Teacher TipThis Bible Background feature is a supplemental aid provided for you, the Storyteller, to give context for each session’s story before you teach on it. You may share this information with your Voyagers if desired, but it is not a recommended portion of the intended lesson.

Bible BackgroundLuke 10:25-37

The term Good Samaritan has come to refer to anyone who assists another in need. We might use it to describe one who helps a stranded motorist or offers first aid to an injured person. Many regions even have “Good Samaritan laws” to protect those who go out of their way to offer emergency assistance. These modern-day Good Samaritans demonstrate the same sacrifice and compassion we see in Jesus’ parable, but this story is about more than showing kindness to strangers; it is about confronting our prejudices.

The Scripture opens as Jesus responds to a series of questions from a legal expert, designed to trick and challenge Jesus. Jesus responded to the man’s queries with this parable. To the audience who first heard it, Jesus’ answer would have been shocking, even scandalous. To understand why, we must examine the history between the Jews and the Samaritans.

Following Israel’s golden age under Kings Saul, David, and Solomon, the kingdom split. The northern part of the kingdom kept the name of Israel. In 722 BC, Assyria conquered Israel and resettled the land with their own people. What few Israelites remained intermarried with the Assyrians—creating the race that would be known as the Samaritans—and began to worship their pagan gods alongside Jehovah.

The southern portion of the former kingdom called itself Judah, after Israel’s largest tribe. In 600 BC, Babylon conquered Judah and forced its citizens into exile, yet the people of Judah persisted in maintaining their own culture and worship practices. They became known as Jews.

The Jews resented and eventually hated the Samaritans for their corruption of the Israelite culture and faith. Emerging disagreements over how and where to worship God fueled already existing animosity between them. As a result, the two groups didn’t associate with each another and even went out of their way to avoid contact.

Through the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught that kindness goes beyond being “nice,” and beyond merely showing compassion to friends, loved ones, and people who share our beliefs. We also must expand our understanding of the word neighbor to include strangers and even people we’ve come to think of as our enemies.

This is an extension of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:43-48 that there is nothing remarkable about loving people who love us; just about anyone can do that. Jesus expects more from his followers. He wants us to be like the good Samaritan and go beyond to help all who need it, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or cultural background.

Bible Tie-in Repeat the Vector Verse. Each one of you is empowered by God to go beyond all that you could ask or imagine because of God’s power at work within each one of you.

Think of some ways you can use God’s power to go beyond to do special tasks for others. (Let Voyagers respond.) End the time of discussion with a prayer.

Cokesbury Craft Kit Galaxy MobilePurpose Voyagers will decorate a mobile that will help them remember to go beyond in service to God and to others.

Ages Appropriate for all ages. Younger Voyagers may need extra help.

Preparation Cover tables with a tablecloth. Open packages. Set out supplies and one kit per Voyager. Make sure the Voyagers’ names are on the back of the mobiles.

Directions

Step 1: Voyagers decorate their mobile, using a variety of craft supplies. Stickers can be added to the back of the mobile.

Step 2: Voyagers will attach the blue BEYOND sticker to the mobile.

Step 3: Voyagers attach the space shapes to the cording and tie them to the bottom of the mobile.

Teacher TipGlitter glue works best. Gel glue and clear glue are too runny.

Bible Tie-inRemind Voyagers of the Bible story.

Name some ways you can be kind and helpful to others. How can this craft help you remember to be kind?

Step 1: Voyagers paint the canvas board with watercolors. Cover the whole board with random painting; no particular design required.

Step 2: Voyagers squeeze glitter glue in a swirl shape to represent the solar system. Drop a few blobs of glitter glue to represent the planets (not too much, as the glue will spread).

Quick & EasyGalaxy in a BottleI. ObservationIn our Bible story, we learned about two people groups who normally did not mix very well, and how an act of kindness brought about a big change. In this experiment, we will see some other substances that do and do not mix well!

(Show Voyagers the materials.) Have you seen materials like these before? How do we normally use them? Have you ever tried to mix oil and water before? What happened?

II. Question & Hypothesis What do you think will happen when we try and mix these materials together? Let’s test it!

III. Experiment

Step 1: Fill your bottle about halfway with water.

Step 2: Add food coloring (and glitter, if desired); seal well, and shake.

To Mars and Beyond At-Home Packet 6

Step 3: Add about 2/3 cup of oil; seal well, and shake. Let it sit for 30-60 seconds and observe. What happens?

Step 4: Add a generous squirt of dish soap; seal well and shake again. Let it sit for 30-60 seconds and observe. What happens?

Step 5: Invite Voyagers to perform the experiment themselves. Repeat steps as time allows or until each Voyager gets a turn.

Go Beyond: Repeat the same steps using different types of liquid and soap. Does the outcome change? STEM option: Provide materials and invite Voyagers to create emulsions from their own liquid combinations!

IV. Analyze & ApplyHow Does it Work?Oil and water do not mix. Oil molecules are attracted to other oil molecules, so they stick together; the same goes for water molecules. In addition, the oil will always try to float on top of the water since the oil has a lower density than water. Detergent is the game-changer here. It is attracted to both water and oil molecules, so it grabs onto both, causing oil droplets to be suspended in the water. When you shake the jar, the detergent molecules adhere the water and oil together, forming an emulsion, which a substance of molecules who are not normally attracted. That is why detergent is so useful for cleaning greasy dishes!

Bible Tie-In!Just like the detergent bringing the oil and water together in our experiment, the Good Samaritan’s act of kindness brought people together who otherwise did not mix well. When we are kind to others, we can help bring people together, too!

Now let’s take another look at the Bible story.

What happened to the traveler in Jesus' story? (He was robbed and hurt by thieves.)

Who passed the man and did not help him? (a priest and a Levite) Who stopped to help? (the Samaritan)

After he told the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus told his listeners to "Go and do likewise." What do you think Jesus meant?

Jesus invited the legal expert, the people in the crowd, and us to be like the Samaritan and show kindness by helping others, even people we see as different. Showing kindness is one way that God's power works in us.

Speaking of God's power in us, who remembers our Vector Verse? (Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by his power at work within us! Ephesians 3:20)

When it doesn't seem easy to be kind, we can take time to stop and ask God to help us by his power at work in us.
