Live musicEvery night of the week, the pubs andbars of Sheffield are alive with the soundsof up and coming new bands. Largervenues attract famous names fromaround the world. Our Students’ Union isa key venue for touring bands and DJs.

Eating outThere are hundreds of restaurants andcafes in Sheffield. Many of them are inthe West Street area near campus. Hereyou’ll find English, Indian, Italian, Thai,Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican,Lebanese – all at prices to suit thestudent budget. Vegetarians are cateredfor everywhere.

The Peak District National Park One of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty in the UK is justminutes from Sheffield by bike, bus or train. The Peak District NationalPark covers 555 square miles of unspoilt countryside. Its peaks, moors,rivers, woodland and wildlife are protected by law and preserved forthe benefit of the public.

Club scene Sheffield’s club life is world-renowned.Legends like The Leadmill continue tothrive, while clubs like Plug and Fez areadded to the eclectic mix all the time.The Forum hosts a different event everynight: salsa, hip-hop, retro funk, house.Bars like Bungalows and Bears insist ona laid-back atmosphere.

The Endcliffe VillageCatered and self-cateringaccommodation, in the quiet suburbswest of the city centre – a ten-minutebus ride from campus. There’s a mix ofbrand new apartments and refurbishedVictorian buildings. At the centre of thevillage is The Edge, a state-of-the-artcomplex with a bar, cafe, dining hall, ITfacilities and social space.

City and Central CampusSelf-catering accommodation isavailable in the city centre, within easywalking distance of the main campus.Lectures, the Students’ Union and theattractions of the city are all on yourdoorstep.

Catered accommodationMeals are provided and included in thecost. Rooms are single, with either aprivate bathroom or access to sharedfacilities. Most rooms have internetconnections. All our cateredaccommodation is in the EndcliffeVillage, a very short bus or bike ridefrom campus.

Self-catering If you prefer to be more independentand prepare your own meals, this is foryou. Self-catering accommodation isavailable in the Student Villages and inthe City and Central Campus area.Rooms are usually single with private orshared bathroom facilities, plusinternet connections.

How much does it cost?Rents vary depending on the type ofroom, facilities and location. For anoverview of accommodation and otherliving costs, see page 15.

Our guaranteeYou are guaranteed a place inUniversity accommodation providedyou meet certain simple conditions. For details see our website: www.sheffield.ac.uk/housing

Private accommodationPrivate accommodation in the city is anoption, but there is no guarantee ofavailability. The other drawback is youwon’t necessarily share with otherstudents. We don’t recommend privateaccommodation to students staying forone semester only, as it can be difficultto get a contract for such a shortperiod of time.

Your moneyWe can’t say how much you’ll spend in a year on food,socialising and clothes as every student is different. Wecan tell you a pint of milk costs around 48p. Thelaunderette in the Endcliffe Village costs £2.00 perwash, £1.00 per dry.

There are other expenses to account for, such as booksfor your course, and any travel you have planned. Again,costs depend on the individual. You could take the trainto London for as little as £15, or fly to Dublin fromaround £50.

Our Study AbroadProgrammeIf you’re an undergraduate and you’ve alreadycompleted at least one year of your degree, the StudyAbroad Programme is your opportunity to experiencelife in another culture and enrich your academiccareer. At Sheffield, we work hard to ensure that youmake the most of this opportunity.

We provide an experience geared towards theindividual, with an emphasis on academic quality. Themodules (courses) you take are part of our regularcurriculum, so you’ll study alongside home studentsand become fully integrated into British university life.You’ll be allocated an academic adviser in thedepartments where you take your modules to guideyou through your stay with us.

Expect new challenges and new rewards. Sheffield cangive you a fresh perspective on your subject and onlife. You’ll grow in confidence and independence,returning to your home institution to complete yourdegree with renewed enthusiasm.

When you arrive in the UKMeet and Greet schemeBefore the autumn semester begins, we send representatives toManchester airport to welcome international students as they arrivein the UK. We arrange transport to the campus and to Universityaccommodation. There is a small charge for this service and youneed to book a place. Please note the service is only available toautumn semester arrivals.

Residential orientation and inductionprogrammeThis scheme, which is open to students who come to Sheffield for afull year in September, gives you the chance to spend five days withother new international students preparing for studies and adjustingto life in Sheffield. We also run a mini-orientation for spring arrivals.The scheme is not compulsory, but we recommend it – it’s a greatway to meet people and get settled in before the semester begins.We will send you details before you leave for Sheffield.

Police registrationStudents from some countries are required to register with thepolice. You will usually be given more information by the ImmigrationOfficers at your port of arrival, or by the British Embassy when youreceive your visa.

The University LibraryServiceAs a student at Sheffield you’ll haveaccess to one of the biggest universitylibraries in the country, with some 1.3million items of stock.

Our £23m Information Commonscentre is open to all students 24 hours aday, seven days a week so you can studyhow you like when you like. There areover 500 PCs in the building andwireless internet access throughout.

Computer centres Full internet access and all othersoftware applications are available tostudents free of charge. Computercentres are situated all over campus:simply walk in, sit down and start work. To store your work, you will begiven a secure account on theUniversity network.

