Dear Readers,

All these recent hartals have had us craving the normalcy of school life, even the crazy bits, like early mornings, traffic jams, and exams. For most of us, school starts off with a big general assembly, which is probably the most anxiety-ridden, and yet essential part of each school day. This week, we weigh in on the pros and pitfalls of school assemblies. Our heartfelt thanks to Md Muazzem Hossain, Assistant Headmaster, Ideal School and College; Brig Gen (retd) Kaiser Ahmed; Principal, Scholastica(Uttara); Jamil Parvez, PE Coordinator, Scholastica; Serajul Islam, Coordinator, Manarat International School; and Rifat Chowdhury, Faculty, Playpen, for granting us interviews.

Feel free to weigh in on how you feel about any of the issues we print! Check us out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dhakatribunetmag. And if you’re looking for stuff to do during hartals, send us your doodles, flash fiction and room pics to [email protected] safe!Love from the TMAG desk

Deck up your plateCut an apple and a slab of cheese into four parts, keeping the cheese in four solid blocks. Insert colourful toothpicks into each piece of cheese. Allow the toothpick to go through the apples and you have a pirate’s sailing ship for breakfast. Cut out the edges from a slice of bread and make it slightly round. Poach an egg, cut out a couple of square shapes from the white parts. Place it on the bread to make it look like eyes, sprinkle some black pepper on them to complete the eyes. For the lips, roll out a strip of beef or chicken salami in the shape of a smile.

Delish leftover tricks If you have leftover fried chicken or roast beef, sandwich it between two waffles or brown bread and smother it with maple syrup. Place the waffle sandwiches facing each other and draw a C shaped smile with either chocolate or strawberry syrup. This may not sound very appetising till you take a generous bite into this gooey bready goodness and your morning is made right there!

Yolky goodness Eggs are a lifelong enemy to most of you, but this is one round of goodness that can be made oh so delish with one more

ingredient – the sausage. Take three sausages, fry them for a minute or so in olive oil and leave it on the side to rest. Leave two centimetres from the end of the sausage and slit it with a knife. So, now there are two ends to the sausage. Pull the ends in the opposite direction

and secure them with a toothpick so you have a heart shape.

Separately prepare scrambled eggs, a poached egg, and an omelette. Place your heart shaped sausage frames on a plate and fill them up with each egg And voila! Natasha RahmaN

TAHSIN MOMIN

BEauty and thE BrEakfast

Attributes You’ll find various kinds of rugs in furniture stores. Let’s start with long pile shag rugs, these are one of the most inviting and comfortable among rugs. Also, its irregular patterns give it a messy look. Likewise, colourful and lively, braided rugs strongly hold a bohemian sense inside. Cheap yet gorgeous, plastic rugs are the lightest. If you’re looking for simplicity and elegance, the honey coloured sisal rugs should serve your purpose.

TrendsJazz up the corners of your room by adding these rugs, while you’re at it, consider bright colours and unique textures. Creatively shaped rugs will help give your room a different characteristic because odd shapes and quirky designs create a dramatic focal point. Vertically and horizontally striped rugs are very much the trend. Over that, you can opt to place colourful braided round-shaped rugs to enhance the look. Also consider the classy tiny floral designs or consider combining two or three different sized rugs. Imagine putting together a big circle shag rug with two yellow yolk like giant pillows on top of it. Add to that a crescent moon shaped small rug and you have your own smiley face. Aside from these, you can also create your own combinations of rugs. Your room will look more spectacular if the rugs are of colours that compliment the interior colour schemes.

thE ruG-it aPProaChAfter cleaning up the clutter in your room, something feels missing. An important part that is left out while refurbishing your bedroom is the floor. Want to give it a fresh look? Throw in a few rugs to add an equal amount of attention, as you would with furniture and walls in your room. However, before you do so, you need to consider choosing the right material and also know how and where to place the rugs. TMAG brings you a few rug rules for your room.

