No. 4 April 6, 2019

To ensure that trail running’s special appeal, the beautiful

culture surrounding Mr. Fuji, and the magnificent natural

environment are all left to future generations

The Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji is conducting various trail running-based activities throughout the year

to build sustainable societies around Mt. Fuji.

Zero waste at the UTMF A3 MOTOSUKO

The UTMF is participating in the Mt. Fuji Zero Waste Challenge Project advocated by the

specified NPO - Fujisan Club - which is working to protect and preserve the beautiful natural

environment of Mt. Fuji. This year, the UTMF is trying to realize “zero waste” at A3 MOTOSUKO

in Minobu town.

① Serving food using reusable tableware and utensils

The disposable tableware used to serve courtesy food

(yuba bowl) has been switched to reusable tableware.

Plastic spoons have been replaced by wooden spoons. After

use in the race, these spoons will be used as firewood at

Motosuko Ikoinomori Camping Ground.

② At A3 MOTOSUKO no drinks in PET bottles will be

supplied.

③ Composting of kitchen waste

Kitchen food waste generated at A3 MOTOSUKO Aid

Station will be put into the compost bin installed there to

The UTMF 2019 T-shirt Recycling Project

The T-shirt Recycling Project has started to recycle T-shirts, which are washed frequently and

tend to wear out quickly, into new running T-shirts without degrading their functionality.

① The UTMF 2019 T-shirts to be distributed

to racers as gifts have been made from

recycled materials produced from collected

PET bottles and polyester clothes.

② Used (or unused) race T-shirts will be

collected at the T-shirt collection booth at the

start (KODOMO-NO-KUNI) and finish

(KAWAGUCHIKO) venues. The collected race T-shirts will be turned into the new UTMF 2020

participation T-shirts.

*We will accept any T-shirts that have been distributed to racers and runners as

gifts in other trail running or marathon races regardless of manufacturer or brand.

*A special UTMF soft cup, which also functions as one of the mandatory pieces

of equipment in the UTMF race, will be given as a gift to racers, supporters, and

spectators who turn in their T-shirts. (This gift will be presented to the first 2,000

people who turn in their T-shirts.)

Environmental monitoring

We are conducting environmental monitoring at a total of 58 locations in 11 areas before and

after each race. We are releasing the results, and exchanging opinions with relevant people and

organizations. We are using findings from these activities to run environmentally friendly races

based on proper course protection and installation of vegetation protection fences.

This program includes monitoring of the natural environment, which compares course

conditions before and after a race, along with monitoring of the effects of using the environment,

which includes seeking the opinions of general users including hikers

and local residents around the course during the race.

*We are implementing monitoring in accordance with Guidelines on Monitoring Conducted in

Association with Trail Running Races Conducted Inside National Parks (March 2017, National

Park Division, Nature Conservation Bureau, Ministry of the Environment).

Trail maintenance

In addition to the UTMF course, we are maintaining nearby hiking trails to improve the overall

trail environment around Mt. Fuji.

NPO Fuji Trail Runners Club is taking the initiative in maintenance activities led by local

organizations, and many trail runners, supporters, and volunteers are actively participating in the

maintenance. Trail maintenance is being conducted through combined efforts of various people,

including local residents and students.
