ABOUT OUR BOYD FAMILY

William Christian Kolbe Chris Kolbe will be our guest speaker at our reunion on

Saturday evening, October 1-, 2016. Chris is a native of Richmond, Virginia and a graduate of St. Christopher's School. He received a B.A;:-iffhisroryfrom William and Mary and an M.A. In history from the University of South Carolina. At the Library of Virginia, where he has worked for 3 5 years, he is the Archives Reference Coordinator. He has written several artides on Southern artisans, especially cabinetmakers, for the Journal of Early Decorative Arts.

Chris is a descendant ofMariaBoyd of Oakley who in 1858 married George T. Roberts of Charlotte County. He is descended from Alexander Boyd, the Eider's son, Robert, and then Richard and Lucy Anne Goode.

This will be an interesting evening with his program of "Alexander Boyd, Scottish merchant in colonial Virginia."

Todd Huebscher Todd and his wife, Elizabeth, traveled all the way from

Minnesota to visit the Boyd Tavern in 2007 and it made a lasting impression on them. Todd is a direct descendant of Alexander Boyd, the Elder, and he was very surprised and delighted to find pictures in the tavern of his ancestors.

Todd wrote, "I have only been there once almost 10 years ago but was very impressed with the history and hospitality of Mary Boyd Oettinger. I remember seeing her coming down the stairs and was amazed' at the resemblance to my grandmother. Her (mine) lineage is traced back to Mary Armistead Boyd-who married John Bennett and they moved on to New Salem, Illinois and then Petersburg, Illinois, where they knew Lincoln, who came of age there. I also remember being in the library there where Mary Anne showed me the letters from John Bennett. I also vividly remember the pictures on the wall of my great-great-great-great grandparents - Alexander Boyd, Jr.

and Matilda Burwell."

SOMETHING NEW Another link has been located in the Boyd Family chain

through the Goodes .. We have Jim Shew, Bland Crowder, and Harrison Taylor to thank for their combined efforts in finding these pictures and this information about three of our Goode relations.

U.S. Col. John Thomas Goode married Sarah Ravenscroft Buford (1840-1868) in 1857. They had four children. By now, CSA Col. John Thomas Goode married Carrie Sturdivant (1852-1874) in 1871 and they had no children. Thirdly, in 1876, he married Betty (Bessie) Margaret Morton (1856 -1890) and they had seven children. (Her portrait is in the Boyd Tavern.) Lastly, he married Ida Rosalie Jones (1850-1937) in 1894 and they had no children.

We have pictures of three of these wives.

Rev. Joseph R. Thornton and Water Beales

Rev. Joseph R. Thornton Guest Speaker at Celebration

Members of Boydton United Methodist Church traced the history of their congregation back more than 230 years a a Homecoming celebration in June 2015 with the help of a direct descendant of a Methodist church founder from the Colonial era.

The Rev. Joseph R. Thornton, who is related to the Boyd Family, is a fifth great-grandson of Col. Edmond Taylor, one of the fbunders of an early Methodist Church. Col. Taylor helped bring Randolph-Macon College to America, to Boydton (now located in Ashland, VA).

According to Thornton, the Taylor family left Virginia in the early 1800's and moved to western TN where they began Taylor's Tabernacle Kinfolk Camp Meeting, the oldest continuously o:wned ~nd op~rated.fap:iily camp meeting in America.

The camp meeting is a form of Protestant Christian religious service originating in England and Scotland. Camp meetings were held in frontier areas, where people without regular preachers would travel on occasion to a particular site to camp out, listen to itinerant preachers, pray, sing hymns, and take communion.

GENEALOGY

6

Each year the newsletter grows as more information is found about the Boyd Family and more family members are located. The Boyd Family is extremely large and it's always interesting to learn more about our ancestry and heritage. One important fact to keep in mind is that not all Boyd kin have the name Boyd to be easily associated with the Boyd Family.

Alexander Boyd, the Elder was the first of the family to emigrate to the "new world" coming to America for the first time in 1760. He marriedAnn Swepson in 1766 and they had 11 children, William, Robert, Richard, Alexander, James, David, John, Jane, Ann, Mary, and Suzannah,. All but Suzannah lived to adulthood. Six sons married and carried on the name Boyd and three daughters married Hawkinses with a total of 93 grandchildren. Of the grandchildren, there were 24 granddaughters with the Boyd name, when married took another name, 32 Hawkins grandchildren, and 24 grandsons to carry on the Boyd family name.

We are all still Boyd Family but this genealogical listing shows how our family is connected to many different families, with the emphasis on Burwells, Dandridges, Davises, and Spotswoods.

Two of Alexander, the Eider's sons, married sisters. Richard Blair Boyd ( 1771-1860) married Panthea Burwell (1781-1848), and Alexander, the Younger (1773-1836) married Matilda Burwell (1781-1848). Panthea and Matilda were daughters of Col. Lewis Burwell (1745-1800) andAnne Spotswood Burwell (1752-1789)

Anne Spotswood was the daughter of Col. John Spotswood and Mary Dandridge Spotswood, and granddaughter of Gov. Alexander Spotswood.

