TO BE A VISIBLE SIGN OF CHRIST ’S PRESENCE AMONG US IN THE WORLD, BY LIVING OUT THE GOSPEL MESSAGE

OF GOD ’S LOVE IN MINISTRY AND SERVICE +

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 12, 2020

.

Pope Francis @Pontifex April 7 In these holy days let us stand before the

Crucified One and let us ask for the grace to live in order to serve.

May we reach out to those who are suffering and those most in need.

May we not be concerned about what we lack, but what good we can do for others.

In Christ's Peace,

ST. JOSEPH PARISH AURORA

WELCOME TO ST. JOSEPH PARISH All public Parish Masses and

activities are cancelled until further notice

but are still an active parish

Bishop David Malloy invites you to join him on the Diocese of Rockford Facebook page,

and the Diocese of Rockford website to pray the

Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary Wednesdays at 12:00PM. The rosary will be prayed

in both English and Spanish

Remember in your prayers all those affected by the coronavirus throughout the world...

Compassionate and loving father, in the face of confusion and concern

impart to us the calm of your presence. And you allow us to find hope and healing.

Be with those who serve the sick and give them your caring hands.

Be with those who lead and give them your spirit of wisdom. Be with those who have fallen ill

and give them your comforting heart. Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love.

Allow us at this time of trial today and serve as instruments of that love to all we meet.

We ask this in your name. Amen

The crowds began as soon as Jesus preached and healed Crowds to teach Crowds to inspire Crowds following Crowds to feed Crowds hailing him. Shouting Hosanna!! But then the crowds turned Crowds are calling for his crucifixion Crowds are striking and spitting Crowds are mocking as he dies And then there were no crowds Just a faithful few disciples At his tomb Silently mourning Crushed and confused For they knew he was Life Mary, Clopas’ wife and Mary Magdalene Waiting for what would be, anticipating It was to these faithful few Not to the crowds That Sunday sunrise and the angel brought Good News. Until we can gather again, Receive the Good News, you faithful few Gathered at the tomb Rejoicing! Inspired by Fr. Patrick Briscoe OP “And then there were no crowds”

It is hard to not be able to gather with you this Holy Week. You are very much in my prayers and I bring you before the Lord each day in Mass. This is a hard time for so many people and the disruptions to life are enormous. I’m sure you will especially feel this today when our normal celebrations with church and family are disrupted. In the midst of this, we remember our Lord telling us not to be afraid because he is with us through it all. In this Easter hope we persevere. I hope in some way that you are able to share the joy of the Resurrection with those around you. A blessed Easter to you from myself and the parish staff.

Andrea Bocelli’s “Music for Hope” Easter Concert will livestream on

Easter Sunday, beginning at Noon on Youtube

spirits of the world during the pandemic. As per a press release, Bocelli has chosen songs which send a

"message of love, healing and hope to Italy and the world" for his 'Music For Hope' live-stream.

The 61-year-old star will be accompanied by the cathedral's organist Emanuele Vianelli, as they perform the likes of

'Ave Maria' by Bach/Gounod and Mascagni's 'Sancta Maria'.

SUNDAY April 12, 2020

Our world wants us to believe that life is only what we make of it. Today, we realize how untrue that is. Life is ultimately about what God makes of it, and the resurrection of Jesus reveals this. Alleluia, Christ is risen! Who do you understand yourself to be? What we did yesterday, are doing today, and may do tomorrow

pretty much determine how we perceive ourselves. We even perceive Jesus this way in limiting our vision of him to

his earthly accomplishments. But, we know through today’s triumphant celebration that Christ is much more than his earthly legacy. The transfigured and resurrected Christ is the beginning,

the end, and the fulfillment of all things and every person. All that Jesus did stands in second place to who we now know

him to be. Do we realize that this will be our journey too? Christ is risen. Alleluia, alleluia!

Please consider online giving. Our parish is

grateful for your continued support.

Thank you!

Pray the Rosary

•Our intention this week is that the risen Lord will grant peace to all those suffering and those who

are caring for them during the pandemic.

•Please pray the Rosary at

home on Tuesdays at Noon

The cemetery reserves the right to remove any unsightly decorations violating these regulations. Thank you

We know not everyone is able to help right now, but we ask that those who can, do. We continue to have bills come in as well, so we're doing our best to try and make ends meet, We are adapting to circumstances and will continue the mission of the church the very best way we can.

Prayer to Send Your Guardian Angel to Mass O Holy Angel at my side Go to Church for me Kneel in my place, at Holy Mass Where I desire to be. At Offertory, in my stead Take all I am and own And place it as a sacrifice Upon the Altar Throne. At Holy Consecration’s bell Adore with Seraph’s love, My Jesus, hidden in the Host Come down from Heaven above. Then pray for those I dearly love, And those who cause me grief That Jesus’ Blood may cleanse all hearts And suffering souls relieve. And when the priest Communion takes Oh, bring my Lord to me That His sweet heart may rest on mine, And I His temple be. Pray that this Sacrifice Divine May mankind’s sins efface Then bring me Jesus’ blessing home The pledge of every grace Amen.

