The year was 1968, and bell bottoms and tie dye were all the rage. Also in 1968, Hektoen Enteric Agar was introduced as a replacement for SS Agar for enteric pathogen screens. HE Agar may select for most Salmonella and Shigella (high sensitivity), but it also produces many annoying false positives (low specificity).
