NEVER ERECT THESE LONG RANGE ANTENNAS DIRECTLY UNDER POWER LINES.IF YOU MUST ERECT THESE LONG RANGE ANTENNAS NEAR POWERLINES, POWERLINE POLES ORTOWERS, OR BUILDINGS WITH OVERHEAD POWERLINE CONNECTIONS, NEVER PUT THE ANTENNACLOSER THAN TWO TIMES THE ANTENNA HEIGHT FROM THE BASE OF THE POWERLINE, POLE,TOWER OR BUILDINGS. RC–292 80 FT. FROM BASE OF POWERLINE.

NEVER ATTEMPT TO ERECT ANY LONG RANGE ANTENNA WITHOUT A FULL TEAM.BEFORE ERECTING ANY LONG RANGE ANTENNA, INSPECT ALL THE PARTS MAKING UP THEANTENNA KIT. DO NOT ERECT THE ANTENNA IF ANY PARTS ARE MISSING OR DAMAGED.

DO AS MUCH OF THE ASSEMBLY WORK AS POSSIBLE ON THE GROUND.

WHEN ERECTING THE ANTENNA, ALLOW ONLY TEAM PERSONNEL IN THE ERECTlON AREA.

MAKE SURE THAT THE AREA FOR THE ANCHORS IS FIRM. IF THE GROUND IS MARSHY OR SANDY,GET SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR CREW CHIEF OR SUPERVISOR ON HOW TO REINFORCETHE ANCHORS.

WHEN SELECTING LOCATIONS FOR ANCHORS, AVOID TRAVELED AREAS AND ROADS. IF YOU CANNOTAVOID THESE AREAS, GET SPECIFIC lNSTRUCTlONS FROM YOUR SUPERVISOR AS TO WHAT CLEAR–ANCE YOUR GUY WIRES AND ROPES MUST HAVE OVER THE TRAVELED AREAS AND ROAD.

CLEARLY MARK ALL GUY WIRES AND ROPES WITH THE WARNING FLAGS OR SIGNS SUPPLIED BY YOURUNIT. IN AN EMERGENCY, USE STRIPS OF WHITE CLOTH AS WARNING STREAMERS.

IF YOU SUSPECT THAT POWERLINES HAVE MADE ACCIDENTAL CONTACT WITH YOUR ANTENNA, STOPOPERATING, ROPE OFF THE ANTENNA AREA, AND NOTIFY YOUR SUPERIORS.

IF THE WEATHER IN YOUR AREA CAN CAUSE ICE TO FORM ON YOUR LONG RANGE ANTENNA AND ITSGUY WIRES AND ROPES, ADD EXTRA GUYS TO SUPPORT THE SYSTEM. ROPE OFF THE AREA ANDPOST IT WITH WARNING SIGNS LIKE “BEWARE OF FALLING ICE."

DO NOT TRY TO ERECT ANY ANTENNA DURING AN ELECTRICAL STORM.

KEEP A SHARP EYE ON YOUR ANCHORS AND GUYS. CHECK THEM DAILY AND IMMEDIATELYBEFORE AND AFTER BAD WEATHER.

CHAPTER 1

I N T R O D U C T I O N

1-1. Scopea. This manual describes Antenna Equipment

RC-292 (fig. 1-1) and provides instructions forinstallation, operation, and maintenance. It in-cludes instructions for operation under usual andunusual conditions, cleaning, and inspection of theequipment, and replacement of parts available tothe repair technician.

b. The maintenance allocation chart is providedin appendix 111.

c. Repair parts for the RC-292 are provided inTM 11-5820-348-24P.

1-4. Purpose and Usea. Antenna Equipment RC-292 (fig. l-l) is an

elevated, wide-band, modified ground-plane an-tenna designed to increase the distance range ofradio sets in 30 to 76 mc range (b below).

b. The RC-292 can be used with the followingtypical radio sets:

(1) Radio Sets AN/VRC-12, AN/VRC-43through AN/VRC-49 (TM l1 5820-401-12).

(2) Radio Sets AN/VRC-53, AN/VRC-64,AN/GRC-125, and AN/GRC-160 (TM 11-5820-498-12).

(3) Radio Sets AN/PRC-25 (TM 11-5820-398-12) and AN/PRC-77 (TM 11-5820-667-12).

