thatcolor is located throughout the image. Graduallyreduce the saturation for that color only, continual-ly checking to see how the image reacts.

Selective Saturation. Using the same principle asabove, selectively saturate a particular color in yourimage. As an example, with two sets of coloredflowers you might like one to be emphasized overthe other. Always be careful, however, not to oversat-urate to the point of losing detail or looking false.
