Interact Club-Old Folk’s Home Visit Report

On the 31 July 2015, the Interact Club of Pegasus

International School had their first project. A visit to Graceville

Old Folks’ Home, it was led by one teacher and participated by

a total of seventeen students. The students consisted of

Interact Club members as well as students from Secondary 2

and IGCSE 1. There were 15 friendly senior citizens that were

aged from 80-101.

The students had plenty of fun getting to know the old folks

and interacting with them for an hour. “It felt great to know that

I made them happy. It’s good that we could talk to the folks

there and learn more about their daily life,” said Yie Xin, 13.

Though it was fun, some of the students felt the presence of

loneliness and sadness in them, so they thought to

themselves that they would never do such things to their

parents. “I was very touched. It made me think about when my

parents grow old, I would never send them to a home but

instead I’ll take care of them. I hope that the folks at Graceville

will continue staying healthy,” quoted from Rebecca Tien, 14.

The members of the Interact Club provided delicious fruits for

the elderly to enjoy. Bananas, pears, oranges and grapes

were sliced and served throughout the visit as we want them

to be in good shape. A day before the visit, all the participants

gathered around to practice a few songs to be sung at the

home. The students sung with grace and it looked like the

practice had paid off. “It was a challenge to sing as it started

raining heavily but I still could see the spirit in us,” said our

teacher Ms Thivya.

All in all, it was an amazing experience for all the students

despite the heavy rain. Everyone had a great time chatting

and singing for the old folks. “I have gained a lot from the visit.

I’ve learned how we should treat our parents or old folks,” said

Aashika, 15. Our teacher was also surprised with the way we

carried out our first visit independently and she was grateful to

have them as Interactors. Our Interact Club can only hope for

more successful events that contribute to people, no matter

what age or beliefs.

Interact Club-Rotary Club Meeting

On 11 August, 10 students from the Interact Club of Pegasus

International School, the teacher advisor, Ms Thivya, and

principal, Mr Michael attended the meeting at the Rotary

House and dinner at Grand Straits Garden after.

The students that participated as well as Ms Thivya and Mr

Michael had a chance to meet the Johor Bahru District

Governor, Mr Philip Chong, who flew in from Sabah. The

main purpose of the meeting was to get to know the District

Governor and know more about the functions of Rotary Club

as well as Interact Club. Other Rotarians and Interactors from

SMK Convent also joined the meeting.

This year’s Rotary Club motto is ‘Be a gift to the world’. “It is

important to have youth participation as they will be the next

leaders of the world. As Interactors, especially from the

board, you will get to meet many people. Not just Interactors

and Rotarians but people from the community as well. “You

must study hard or you can’t be a gift to the world” quoted

from Mr Philip Chong at the meeting. He told us that Rotary is

now 110 years old and was founded in Chicago.

The District Governor also advised on how we should run our

projects. We should have one in-house project and one that

has to do with community service. “They don’t have to be big

major projects. They can be simple ones like painting an old

wall. Get the hang of it first before trying to do something

major.” Another important event would be International

Understanding Day. He shared with us that in Kota Kinabalu,

they would have IU bazaar where many schools will choose a

shopping centre to hold their event. Not only do they

showcase foreign countries, they also draw people to visit the

shopping centre as well.

After that, we took a tour around the dialysis centre below the

Rotary House and learned how the machines work and some

of the causes that lead people to the dialysis centre. One of

the causes is taking too many painkillers. We also learned

that they are having a Patients’ Day on the 9 and 10 of

September. It is a day where they try to make the patients

smile and just forget about how bad their condition is, even if

just for one or two days.

At 7 PM, we joined the Rotarians for dinner at the Grand

Straits Garden. It was an enjoyable time and everyone had

learned quite a lot from this trip. We hope that there will be

more chances like this to participate in Rotary Club activities.

I-Quiz at Excelsior International School

The Rotary Club of Johor Bahru Sentral and the Rotary Club

of Bandar Sunway hosted the 2015 General Knowledge Quiz

for Interactors at Excelsior International School on 22 August.

The event was open to many schools in the region, allowing

students to test their knowledge in the subject areas of

science, geography, history, television and film. The winning

team in this regional final will be asked to join the main I-Quiz

held at Sunway University. The top three teams at the end of

the main I-Quiz will have the chance to compete for

scholarship for Sunway University.

Three of our students from IGCSE1 Alicia Tan Shu Qi, Afiqah

Iman, and Ashrina Kaur Dhillon formed a group to compete in

the event under the supervision of Ms. Thivya. The group

competed well but were not able to make it to the finals. We

wish to congratulate these students on their efforts for the I-

Quiz. We hope to participate in more academic competitions

such as this in the future.

Nursery Project

Having a nursery (garden) in school is an advantage for the

students as it plays an important role in outdoor learning and

boosts problem solving skills among the students. The PIS

students have done a great putting this nursery together for

the use of science class as well as improving the

environment of our school.

In the initial stage, the planting ground was just an empty

area filled with weeds and grass. First, we cleared this area.

Then we cultivated the tomato seeds until they were fit for

germination. During this phase each student was assigned

with several duties. Some were given the responsibility to

water the plants and others were to tend the plants. After

germination, the seedlings were transferred to the planting

beds. This step was crucial as it ensure the plants are able to

get enough nutrients and sunlight to grow strong and healthy.

Now we are at the final phase of this project. I would like to

express my gratitude for the support I have received from all

the staff, teachers, students and parents which without their

help it will be a difficult task to perform.