1-8. Description of Antenna EquipmentRC-292

(figs. 1-1 and 1-2)The antenna consists of one vertical radiating elementwhich makes an angle of 140 degrees with the verticalelement. Antenna Base MP-68 mounts the four anten-na elements and provides for connecting the antenna tothe radio set by the CG-107/U. Twelve Mast SectionsAB-35/TRC-7, joined together, form the 30-foot mastassembly for elevating the antenna above ground. Themast assembly is supported on Mast Base AssemblyAB-154/U installed in the baseplate and is held in ver-tical position by 6 guy ropes. The lengths of the antennaelements are adjusted for different frequency ranges by

changing the number of mast sections which make upthe antenna elements (para 2-5b). The swivel stake onwhich the mast is supported facilitates lowering of theantenna to make such changes. The equipment isdesigned for hand or vehicle transportation. When dis-assembled, it is packed in a canvas roll. The RC-292may also be installed on the top of vehicles, such asM577 Command Post (fig. 2-12) which has bracketsprovided for the installation.

a. Antenna Elements. The vertical radiating elementand the three ground plane elements consist of one tothree each Mast Sections AB-21/GR, and one each ofMast Sections AB-22/GR, AB-23/GR, and AB-24/-GR. The mast sections are copper plated, painted tubesof high-strength steel which can be screwed together.

b. Antenna Base MP-68. The MP-68 (fig. 1-3) iscomprised of a ceramic feedthrough insulator, socketsfor mounting the antenna elements, Adapter M-359,and a vise. The feedthrough insulator allows the verti-cal radiating antenna element socket to be connectedthrough Adapter M-359, to the center conductor of theCG-107/U. The three ground plane sockets and theouter conductor of the CG-107/U connect to the metalframework of the antenna base. The vise enables theantenna base to be clamped to the top of the supporting

mast assembly.c. Mast Sections AB-35/TRC-7. Twelve sections are

provided for assembling the 30-foot supporting mastassembly. Each section is tubular and has a male andfemale end which permit the sections to be fittedtogether.

d. Mast Base Assembly AB154/U. This assemblyconsists of Guy Stake GP-101/U attached to a yokeand clevis pin assembly, The lowermost Mast SectionAssembly AB-35/TRC-7 is placed in the yoke andclevis pin assembly. The yoke and clevis pin arrange-ment allows the mast assembly to be lowered to theground by pivoting around the stake.

e. Gut Ropes, Guy Plates, Guy Straps, and Gu yStakes. These items hold the mast assembly in the ver-tical position (fig. 1-l).

f. Reel RL-28, Three of these reels are provided forthe guy ropes. Of the six guy ropes provided, two arewound on each of the three reels.

g. Cable Assembly, Radio Frequency CordCG-107/U. The CG-107/U is a 68-foot length of 50-

ohm, solid-dielectric, coaxial radio-frequency (rf) ca-ble terminated in male Plugs PL-259-A.

h. Adapter M-442. The M-442 consists of an anglebracket provided with Socket SO-259, an insulatedlead, and a ground lead which permits the CG-107/Uto be easily connected to Radio Sets SCR-508,SCR-528, SCR-608, and SCR-628.

i. Adapter Connector UG-255/U. The UG-255/U isrequired to adapt the CG-107/U to Receiver-Trana-mitters RT-66/GRC, RT-67/GRC, RT-68/GRC,RT-246/VRC, RT-524/VRC, and Rdio Sets AN/-PRC-8, AN/PRC-9, and AN/PRC-10.

j. Roll CW-50/TRC-7. The CW-50/TRC-7 is a can-vas roll with pockets and straps to hold the antennacomponents for transportation in the field. A shoulderstrap is provided for easy carrying.

k. Guy Plate. One guy plate is inserted between thesixth and seventh sections of the mast assembly andanother between the eleventh and twelfth sections. Theupper and lower guy ropes attach to these plates.

