TM BCITO Employers Survey Topline: September Quarter 2012 TM Notes: Totals may not add to 100% due to rounding Statistical testing (two tailed t-test, 95% confidence) has been conducted to compare each reporting region to the New Zealand average. Figures in red indicate where the result for that region is significantly higher than the New Zealand average. Figures in blue indicate where the result for that region is significantly lower than the New Zealand average. Scale questions are presented here in the form of average scores for ease of interpretation. Detailed data is available on request. 2 TM 3 4 TA Support Suggestions All apprentices should go back to block courses, I've gone to the opposition with two apprentices because they run block courses. Communicate better with employer and apprentice. Didn't see the guy as often as we thought quite often we had to ring up to see if he was coming - didn't turn up sometimes, but he had a lot to deal with. More on site visits for the guys. My guys needed to get a formal qualification and relationship with BCITO wasn't strong - had three guys go through. On overall scheme Govt. trying to have apprentices run by employer, needs to be block courses for theory which is lacking. Restricted by budget for what level of service is offered to apprentices, we don't get to see BCITO often enough. Professionalism Suggestions More Consistency. Need to do 3 week block courses would solve alot of the problems, we have very poor tradesmen now compared to earlier times. Let down in the knowledge of classroom side of things. Resource Suggestions Apprentices need to do a block course or a day course to have time with peers not just being on site need more time with peers to figure out they are on the right track. Block courses set up for learning outside of work place Govt. may look as retrograde step, other trades do it - need class time. Bring the books of learning to meet our new building codes so guys know what they have been taught is going to be used on site. Need to go to Polytech to be trained. Assessment Suggestions A day course would help galvanize a finished date. Instead of night courses we need to have block course as part of their training. More on site people. Signed my own guys off I do the assessing BCITo come in at end, they need more contact with guys and push them along better communication. TA Understanding Suggestions Contact employers with more discussion on how to manage these guys. Improvement would come from me to improve - I didn't make any effort. Suggestions for Improvement TM 5 3x day Polytech course. Block courses night school for apprentice training. Can't remember but went away for the odd course, one was first aid. Theory units at Wintic. Trade evenings ie last one was working at heights. Went to Whitianga for block course. TM 6 7 Why Not? Because it is mailed out and haven't seen it come through. Can't be bothered. Don't have time. Don't receive it and didn't know it existed. Haven't heard of it. Havent received any as we are a Prison & we dont have apprentices, we teach prisoners Skills so that they have a better chance of getting employment once released & not re offending. Haven't seen it. I don't always get it. I don't receive it. Not applicable to my role - I am director of the company (timber frame and truss plant). Not enough time. Not up to date they are behind. Read Trade (Placemakers) I don't get sent BCITO news. Time. Too much to read I get bombarded with lots. Don't think I get it.