When was the last time you enjoyed a delicious breakfast? Can’t jog your memory that far? Breakfasts nowadays are either gulped down with orange juice or forced down your throat by your folks. Plus, the taste of bland rotis and aalu bhaji doesn’t coax you to dive into your day’s first meal. Here we have for you meals that look so appetising that it will surely make your stomach growl, even in the wee hours of the rushed morning

DIU Cultural Program

The students of Batch 37/B from the Department of Law of Dhaka International University (DIU) recently arranged a discussion session and cultural programme on the occasion of their 1st anniversary.

Wake up early. Yes, it may seem like trekking in the Himalayas but it is the first thing you should do if you want to avoid the tensed moments during the journey. But it is important to ensure that you’ve had a healthy amount of sleep. And for this, you can go to bed early. You may have to sacrifice a few episodes of your favourite late night show, but it may well save you from all your worries.

Another very popular and efficient means of travelling to school is carpooling with friends or cousins who live nearby. Sure, there will be times when you wait for the others as they take their time to get ready, but unless you are someone who likes to catch up on some sleep during the journey, you’ll like the company.

You can further utilise your time by revising for the test that day or if you don’t have one, simply go over what has been taught recently.

As a result you can be the first to shoot your hand up when your teacher asks about something that has been taught in

the last class. And that feeling is excellent, to say the least.

All that being said, timing is the main thing. The better you time yourself,

more the benefits you are likely to reap. Hopefully, you won’t have to endure the awful feeling of waiting at the late-lines anymore! Baizid haque JoaRdeR

sChool hour rush, no morE! How many times have you promised yourself that you would wake up earlier the next day, while waiting for a traffic signal en route to school? For average teenagers, a normal weekday morning may well mean the frustrating job of waking up on time and getting themselves ready for school. It may seem very easy but we can all agree that it is not. And that’s not even the worst part of the story. The entire journey from your house to your respective school still awaits, like a creepy green-eyed monster

Basic lookThe most practical outfit for school and one that can be done up in a variety of ways is pants and shirts. Your pants could be anything from bell bottoms, formal pants, suede or jeans. Your tops on the other hand, could be either shirts, casual t-shirts, butterfly cut tops, kaftans or fotuas. They look decent and are versatile enough to change with the current trend.

Formal lookYou may belong to a non-uniform enforcing institution but do keep in mind the political situation and social conventions pertaining to the city you live in. While skirts are considered formal, anything above the knee could raise some eyebrows. Formal pants with a shirt and a ladies blazer also look very smart as does a saree.

Cultural lookEveryone gets tired of wearing casual clothing to school. Having said that, an indo-bangali cultural look could go a long way to break the monotony. Sleeveless is great for summer but think twice about revealing too much skin, it is school after all. Cotton kameezes with long sleeves or butterfly cuts look very elegant. Do some front roll ups for your hair and sweep it into a side ponytail - it’s a definite head turner.

Party lookClass parties spell fun. Go all out with colours and don’t forget to splash around with neons. Laces and frills look a tad bit more decent than spaghetti straps and you may want to spare that a thought. Skirts, flounces, silks, and bold

patterns are great. Take care to not have any offensive message on your t-shirt, it could seem disrespectful to your teachers and classmates.

FaceYour skin is exposed to the sun a lot in school and the best way to avoid a tan, if that is what you want, is to apply sunscreen. However, most sunscreens make skin look oily and shiny which is really not what you’d want. Use a tinted moisturiser that has SPF protection. This will not only keep your skin moisturised and protected from UV rays, but also even out your complexion and make it glow, almost naturally. Run a very, very thin line of kohl pencil on your eyelid. It makes your eyes look bigger and brighter. You could go for a sweep of mascara but it is not a must.

LipsA tinted lip balm is a sure fire way to add some whisper light colour to your lips that the teachers will have a hard time proving. Go for it but remember to keep it very light. Peach or baby pink works well. Most lip balm jars are small enough to fit into your pencil case so you can go for touch ups before the year book picture.