Chapter 2

INSTALLATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Section 1. SERVICE UPON RECEIPT OF ANTENNA EQUIPMENT RC-292

2-1. Unpackinga. Packaging Data, When packed for ship

men t , t he componen t s o f t he RC-292 a r ewrapped as descr ibed in paragraph 5-3, andenclosed in an inner corrugated car ton. Thecarton is placed in a moisture-vaporproof bar-rier with a desiccant and humidity indicator,which is placed in an outer corrugated carton.The ou t e r c a r ton i s p l aced i n a mo i s tu r e -vaporproof barrier, which in turn is placed inl wooden packing case. Metal straps are ap-plied around the outside of the wooden pack-ing Mae.

b. Removing Contents . Fol low the proce-d u r e s o u t l i n e d b e l o w w h e n u n p a c k i n g t h eequipment.

(1) Cut the metal straps with a suitablecu t t i ng dev ice o r tw i s t t hem wi thpliers until they break.

(2) Remove the nai ls f rom the woodencover of the wooden packing casewith a nailpuller or pry bar.

Caution: Do not pry deeply into theinterior of the case with a pry bar;this may damage the equipment.

radio reception and transmission, because thesurrounding high terra in absorbs r f energy.Weak or other undesired signals can be ex-petted if the radio set is operated under, orclose to, steel bridges, underpasses, powerlines,or power units.

b. The most desirable locations for trans-mission and reception are hilltops, elevations,and slight rises in ground; flat terrain is alsogood.

c. When selecting the antenna site, be surethat the 68-foot coaxial cable will reach fromthe antenna to the radio set.

2-4. Positioning Baseplate and Guy Stakes(fig. 2-2)

a. Place the baseplate, with the cleats up,where the antenna is to be erected.

b. Drive the stake of the AB-154/U throughthe cen t e r ho l e o f t he basep l a t e w i th t hehammer.

c . Drive three guy s takes at a 45-degreeangle into the earth facing away from the mast,(fig. l-l) 15 feet from the centers of the cleatson the baseplate (fig. 2-2). The three stakeswill then be 120° apart, The distance of 15 feetis equal to the length of six mast sections fittedtogether.

d. Tie the flexible end of each of the threeguy straps around the three guy stakes justdriven. Use a cowhitch (fig. 2-8), so that ten-sion on the metal ring will hold the guy strapssecurely.

2-5. Assembling Antenna EquipmentRC-292

a. Assembling Mast.(1)

Assemble six Mast Sections AB-35/TRC-7 by inser t ing the male endsinto the female ends, and place thebottom section of the assembly overthe moveable portion of the AB-154/U(fig. 2-2).

Assemble five additional Mast Sec-t i ons AB-35 /TRC-7 and j o in t he mwith the six already assembled, in-ser t ing one guy plate between the

sixth and seventh sections of the mastassembly.Place a second guy plate over the endof the eleventh section of the mastassembly, and add the final Mast Sec-t ion AB-85/TRC-7 to the assembly.Rotate the mast assembly about theAB-154/U until its free ‘end is mid-way between two of the guy stakes(fig. 2-6).

b. Elements Required. The number of ele-ments required depends on the desired fre-quency range. The following chart shows thenumber of each type of section to assemble fora given frequency range.

c. Assembling Antenna Elements.

NOTETo prevent the mast sections from seiz-ing, apply a thin film of Silicone Com-

pound (NSN 6850-00-880-7616) tot h e t h r e a d s o f e a c h m a s t s e c t i o n .

(1) Assemble the vertical element by screw-ing together the number of Mast Sections AB-21/GR, AB-22/GR, AB-23/GR, and AB-24/GRcorresponding to the desired frequency rangeshown in the chart in b. above. For example, for30 to 36 mc, use one each of AB-21/GR, AB-22/GR, AB-23/GR, and AB-24/GR. Screw AB–21/GR into AB-22/GR, AB-22/GR into AB-23/GR,and AB-23/GR into AB-24/GR.

(2) Insert the assembled vertical elementsinto the socket at the top of the insulator on theMP-68.

(3) For the ground plane, assemble threemore sets of Mast Sections be screwing togetherthe number of Mast Sections AB-21/GR, AB-22/GR, AB-23/GR, and AB–24/GR corresponding tothe desired frequency range shown in the chartabove. For example, for 30 to 36 mc, there willbe 15 mast sections. In each of the three legs ofthe ground plane, assemble 2 each of AB-21/GRand one each of AB–22/GR, AB-23/GR, and AB-24/GR.

(4) Insert each ground plane set into a socketof the MP-68.

