The system – an overview

Rhepanol® fk – advantages

Tried and tested long-term reliability, over50 years of experience with polyisobutylene

The oldest synthetic roofing membrane

made in Germany

With a unique self-sealing edge for reliable

and fast sealing of seamsFleece backing with extremely high tensile

strength

Made of polyisobutylene (PIB), therefore

compatible with bitumen

One roofing membrane for all applicationmethods

The only roofing membrane to be applied

with the Gripfix systemResistant to UV-radiation

Flexible at temperatures as low as – 60 °CFree of plasticizers

The self-sealing edge system

The pre-fabricated self-sealing edge system is

different from conventional adhesive bonding.

Sealing of the seams is carried out by firmly joining homogenous materials. Immediately

after the self-sealing edge has been pressed tothe connecting membrane the seam is already

waterproof. Owing to the integrated self-

sealing edge, seams can be sealed withoutopen flame, hot air, solvent welding or addi-

tional adhesives, making application more

efficient and almost independent of weather

conditions.

The roofing membrane with a strong

character

Industrially pre-fabricated  self-sealing edge for reliable and

 fast sealing of  seams.

 It only takesthree steps:

 Rhepanol fkwith self-sealing

edge system.

... roll out

... roll on the edge ... sealed! ... clean the seam, pull off the protective strip

One,

two,

three,

sealed!

Application is incredibly easy and safe: Roll

out Rhepanol fk, clean the seam area, pull off

the protective strip and press down the edge –sealed! The same goes for all preformed details,

which are also equipped with the unique self-

sealing edge system.

Official seal of approval for Rhepanol fk

Rhepanol fk is known as “the long-term reliable

roofing membrane”. There are many reasons forthat: FDT does not focus on short-term profit,

but on high-quality and durable products. Therefore we have established stringent quality

control requirements that eliminate sources of

error. This in-house quality assurance system for

the whole company has been certified according

to DIN EN ISO 9001, the world’s most strictquality standard, and is

constantly monitored by

TÜV CERT. We pay the

same attention to materials

control carried out during

production as to the qualityassurance measures and the highly mechanized

production.

Control measures (amongst others):

No blisters or cracks

Thickness, width

Weight per square metre

Maximum tensile force, elongation atmaximum tensile force

Dimensional stability after storage at + 80 °C

Bending at low temperatures

In addition, Rhepanol fk is permanently moni-tored by an officially approved testing institute.

In 1980 we signed a quality control agreement

with the State Material Testing Institute

Darmstadt, plastics department. The regular

controls carried out by the Material TestingInstitute not only include production, but also

external stores and building sites. The quality

control of an independent testing institute

provides additional security when waterproofing

flat roofs with Rhepanol fk.

Safety and functional efficiency,

supporting construction

Safety and functional efficiency

With mechanical fastening the roof sealing

is separated from the lower layers and com-

ponents across the complete area. Movements

of these layers and components can thereforenot pass on stresses to the sealing, which is

significant for the prevention of damage,

especially on lightweight roofs. The roofing

membrane Rhepanol fk is rolled onto mechani-

cally fastened Gripfix strips, providing optimalwind load distribution and securing the

membrane permanently to the roof.

The membrane seams run perpendicular to theGripfix strips and thus are not affected by wind

uplift forces.

The integrated highly tear-resistant synthetic

fleece of Rhepanol fk allows diffusion of anyretained moisture.

The supporting deck structure has to meet

the requirements with regard to load-bearingcapacity, deflection, anchorage and drainage.

Substrates for application must be free

of open cracks, concrete, rough and sharpprojections.

Joints have to be formed according to

constructional requirements, as their width

or movement may impede the functional

efficiency of the roof seal.

Clean, dry and even roof surfaces.

If Rhepanol fk is directly laid on concrete

decks/screed allow the concrete/screed to setfor at least 28 days.