HairSince most schools only require your hair to be neatly tied up, there are a number of ways you can experiment with it. Go for a French twist one day, a high bun the next. As long as you don’t

make it elaborate, most schools go easy on tied hair. One very easy way to glam up your look if you have long hair is to

make a front pouf and a basic ponytail with the tail tendrils slightly curled.

muNiRa fidai

It’s easy to grumble about uniforms when you don’t know the wardrobe dilemmas faced by kids who go to schools that don’t enforce uniforms. Uniforms make it very easy as you have lines already drawn out for you. Non-uniform enforcing school students have to make that painful wardrobe decision themselves and more often than not, err. TMAG helps you decide better, what is appropriate yet trendy

ARIES (MAR 21-APR 19) Avoiding responsibilities this week is a no-no. If you and

you’re partner have been drifting apart, talk it out and bridge the gap. Capisce?

TAURUS (APR 20-MAY 20)

You’re really not in the mood to take people’s laid back

attitude. Expect miscommunication with a loved one mid week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 20) If you have been a little redundant on the romantic

front, a little socialising can bring about a scene you least expected.

CANCER (JUN 21-JUL 22)

Don’t freak out if a previous relationship shows up at

your doorstep with the intentions of rekindling past love. Be strategic about it.

LEO (JUL 23-AUG 22)

Financial matters at home could make you a little cranky

this week. Try not to blow your fuse at family members; at times like this, they’ll need you the most.

VIRGO (AUG 23- SEP 22)

If you’ve been putting off having “the talk” with your

partner, now is a good time to do it. If they’ve got something to say about you, zip it and listen.

LIBRA (SEP 23- OCT 22) Increased interactions with people this week will be a

win-win. Make sure you take plenty of notes of the conversations you have.

SCORPIO (OCT 23-NOV 21)

If someone has managed to tick you off, you have to let

them know exactly what went wrong on their end. Don’t pout, just get it off your chest.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21) Be careful about the things you say this week; make sure

it’s not one of those things that create an awkward silence.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN19) A friend may come bearing news that will be of benefit to

you this week. Piling up on paperwork will not serve you well.

AqUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 18)

Don’t let depression get the best of you; read a book, write

a story, better yet get involved with some kind of event. Diversion will do you good.

PISCES (FEB 19-MAR20)

If someone owes you something, now’s a good time

to ask for it. Just go for it.

Whether you want to help the environment, cut down on your gas expenses, or simply exercise outdoors, cycling is a great way to get fit and have fun at the same time

road BikEs 101

Except buying the right bike isn’t as simple as visiting the store around the street corner. First, you must think about exactly where you will be riding and how often. Is comfort your biggest concern or are you more of a speed hunter? Whatever you decide, there is a bike that fits. Here are the three most popular types of bicycles, along with details that will help you pick the best one for your needs.

Mountain bikes (Tk13,500+) are rugged. They’re built with stronger components than other bikes because they’re intended for off-road riding on hills and over rocks. The knobby tires and suspension systems on these bikes give them better traction and shock absorption on rough terrain, but they can be used on roads too. With most mountain bikes you can expect 26-inch wheels, 21-27 gears, a forward-leaning seating position, and lower gears for easier hill climbing.

Comfort bikes (Tk8,500+) are similar to mountain bikes, but are designed to be more comfortable. With a shorter distance between the seat and the handlebars, it results in an upright seating position. Expect a smooth ride on a comfort bike, as most will have 26-inch wheels, 7-24 gears, and other

comfort-enhancing features like softer seats, wide pedals, shock-absorbing seat posts, and front forks.

BMX bikes/dirt bikes (Tk5,000+) are general-purpose bikes that can be used for basic transportation or dirt riding. Smaller than other bikes, these typically feature 20-inch wheels, one gear, short wheelbase frames, and knobby tires.

Bike framesNow that you have a good idea about the type of bike that will meet your needs, you’ll also have to decide on a

bike frame, which is available in two different materials, aluminium and steel. While each has its own qualities, what really matters is finding a bike that fits your budget and your needs.• Steel frames have classic style.

