THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
THE CHURCH GATHERS . . .
Welcome to Westminster Church! We are a family of Christians gathered from many
traditions and neighborhoods, worshiping here with the goal of connecting faith and life. If
you are a visitor, we pray you will feel welcome and blessed by our worship. We invite you to
consider making Westminster your church home. Please let us have your contact information
so we may be in touch.
When the prelude begins let us quietly prepare for the worship of almighty God.

*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
Gracious God, we come before you, distracted and unfocused, too full of
ourselves and too empty of your spirit. Help us this morning to clear our
minds of worries and plans. Help us to let go of unkindness and any grudges
we hold. Move us to look beyond our lives and to center ourselves in your
goodness and grace. Like a loving parent, O Lord, guide us to make choices
that honor you. Forgive our sins, strengthen our resolve to do good, encourage
our hearts, that we might be the people you have called us to be. In Christ’s
name, we pray. Amen.

Creed of the United Church of Canada (Reformed)
We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has
created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to
reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We
trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice
and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our
hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not
alone. Thanks be to God.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE ... The Lord’s Prayer
During the Prayers of the People there will be a time of silence. You are invited to use
this time for personal reflection, confession, thanksgiving, and prayer. You are also
invited to reflect on the following prayer.
Oh, God:
I asked for hope, you gave me a challenge;
I asked for healing, you gave me patience;
I asked for riches, you gave me friendships;
I asked for friendships, you gave me opportunities to be a friend;
I asked to be useful, you required of me my riches;
I asked for love, you taught me to give;
I asked for peace, I found myself sorting my way through trouble;
I asked for rest, you gave me energy.
I asked only for solace, and you brought resurrection.
Lord, your giving answers seem always to be ahead of my wisdom in asking. The
things I ask are too small, or too selfish, or too far beside the point of my own life’s
calling - You seem to know. You seem to grant me what I need
rather than what I want. Grant me this always. Amen.
THE OFFERING
Please sign and pass the Friendship Register found on the pew nearest the
center aisle. Though many of us contribute electronically or by a check in the mail,
your holding and passing the offering plate is an act of blessing and dedication to our
life together in Jesus Christ.
OFFERTORY ANTHEM
(9:00) Children’s Prayer German folk tune
arr. Robert Leaf
Oh Father, in heaven, be with us we pray. Thy word shall our hearts and our
voices obey. Through darkness and danger abide on our way. Oh Father, in
heaven, be with us we pray.
So softly, so gently, the dawn of the day, With beauty surrounds us while
lighting our way. Oh Father, direct us in work and in play. In all our
endeavor be faithful, we pray.
We welcome thy Spirit within us to dwell, Thy glory and honor our voices
will tell. We thank thee, we praise thee, thy word we obey. Oh Father, in
heaven, be with us we pray.

(11:00) Jubilate Deo in F John Ireland
O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness, and come
before His presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord He is God: it is He
that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep
of His pasture. O go your way into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His
courts with praise, be thankful unto Him, and speak good of His Name. For
the Lord is gracious, His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth from
generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the
Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.

WE RETURN to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orgelbüchlein for this morning’s prelude.
This well-known chorale, which we sing regularly in worship, is actually set twice in
this collection. As with a number of the Orgelbüchlein chorale preludes, this
morning’s treats the chorale melody in canon, though this time at the fifth, with just
two beats separating the entrance of the second voice, and all played in the right
hand, leaving the left hand and pedal the accompaniment. We will hear the canon
played on the Principal 8’, with the accompaniment on the Gedackt 8’ (a flute) in the
left hand and the Subbaß 16’ (a flute speaking an octave lower) and the Gedackt 8’
(different one than just mentioned) in the pedal.

Thanks to your generosity in January, the youth collected money to completely
sponsor April's LaundryLove project. LaundryLove, an organization which is fairly
new to Knoxville, is active in cities across the USA. They provide free laundry service
(one Thursday each month) to low-income and homeless families in Knoxville. They
also serve a light meal and provide activities for the kids who are there. Our day to
provide laundry assistance and a meal will be Thursday, April 19 from 5:15-8:30 p.m.
We need 15-20 volunteers to assist with laundry (handing out quarters, helping
carry, fold, etc.). We need 4-6 volunteers to serve and plan the meal. We also need
people who could play with and entertain the children who are there. This will be a
fantastic opportunity to make a connection with and be a help to our neighbors!
The event will be held at the Blue Water Laundry 3721 N. Broadway. Look for sign-
up sheets on bulletin boards by the offices and kitchen.