(5) Place Antenna Base MP-68 over the topMast Section AB-35/TRC-7 of the previouslyassembled mast and tighten the vice (fig. 1-3).Position the MP-68 so that two of the elementsrest on the ground (fig. 2-9).

(6) Connect Adapter M-359 to the bottomof the MP-68 (fig. 1-3 and 2-10). Connect theCG-107/U to the M-359.

(7) Relieve the strain on the fittings and theconnectors by taping the CG-107/U to the mastassembly approximately every 5 feet to the bot-tom of the MAST.

(8) After the mast is erected, connect theCG-107/U to the radio (para 2-9).

2-6. Erection of Antenna EquipmentRC-292 by Two Men

NOTEThe designation of “man” and “men” infollowing procedures (and para 2-7) ap-ply also to women.

a. Turn the guy plates so that one hole of eachis uppermost.

b. Attach two guy ropes securely to the sideholes of the lower guy plate (fig. l-l). Pass theseguy ropes through their respective side guystake strap rings (fig. 2-3), and then through theholes in the appropriate baseplate cleats. Forma slip knot in each guy rope and pull the free endsthrough the loops of the slip

knots as shown in figure 2-4. When tied in thismanner, each guy rope can be pulled as taut asdesired and can be secured with a simple hitch(fig. 2-5). The guy rope can be readily released.

c. Pull the guy ropes taut and secure themwith a hitch (fig. 2-5).

d. Snap the third guy in the third hole ofthe lower guy plate and lay the guy along themast toward the third guy stake.

e. Attach three guy ropes to the upper guyplate in the same manner.

f . To raise the mast , two men coordinatemovements as follows: One man stands nearthe swivel stake and in line with the third guystake. The second man stands at the top of themast. The first man bows the top end of themast by pulling the free guy ropes taut. At thesame time, the second man, having raised thetop end of the mast to shoulder height, walkstoward the base plate, pushing the mast up-ward, while the f i rs t man walks backwardtowards the third guy stake, pulling the mastslowly and firmly erect (fig. 2-6).

g. When the mast is in the vertical position,adjust and tighten all the guy ropes. Secureeach guy rope with the hi tch as shown infigure 2-6.

2-7. Erecting Antenna in Confined AreasWhere terrain, t rees , or brush make hori-

zontal assembly of the antenna pr ior to i tserection impractical, use the following verticalerection procedure:

a. Lay out the baseplate, swivel stake, andguy stakes as instructed in paragraph 2-4 andas shown in figure 2-7. Remove all obstruc-tions from the area within the limits of theguy stakes.

b. Place two guy plates close to the base-plate, to be used for the upper and lower guyplates.

Note: Lay out the guy ropes so that the upper guyropes will not cross under the lower guy ropes.

c. Select three ropes for the upper guy ropesa n d t h r e e r o p e s f o r t h e l o w e r g u y r o p e s .Thread the upper and lower guy ropes throughthe baseplate guy rope cleats as illustrated infigure 2-7.

d. Arrange the free ends of the lower threeguy ropes so that the assistant can hold themsecurely in one hand, and then arrange the

three free ends of the upper three guy ropesso that the assistant can hold them in his otherhand. The two groups of guy rope ends heldby the assistant will be fed as slack during theassembly procedure when the antenna sectionsare being raised.

e. Assemble the antenna elements (para 2-5)on Antenna Base MP-68 and place the socketof the antenna base onto the top of a MastSection AB-35/TRC-7.

f . Place the upper guy plate on the male( lower) end of the top of an AB-35/TRC-7and place its male end into the female end ofthe second (next lower) AB-35/TRC-7.

g. Continue to raise the antenna vertically(fig. 2–8) by adding additional Mast SectionsAB-35/TRC-7.

h. Attach the lower guy plate between thesixth and seventh mast sections.

i . Af t e r t he l a s t AB-35 /TRC-7 has beenadded, lower the mast into the swivel stake.

2-10. Lowering AntennaTo lower the antenna to change the number of mastsections in the antenna elements, loosen one set of guyropes (upper and lower) and lower the antenna to theground by letting it pivot about the AB-154/U. Afterthe antenna elements have been changed, raise the an-tenna by pulling on the guy ropes (fig. 2-6 or 2-9) andresecure the antenna. Do not loosen more than twoguy ropes.