They’re durable, easily-repaired, affordable, and lightweight. But if left to the elements, these can rust easily.

• Aluminium frames have modern style. They’re durable, affordable, lightweight, and rust-resistant.

Frame size and style• Finding a bike that fits the length

of your legs and the size of your torso is very important. Almost all bikes come with adjustable frames; a bike shop can adjust the frame for you.

• Getting the right size is an absolute must for safety. A bike that’s too large for you makes it difficult to start, stop, and get on or off.

Before you go ahead and buy a particular bike, take it out for a lengthy test ride, a quick spin around the block won’t be enough. While you’re out, make sure the seat is comfortable and you can reach the handlebars easily. If you’re not satisfied, keep trying other bikes until you find the perfect fit. A bike is a big investment, the better it fits you, the more you’ll ride it. Now strap on your helmet and hit the road!

Unless you’ve been home-schooled all your life, at some point you must have experienced the phenomenon we call “school assembly.” Whether you’re done with all that and headed for college, or still racing the clock to make it in before the bell rings, these assemblies are integral to the experience of school. This week the TMAG crew and friends talked to students and education professionals of a number of schools about the pros and cons of school assemblies By: RuBaB Nayeem KhaN, PRagya RahmaN, muNiRa fidai, saudia afRiN, avita maheeN

the school. Motivational speeches can be conveyed to students through an assembly as well. An assembly is an effective way to bring students and teachers under one roof and help create an interactive environment for all.- Md Muazzem Hossain, assistant headmaster, Ideal school and College

ISDwhich is one of the few institutions in Dhaka on the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, also does things a little differently. “We conduct various co-curricular programmes (CCP) during our assemblies in both primary and secondary schools” the Co-curricular Activities Co-ordinator tells TMAG. “During assemblies we talk about our involvement with sports and voluntary work with JAAGO and Smile Foundation. CCP registration notices are also given during assemblies. Videos of our achievements and involvements are shown during assemblies. Musical compositions are done by students and teachers, and art competitions are also conducted for our primary school.”

What happens at these assemblies

hot toPic 7tmag

pHOTOS: bIgSTOck

For most of the schools we surveyed, the day begins with a gathering of all students, teacher and staff, where recitation of verses from the Quran is followed by the singing of the national anthem, before segueing into important announcements for the day. Each school tweaks this basic formula, adding and subtracting features and activities according to school policy. Most schools will take this basic formula and tweak it according to their policies.

Sir John Wilsonfor example, incorporates a showcase component into their assemblies. Students will present art work or science projects, teachers will speak about topics of interest. This is done to build public-speaking skills in both students and teachers.

such a Pt...Some schools incorporate a few minutes of light Physical Training (PT), comprising stretching and agility exercises. While many students cite this as an awkward way to begin the morning, teachers see the sense of it.

“Though PT is not a part of morning assemblies, doing this everyday would make it a regular habit which is good for health,” says Jamil Parvez, Physical Education Coordinator at Scholastica. “If done regularly, they are good for the muscles, heart and generally the body.”

“Morning assembly helps refresh the day through brief physical exercises. It allows the students to focus their minds, when attending classes and because of the nature of the physical drills, the functioning of the body, which remains torpid because of sleep, becomes more efficient and makes them more productive throughout the day,” says Serajul Islam, Coordinator, Manarat International School and College.

late to the partyOne of the purposes of having a morning assembly is to teach the students the importance of being punctual. How do the schools approach instilling this virtue into the youth of a nation renowned for tardiness?

Scholastica has “late lines” reserved for the unfashionably unpunctual. At Sunbeams, students are kept back at the gate if they are late for assembly. They are then lectured on discipline later after the assembly is over. Needless to say, the teachers selected to lecture the students aren’t always the most popular ones. SJW prefers to send warning letters to the parents of the chronic latecomers. Manarat International takes a hard line by closing the gates before assembly begins. Interestingly, Child Heaven International doesn’t believe in punishing children for being late.

