The festive spirit of Christmas was experienced among the staff and students of The Choice Middle School during the class teachers’ time, starting from first week of December itself.

The Christmas celebration took off in all grandeur in the first week of December which continued from 21 December 2020, soon after the Periodic test, with the children participating in the various class activities that had been organized for them, like, making of Christmas & New Year Greeting cards, attractive paper decors and snowflakes & other decorative pieces for the Christmas; The children also baked cookies, cakes and other mouthwatering delicacies for their beloved Santa in the live Cookery Show that was called ‘Cook for Santa’.

The celebration that continued on 22 December 2020 had the individual classes of the Middle School section celebrating Christmas with the children staging colourful programmes like singing carols, dancing, enacting skits and exhibiting their talent.

The bedecked Christmas tree was the center of attraction in the homes of the children. The children also spoke about the true meaning of Christmas and the relevance of the ornaments that are usually hung on the Christmas trees like the shiny star, the silver bell, the red and white candy, the wreath, the candle and the Santa. The message of caring, sharing and spreading goodness around was the message was conveyed to the children by Mr. Ajith Jacob, the Principal of the School.

Puppet Show by Janaki Biju - Molly’s Christmas Candy Cane

Candy Cane is a Christmas decoration which is used by all. Nevertheless no one comprehends the story behind it. In this puppet show Molly and her grandpa explains the story behind the candy canes. There was this candy maker who wanted to honor the birth of Jesus with a very special type of candy. He shaped the candy into a “J” to symbolize the name of Jesus. White stripes stand for purity and red stripes stand for the blood that Jesus gave when he died for our sins. Grandpa added that the candy canes show us the true meaning of Christmas.

When the Class Teacher’s Time was introduced as a fun-packed time for the children as a morning startup for the Middle schoolers, it opened the portals of creativity and exploration in various arenas of fun-filled activities for them. One such activity which deserves special mention was the experiment on Monaco biscuits which proved that they could just be eaten with a difference and not stay anymore as an ordinary, crunchy, salty biscuit in the wraps. Thus the students of Grade V gathered together with Monaco biscuits, ketch up, boiled eggs cut into round slices, mayonnaise, sev, shredded cheese, small pieces of tomato and veggies according to their preferences to create miracles on biscuits slathered with savory creamy sauce. They turned into wonderful bakers unleashing their aesthetic skill in making palatable, yummy, healthy biscuit sandwiches or tasty snacks which indeed turned into a’ Biscuit Treat’ for Grade 5 children and a family favourite for brunch or evening snack.

Relating the past with the present and integrating them into the daily learning lessons for a perfect unison of the two to make it interesting and unique, a group of students of Grade V made a presentation with the concept of ‘Research Based Learning’ on ‘The History of Poland. The students revisited the history of Poland and explored the geography, culture and tradition, important monuments and personalities in the history who hailed from Poland which was an invigorating session and displayed a kaleidoscopic view of Poland in its totality. They presented their findings with the entire batch of Grade 5 during the class teachers time.

Students of grade 8A gave an insight into the life of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi:Maharani Regent of Travancore through a skit. The assembly started out with a girl named Rishika who was home alone when Suddenly she hears a knock. When she opens the door, she finds Rihan the ghost. He was the only one to live long enough to witness all of Kerala’s history. Rihan

gives Rishika his book and Rishika reads the whole book. The book depicts the life of Sethulakshmi Bayi and also covers how historians criticised Sethulakshmi Bayi for her decision. A small dance, about Sethulakshmi Bayi was performed by Niya. Then the students of 8A performed a dance dedicated to all the doctors, nurses and everyone who has helped us through this pandemic.

GRADE 8B

Grade 8B showcased the life of Ghengis Khan: the Great Emperor Of Mongolia. The play began as a guard from Ghengis Khan’s army announces to the villagers that their village will be taken as their future army camp and everyone needs to evacuate the village. Everyone is in shock and this is when a son from a family of three curiously asks his mother who Ghengis Khan is. However the mother and father were in a hurry to leave

the village, they did not answer his question on who the famed Ghengis Khan was. Students then come into the picture as narrators to explain and talk about the life of Ghengis Khan and give an insight on the enchanting country of Mongolia. Towards the end of the play, Ghengis Khan, acted by one of our students, greets the audience. This was followed by a melodious song named Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Gianna.

GRADE 8E

The students of 8 E depicted the life of Nefertiti, the Queen and wife to the Pharaoh Akhenaten of Egypt’s 18th dynasty with a well-played skit. A news reporter introduces us to a world renowned film director Mr.

Jerry Jones and his upcoming project on Queen Nefertiti. The skit takes the audience behind the scenes of the shooting of the film in Egypt. The skit cleverly sketches the life of Nefertiti, right from her birth to King Ay. The skit brings up her blossoming relationship with Prince Akhenaten and their journey in becoming the rulers of Egypt. Along with the witty director Jones, the skit interestingly captures the splendour and affluence of Egypt, under the rulership of the Royal Couple. The skit also brings in the enforcement of the religion, founded by the royals, worshipping the Sun God Aten, and the severe retribution that follows the disobedience of the new

principles. The play moves on to the passing away of King Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti, and the crowning of their son and heir, Tutankhamun.

GRADE 8F

Students of grade 8F conducted an online assembly on the topic Emperor Charlemagne, the king of the Franks who founded the

Holy Roman Empire. The aim was to enlighten our fellow batchmates on one of the most significant kings in French history. The plays saw students learning about king in a French class.