Thank you to everyone who donated food items and volunteered their time last week for HESED House. Because of the times,

we tried a new way to do things (online) and we appreciate everyone adapting to it. THANK YOU!

Perfect Contrition Where the individual faithful find them-selves in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect con-trition, coming from the love of God, beloved above all things, expressed by a sincere request for forgiveness (that

which the penitent is at present able to express) and accompanied by votum confessionis, that is, by the firm resolution to have recourse, as soon as possible, to sacramental confession, obtains forgiveness of sins, even mortal ones (cf. CCC, no. 1452). Perfect contrition means a sorrow for sin out of love for God. It does not mean being “perfectly sorry.” Perfect contrition is sorrow for sin out of love for God and His goodness, whereas imperfect contrition (while still a gift of God) is sorrow for sin due to a fear of hell, judgment and punishment (CCC 1452-1453).

Catechism of the Catholic Church

Act of Spiritual Communion is a beautiful and praiseworthy

tradition to recite an act of spiritual communion when one

is unable, for whatever reason, to receive Holy Communion.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite

myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Saint Alphonsus Ligouri.

"Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and Hallelujah is our song."

Saint John Paul II

Today is the day of

St. Joseph Parish Prayer

Lord, we are your people. Be with us always. Guide us, our pastor and his staff.

Lead us to live, learn and love as one community. Help us be a constant witness and visible sign of your love to all. Strengthen us in our ministry and our service to those in need.

Hear the intercession of St. Joseph, father and protector of our Savior.

Fill our hearts with our spirit and kindle in us the fire of your love. Amen

The ITalian Chapel Orkney, Scotland

On October 14, 1939, 834 men died on HMS Royal Oak when the ship was sunk by a U-47 German U-boat that snuck into Scapa Flow, the United Kingdom’s chief naval base in the Orkney Islands north of mainland Scotland. Italian prisoners of war were brough in to build barriers (causeways) between the islands to keep out any further U-boats.

While the Italian Chapel was the work of many skilled hands, it was truly the dream of only one man - Domenico Chiocchetti. He was one of some 450 prisoners were sent to the small island of Lamb Holm, a small uninhabited island in Orkney, Scotland.

Father Gioachino Giacobazzi of the Order of the Little Broth-ers. arrived in Lamb Holm on 30 September 1943. This was a great lift to the spirits of the prisoners. Mass was held on a table in the mess, but prisoner Domenico Chiocchetti wanted a perma-nent place of worship.

Two unused Nissan huts were put at their disposal for a chapel. Many men worked hard on the chapel, but it was Chiocchetti who came up with the design of the building, the artwork that graces its inside and the designs for the metal rood screen and candle holders. They lined the inside with wooden strapping, and plasterboard was attached to that. If the plasterboard had been somehow secured to the bare metal sheets it would have crumbled.

The outside of the Nissen hut was strengthened by using con-crete and wire ‘bolster’ nets. These nets were filled with rocks and used as the core of the Barriers. Balfour Beatty & Co Ltd, a local company, let the Italians have a dump truck of concrete at the end of every day. Gradually they built up layers of concrete along the whole length of the structure, reinforced with wire netting. This made it stronger and impervious to the weather. Electricity was fixed up in the chapel, extending their working hours.

Along with Chiocchetti there was a dedicated team of fellow prisoners who also worked on its construction, bringing various skills with them.

Chiocchetti used his skills as a church decorator to paint the brickwork that lines the walls of the nave. In this work he was assisted by his friend and fellow POW artist Giovanni Pennisi. You can see pillars by the sides of the door, decorative features along the roof and round ceiling bosses all painted to look 3D.

1-Looking toward the altar 2-The star-spangled lanterns that hang on either side of the sanctuary are made from a corned beef tin; skillfully cut to form a filigree lantern of intricate design. 3-Domenico Chiocchetti designed the artwork that graces the designs for the metal rood screen and candle holders. Giuseppe Palumbi, who had been a blacksmith in Italy before the war, spent four months constructing the wrought iron rood screen, which still complements the rest of the interior today.

1-Chiocchetti, unhappy with the ugly appearance of the front of the building, (inset) persuaded a local contractor to donate more con-crete. 2-The Italians cast blocks and created a beautiful façade, complete with bell-tower. 3-Camp artist Giovanni Pennisi, created the face of Christ above the door from terracotta.

When Chiocchetti went to war, his mother gave him a prayer card. On it was the painting ‘Madonna of the Olives’ by Nicolo Barabino. (below) It was this image that Chiocchetti used as his inspi-ration for the altarpiece.

On either side of the altarpiece painting are two windows painted to look like stained glass. The left one has a representation of St Catherine of Siena, while the right one depicts St Francis of Assisi.

The Italian POWs left Orkney on September 9,1944, leaving behind the chapel that still stands to this day as a remarkable symbol of their identity and faith.