Most schools here enforce a uniform code, and even those who don’t expect their students to be well-groomed and presentable. How far are these schools willing to go to ensure spiffy students?

Regular uniform checks are carried out during the assemblies at Bangladesh International School and College. Dirty uniform, unpolished shoes, untrimmed nails, and long hair on boys are noted. Ditto for students carrying cellphones. The offenders are separated, lectured, and their parents are notified. Only then can they go to class.

“Yes, I do believe it,” declares the headmaster of Ideal School, on being asked about the importance of proper grooming. “They’re supposed to learn from us, and I believe educational institutions are supposed to be that way. But then again, it’s also the parents’ responsibility to teach their children to behave and be modest.”

grooming groaners

As schools become more inclusive and multicultural, some of them are adapting to accommodate students of different ethnicities and backgrounds. ISD and SJW, for example, do not include Surah recitation in their assemblies, and singing of the national anthem is restricted to once a week for SJW and only on occasions of national and cultural significance, like Pohela Boishakh or Ekushay for ISD. Interestingly, Manarat International, which is branded as an Islamic school, provides exemption to students of different faiths.

Startup weekend and 54h were two very flattering remarks for Dugdugi. Saddam and Wakil Ahmed Isnad, the initiators of Dugdugi started their voyage through a business pitch and consequently by forming a group.

Wakil says: “Most groups had seven to eight members while we were only two. Interestingly, many judges didn’t come to our stall. The foremost challenge was that we got very little chance to interact with them.” But winning the second position boosted the team’s morale and reinforced that the plan was, in fact, going to work.

From the very beginning, Dugdugi aimed of allowing people to download songs legally and more conveniently. Also, to make it more feasible, they added the option of streaming music. Gradually approaching musicians and audio labels, the team launched their first prototype website with 40 songs on April 1. Mentioning about the situation with artists revenue in Bangladesh,Wakil says: “This being our dream project, we designed the whole model to include the artists as well. Hence, besides our profit, they can get pay-offs for their creations too.”

Dugdugi has huge plans for social music networking and interaction, which will be launched at the beginning of next year. On this matter Saddam says: “It’s not just a place where people will comment on music, it’s a place where we connect with other musicians, we want to create a social media ecosystem and platform. In this system, people can create their own profiles or follow others. He also mentioned that if anyone wants to follow other influential musicians through this, they can.” Saddam refers to the whole thing as a

Facebook for music.

Saddam’s opinion on the music industry’s current situation is: “An industry that needs to be disrupted.” In agreement with Saddam, Wakil says: “A lot of potential just needs proper direction, today or tomorrow it will boom like a bucket full of water.” Concerning ongoing work, Wakil says: “Currently, G series is on board with Dugdugi, along with seven more in the pipeline. Hopefully all labels will join us soon.” Since Dugdugi started with underground brands, they would always want to keep their doors open

for them, declared Saddam. Who is the boss here? Saddam’s

immediate reply was: “We don’t follow any hierarchy. Nobody is boss here.” Both initiators are quite sure and happy; they have been successful in reaching their audience. Saddam says: “The responses from people in the music scene has been fantastic. People have wanted a platform of this sort for a long time. And we get lots of positive feedback as well, like requesting songs or wanting more from us.”

Their music lifeSaddam refers to himself as purely a

listener though he reveals that as a teenager, he made sound systems and speakers with his brother. He proudly said: “It was far better than what could be bought at the market during that time.” In the meantime, he was pointing towards Wakil as a singer.

Wakil’s passion for music totally depends on his mood but Saddam went through a lot of phases. He says: “During my teens, I was fascinated by rock and metal music. But it diversified through different circumstances and people.” Because of lack of time, Saddam can only listen to music while he works.

Written by the bestselling author of historical and contemporary romance, Judith Macnaught, Someone to Watch over Me is a romantic thriller that keeps you second guessing till the end.