The effect of air escaping from the building

at the roof perimeter and at roof penetra-

tions must be prevented. Therefore theseareas have to be made airtight. In the case

of profiled steel decking, seal around all

openings and perimeters.

For compatibility reasons, timber boardcladding, chipboards and similar may be

treated only with salt-based wood preserva-

tives. Oil or solvent based impregnation

agents must not be used.

National standards and regulations must be

observed.

The mechanical

 fastening of  Rhepanol fk with

Gripfix system

ensures secure, fast and effective

laying.

Rhepanol fk is compatible with bitumen and

can be applied without additional separation

layers directly on to old bituminous sheets.

The integrated synthetic fleece protects themembrane against movement originating

from the substrate.

Vapour control layer,

thermal insulation layer

For non air-conditioned rooms (e.g. living

rooms and offices or similar rooms withoutsuspended ceiling): vapour barrier fk

(ethylene).

In the case of lightweight concrete support-

ing decks with correctly calculated thermalinsulation, you may leave out a vapour

control layer, if the room temperature stays

below 20 °C and the relative air humidity

inside the room will not exceed 65 %. In

case of doubt, we recommend a calculationof the building physics in order to identify the

diffusion characteristics of the roof build-up.

With lightweight steel deckings, we also

recommend in principle the installation of aseparate vapour control layer, which should

be formed as an air barrier according to the

provisions of the Thermal Insulation

Regulation.

The vapour barrier fk is applied with a seamoverlap of 10 cm, with the seams being

sealed with connection or seam tape. The

vapour barrier must be taken up and flashed

at connections and cappings; at roof pene-trations it must be flashed.

For rooms with high air condition loads:

In case of air-conditioned rooms and rooms

with high air condition loads, as well as

high pressure rooms, there should be nomechanical fastening through the vapour

barrier. In these cases please consult our

experts to identify the right layer build-up

and application method.

National standards and regulations must be

observed.

Vapour control layer

In the case of non-ventilated roofs, we rec-

ommend the following vapour control layers:

Thermal insulation layer

When designing the thermal insulation layer on

steel profile supporting decks, attention mustbe given to load bearing capacity.

As materials for thermal insulation layers we

recommend:

For roof slopes up to 20°: large-sized

insulation boards made of quality assured

rigid polyurethene or rigid polystyrene foam

with rebated edge, size 1.20 x 1.20 m or1.20 x 1.00 m.

On top of the insulation boards, for fire

protection reasons, the application of a fire

protection layer – a specially coated wovenglass cloth – will be necessary.

Compressed mineral fibre insulation may

also be used.

Folding insulation boards or rigid poly-styrene foam boards with backing. For

fire protection reasons, bituminous sheets

with an integrated glass fleece or fabric

≥ 60 g/m2 may be necessary as a lining.

Use linings with a PE foil or fleece facing.

Large-sized non-flammable mineral fibreboards. Because of better suitability for

mechanical fastening we recommend

boards with a greater resistance to pointloads (min. 500 N at 5 mm deformation)

and a higher compression strength (com-

pressive strain at 10 % compression set

min. 0.06 N/mm2).

Small-sized insulation boards can be used,

provided they can be properly fastened.

National standards and regulations must be

observed.

®

fk, mechanically fastened withGripfix system

Insulation boards or board sections that are notsufficiently fixed with Gripfix must be secured

in a stable position with additional fasteners

(at least 2 fasteners/m2) prior to applying theroofing membrane.

Insulation materials that are not dimension-

ally stable and which buckle or bulge must

not be installed. Generally insulation boards

must be laid brick-bond pattern.

Rhepanol® fk, mechanically fastened withGripfix system

The Gripfix strips are placed according tothe wind uplift calculation and mechanically

fastened. The Gripfix strip spacing is variable

depending on the wind load requirements.

The roofing membrane Rhepanol fk is thenloosely laid with a seam overlap of 5°

perpendicular to the Gripfix strips. The grip

is achieved by thoroughly rolling the roofing

membrane Rhepanol fk to the Gripfix strip.

