For Pare»*» To PonderThe full benefits and disadvantages of the motion pictures

and radio carnal be estimated now. Both are too young. They are, as yet, in periofc <>i development. Their ultimate destiny has not been deterinimd and k is not wool gathering to imagine that their destiny has a single goal, and their absorption, one by the other, and the o ntinuation as such to greater heights

But this should be realized by all parents. Sconce and psychology cannot yet tell exactly the influence the motion pictures and radio are having un our livis.

Parents, too often untutored and ununderstanding, must, nevertheless, carve out their awn philosophies regarding the motion pictures and radio.

W hat harm and what good each does for a child is open to conjecture.

The child who sit» before a radio and spins the dials to arrive at a favorite program may be sitting in more than a draft. He may be in a position where his own future is being undermined On the other hand, he may be strengthening himself for the future.

That is for the parent to decide and it is a difficult question. It goes without saying enormous loads of twaddle come

out (¿ .the loud speaker every night. There is gun fighting. There arc witches There are gangsters There are bed time tales. "There are snide but bewitching voices paid for tiy the advertisers.

A child alive in such a world can very easily find himselt in a puzzling maze. W hat is right and what is wrong? He is too young to know: but he is not too young to be impressionable All the fake advertising that comes floating in via the radio tubes is absorbed by the child. His mind is attacked by the fancies and foibles of minds which are very often not responsible to anything but money.

There are programs of elementary music, of good lessons, even of .respiration to be found in the radio.

Parents mu* decide for the child what is good and let him have only that.

The same for motion pictures. The Walt Disney color films are joys to behold, for adult and child alike. Must of the pen and ink stuff are harmless fantasies whiih could not harm, even by the widest stretch jof the imagination.

But large doses of die trash which adorns many screens can do nothing but injury to the unsuspecting child.

Parents should be on the lookout. In both the motion pictures and radio are potentialities

that can be converted into vast good. Parents should try to obtain as much of this as possible fcr their children.

Tennis In LyndhurstFor a game that's comparatively new to Lyndhurst, tennis

has taken a firtn hold here. Each year there is a championship tournament which, according to the increasing numbers that (ran the lists, picks up in popularity year after year.

T o the players who are spirited enough to enter the tournament and to the men who make the arrangements for th,: tournaments, Lyndhurst owes a vote of thanks. They are establishing a tradition which in other years will bear fruit.

He took tunc out to write a letter to your Observer (picture enclosed showing tuna catch) to clear up once and for all, doubt of the veracity of his fishing stories. The letter fc41ows:

Dear Observer:I am given to understand through your columns that

some doubt still exists in the mind of skeptics that 1 did not participate in the landing of some big tuna fish quite a while ago. ■

Enclosed herewith you will find a snapshot of the fourteen tuna that were landed by our party. Close scrut iny will prove to you that these fish are not myth». The fish which I am holding by the tail measured about 29 inches from stem to stem.

Included in that party were Messrs. Epstein and Gaber of Rutherford, Hippy Staab of Ridgefield and Jim Powell erf. Clifton. 1

I was on the high seas again last Friday, August 13th, when we caught 61 bonita, all about three and one half to four pounds each. W e also caught one bluefish weighing about seven pounds.

If any of the skeptics are still from Missouri, have them contact me and 1 shall be happy to show them a good time on the ocean.

There are plenty of sportsmen in our town, and I wonder if it would be inappropriate at this time to suggest the promotion of a deep sea fishing club. If any are interested, I should be happy to arrange a conference.

I remain, yours for sportsmanship,SYLVESTER GOLDBERG.

Well, there is the proof of the pudding. The picture certainly shows no dearth of tuna fish There's a whole slew of them and the one measuring 29 inches that Mr. Goldberg is holding by the tail looks like a monster which must have fought much like our blue and gold footballers before giving up the

We are no longer skeptical. Mr. Goldberg does catch fish— htiRc amounts of fish—and big ones. Anyway, what we heard were not the true facts, but just rumor« about him not catch ing the big tuna. Probably they were stories spread by a jealous, not so skillfull, fisherman. But we can't help thinking, what with the 26 pounder looking like such a brute, how hard ------it must have been to land that 60 pounder. Of course, again * * * ---------- i w illiam G ill ,,t u s Po«t Avenuewe believe Mr. G<4dberg (although we didn't sec the picture Mr and Mra. ^W stch in g the simon „ ____Hackensack Monday nights wou give anyone the impreaaion thai thia boxing business is a very serious one. The way theee boys throw science to the wind and walk in punching is something to marvel at and it'a all for a medal and alao to *ee their names in print. Th* gate receipts? We wonder too wh< gets all the money from theae amateur contests. 1 had the pleaaure on Monday nigbt o f watching one of our own local boys score a clean- cut K. t). in two rounds (A ! De- Flumeri of Lyndhurst). This mskes three K. O.’s for Lyndhurst in tw weeks.

In two of the contests of the opening night A l Denisco and AndySettembrino both of Lyndhurst- scored two round K. O.’s to make a perfect batting average for the local talent.

Enough about the amateur fighters. I watched Tommy F a rr go through his paces at I,ong Branch last week snd I got the impression thst he is fs r from the fighter some folks think he is. I wonder why with so msny American fighters trying to make a Jiving, who on record are better fight ers than Farr, we have to go to Europe to get a challenger for the heavyweight championship. M y guess is as good as the next, so I pick Loais to stop the Mumbling Miner from Wsles in three rounds, because I always found that it takes more than a big heart and a strong chin to win s fight.

f Jg 0Jim m y Marsh well known ft£ht

promoter and former Lyndhurst r*ai dent is now running a fight club in California and doing a very goodjob of it. (Good luck Jim m y)!

K id Chocolate, Cubsn Bon Bon is doing very well in hi« com« bifck. He has won 26 e f 27 fights one resulting in a drsw with Schoolboy Friedkin of Brownsville. Chocolate is boxing the main ten round event at the Garden this week, with Johnny DeFoe the tougheat lighter he In , been asked to fight aince he atartel on the comeback trail. Newark Bears Enter Stretch 25

Games In FrontWhile the fans throughout the In

ternational league circuit admit the Bears are a aure pop for the gon falon, Manager Oaoar V itt refuses to ride with them in their opinion»*. Down in his heart, Ol Os is certain his chsrges sre going to grab the flag, but until they actually clinch it he refuses to make any predictions. The skipper is taking no chances t.> flirt with any jinx. Only this sreek he begsn to smile sgsin and the sn- nouncement that Pitcher* Spurge«» Chandler had been sent from the New York Kankees snd John N ig^ lin^ from the Kansas C ity Blues >nad< him happy. They are to help the team ia the drive down the stretch.

As the Bruins hesd for the wire the two extra hurlers, both with plenty of experience should he of untold vslue. I t w ill aaabie V it t to give his present siaff o f Ringers an extra day or two of rest between games. Niggeling won 18 and lost 15 with the Blues last year who Anished third. He was one a f the sees of the stsff. These two men should help the Vittmen to se t a new league record for victories in one season snd also help them to ac complish their ambition to finish at least 25 gsmes ahead of the team that grabs second honors.
