    (4) Tests indicate that repainting with olive-drab paint is neeeS5llry once a year and with blue-drab twice a year.30. REMOVAL OF PAII'IIT.. After repeated paintings, the paint may crack and scale offin places, presenting an unsightly appearance. I f such is the case, remove the old paint with a lime--and.lye solution ( ~ T F 9850for details) or with RE MO VER. paint and varnish. I t is importantthat every trace of lye or other paint re mover be completely rinsedoff, and thaI the equipment be perfeetly dry before repainting isattempted. I t is preferable that the use of lye solutions be limited toiron or steel parts. I f used on wood, the lye solution must not beallowed to remain on the surface for more than a minute before it isthoroughly rinsed off and the surface wiped dry with rags. Crevicesor cracks in wood should be filled with putty and the wood oandpapered before refinishing. T he surfaces thus prepared should bepainted according to directions in paragraph 27.