The membrane width is always 1.05 m.Depending on the substrate a variety of

different fasteners may be used.

Rhepanol® fkmechanically fastened with Gripfix system Application techniques

I With the Gripfix system you must use only

the specially marked Rhepanol fk roofing

membranes.

I The max. wind force (including safety

factor 1.5) per m Gripfix strip is 1.5 kN.

The design load is max. 0.5 kN/fastener.

Instructions of the fastener manufacturer mustbe observed.

At building heights over 20 m and in special

cases (e.g. airplane hangars, buildings near the

coast, extreme exposure) each characteristic ofthe project location and special conditions must

be taken into account.

On request, computer-based project specific cal-

culations of the necessary amount of fastenersand Gripfix strip spacing are carried out, which

may result in lesser amounts of fasteners than

indicated in the table, provided the building has

a favourable geometry.

Rhepanol fk can be mechanically fastened on

roofs with any slope.

At slopes exceeding 20°, application should beagreed with our experts.

On profiled steel deckings and timber board

cladding the Gripfix strips must be arranged per-

pendicularly to the corrugations or boards toachieve the most regular wind load distribution

possible into the supporting deck.

At all flashings and cappings, roof lights etc.

the build-up must be specially secured bycircumferential rows of fasteners or Gripfix strips

(min. 4 fasteners/m).

Note:

I Max. spacing of Gripfix strips see table above.

I Fastening spacing on the Gripfix strip min.

15 cm, max. 60 cm.

I Fastener spacing on the same corrugation at

profiled steel deckings must not be less than

20 cm.

I Use only fasteners with washers of max. 5 cmwidth.

Flashings and cappings

All flashings and cappings are carried out with

Rhepanol fk flashing strips.

If the connecting membrane is bonded, then atflashing heights over 20 cm a full-size adhesive

bond is necessary. Valley areas are left unbonded

at a width of 20 cm to allow movement com-pensation. If the connecting membrane is

mechanically fastened with Gripfix strips the fol-

lowing spacing must be observed (s. also sketch):

– Distance of the first Gripfix strip from the

internal corner of the parapet max. 10 cm– Spacing between the Gripfix strips or distance

between Gripfix strip and upper capping max.

50 cm.

With wall flashings, the upper edge of theRhepanol fk roofing membrane is pressed to

the substrate with rigid wall connection profiles

such as “Classic” and additionally secured with

sealant A or S. The two-part FDT roof edgetrims ensure flexible, yet windproof capping of

the roof perimeter. Forming of flashings and

cappings is identical for all application methods.

You will find details on this topic in the drawings

“Technical details”.

Additional requirements for roofrefurbishment:

I In the case of uneven substrates, protection

layers are necessary. Rigid polystyrene foam

insulation boards or sheets can be recom-

mended.

I The strength of the supporting deck is

crucial for the anchoring of the fastening

elements. If there is doubt about the

strength, e.g. of old pumice stone orlightweight concrete panels, pullout tests

will be necessary to define the amount offasteners depending on the object.

Safety and functional efficiency

Because of loose laying, the roof covering is

separated from the other layers of the build-upacross the complete area. Movements andcracks in the supporting construction are not

transferred into the roof covering.

The ballast ensures the membrane remains

secure against wind uplift forces.

Rhepanol fk is compatible with bitumen and can

be applied without additional separation layers

directly on old bituminous sheets.

The integrated, highly tear-resistant synthetic

fleece of Rhepanol fk allows diffusion, ensuring reliable vapour pressure compensation.

Furthermore the fleece backing provides

protection against stresses originating fromthe substrate.

Application instructions

Supporting construction

I The supporting deck structure has to meet

the requirements with regard to load-bearing

capacity, deflection, anchorage and drainage.

I Clean, dry and even roof surfaces.

I If Rhepanol fk is directly laid on concrete

decks/screed allow the concrete/screed to

set for at least 28 days.