This story begins with a happily married couple, Leigh, a Broadway actress and Logan Manning, a business tycoon, planning a romantic getaway in the mountains. However, the suspense begins to unfold when Leigh survives an accident and wakes up in the hospital, and Logan is declared missing. Not only is she now an emotional wreck, she also has a nameless stalker to add to her list of worries. The further the case unfolds, the more she realises that her husband was not as wonderful as she had made him out to be.

With a new love interest in the picture, Leigh Manning decides to brave everything to find out the truth and clear her own name as a prime suspect. Loaded with witty humour and flippant quips, the story explores the hypocrisies of Broadway and the sharp, clean cut methods of the cops, to bring you to a climax which is nothing short of amazing.

Someone to Watch over Me has all the flavours typical of a Judith Macnaught bestseller. It dabbles into a murder plot that involves some very informative forensic antics and has the right amount of sweet romance that instantly makes you fall in love with the protagonist.

Available as eBooks version online and in any local book seller keeping Macnaught novels, this book is a great read for a chilly night, with some coffee to go with!

The peacock on Luna’s palm is a beautiful burnt orange. Ehsan’s name is woven in its tail feathers. “Sabrina apu did an immaculate job!” Jewellery boxes lay on her dressing table and she sifts through them impatiently in search of her mother’s ruby set. Luna opens a velvety red box and finds the precious jewel, which, despite being really old shines a great deal. She holds it close to her bosom “Finally!”

About eight to ten people bring in dala’s filled with sweets and gifts for the bride and groom. “Just a few hours from now the kazi would tell me and Ehsan to sign the paper, say a prayer, and seal the marriage”- she smiles at the thought of it and shuts the door.

With winter peeping at our windows, the wedding bells have already started resonating in our urban lives. Two of my closest friends are standing ready to become brides and some of my relatives all set to step into their married lives.

This winter is going to be a fusion of chilly mornings, lazy afternoons, misty evenings, melancholic nights, and loads of bright traditional festivities for me.

Winter is a synonymous with festivals and occasions in our city lives. The season is no more a wrapping of a dodgy quilt and grimy surroundings. Rather it brings vividness with the sweetening treat of our traditional “pithas,” the sound of wedding drums, the “travelling” vibe, the barbecue bonanzas and the late night parties. Our winter brings a pleasant ambience leaving the weather calm and steady to attract the “travel-freaks.” We consider this season as one

“My lips are chapped, I need more lipstick!” Luna frantically pours out all the cosmetics from her make-up bag on her bed. The preoccupied bride to-be ignores a knock on her door. Upon hearing a second knock she leaps up and fastens the antique jewellery around her neck with haste. Luna grabs and twists the doorknob - it doesn’t budge. “Adeeb, this isn’t funny, you better open this damn door!” she screams, addressing a cousin.

“I’m coming, Ehsan.” A camera at the corner of the room shows footage of a scraggly young woman flinging herself on alloy doors. “Heads, I tranq her, tails you are going in.” Two attendants at the surveillance unit flip a coin.

The longest natural beach at Cox’s Bazar awaits thousands and thousands of tourists in winter. People love to run the wilderness of the Sundarbans and some prefer soothing their eyes with the sight of the mighty mountains in Chittagong and Bandarbans.

Oh, how can I forget the most mesmerising part of winter? It is now considered as the most suitable season to get married.

The venues are all booked for weddings and parties. People celebrate in laughter and sheer joy. Hail to our winter. It is no more a “gray dusty misty wicked” witch anymore; we welcome the season as a “fairy tale” where wedding stories, travelogues, and celebrations come into being.

Whenever you come across a list of the greatest comic books of all time, Planetary is usually a feature despite knowing of its name and having gone through it as a pre-teen, the time was right to dive back into this classic and see if it really lives up to the hype.

The story of Planetary is shaped on a very simple premise. That the most famous and iconic elements of 20th century pop culture actually exist and it’s up to the story’s four heroes to unearth them. It’s a proper celebration and tribute to the pop culture legends of the 20th century such as James Bond, Tarzan and your staple DC and Marvel characters.

