To Dwell and To Visit A Message from Rabbi Schrier

This coming week, Rena and I will become official residents of Teaneck, New Jersey. No, I do not refer to

Tuesday’s appointment at the

DMV to officially hand over my New York license and exchange it for one from New Jersey. (Yes, that is happening. And yes, it will be traumatic for me.) I refer instead to a Gemara in Masechet Bava Batra 8B that tells us that true residence in a township, village or community occurs after thirty days of habitation. The Gemara tells us that it is only after thirty days that new arrivals attain the status of Yoshvei Ha-Ir – dwellers of the city – complete with a set of communal responsibilities that come with that special distinction and title. From the Gemara’s standpoint, it will be this

coming Monday that the Schrier family officially joins the ranks. In my mind, the status of Yoshev Ha-Ir has significant theological ramifications in addition to the narrow Halakhic expectations described by the Gemara. The term implies a sense of membership and belonging. A sense of fraternity and communal brotherhood. And the sense of having settled in a true home. Being a Yoshev Ha-Ir is simultaneously a privilege and responsibility. A Yoshev Ha-Ir has a community that cares for and looks after them, and that they, in turn, care for and look after. But there is also a danger that comes with being a Yoshev Ha-Ir, a danger that is highlighted by a passage in our daily davening during the month of Elul. In Tehillim Mizmor 27 – the “Le-Dovid” we recite after Shofar blowing – we read the following:

Rav Asher Weiss notes an inherent tension in the verse. On the one hand, we ask to dwell in the House of Hashem for the entirety of our lives – Shivti Be-veit Hashem Kol Yemei Chayay. Yet, on the other hand, we also ask to visit His Sanctuary – le-vaker be-heichalo. The two seem mutually exclusive. the Path of the Upright. Rav Moshe ,ישרים

Chaim Luzzato (the 1707-1746 ,רמח"ל) endures as one of the most influential and prolific Rabbinic thinkers and writers of the past 300 years. With both classical Jewish and Italian educational foundations, he went on to produce landmark works of Jewish thought and philosophy, tools for study, literature of different genres, and Kabbalah.

One of his best-known and influential

works is ישרים published when he ,מסילת lived in Amsterdam in the 1730s. It has been one of the most central works of the mussar canon and was enthusiastically endorsed by the Vilna Gaon shortly after its publication and enshrined by Rav Yisroel Salanter the following century as a cornerstone of mussar. Beginning this past Thursday night and continuing each subsequent Tuesday and

Thursday night after the 9:00 Ma’ariv, Rabbi Schrier will focus on the main thought from each chapter. It will be a brief summary followed by a more detailed exposition on these central ideas. All are invited to attend in the back of the Beis Medrash. No special educational background is expected and no advanced Hebrew proficiency is needed. The timeless messages of the Ramchal will speak to audiences of all backgrounds and education levels. “In

Beis Medrash Committee Manny Freed z”l Parent Child Learning will take place on

Shabbat at 4:45 pm in the Ogden Tent. This Monday, August 30th we welcome back the return of the

Yitzchak Yaakov Kollel Boker with Rabbi Zvi Sobolofsky at 6:20 am, Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays in the CBY Social Hall. Mishna Yomit is learning Masechet Niddah.

Rabbi Schrier continued from page 1 Rav Asher suggests that the tension is deliberate and intends

to convey a valuable message about “dwelling” in the House of Hashem. One of the hazards of “dwelling” is that, over time, what was once new turns old, what was once fresh turns stale, and what was once exhilarating turns routine. Far too often, the passage of time leaves us jaded and cynical, capable of seeing flaws and shortcomings, but incapable of seeing greatness and grandeur. We lose the positivity and optimism of the “visitor,” and we are left bitter and uninspired.

By way of simple analogy, take the tourist visiting a new site for the very first time. They come to a place like Midtown Manhattan and they are awestruck. With eyes (and often jaws) wide open, they eagerly look around them, trying to absorb all the sights and sounds that come with the new experience. They see the lights, the buildings, even the signs and billboards with a sense of wonder and amazement. But when a lifelong New Yorker – soon-to-be former lifelong New Yorker – like myself enters the very same space, we see things through an entirely different lens. We see the traffic, the dirt on the streets and sidewalks, and a hundred other problems invisible to the foreign eye. Where they see marvel and beauty, we see filth and disappointment.

And so, in the month of Elul we ask Hashem to maintain the fresh excitement of the visitor, even as we dwell in His Sanctuary permanently. We ask Hashem to indeed make us a permanent place near and close to Him, but to always provide us the clarity of mind to see things with the joy and excitement of the visitor for whom it is all new.

And, if I may humbly add, it is critical that we all take moments to do so in our Torah communities as well. For the last few weeks, Rena and I have been the fresh visitors. And there is so much beauty and grandeur in what we have seen. The warm welcomes, the passion of our shul’s members, the excitement for shiurim, the investment in chessed initiatives, the enthusiasm for tefillah, the list goes on and on. But, with time, many of these things will undoubtedly become routine and expected; we all reach a point when we take for granted what was once exciting and new.