2-11. Operation Under Unusual Condi-tions

a. A special Stake, Guy GP-101/U (para 1-6) isprovided for arctic conditions.

b. Leave a slight slack in each guy rope to allow forexpansion and contraction of the mast and guy ropes.Check the tautness in the morning and during the day.Experience with temperature conditions in the area willdetermine how taut the guy ropes should be.

c. If the mast and antenna become covered with iceor snow, shut down the radio, brush away the snowand melt the ice.

d. If the stakes driven into poor soil do not hold, asuitable weight, such as a large rock or tree can beplaced on top of the anchor to hold it; or use tools orheavy equipment to hold the stakes in position.

2-12. Install ing RC-292 on M577 Com-mand Post

The RC-292 can be installed on the top of M577 Com-mand Post (TM 9-2300-257-10) and connected to theradio inside the vehicle (fig. 2-12).

a. Insert an AB-35/TRA-7 Mast Section on theM577 mast brackets.

b. Assemble the antenna elements in accordancewith the radio frequency to be used (para 2-5b) and at-ach them to the MP-68 (fig. 1-3).

c. Install the MP-68 on a AB-35/TRC-7 Mast Sec-tion. Attach the CG-107/U to the MP-68, and tape thecable to the AB-35/TRC-7.

WARNINGSWhen the MP-68 is erected, with antennaelements installed, the tips of the groundplane elements must be approximately 5 feetabove the top of the vehicle (so they areabove the head of a person standing on thetop of the vehicle).

d. Install enough Mast Sections AB-35/TRC-7 toraise the antenna so that the tips of the down-pointingground plane elements are approximately 5 feet abovethe top of the vehicle.

e. If you expect windy conditions, or if the antennais to be installed for a few days, put a guy plate betweenthe first two Mast Sections AB-35/TRC-7 (at the topsections below the MP-68) and attach guy ropes be-tween the guy plate and some point on the top of thevehicle.

f. Run the CG-107/U through the driver’s hatchand connect it to the radio (para 2-9). Roll up the extralength of CG-107/U and tie it to convenient points in-side the vehicle to keep it away from movement insidethe vehicle.

After the RC-292 is installed and connected to theradio, a check of the performance of the radio with theRC-292 can be performed using the thru-line watt-meter AN/URM-182 (TM 11-6625-2718-14&P) orAN/URM-182A (TM 11-6625-2718-14-1).

a. Connect the AN/URM-182 or AN/URM-182Aas shown in figure 2-13.

b. Key the transmitter and measure the forward andreflected power. In general, the reflected power indica-tion should be not more than one-third of the forward

OPERATOR/CREW MAINTENANCE

WARNINGDangerous rf voltage exist at the RC-292 elements and connectors. Personnelshould be familiar with the warnings andsafety instructions given in the front of themanual before attempting maintenance.

3-1. Scope of Operator’s MaintenanceFollowing is a list of maintenance duties normallyperformed by the RC-292 operator. These proce-dures do not require special tools or test equip-ment.

u. Preventive maintenance checks and serviceschart (table 3-1)

b. Cleaning (para 3-5).

3-2. Materials Requireda. Trichlorotrifluoroethane.b. Cleaning cloth.

3-3. Operator/Crew Preventive MaintenancePreventive maintenance is the systematic care, ser-vicing, and inspection of equipment to prevent theoccurrence of trouble, reduce downtime, andassure that the equipment is operational

a. Systematic Care. The procedures given intable 3-1 cover routine, systematic care and clean-ing essential to proper upkeep and operation of theequipment.

b. Preventive Maintenance Checks and Servi-ces. The preventive maintenance checks and servi-ces chart (table 3-1) outlines functions to be per-formed daily. These checks and services are tomaintain Army electronic equipment in a combat-serviceable condition; that is, in good general(physical) condition and in good operating condi-tion. To assist operators in maintaining combatserviceability, the chart indicates when to check,how to check, and the normal conditions.. The For

readiness reporting, equipment is not ready/avail-able if column lists the criteria when the RC-292 isclassified as not ready for its primary mission. If thedefect cannot be remedied by the operator, highercategory maintenance or repair is required. Re-cords and reports of these checks and services mustbe made in accordance with the requirements setforth in DA Pam 738-750.