The true beauty of Planetary lies in how each new discovery weaves a new story and all of them find a way to be

beautifully inter connected, it makes for a fascinating read when you manage to immerse yourself in a tale with Sherlock, Frankenstein and Dracula mixed with elements from Godzilla and famous Sci-Fi movies without it feeling forced.

The artwork is out of this world! The way John Cassaday refrains from going overboard and weaves a simple but beautiful universe which feels organic and lets the reader in is what makes the artwork a true masterpiece; Warren Ellis deserves a lot of credit for his imagination; it’s hard to imagine any other artist would be able to pull it off with such aplomb.

All in all, Planetary is a true hall of fame comic book and an absolute must-read.

tuBa ColossusThe Tuba, which is Latin for trumpet or horn, is the largest and lowest-pitched brass instrument. It was invented by Wilhelm Friedrich Wieprecht, making its first appearance in mid 19th century, it became one of the newest instruments in the modern orchestra and concert band. It is generally constructed of brass, which is then unfinished, lacquered or electro-plated with nickel, gold or silver. The sound is produced by vibrating or “buzzing” the lips into a large cupped mouthpiece. The lowest pitched tubas are the contrabass tubas, pitched in C or B-flat, even smaller are the bass tubas, pitched in F or E-flat. Larger sub-contrabass tubas exist, but are extremely rare.

It is the principal bass instrument in concert and military bands, and generally these ensembles tend to have more.

Marching bands, drum and bugle corps, and many jazz bands are also known to use tubas. It purposes as the bass for the brass section, as well as reinforcing other bass instruments, and as a solo instrument.

Jazz has been incorporating the tuba since its earliest years, bands often used a double bass for indoor performances and a tuba for outdoor playing. In this context, the tuba was sometimes called “brass bass,” as opposed to the double bass, which was called “string bass.” Modern jazz features tubas in the traditional bass role, though occasionally tubas take solos as well. Concertos have been written for the tuba by many renowned composers, including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Gregson, Alexander Arutiunian, and James Barnes. Wasef mustafa

sPotLiGHtnot your tyPiCal roCk BandThis week our light shines on a band that has a rather uncommon way of showing their passion towards music. Alternation is an alternative rock band, which has been in the music scene since 2004, covering genres like classical rock to new age. Their band consists of vocalist Towhidul Islam Khan, guitarists Arifeen Mahmood Khan and Kazi Shahriar Ahmed aka Ros, their bassist Azfar Rahman, and drummer Quazi Zulyadain Islam.

Zulyadain has been in the music scene for a long time, particularly because he is also the drummer for Circus Police. He was recruited as a replacement for their former drummer Hasibul Islam Shaibal, who had to leave due to personal reasons. After jamming together for some time with the fresh recruit, the new line-up synced well and was made permanent.

So far they have released three singles;

their debut single “Shamrachorajjo” is from the album named Mixed Tape. Their second track “CrypTool” was released under the album labelled “Ashor” and their third track “New Gun” was released under the album labelled “Play It Now.”

Their debut album is being recorded and still a work in progress. Azfar says: “We will release our album sometime in the middle of next year.” So far they have performed some live shows and radio gigs in and out of town.

Currently they are on a hiatus and choose to stay that way till they are done with their recording sessions. If you want to catch a glimpse of these oddball musicians, follow their Facebook page www.facebook.com/alternationed or log on to www.reverbnation.com/alternationed, to listen to their tracks.

You’ve probably seen the Harold Ramis classic “Groundhog Day” already. But this film is worth seeing again (and again and again, forever).

Groundhog Day is one of those rare gems that get better after each viewing. Many, critics find it to be an enjoyable little screwball comedy upon the first viewing, the second viewing opens up more serious “what if” type questions, and by the time you’ve completed your third viewing, you realise this is a film of existential and religious weight that could rival anything Ingmar Bergman has ever done. Don’t let Bill Murray’s face fool you.