Col. Richard Blair Boyd and Panthea Burwell Boyd's daughter (Alexander, the Eider's granddaughter), Panthea Elizabeth Boyd (1821-1851) married Capt. John S. R. Burwell.

These marriages connect the Burwells, Spotswoods, and Dandridges to the Boyd Family. Panthea Burwell Boyd and Col. Richard Blair Boyd's daughter, Matilda Spotswood Boyd (1808-1852) married JoshuaA. Davis, II (1788-1845) connecting the Davises to the Boyds, the Spotswoods, the Dandridges, and the Burwells.

COL. LEWIS BURWELL

Col. Lewis Burwell was born in Williamsburg, Virginia and established his home with his family at "Stoneland" which was located near what is now, Chase City, VA. He married Anne Spotswood Burwell on March 24, 1768, and they had 12 children. They were: 1. Mary Burwell, m. Col. Samuel Goode 2. Armistead Burwell, m. Lucy Crawley 3. Ann Burwell, m John Ravenscroft, the first Bishop of NC 4. Elizabeth Burwell, m Edward Tabb 5. John Burwell, m. ? Woods 6. Christian Burwell, m. William Hamblin 7. Lewis Burwell, m. Sally Green 8. Panthea Burwell, m. Richard Boyd (continued)

9. Blair Burwell, m. Elizabeth Hatcher, 2nct, Delia Harris

10. Spotswood Burwell m. Mary Polly Green Marshall 11. Matilda Burwell m. Alexander Boyd, the Younger 12. Harriet Burwell, died in infancy

Col. Lewis Burwell married a second time to Elizabeth Harrison (d. 1824) and they had four children. They were:

1. H. Harrison Burwell m. Catherine Buford 2. P. Randolph Burwell m. Jane Sewell 3. Jean Blair Burwell m. Col. William Eaton 4. Martha Burwell m. Grandison Field, 2nd, John Field

"Stoneland" was built by Col. Lewis Burwell for his family. The Stoneland Complex consisted of a grist mill, a general store, iron mines and a forge, a sawmill, orchards, pastures, a still house and hundreds of acres of productive tobacco and grain fields worked by as many as 200 slaves.

Stoneland burned in 1815 killing eight people, four Burwells and four employees. The MacCallum-More Museum and Gardens of Chase City are enclosed by walls constructed of stones from the chimneys and foundations of different plantations around the countryside, of particular interest, stones from "Stoneland" Plantation.

A quick trip to Chase City, Virginia on Saturday afternoon is being planned to visit the monument of Col. Lewis Burwell and his family, which is placed on the grounds of St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Col. Lewis Burwell commanded a regiment in the Revolutionary War and served 14 years as a member of the Virginia Legislature.

One line of Col. Lewis Burwell's ancestry is traced back to England, Edward, III ( 1312-13 77).

*Edward Burwell and wife (unknown) of Bedfordshire, England had a son Edward Burwell. *Edward Burwell ofToddington, England m. Mary Armistead. They had at least one son, Armistead Burwell. *Armistead Burwell 'Yas a member of the House of Burgesses and married Christina Blair. They had at least one son, which was Col. Lewis Burwell.

This is another line of our ancestors which has been traced to King Edward III of England (1312-1377) who reigned (1327-1377) and shows how the Boyd and Spotswood families are connected. Other family connections are seen here

7

throughout the marriages including the Dandridges and the Davis es.

DID YOU KNOW???

There Were Boydton Boyds on the Marianna in 1849.

According to an article written by William B. Hill, February 20, 1949, in the Richmond Times Dispatch, we have this information:

"Your readers might be interested in a note on the voyage of the Marianna to California in 1849.

Alexander Heiskell in his journal which you published last Sunday referred to the election of Mr. Burwell as president and Mr. Boyd as vice-president of the company which set out for the gold fields in that ship. The journal of Mr. Boyd for that same trip is in existence, and belongs to his daughter, Mrs. G. H. Finch, of this place. (Mrs. G. H. Finch is now deceased.) He was Alexander Spotswood Boyd who left Boydton accompanied by his first cousin, Henry H. Burwell, his 29-year old nephew, Phillip Rainey, Jr., and by Paschal F. Gafford. His younger brother, John Ravenscroft Boyd was also a member of the company. Apparently, each of them subscribed $300 to become members of the Pacific Trading and Mining Company. What gold they found I do not know, but none of them became rich in California.

Mr. Boyd's journal is in greater detail than that of young Heiskell but he did not complete it. The last entry being dated June 19, before they reached Cape Hom. They had no easy voyage. Speaking of the heavy seas and the sea sickness from which they suffered, Boyd wrote on March 29: 'I believe that some aboard would have given everything they possessed to have gotten ashore and for myself I was opposed to going back only on account of particular circumstances, but I felt if I was only back in old Boydton I would freely give $500 and forfeit

10

my claims upon California gold. Every place in my own native village seemed lovely.'

Phil Rainey's father was postmaster of Boydton. There is a letter in existence written by his mother Aug. 14, 1849, in which she said: 'We have received several letters from the boys lately-Phil says give him the old Post Office forever .... '.

Holly and Madison Boyd, daughters of Robert Boyd, II and granddaughters of Alice Boyd and the late Otis B. Boyd.