I Substrates for application must be free of

open cracks, rough concrete, sharp edges

and stones.

I Joints have to be formed according to

constructional requirements, as their width

or movement may impede the functionalefficiency of the roof sealing.

Safety and functional efficiency,

supporting construction,vapour control layer

I The roof slope should not exceed 3° to prevent

the ballast slipping off.

I An intrusion of air underneath the roofcovering at the roof perimeter and at roofpenetrations must be prevented. Therefore

these areas have to be made windtight.

I For compatibility reasons, timber board clad-

ding, chipboards and similar may be treatedonly with salt-based wood preservatives. Oil

or solvent based impregnation agents must

not be used.

I National standards and regulations must beobserved.

Vapour control layer

In the case of non-ventilated roofs, werecommend the following vapour control layers:

I For non air-conditioned rooms (e.g. living

rooms and offices or similar rooms without

suspended ceiling): vapour barrier fk (poly-ethylene) with µ x s = 120 m.

In the case of lightweight concrete supporting

decks with correctly calculated thermal insulation,

you may leave out a vapour control layer, if theroom temperature stays below 20 °C and the

relative air humidity inside the room will not

exceed 65 %.

The vapour barrier fk can be laid with differentoverlap: either 10 cm if sealing the seams with

connection or seam tape, or 20 cm loose overlap

(without seam connection in the area).

Preconditions:

– seamless solid deck and– dimensionally stable insulation material,

µ larger than 40, e.g. polystyrene,

– standard room air conditions.

fk, loosely laid,ballast

I For rooms with high air condition loads (e.g.

swimming pools, air-conditioned rooms):

– aluminium compound foils,

– vapour control membrane with metal tapereinforcement, e.g. AL + V 60 S 4.

I National standards and regulations must be

observed.

Thermal insulation layer

You must bear in mind tread-fastness when

designing the thermal insulation layer on steel

profile supporting decks. Quality assured rigid

polystyrene foam boards with rebated edgeand a length of max. 1.25 m are especially

suitable materials for thermal insulation layers.

With roof areas for walking on, insulation

materials with higher compression strength,e.g. rigid polystyrene foam, must be used in

accordance with the expected loads.

Insulation materials that are not dimensionally

stable and which buckle or bulge must not beinstalled.

The insulation elements must be laid with

pressed joints in bond.

National standards and regulations must be

observed.

Rhepanol fk, loosely laid

Rhepanol fk roofing membrane is loosely laid

with a seam overlap of 5 cm. The membrane

seams are quickly sealed with the prefabricated

self-sealing edge almost independent from

weather conditions. At all flashings and cap-pings, built-in details etc. you will need linear

perimeter fixing with at least 4 fastening

elements/m.

Ballast

Immediately apply ballast on loosely laid

roofing membranes to secure its positionagainst wind uplift.

Suitable materials are:

I bulk gravel layers, min. 5 cm thick, washed

natural uncrushed stones, fraction 16/32.

I paving slabs in a fine gravel bed on a

protection layer.

If appropriate gravel is not available or thegravel is applied pneumatically, then, as under

paving slabs, you will need an additional pro-tection layer (e.g. synthetic fleece or protection

sheet TS fk). Under screed you will have

to apply the protection sheet TS fk.

PE layers and coarse rubber protective sheets

must have an underlying synthetic fleece layer.

For ballast, the provisions of national wind load

standards must be observed.

At building heights over 20 m and for roofs

with high wind exposure (e.g. tower-style,

detached buildings, airplane hangars and

buildings near the coast) it is necessary to

define appropriate object-related measuresfor membrane position stability.

