a« During the reporting poriodi tho Battalion S2 obtained in- telligence, fiom briefings conducted by 3rd KäRHV (F./D) at Dong Ha Combat Base and from AEVN units, WiüCV and other U.y» .'mny units supported. The infoniiation obtained was dissaminatod to the batterios located r.t Dong Ha through daily battalion briefings. Battery C at Csjnp J.J, Carroll and Battjry D at ?hu Bai received intelligonoe data from the regimental head- quarters that they supported,
b. Hie Battalion continued to have the responsibility for tho periaeter defense in Sector II, Dong Ha Combat Base, Sector oloucnts conducted a rooonnaissanoe patrol south of the base on a daily basis. On one occasion a booby trapped 105MH round was found and disr:mcd. On 29 January, a patrol diroctod artillery on a suspected enemy position. yhio oolnoidod with ruporto from KarLnc roconnaissnnoG insox'fcs that in- uLicatod an incruaao of enemy activity to the south of Dong Ha Combat Base,
c. IXiring tho reporting period, tho weather was favorable to friendly forces. It rained heavily the first 20 dajrs of ilovocibor however, tho rest of the period was unseasonably dry. Repairs on rosupply routes wor« made pud roads to Con Thion (M) end Ton ;ja (^Ij) were coaplcted. The weather had little effect on air resupply end many tons of supplies wore air lifted to outlying positions. Even though there was little rain, the terrain would not support croso-country operations by tracked or wheeled voiiicles.
d. On 1 December 1967, construction of a barrier system to stop infiltration Of enemy forces from Korth Vietnam was begun, Sxlsting outposts and iire bases, such as GLo Linh, Con Thion, Cam Lo, Rockpile, r.nd Ca Lu wore improved. New positions, completed and occupied by the end of the re- porting period weroi il, botvreen the coast owd Gio Linh (YD 201717); ,13, botira^n GLo Linh and Con Thion (YD 166724)5 Cl, an artillery fire base at YD 215673« Battery A deployed two 1142's to ^5 to support a Marine battalion and Battery 3 deployed two 1142» s to Cl to support an .icmy field artillery battrlion. No Battalion equipment was sent to J.,
e. During an intelligence briefing in early November, it was pre- dicted tha.t the enemy's most probable course of action would bo rii'attack on Kho Sanh at the ond of tho monsoon season, Tho prediction appears valid as only small groups ox enemy wore sighted during November end Dicomber. Howovor, during tho latter part of January large enemy forces were observed along tho mz with exceptionally large concentrations around Idle Sanh. The onony forcoa continued to be predominantly NVA with a few TO roinforcoments/ roplacononts. To counter this throat. Marine elements at Kho Sanh wore in- creased from a battalion to a roinforcod regiment, A large reconnaissance screen was established and artillery was relocated so greater support could

(2) The Battalion has lost a great many trained personnel due to rotation and combat basualtiss. Trained replacements are not being received; therefore, the Battalion must «?ontinue to stress training. The majority of the daily training program (92 days) was concentrated on OJT at the section and squad level. The wide dispersion of elements of the batteries mates centralized instruction impracticable,

During the reporting period, numerous reward leaflets were passed out by battalion elements on road nets in the long Ha area. Tvro gconades were turned in by children to a crew providing road security. On another occasion a French grenade and a magazine with nmwunition. were turned in to the Battalion Liaison Officer. Rewards were given to the indigenous personnel who turned in these articles.
4. (c) Logistics:
(1) The BX facility mentioned in last quarter1 s OliLL has been sst up at the supporting task force. They have not achieved 1 complete fill iovol yet to pomit direct exchange of nil the items included on their BX list, Iiowevor, the availability of the parts they do have on head has helped to reduce the dor.dlinc rate within the Battalion, Timely maintenance of signal equipment continues to present problems as the maintenance support rctivities are not able to obtain required repair parts. To further reduce deadline time, this Battalion has recommended to the 560th BoSi. in Ba Hang that a partial AÜL of approxinat-'ly 800 line itmes, based upon heavy donmd from the four artillery units at Bong Ha, be maintained at the task force facility hero at Bong Ha« The administrative work load would he handled by the addition of two ordnance repair parts specialists to the task force organization,
(2) Adequate controls of the 4CSiI ammunition by lot number can- not bo implemented due to the many diiferent lot numbers issued by the AS?* The supporting activity's Ammunition Control Officer has researched this pro- blem area end offers no immediate solution,

at Itemt Perimeter defense test of the M42.
Discussion: Firing testa were conducted to ascertain the moat effective means of employing the 1142 against a ground assault from a pariraeter defensive position. Per the test, 25 cardboard targets wars placed at a range of 220 meters. The targets were positioned so that they covered sä* nrca 50 meters in vadth and 15 meters in depth. Hie tests V/Cxo conductor by: (a) firing at prepiled rocks and metal scraps, (b) firing at. five ...gallon ccjir of foug^so, (c) firing at the ground in front of the targota, end (d) firing at tho center of the target area. The dual guns tore bore sighted on the target boforo each test end 12 rounds wore fired during each of the 4 tests.
Observation: Results of those tests indicate that firing at the ground in front of «i assaulting force produces the greatest number of caaueltios and is the most effective way of stopping that force,
b. Item: Smployment of the M42 and 1155,
Discussion: When automatic weapons are committed to com- bat opcrp.tions, a minimum of two should be omployod. If only one automatic weapon is used, it is the obvious target for the enemy« s antitank weapons. If two or moro automatic weapons are employed, the enemy must divide his nntitrnk weapons accordingly which increases the probability of one of tho rutonatic weapons getting into action. This is of prime importenco as tho