3-4. Preventive Maintenance Checks andServices Periods

Preventive maintenance checks and services(PMCS) for the RC-292 are required on a daily andweekly basis when the R-292 is erected. Table 3-1specifies checks and services that must be accomp-lished under the conditions listed below.

a. During. Be sure to perform during(D) proce-dures each day the antenna is installed.

b. Weekly Procedure. If the equipment was notchecked during the week, perform the D PMCStogether with the weekly (W) PMCS.

c. If Your Radio Equipment Fails to Operate.Troubleshoot the radio system as outlined in theapplicable technical manual for the radio system(appx A). If you are unable to clear the trouble,report the failure using the proper form (DA Pam738-750).

NOTESRoutine checks are not listed as PMCS;

such as: cleaning (para 3-5); checking forfrayed cables; stowing items not in use;covering unused receptacles; checking forloose nuts and bolts. These are things thatshould be done anytime you see they mustbe done.

3-5. Cleaninga. Remove dust and loose dirt using water and cloth

or brush.WARNING

Adequate ventilation must be provided whileusing TRICHLOROTRIFLUOROETHANE.Prolonged breathing of vapor should be

heat or open flamed; the products ofdecomposition are toxic and irritating. SinceTRICHLOROTRIFLUOROETHANE dis-solves natural oils, prolonged contact withskin should be avoided. When necessary, usegloves which the solvent cannot penetrate. Ifthe solvent is taken internally, consult aphysician immediately.

b. Remove grease, fungus, and ground-in dirt witha cloth dampened with trichlofotrinuofoethne.

c. Clean the guy ropes by washing them, allow itemsto dry thoroughly.

ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE

WARNINGDangerous voltages exist in the CG-107/U and the radiating elements. There-fore, never work on or touch these partsuntil the CG-107/U is disconnected fromthe radio.

4-1. Scope of OrganizationalMaintenance

Organizational maintenance of the RC-292 con-sists of the following

a. Preventive maintenance (para 4-3 and table4-1).

b. Touchup painting (para 4-4).c. Troubleshooting and repair (pars 4-5).

4-2. Test Equipment, Tools andMaterials Required

Organizational repair parts are listed in TM 11-5820-348-24P.

a. Test Equipment. Multimeter AN/URM-105is the only test equipment required.

b. Tools. Tool Kit, Electronic Equipment TK-101/G contains all the tools required.

c. Materials.( 1 ) T r i c h l o r o t r i f l u o r o e t h a n e .(2) Paint, Alkyd, Camouflage, Forest Green

per Mil-E-52798.

4-3. Organizational PreventiveMaintenance Checks and Services

Preventive maintenance is the systematic care,inspection, and servicing of equipment to main-tain it in serviceable condition, prevent break-d o w n s , a n d a s s u r e m a x i m u m o p e r a t i o n a lcapability, Organizational preventive mainte-nance checks and services (PMCS) are performedquarterly (table 4-1).

a. Quarterly PMCS will be scheduled in ac-cordance with procedures specified in DA Pam738-750.

b. The Item No. in table 4-1 shall be used asa source of item numbers for the TM number col-umn on DA Form 2404 (Equipment inspectionand Maintenance Worksheet) in recording theresults of the PMCS.

c. If the equipment fails to meet the criteriain the Procedures column of table 4-1, report thefailure in accordance with the procedures speci-f ied in DA Pam 738-750.

d. If the equipment must be kept in constant opera-tion, check and service only those items that can bedone without disturbing operation. Make the completechecks and services when the equipment can be shutdown.

e. Routine checks are not listed in the PMCS table;such as cleaning (para 3-5), dusting, washing; checkingfor frayed cables; stowing items not in use; coveringunused receptacles; and checking for loose guys,stakes, and cable. These are things that should be doneanytime you see they need to be done.4-4. Touchup PaintingThe painted surfaces of the RC-292 which have beenbadly scarred or damaged may cleaned and re-painted as follows

4-5. Troubleshooting and Repaira. Troubleshooting. Use Multimeter AN/URM-105

(TM 11-6625-203-12) to check continuity ofCG-107/U and MP-68.

(1) MP-68.(a) Continuity should be measured between

the upper radiating elements and the center contact ofAdapter M-359 on the MP-68 (fig. 1-3).

(b) Continuity should be measured betweenthe ground plane elements and the shell of CG-107/U.