Flashings and cappings,

roof refurbishment,layer build-ups

Flashings and cappings

All flashings and cappings are carried out

with Rhepanol fk flashing strips. With flashingheights of over 20 cm, full-size adhesivebonding of the covering at the upstand is

necessary. Valley areas are left unbonded at a

width of 20 cm to allow movement compen-

sation. The upper edge of the Rhepanol fk

roofing membrane is pressed to the substratewith rigid wall connection profiles such as

“Classic” and additionally secured with sealant

A or S. The two-part FDT roof edge trims

ensure flexible, yet windproof capping of theroof perimeter.

The forming of flashings and cappings is iden-tical for all application methods. You will find

details on this topic in the drawings “Technicaldetails”.

Additional requirements for roof

refurbishment:

I Thoroughly sweep the roof area. Removeany blisters, projections and coarse rough-

ness.

I On rough substrates (such as pressed gravel),

a protection layer is necessary. We recom-mend polystyrene insulation boards, which

provide additional insulation at the same

time.

I Temporary storage of gravel must not exceedthe maximum load of the supporting deck.

I Soiled gravel must be cleaned (e.g. by

sieving). Otherwise, appropriate protection

layers such as synthetic fleece 300 g/m2

must be applied.

Safety and functional efficiency

Bonding Rhepanol fk in stripes ensures maximum

possible mobility of the roofing membrane. Theintegrated, highly tear-resistant synthetic fleece

of Rhepanol fk allows diffusion, thus ensuring

reliable vapour pressure compensation and

secure bonding to the substrate. Rhepanol fk iscompatible with bitumen and can be bonded

without additional separation layers, directly to

old bituminous sheets. The integrated synthetic

fleece protects the membrane against stresses

originating from the substrate.

Application instructions

Supporting construction

I The supporting deck structure has to meet

the technical requirements, especially for load-

bearing capacity, deflection, anchorage and

drainage.

I Substrates for application must be free of open

cracks, rough concrete and sharp projections.

I Joints have to be formed according toconstructional requirements, as their width

or movement may impede the functional

efficiency of the roof sealing.

I An intrusion of air underneath the roofcovering at the roof perimeter and at roof

penetrations must be prevented. Therefore

these areas have to be made windtight.

I Clean, dry and even roof surfaces.

I If Rhepanol fk is directly laid on concrete

decks/screed allow the concrete/screed to

set for at least 28 days.

I The necessity for pre-coating to providereliable adhesion and dust bonding depends

on the substrate conditions.

– Lightweight concrete panels must always

be pre-coated, except when using Rhepanoladhesive 90.

I – It is not necessary to pre-coat coated profiled

steel deckings, except when welding onbituminous sheets (only as bonding agent).

I – National standards and regulations must be

observed.

Vapour control layer

As vapour control layers, in the case of non-

ventilated roofs, we recommend:

I For non air-conditioned rooms (e.g. living

rooms and offices or similar rooms without

suspended ceiling): Vapour control membrane.

In the case of lightweight concrete supporting

decks with correctly calculated thermal insula-tion, you may leave out a vapour control layer,

if the room temperature stays below 20 °C

und the relative air humidity inside the room

will not exceed 65 %.

I For rooms with high air condition loads

(e.g. swimming pools, air-conditioned rooms):

Vapour control membrane with metal tape,

glass fleece or woven glass cloth reinforce-

ment.

In case of doubt, we recommend a calculation

of the building physics in order to identify the

diffusion characteristics of the roof build-up.

Rhepanol® fkbonded fixing Application techniques

Vapour control layer,

thermal insulation layer

With lightweight steel deckings, we also recom-

mend in principle the installation of a separate

vapour control layer, which should be formed as

an air barrier according to the provisions of theThermal Insulation Regulation.

I The vapour barrier must be taken up and

flashed at connections and cappings, at roofpenetrations it must be flashed.

I National standards and regulations must be

observed.

Note:

For bonding the insulation layer with adhesive U,

use vapour control membranes without PEbacking or talcum coating.

Thermal insulation layer

The thermal insulation layer is to be designed in

accordance with the thermal protection require-ments.

As materials for thermal insulation layers we

recommend:

I Folding insulation boards or rigid polystyrenefoam boards with backing.