Discussioni If there is a space left bctwocn the 1142 end a sondbageed position, the rjuzzle blast of the guns will gradually destroy the jsijndb^ wall, xbwevor, if the ii42 is driven into the position so that it Just touches the wall the nuzzle blast vail be extended beyond the sand- bag wall end the wall will not be destroyed.
Observation; 1142's should bo driven into a snngbaggod posi- tion, so that the vehicle is touching the wall facing the priaary field of fire.
d. Xtoms Coaputation of firing data.
Discussiont The rapid and accurate conputation of firing data is essential to the effectiveness of the ii42 when used as an indirect fire ißapon. If there is a differenco in altitude becv.OGn the ii42 and target, the use of the nil foraula to cotipute angle of site is a tine con- saai:ig process.
Observation; ^ chart cm bo constructed indieab.in^ the angle of site for different ranges and vortical intervals. This will acf-«lörr».tu the conputation of firing data,

Eiscussiom The M55 crew at LZ Leslie, near Chu Lai, fro- quently aovod their M55 throughout the porineter in order to confuse the eneuy to its exact location. On 5 January 1968, tho enony launched a aortar and ground attack on the LZ. The first si:: nortar rounds hit a position that tho H55 crow had just vacated, Tnorcforc, on this occasion, the tactic of keeping the Ii55 no bile prevented the enony fron pin pointing its location and probably kept tho LZ fron being penetrated or cantured, (See Incl 1, J Jan 68).
Observations The ii55 should ronain aobile and frequently change perinctor positions so that the enony can not pin point its posi- tion.

c. Training!
.{
(1) The Battery established a section level training program duo to the wide dispersion of the battery elements.
(2) All replacements receive a two-day orientation and famllim- ization training program with tho searchlight and their individual weapons. The majority of the training is OJT at the section lovel.
d. Chemicalt
The Battery conducted an Jnapeotdon of all protective masks for fit, cleanliness, and etjrvlceablllty during the month of January.
o, Psywari None
4.(C) Logistics!
Logistical support from the Da Nang Sub Area Command lias been generally satisfactory* Some problem areas that exist are excessive repair time for signal equipment and the lack of an ASL of searchlight major comiKMiontA. Sign. >. equipment that cannot be repaired within a thirty day time frame should be tumed-in and new equipment requested. Maintenance facilities should maintain signal floats to replace items in for repair. The direct support unit should maintain an ASL of major searchlight components because the present system of evacuating major components to CONUS for DX results in excessive downtiiue of our searchlights and is the principle roason for non-operational statusa

Bisoussiont Replaoemonts are arriving at this unit with train- inji in just about every aspect of artillery oxcopt searchlights» As a result
• this battery must spend many man-hours in training incoming personnel, v;
Observation» A school for awarding personnel 1103 I'/E should bo established in COMJS.
b, Itomt Shortage of porsonnol.

Discussion; A searchlight section is manned by one SGrT Ei) and three PK! BJ'st As this unit is authorized no £4'Q vatloin a search- light section there is no provision for promoting within the battery. Further, when it is necessary to split (a section) it leaves a PFC 23 as the ranking man on one of the lights.
Observation; A searchlight section should be aythorized one SGT B5i two SP4 S41 s, and two PFC EJ1 s.
2. (c) Operations:
a. Items Local security»
Discussiom On two occasions the- enemy has overrun light positions immediately after an illundnation mission, was completed.
Observation» Just prior to completion of an illunination mission a sweep of the perimeter wire using infrared light should be exe- cuted. Also the searchlight crewman must be prepared to defend their searchlight with small armst grenades, and claymore mines.
b. Item: Searchlight as LP.
PLscussiont It has b^en proven that enemy mover.innt takes place eftor pn illumination mission has boon completed.
Observation; Grow members should remain on the searchlight position and listen intently immediately after completion of each mission,
c. Item: Intersecting so-rchlight beams.
• Discussion; Searchlights are positioned like an artillery pieco, Therofore, accurate azimuth information can bo obtainod from or set into a searchlight. This morns that when two searchlight boems in- tersect, the exact location of that intersection crn bo ascertained,
Observationi Intersecting searchlight beams ccn bo used for guidiaifi air strikes, pin pointing onony locations, and adjusting artillery firos.
d. Item; Integration of the searchlight into a porii:ober dofonoo.
Pi sous si on; A soai^hlight,, in order to bo off active, lias to bo en integral part of a defensive position. Thus, when the enemy is illuminated he can bo iamodiatoly brought under fire,