(2) CG-107/U Continuity should be measuredbetween the center contacts of Plugs PL-259A on theCG-107/U (fig. 3-10) end between the center contactof Adapter UG-255/U.

b. Repair, Replacement parts of the RC-292 andrepair parts of the MP-68 are listed in TM11-5820-348-24P. To disassemble the MP-68 (fig.1-3), unscrew the socket for the vertical element,remove the upper (female) half of the ceramicfeedthrough insulator, and unscrew the nut that holdsthe adapter assembly (located inside).

Chapter 5

SHIPMENT AND LIMITED STORAGE

5-1. Disassembly of EquipmentWarning: Disconnect the radio set from the

antenna before performing any disassembly.

Disassemble the antenna assembly as follows:

a. Prepare a clean, dry surface for stackingthe components.

b. Loosen one set of guy ropes (upper andlower) , and lower the antenna by le t t ing i tpivot about the swivel stake.

c. Remove the tapes that secure Cable As-sembly, Radio Frequency Cord CG–107/U tothe mast.

d. Remove and coil the CG-107/U. (Discon-nect Adapter M-442.)

e. Place the cover on Adapter M–359.

f. Remove all guy ropes and wind them onReels RL-28, two on a reel.

g. Disconnect the veftical and ground planeelements from Antenna Base MP–68.

h. Disassemble the vertical and ground planeelements and group them together accordingto mast section number.

i. Loosen the vise and remove the MP–68from the mast.

j. Disassemble Mast Sections AB-35/TRC-7and stack them together,

k. Stack the guy plates together,

l. Pull the AB-154/U from the earth. Wipeit clean with a cloth.

m. Wipe the baseplate c l e a n .n. Pull the guy stakes and wipe them clean.

5-2. Placing RC-292 in Roll CW-50/TRC-7for Transportation

a. Lay out the CW–50/TRC–7 as shown infigure 5-1.

b. Place Mast Sections AB–35/TRC–7 in thebroad top pocket. Place the technical manualson top of the mast sect ions as shown andtighten the right-hand strap securely.

c. Place Mast Sections AB–21/GR, AB–22/GR, AB–23/GR, and AB–24/GR in the lowersection of the top broad pocket. Tighten theleft strap securely.

d. Place Antenna Base MP–68 in the shortbroad pocket on the r ight s ide and s t rap i tsecurely in place.

e. Place the AB–154/U and the guy stakes(with attached guy straps) in the lower sec-tion of the right hand pocket.

f. Place the hand hammer, Tape TL-83, base-plate, guy ropes, guy plates, and Adapter M–442 in the lower left pocket.

g. Coil the CG–107/U and place it on top ofthe stowed components.

h. Fold in the end flaps of the CW-50/TRC-7and strap securely.

i. Fold the bottom flap of the CW-50/TRC-7up over the components (fig. 1-2).

j . Fold the top f lap of the CW-50/TRC-7down over the bottom flap and strap securely(fig. 1-2).

MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION

Section 1. INTRODUCTION

A3–1. GeneralThis appendix provides a summary of the main-tenance operations for RC–292. It authorizes cat-egories of maintenance for specific maintenancefunctions on repairable items and componentsand the tools and equipment required to performeach function. This appendix may be used as anaid in planning maintenance operations.

A3–2. Maintenance FunctionMaintenance functions will be limited to and de-fined as follows:

a. Inspect. To determine the serviceability y ofan item by comparing its physical, mechanical,and/or electrical characteristics with establishedstandards through examination.

b. Test. To verify serviceability and to detectincipient failure by measuring the mechanical orelectrical characteristics of an item and compar-ing those characteristics with prescribed stand-ards.

c. Service. Operations required periodical y tokeep an item in proper operating condition, i.e.,to clean (decontaminate), to preserve, to drain,to paint, or to replenish fuel, lubricants, hy-draulic fluids, or compressed air supplies.

d. Adjust. To maintain, within prescribed lim-its, by bringing into proper or exact position, orby setting the operating characteristics to thespecified parameters.

e. Align. To adjust specified variable elementsof an item to bring about optimum or desiredperformance.