My hope is that, in the spirit of the month of Elul, we can all find moments to take a step back and rediscover that excitement of the visitor. To rediscover the many amazing features of our communal home and dwelling. To recognize, appreciate and cherish the special character and accomplishments of our shul, that so many outsiders indeed recognize, appreciate and cherish. To reap the benefits of dwelling while never relinquishing the enthusiasm of the visitor.

Weekly Shabbat Announcements August 27-September 3, 2021

The summer draws to a close and, on cue, CBY’s popular Teen Minyan will resume this Shabbat. Serving the needs of our young men and woman from the 8th grade through high school, the minyan begins at 9 am in our Social Hall. Rabbi Jonathan Schachter and Rav Ben Krinsky, a rebbe at TABC, provide inspiration, instruction, and supervision for the next generation of Jewish leaders and בעלי בתים.

The minyan, in every aspect, caters to the needs of our teens. The content of the תורה the leibidig ,דברי (lively and musical) character of the tefillah, and the length of the service (finish by 11 am) appeal to the

youngsters. The minyan provides a comfortable and inviting environment in which the teens can daven with old

friends and make new ones. It provides an opportunity for them to gain experience and confidence and develop their skills to daven for the

amud and read from the Torah. The youngsters also serve as gabbaim, learning to assign responsibilities and

allocate kibbudim. Where appropriate,

Rabbis Schachter and Krinsky devise incentives to encourage the youngsters’ participation. For example, pre-Covid, any teen who volunteered to leyn at least fifteen times, was invited to attend a Yankee game. (See photo.) Parents often attend the Teen Minyan when their child leyns or davens and they

shep Yiddische nachas (not accurately translatable into English).

Ok. We’ve gotten your attention; now keep reading. On Thursday, Bnai Yeshurun’s Daf Yomi Chavura will begin its study of the tractate of Beitzah, which literally means “Egg.” Historically, the tractate was once more commonly called Masechet Yom Tov, because it deals almost exclusively with the laws and customs of Yom Tov. Perhaps, Rabbi Schrier will touch on the subject of this strange name when he teaches the first folio at 5:15 am, this Thursday, in our Beis Medrash.

Bnai Yeshurun’s Daf Yomi Chavura has studied over 14,000 blatt together, since its founding on Thanksgiving Day in 5742 (1982). To the uninitiated, it’s hard to explain the attraction of Daf Yomi. What motivates the members of

our morning Daf group to get out of bed between 4:30 and 5 am every day? For decades!

Thursday morning is a great opportunity to taste the Daf Yomi experience and Masechet Beitzah (only

39 blatt long) is less daunting than most tractates. As we head into our Yom Tov season, you can get a daily dose of interesting and applicable halachot and gain insight into the historical origin of the ways we celebrate Yom Tov. One of the unusual features of Bnai Yeshurun’s

Daf study is that there is not a single maggid shiur who teaches every day. Rather, there is a roster of teachers who rotate on a regular basis. The participants, including the teachers, have different educational backgrounds

and different personalities.

This variety adds interest and contributes to the group’s cohesion and sense of community.

Those who attend Rabbi

Schrier’s launch on Thursday and persist for a few

additional weeks can

look forward to Sunday, October 10th (the 4th day of Cheshvan, a month devoid of Jewish holidays), when they’ll have cause to celebrate their completion of the study of Beitzah. Their kids will be proud of them!

Don’t Forget to Smile– A Message from Rabbi Jonathan Schachter

As the moon of Elul begins to wane, and as we prepare for the recitation of selichos on

motza’ei Shabbat, we

should already feel traces of the Yamim Nora’im in the air, as well as inside of us. This awareness is certainly stress inducing, as our high stakes court date looms large, and The Judge has plenty of incriminating evidence. When we combine this with the impact of the Tochacha from this week’s Torah laining, which vividly details the many punishments HaShem has in store for those who disobey Him, it becomes very difficult for a thoughtful Jew to enjoy a peaceful Shabbat, a “menuchas shalom v’shalvah v’hashkeit va’vetach!” How can we combine the intensity of the Yamim Nora’im with the tranquility of Shabbat? The question goes much deeper though. On Rosh Hashana itself, there is a mitzvah of simcha (according to most rishonim)! We are obligated to synthesize the pachad of the Yom Ha’din with the simcha that is an integral part of each Yom Tov! How can we feel such conflicting feelings? In Sefer Nechemya (Chapter 8), we find Ezra HaSofer discussing this very contradiction with his audience, the Jews

who lived during the beginning of Bayis Sheini, who had gathered outside the Beis Hamikdash on Rosh Hashana to learn about the essence of the day. Ezra began his teaching by laining from the Torah (8:6-9). The Ralbag (France, 1300’s) suggests that the portion he chose was the Tochacha from our parasha, while the Malbim (Ukraine 1800’s) maintains that he lained about Rosh Hashana itself. Either way, the audience broke out in tears when he finished (8:9) because they were so nervous about the awe of the day. But then Ezra commands them to go home and enjoy a festive meal on this day “for this day is holy unto HaShem; you may not be sad, for the joy of HaShem is your greatest strength” (Nechemya 8:10). Clearly, happiness is an essential part of our observance of the Rosh Hashana, the Yom Ha’din! How are we to understand this? Rosh Hashana has two aspects to the day. On the one hand, it is the Yom Ha’din, which induces trembling and fear. On the other hand, it is the day of Malchus, on which we coronate HaShem as the Creator and the Ruler of the entire universe. This second aspect must be accompanied by great simcha, as we joyously celebrate the perfection and benevolence of our King. Imagine how we would feel if we received a personal invitation to attend the president’s inauguration at the White House