For fire protection reasons, bituminous sheetswith an integrated glass fleece or fabric

≥ 60 g/m2 may be necessary as a lining.

I Mineral fibre boards or sheets

With bonded application using mineral fibre

insulation material, the type of insulation

material and the adhesive/amount of ad-hesive needed is to be defined depending

on the object.

As a lining, use bituminous sheets without PEbacking.

Generally insulation boards must be laid brick-

bond pattern. Insulation materials that are

not dimensionally stable and which buckle orbulge, or insulation elements with insufficient

lining stability must not be installed.

Bonding of the thermal insulation layer ispreferably done with adhesive U, a one-com-ponent polyurethane adhesive.

For roof slopes exceeding 7°, additional sup-

porting measures are necessary to prevent the

materials slipping off while the adhesive iscuring.

For further information on the adhesive and its

application see data sheet adhesive U.

I National standards and regulations must be

observed.

With the Rhepanol-Adhesive 90 speciallydesigned for Rhepanol fk, the roofing mem-

brane is securely bonded to the substrate. The adhesive is applied in stripes with at least

8 stripes/m.

Adhesive consumption depends on the place

and height of the building and on the bonding

substrate.

With building heights over 20 m and in the

case of roofs with high wind exposure (e.g.

tower-style, detached buildings, airplane

needed or appropriate object-related measures

for membrane position stability.

For roof slopes exceeding 15°, additionalmechanical fastening may be necessary to

prevent the roofing membrane slipping off

Rhepanol® fkbonded fixing Application techniques

Linear perimeter fixing,

flashings and cappings,roof refurbishment

Linear perimeter fixing

A linear perimeter fixing at flashings and

cappings is necessary with supporting decksmade of galvanized profiled steel.

I In general, with bonded roof build-ups with

mineral fibre insulation materials, independ-

ent from the supporting deck.

The perimeter fixing of the roof build-up,

including the roofing membrane, is achieved

in each instance with at least 4 fixings/m in

line.

Flashings and cappings

All flashings and cappings are carried out with

Rhepanol fk flashing strips. With flashing heightsof over 20 cm, full-size adhesive bonding of the

covering at the upstand is necessary. Valley areas

are left unbonded at a width of 20 cm to allow

movement compensation. The upper edge of

the Rhepanol fk roofing membrane is pressed tothe substrate with rigid wall connection profiles

such as “Classic” and additionally secured with

sealant A or S. The two-part FDT roof edge

trims ensure flexible, yet windproof capping of

the roof perimeter. Forming of flashings andcappings is identical for all application methods.

For drawing example see “Technical details”.

Additional requirements for roof

refurbishment:

I Before overlaying with Rhepanol fk

the adhesion between the old roofing layers,

as well as to the supporting deck must becompletely secure. Otherwise mechanical

fastening will be necessary.

I With old roofs bonded with cold bituminous

adhesive a mechanical fastening of the old

roof is obligatory due to the plastic dimen-sional dynamics of the cold bituminous

adhesive.

I The substrate must be suitable for bonding, free from chippings and thoroughly cleaned.

differences of the substrate

I Simple application method which needs no

power supply

I No risk of burning or fire

Substrate

The bonding areas have to be solid, even, clean,

dry and free of grease and oil.

Adhesive consumption

For building heights up to 20 m the consump-

tion and the amount of necessary adhesive

stripes are indicated on page 40 in the table

“Adhesive U consumption for thermal insula-tion”.

For detailed application instructions see the

installation instructions Rhepanol fk and the

containers.

Application method

I With the Universal application trolley and

adapter for adhesive U (6.5 kg containers) foreven substrates.

I Manual application should be limited to roof

areas that cannot be worked on with the appli-cation trolley, such as small areas between roof

lights.

Sloping areas

At roof slopes over 7°:

I Preferably, the adhesive should be applied in

direction of the slope.
