OPERATION OVERVIEW
Your dealer can program your transceiver for eitherTrunking Format or Conventional Format.
■ Trunking FormatThis format can handle up to 32 systems with up to250 groups in each system. The transceiver can beused in both trunked mode and conventional mode.Systems, groups, and their functions areprogrammed by your dealer.
■ Conventional Format (TK-280/ TK-380 Only)This format can handle up to 250 groups with 250channels in each group. The transceiver can beused only in conventional mode. Groups, channels, and their functions are programmed by your dealer.
11
OPERATING BASICS
■ Switching Power ON/ OFFTurn the Power switch/ Volume control clockwise toswitch the transceiver ON.Turn the Power switch/ Volume controlcounterclockwise to switch the transceiver OFF.If the Radio Password function is programmed,PASSWORD will appear on the display when thepower is turned ON. To unlock the transceiver, enterthe password, then press the S key. If you enter thewrong password, an error tone sounds and thetransceiver remains locked. The password cancontain a maximum of 6 digits.
■ Adjusting the VolumeRotate the Power switch/ Volume control to adjustthe volume. Clockwise increases the volume andcounterclockwise decreases it.
■ Selecting a System/ Group/ ChannelSelect the desired system and group (TrunkingFormat) using the encoder and the keys programmedwith System or Group Up/ Down.Select the desired group and channel (ConventionalFormat) using the encoder and the keys programmedwith Group or Channel Up/ Down.
12
■ Time-out Timer (TOT)The purpose of the Time-out Timer is to prevent anycaller from using a channel for an extended period oftime. If you continuously transmit for a period of time thatexceeds the programmed time, the transceiver willstop transmitting and an alert tone will sound. Tostop the tone, release the PTT switch.Your dealer can program the TOT time in the range of15 seconds to 10 minutes.

Thetransceiver will continue scanning after an adjustabletime delay, if the PTT switch is released, and no furthersignal is received. When the displayed group is not locked out of thescanning sequence, the add indicator ( ) will appear onthe display.
■ Priority ScanThe priority channel must be programmed in orderfor Priority Scan to function. The transceiver will automatically change to thepriority channel when a signal is received on it, evenif a signal is being received on a normal channel. The indicator appears when the displayed channelis the priority channel.
21
2-TONE SIGNALLING (Conventional Format)
2-Tone Signalling is either activated or deactivated byyour dealer.2-Tone Signalling only opens the squelch when thetransceiver receives two tones corresponding to thoseset up in the transceiver.