f. Calibrate. To determine and cause correc-tions to be made or to be adjusted on instrumentsor test measuring and diagnostic equipmentsused in precision measurement. Consists of com-

parisons of two instruments, one of which is acertified standard of known accuracy, to detectand adjust any discrepancy in the accuracy of theinstrument being compared.

g. Install The act of emplacing, seating, orfixing into position an item, part, module (com-ponent or assembly) in a manner to allow theproper functioning of the equipment or system.

h. Replace. The act of substituting a service-able l ike type part , subassembly, or module(component or assembly) for an unserviceablecounterpart.

i. Repair. The application of maintenance serv-ices (inspect, test, service, adjust, align, cali-brate, replace) or other maintenance act ions(welding, grinding, riveting, straightening, fac-ing, remachining, or resurfacing) to restore serv-iceability y to an item by correcting specific damage,fault, malfunction, or failure in a part, subassem-bly, module (component or assembly), end item,or system.

j. Overhaul. That maintenance effort (service/action) necessary to restore an item to a com-pletely serviceable/operational condition as pre-scribed by maintenance standards (i.e., DMWR)in appropriate technical publications. Overhaulis normally the highest degree of maintenanceperformed by the Army. Overhaul does not nor-mally return an item to like new condition.

k. Rebuild. Consists of those serivces/actionsnecessary for the restoration of unserviceableequipment to a like new condition in accordancewith original manufacturing standards. Rebuildis the highest degree of materiel maintenanceapplied to Army equipment. The rebuild opera-tion includes the act of returning to zero thoseage measurements (hours, miles, etc.) consid-ered in classifying Army equipments /compo-nents.

A3-3. Column Entriesa. Column 1, Group Number. Column 1 lists

group numbers, the purpose of which is to iden-tify components, assemblies, subassemblies, andmodules with the next higher assembly.

b. Column Z, Component/Assembly. Column 2contains the noun names of components, assem-blies, subassemblies, and modules for whichmaintenance is authorized.

c. Column 3, Maintenance Functions. Column3 lists the functions to be performed on the itemlisted in column 2. When items are listed withoutmaintenance functions, it is solely for purpose ofhaving the group numbers in the MAC andRPSTL coincide.

d. Column 4, Maintenance Category. Column 4specifies, by the listing of a “worktime” figure inthe appropriate subcolumn(s), the lowest levelof maintenance authorized to perform the func-tion listed in column 8. This figure represents theactive time required to perform that mainte-nance function at the indicated category of main-tenance. If the number or complexity of the taskswithin the listed maintenance function vary atdifferent maintenance categories, appropriate“worktime” figures will be shown for each cate-gory. The number of task-hours specified by the“worktime” figure represents the average timerequired to restore an item (assembly, subassem-bly, component, module, end item or system) toa serviceable condition under typical field oper-ating conditions. This time includes preparationtime, troubleshooting time, and quality assur-ante/quality control time in addition to the timerequired to perform the specific tasks identifiedfor the maintenance functions authorized in themaintenance allocation chart. Subcolumns of col-umn 4 are as follows:

e. Column 5, Tools and Equipment. Column 5specifies by code, those common tool sets (notindividual tools) and special tools, test, and sup-port equipment required to perform the desig-nated function. The tools and equipment arelisted in table 1.

f. Column 6, Remarks. Column 6 contains analphabetic code which leads to the remark in sec-tion IV, Remarks, which is pertinent to the itemopposite the particular code.

A3-4. Tool and Test EquipmentRequirements (see IV)

a. Tool or Test Equipment Reference Code, Thenumbers in this column coincide with the num-bers used in the tools and equipment column ofthe MAC. The numbers indicate the applicabletool or test equipment for the maintenance func-tions.

b. Maintenance Category. The codes in this col-umn indicate the maintenance category allocatedthe tool or test equipment.

c. Nomenclature. This column lists the nounname and nomenclature of the tools and testequipment required to perform the maintenancefunctions.

d. National/NATO Stock Number. This columnlists the National/NATO stock number of the spe-cific tool or test equipment.

e. Tool Number. This column lists the manu-facturer’s part number of the tool followed by theFederal Supply Code for manufacturers (5-digit)in parentheses.

A3–5. Remarks (see IV)a. Reference Code. This code refers to the ap-

propriate item in section II, column 6.b. Remarks. This column provides the required

explanatory information necessary to clarify itemsappearing in section II.