Phil (Bill Murray) wakes up in his hotel room in a small town on the day of the groundhog where he is covering a news story. It is just another dreary February winter day, and Phil is bored with it all. He can’t wait to get out of this little town where nothing interesting could ever happen.

Weather emergencies happen, and Phil is stuck for the night. Cursing his fate he goes to bed. Another day in this dump, what could be worse? He wakes up the “next” morning in the same day. It’s Groundhog Day again. Everything around him is the same, except he remembers it all from before. And so begins Phil’s mental and spiritual journey in dealing with waking up in the exact same morning that seems to be recur eternally no matter what he does. Magnum opuses have been written analysing this film, and one little review doesn’t have the scope of touching on all the tantalising philosophical questions raised in Groundhog Day. But maybe it could make you go back to it. It’s worth it.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear is the smart wrist piece hoping to take on the Sony SmartWatch 2 and the Pebble. In the past, some have seen Samsung’s design as plasticky and cheap, the Samsung Galaxy Gear is not. With an aluminium face and a rubber wrist-strap, it feels much more premium than the Pebble. It’s not small, with a 1.63 inch screen, 11.1mm thickness and a width of 36.8mm, some would call it chunky, but we don’t mind that in a watch. It’s not dull either; you can choose from your classic black, beige or grey, and for those who like more colour, there’s orange, green, and yellow.Unlike the Pebble and the Sony smart watch, the Galaxy Gear isn’t water proof but splash proof. It’ll survive the shower

Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. - #TeamPW”

Walker was a highly sought-after lead man in action and indie dramas. He appeared as LAPD detective and later FBI officer Brian O’Conner in the very successful “Fast and the Furious” franchise. His other credits include “Varsity Blues,” “Flags of Our Fathers,” and “Takers.” Among his upcoming features awaiting release are Relativity Media’s “Brick Mansions” and “Vehicle 19.” “Hours,” a drama set in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, is due

out on December 13 from Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films.

Most recently, Walker was involved in the production of the seventh installment of the “Fast and Furious.” The street racing franchise is Universal’s most valuable active film franchise. Walker’s death will undoubtedly leave a significant void in the film now in production and in subsequent installments. tahsiN momiN

Last year on New Years, I was prancing about in my gorgeous dress and heels, about to set out for a party. My heels got caught in my dress and I ended up ripping the corners. It was so embarrassing to be the only one at the party wearing a dress with tattered sides.

My girlfriend wanted me to get my ear pierced and I didn’t want to. She accused me of being a sissy. Just to prove to her that I’m manly, we went to the salon, I ended up fainting after seeing the piercing gun.

I was about to spray some perfume on myself, but I ended up spraying it right into my eyes.

I went to class with fever and a runny nose; I sat at the far end so that the teacher won’t quiz me. I sneezed loudly and my snot landed on the shoulder of my classmate who was sitting right in front of me.

Sports maniacs, these come in all sizes. Tall, petite, lanky, and swanky. Talk about missing a sports practice, this bunch will raise hell as loud as a packed Pakistani stadium at Afridi’s six!

Nerds

If you wear glasses, if your favourite leisure pastime is to study, you spend your free periods at the library, you have your quiz preps done a week ahead and you still sweat at the thought of a 99% instead of a 100%, you run the risk of being one.

I’VE GAINED 10KG IN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS and my girlfriend has been complaining about it. She’s been telling me to go for a walk in the morning with her. She’s being a health nut about me, and if I show signs of laziness, she threatens to break things off with me. She fails to understand that 6am is an ungodly hour to go for a walk and in winter, it’s an absolute no-no. How do I make it up to her?

I HATE HOW MY BOYFRIEND INSISTS ON TALKING ALL NIGHT. I appreciate the attention but I think he needs to reduce the dosage just a little bit. We are both students and we need to get enough sleep to catch morning classes. I need to get a good night’s sleep in order to get straight A’s and continue with this relationship, without my guy landing on my last nerve. How do I juggle both?