GRADE 8D

Students of grade 8D presented an online assembly on the topic Mansa Musa. They started the assembly with a scene where Jeff Bezos - Founder of Amazon and Mr Bill at the waiting room of a meeting. Mr Jeff picks up a magazine and starts to read it when he notices that the front page headlines of the magazine has Richest Man Mansa Musa written on it which makes Mr Jeff and Mr Bill furious. Mr Jeff asks Alexa, who is the richest person on the Earth? Mansa Musa is the

reply given by Alexa. Mansa Musa, also known as Musa Keita, who is the 10th Sultan of the Mali Empire in Africa is the world’s richest person recorded in history. He lived back in the 14th century. Mansa Musa was a celebrated personality, worshipped by thousands. But he met his end shortly after his return from Mecca in 1337. His son Mansa Maghan was said to take over the throne and continue his father’s legacy. Alexa says that all the information provided by her has made her throat ache and at the ending scene of the skit we see Mr Bill and Mr Jeff leaving for the meeting.

GRADE 8G

Queen Cleopatra of Egypt was the topic presented by grade 8G through a skit. Cleopatra, the queen and also the richest woman in history, had met Caesar under intimate terms by rolling herself up in a carpet and being delivered to his address. But what made Caesar captivated by her weren’t her beauty or wealth, but her cunningness. This ploy had amused him and it was a brilliant strategy.

Cleopatra’s plan was to use Caesar and get back to power. With the help of Caesar, Cleopatra had overthrown her brother and secured her royalty again.

What we can learn from Cleopatra is that - We should work in silence and let success make the noise.

The Choice School witnessed its first ever virtual students’ parliament on 2 dec 2020, presided over by our beloved Jose Thomas sir. 17 students of grade 8 presented themselves as members of the parliament, taking sides as the ruling and opposition parties.

The recent concerns faced by the country like the indo-china border disputes, farmers bills, nep, delhi pollution, effects of corona on education and cyber safety, women’s cricket and its prominence, were thoroughly researched upon and presented through the question hour session.

The students donned the role of ministers of defense, external affairs, education, agriculture, etc…

The heated questions and debates would have put the real parliamentary ministers to shame!!

HAPPINESS IS APPRECIATING THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE!

An awareness campaign on mental health was organised for the students of Grade VII, by Sanjana Elizabeth George, Co-founder, Humans of Kerala (HoK) and alumna of The Choice School. HoK is a social media initiative with sound mental health as one of its objectives and realises that mental health issues need to be addressed head on.

The students thus landed the golden opportunity of engaging themselves in an interactive session with Ms. Fathima Khader, Coach, Yellow Club, on the topic ‘Stress Management’. The students were apprised of the fact that stress was generated when one did not control or supervise one’s thoughts, thereby leading to a state of unwanted unrest and anxiety. They were further attuned to appreciate the simple things in life. The students cherished the session and felt that being a part of it was indeed a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

FUN WITH MATH

Algebra needs written practice. It is a proven fact. But giving wings to the hens choosing the appropriate identity was a relief from the routine written practice. Reinforcement of the concept was done in a creative manner through this activity.

COMPUTER SCIENCE: CYBER SAFETY AWARENESS

Every year October is observed as Cyber Safety Awareness Month. As part of the Cyber safety Awareness Drive, the students of grades 5 to 8 were asked to prepare for a teach back session on the topic “CYBER SAFETY” during the computer science period.

With students being online due to the current situation, being safe online is very important and for that awareness of the possible threats

play a major role. The talk by the students conveyed a big share of Cyber safety guidelines to their peers in the peer language.

The teachers witnessed an enthusiastic participation from the student presenters. Students dressed up as Hackers, Cyber bullies and gamers for their talk and amused the audience and shed light on almost all aspects of cyber safety guidelines.

BEING RESPONSIBLE…………………………

“CONFIDENCE COMES FROM DISCIPLINE AND TRAINING”

GEOGRAPHY - PHYSICAL LANDFORMS

In geography, the students mapped out some of the wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. This required them to do research on the location of the different reserves and precisely map them out. An art related activity was conducted

where the students made a model on the different methods of soil conservation. The students were thrilled to portray their art skills and loved viewing colourful, intricate models by their classmates.

An individual with a highly developed sense of personal responsibility is more likely to succeed in his life…...

“The price of greatness is responsibility”. To instill a sense of responsibility in children different activities were conducted during enhancement classes in grade 8. The aim of the activities was to demonstrate a sense of responsibility in various aspects of life and to show

dedication and accomplish tasks with full ownership.

Children made beautiful cards and posters and shared their views on the importance of being a responsible human. They explained the various levels of responsibilities one should

have to self, family, society, nation and to the mother earth through their creative works.

Kids who learn self – discipline will be better equipped to face life’s challenges, manage stress and make healthy choices even when they are alone in the decision-making journey and when no one is around them. Valuing this concept, remembering the lines “A disciplined mind leads to happiness” the enhancement curriculum for December was designed as ‘Self Discipline’ in middle school.

a Line from the “Home” position to the “Tower” position and back to the “Home” position through an interaction as fast as possible, earning points along the way, thereby paving his way into the final round and securing the First Position in the competition.

It was a fabulous accomplishment when Joshua Philip Thomas from Grade 5G, participated in the French Word Power exam and qualified for the national level. He fetched an International Certificate in French Language, French Word Power, certified by the Quebec Government Office (Bureau du Quebec, Mumbai & Alliance Française Rouen, France). The exam was conducted at two levels - State and National level.

Just because a child is well-behaved, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has self-discipline. Self-disciplined kids can choose to forgo immediate gratification. They can make good choices regardless of how they feel.

Kids were taken through various concepts like managing responsibilities, understanding problems & solving techniques, gaining better impulsive control, learning to gain patience, concepts of being grateful & polite etc.… to impart the importance of discipline.

Stories, games and activities like writing thought diary, designing decision making wheel, activities to develop creative thinking and think out of the box were done in the classes. Children enthusiastically participated and explained their views and concepts regarding the same.