Whether you’re with us for a semesteror a year, you’re part of our communityand your wellbeing is important to us. Our team of doctors andnurses provide a full range of generalmedical services, normally withoutcharge, under the terms of the NHS.Additional services include travelvaccinations and health advice.

Get involvedThere are over 200 clubs and societiesbased in the Union, where like-mindedstudents get together to pursue theirhobbies and interests. And you don’t have to join a club to makethe most of your time here. Our award-winning Give It A Go scheme lets yousample different clubs and activitieswithout making a commitment. It’s agreat way to get to know people.

Seven days a weekLocated at the heart of the campus, theUnion’s shops, cafes and bars are openseven days a week, from breakfast intothe night.

There are club nights every night of the week, attracting big-name DJs and bands from around the world. The Union’s Film Unit has its own 400-seater cinema, with a fullprogramme of mainstream andindependent movies, voted for bystudents.

Sport and fitnessThe University recently invested £5.5 million in redeveloping its sportsfacilities. There’s a high-tech gym, a 33-metre swimming pool, 45 acres ofoutdoor pitches, tennis, squash andbadminton courts, and one of thebiggest bouldering walls in the country.

Our sports programme is one of thelargest of its kind in the country, withover 800 teams playing dozens of sports.The facilities are very popular with ourinternational students, who have a habitof making a big impression in oursporting leagues. Period of studyWe recommend you attend Sheffield for a fullacademic year. The benefits are obvious: youwill learn more, and your experience of livingand studying in the UK will be richer. If youcan’t spend a whole year away from home, it ispossible to apply for the autumn (fall) or thespring semester only and still have a veryrewarding experience.

General entry requirementsYou must be currently registered at your homeuniversity/college on an undergraduatedegree. You need at least a B average in yourmajor and related subjects.

If English is not your first language, you musthave the required English scores.

English languagerequirementsTo apply for a place you need a minimum ofIELTS 5.5 (with 5.5 in each of the fourcomponents).

English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC)If you haven’t met the required score, or if youwant to refresh your skills, we can help. TheELTC runs courses in English Language andStudy Skills to prepare you for theprogramme.

16 week English Language with StudyAbroadSpend 16 weeks studying in our EnglishLanguage Teaching centre from April to Augustand then study for a semester on the StudyAbroad Programme (September to February).Fees are applicable for the ELTC part of thecourse for all students. For students comingunder an exchange agreement, the tuition feesfor the second semester are covered by that.

Summer coursesFor applicants joining in September, there areELTC courses beginning in April, July, andAugust. The centre also runs an InternationalSummer School with four start dates fromApril to August.

Everything you need to know before you apply

• Courses at Sheffield are known asmodules. Depending on the subjectarea, these may include lectures,seminars, tutorials and labs.

• You will take modules alongsideBritish and international students onfull degree programmes at Sheffield.

• British degrees are structured so thatstudents declare their major subjectarea from the beginning and studythat subject for the duration of theirdegree. Students move up levels ofcourses to complete their degree.

• Students on these courses alreadyhave an in-depth knowledge of theirdegree subject and will often havestudied the subject at high schooltoo.

• Study Abroad students usually takemodules offered at level 100. Thislevel best suits students studying asubject for the first time.

• If you have completed more advancedclasses at your home institution in anappropriate department, you may beallowed to take level 200 and/or 300(3rd-year) modules. Don’t assume adirect correlation between the 100,200, and 300 levels used at Sheffield,and the course numbering system atyour home institution.

Credit values and workloadMost individual modules are worth 10 or 20Sheffield credits. The undergraduate workloadfor one academic year of a Sheffield degreecourse is 120 credits, or 60 for one semester. Youshould therefore choose a group of modules thatadd up to the appropriate number of credits foryour period of study abroad.

Choosing your modulesYou may choose modules across as manydepartments as you wish, as long as you can fitthem into your timetable, and you have therequired academic background for each module.

You and your academic advisers should lookcarefully at the modules on offer at Sheffield.You need to be sure that the level of study hereis right for you, and that the modules you choosemeet your degree requirements.

For information on a module and its credit valuesee our Directory of Modules atwww.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/course and click on the relevant department.

Most undergraduate modules are prefixed with anumber between 0 and 599. You are not eligibleto take graduate modules which start with a 6.

2STEP 2Read the OnlineApplication Notes andvisit the Study AbroadAcademic Handbook.

3STEP 3Complete the onlineapplication form,following the notescarefully.

6STEP 6Once all academicdecisions have beenreceived, the InternationalExchanges Unit willprepare your offerpackage. This will beemailed to you.

4STEP 4Scan your supportingdocuments in one PDF file. Email them to the InternationalExchanges Unit at:[email protected]. You don’t have to mailthem as well.

Funding your studiesStudying overseas is a major undertaking,personally and financially. We aim to help allinternational students identify potentialopportunities for financial assistance.

The Study AbroadProgramme Scholarships(exchange and fee payingstudents)Due to the generosity of our alumni, we areexcited to offer scholarships to students whohave accepted a place on our Study AbroadProgramme. Any exchange or fee payingstudent is invited to apply.

Scholarship winners will receive £1,000 if theystudy in Sheffield for a full academic year or£500 if they come for either the fall or springsemester.