(assuming we truly supported and looked up to the president) and were even asked to offer words of blessing! As Jews, we each received an invitation (in the Torah) to celebrate HaShem’s annual day of coronation, and even offer words of blessing! We should feel gracious and overjoyed that we can take part in such an event, and anything less would be a deficient coronation. Our parasha teaches us that one of the primary causes of the curses of the Tochacha is a lack of joy when we serve Hashem. “Tachas asher lo avadeta es Hashem Elokecha b’simcha u’v’tuv leivav mei’rov kol” (Devarim 28:47). The Yalkut Shimoni on this passuk cites this as the source that there must be singing as part our avodas HaShem, so we can better demonstrate our joy in our service. The Vilna Gaon (1700’s) would make sure that the ba’al mussaf on Rosh Hashana would sing the closing kaddish so that the tefilos would end with a feeling of joy (Ma’aseh Rav 207). This Shabbat, and throughout the period of teshuva, we must balance our personal fears of the Yom Ha’din with the joy that accompanies the privilege of serving and coronating HaShem. With this in mind, we can have a “menuchas shalom v’shalvah v’hashkeit va’vetach” on Shabbat, and a Rosh Hashana on which the “joy of Hashem is our greatest strength.”

Weekly Shabbat Announcements August 27-September 3, 2021

Ki Tavo in “Hashtag” Form

• The Jews are told to perform the mitzvah of Bikkurim. We bring our first blooms of the shivas haminim, which were #GrownInIsrael, and dance them all the way to Yerushalayim in a beautiful procession. #Pomp #Glam #Fab #MusicGalore #NaNaNaNaNaNaThankYouHaShem

• Give your Maaserot! Some go to the poor, some go to the Kohanim, some go to the Leviim, some must be eaten by the owner in Yerushalayim. #CoughEmUp #LiveToGive #GiveToLive #TzedakaTatzilMiMaves

• Moshe tells us to keep the mitzvot. We have chosen HaShem to be our God, and He has chosen us to be His treasured people. #Besties #WeBeLikeTHIS #FeelTheLove #UnburiedTreasure

• The Torah is written on large stones, sealed with plaster, and then placed on Har Eival. #CheckTheseOut #StonehengeTorahRocketship

• The blessings and the “not so cool” statements are proclaimed #NotCoolRobertFrost. The older Leviim and the Aron stood in the valley between Har Grizim and Har Eival. The rest of the shevatim are divided up onto the two mountain tops #YodelAdleEedleIdleOo. They listen to the berachos and kelalos and respond “amen.” #CanIHearAnAmen #Amen #Preach

• The rest of the parsha records the blessings which will occur if we stay close to HaShem, and the wakeup calls which will ensue if we occasionally “fall asleep” instead of staying close to HaShem. #WakeUpCall #YallBeBlessed #HaShemBePullingThoseStrings

A Mini-Vort from the Szafranski Table to Yours!

The Torah tells us that unfortunate callaminites will fall upon the Jewish people if we don’t serve HaShem לבב“ ובטוב ה מח ש with joy and good/בheart” (28:47). Serving HaShem with happiness is essential to who we are!

In fact, the Arizal used to say that he only achieved his tremendous level of Ruach HaKodesh because of his joyous avodas HaShem (Toldos Yaakov Yosef, Naso). Or, in the words of the Orchos Tzadikim in Sha’ar HaSimcha (70): “The prophets didn’t attain prophecy whenever they wanted, rather, they would prepare their minds and sit with joyousness and be glad of heart, and then prophesize. For prophecy [...] is only where joy is (Shabbos, 30b).”

Harry Blum needs a kidney transplant as soon as possible. Project Renewal is holding a very important Zoom webinar on August 17th at 7:00 pm that will serve as an educational tool on kidney donation generally including the process, but we also need to spread the word that Harry needs a kidney. Access the webinar here- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83285754949?pwd=NDd4VGNXbDdjdzd6b3Q3T2RxMmdhUT09. Please spread the word about the webinar within your own networks. To be clear, this event will be informational and—hopefully—inspirational (some of us have attended prior webinars with Renewal and they are beyond inspirational). We will not be soliciting any money or asking for any donations or that any of you become kidney donors. The purpose of this is simply to join and learn about kidney donation. Thank you for helping us spread the word.
