For the Rookie To find out what version of Microsoft Windows operating system you are using look no further than the bottom left corner of the screen. The Windows logo called the Start button has changed design with different versions. Looking at the Start button will help you determine what version you are using. Most computers and devices in the District will be using Windows 7, 8, or 10. Windows 10 is the newest version. You can compare your Start button with the images here to determine your version.

You can also visit this website and it will tell you what you are using

Do you have Windows 8? Does your Start Screen look like this?

Full of apps and tiles you didn’t put there and won’t ever use?

Well, fixing that is easy! Just click on the Windows logo in the bottom left corner or the Windows button on the bezel frame on the device to get to the Start Screen that has all your tiles.

Step 1: Find a tile you no longer want. For example, the large, green Store tile. Take your finger and press and hold on the tile until your screen looks like the image above.

Step 2: Now with your finger press on the “Unpin from Start” icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Adding tiles you do want is just as easy!

Step 1: On the screen with tiles, in the bottom left corner click on the arrow pointing down or you can swipe the screen with tiles up with your finger to get to the All Apps area.

Step 2: Find an app you want, and press and hold down on it with your finger

Step 3: Then, with your finger press the “Pin to Start” option located at the bottom of the screen. Viola! The app is now added to the tiles on the Start Screen for easy access.

Askie the Techie Dear Askie the Techie,

Which version of Outlook

should I be using at

work? – Lost in Email

Dear Lost in Email,

There are three different Outlook

programs you can use for work. (1) The

first one is the Outlook Desktop version

that is usually an icon on the taskbar at the

bottom of your screen. The Desktop is

the fullest featured of the three.

(2) The other version is Outlook on the

Web within Office 365 that you can get to

by going on the Internet at home or work

to this website http://portal.office.com.

Outlook on the Web is the easiest way to

check and send Email from any device with

Internet access. (3) The third is Outlook

Mobile App for both Android and Apple

devices. Check out our resources on all

three of these Outlook programs on our

Department website – click here

Dear Askie the Techie,

Is there an easier way for me as a

teacher to change the student

password for them to login to the

computer at school when they forget?

– Upper and Lower Case

Dear Upper and Lower Case,

Thanks for asking. There is a new way to

change student passwords that allows

the teacher to create an easy to

remember one for students to login and

then the student is able to make their

own secure one. Check out this video on

how to do it
