CHS welcomes visitors from Guangzhou On the 25th and 26th of January CHS was delighted to host more than forty pupils of the Dong Feng Dong Lu School in

Guangzhou, China. The children arrived bright and smiling in time for an assembly attended by the Lord Mayor and

several members of the Bristol China Partnership group. Pupils from both schools performed songs and the rendition

of “Auld Lang’s Syne” in Mandarin and English in particular will linger long in the memory. The rest of the day was

taken up with workshops in drama, art and music. A visit to the Lord Mayor’s Mansion House provided a fitting end

to the day’s adventures. Saturday saw a trip to the M-Shed where the children created a magnificent Chinese New

Year banner- a walk through the city centre and a boat ride. The pupils of both schools did themselves proud- thank

you for making the weekend such a marvellous success! Read more about the trip, including how Year 2 were

inspired to create their own fan dance, on the website along with many more fantastic photos.

There have

been several

exciting

visitors to the

School this

term. From

16th century sailors to crime scene

investigators the pupils certainly

have enjoyed their entertaining

and informative talks. Read the

full stories online!

Bonjour tout

le monde!

Year 1 are

taking their

first steps in

learning

French. The children have started by

learning some greetings and

pleasantries using a range of fun

interactive resources, songs and

games.

Year 3 visited

@Bristol last

week and took

part in a

hands-on

session

learning how to produce their own

short animation using webcams and

animation software. They also had

experience of creating an animation

in the Aardman exhibition centre.

Food Bank The North West Bristol Foodbank has

written to say “a huge thank you to

everyone who so generously

donated food to the Christmas

appeal”. Contributions from the CHS

community helped to collect a huge

124.72kg to support families in need

during the festive season. Well done!

School Uniform reminder

The snowy weather brought out an

array of resplendent skiing attire,

particularly hats, scarves and gloves.

Now that the normal weather

pattern of rain has returned may we

remind everyone that our school

uniform policy states that:

Accessories e.g. scarves and hats

should be navy. Please ensure that

your child is wearing the correct

uniform. Many thanks.

Musical Events The Music Department is delighted

to announce two upcoming events:

Musical Soirée 25th February 4.30- 5.30pm

Music Department Room L11

This informal concert is open to

pupils from Y3 to Y13 playing any

instrument and will be an ideal

opportunity for our talented pupils

to perform in a friendly setting.

Cabaret Live! 12th March

7.30pm Main School Hall

This evening will feature classical

and musical theatre performances

from pupils taking singing lessons.

Tickets: £7 from the School Office.

Brittany trip A reminder that the Brittany trip for

pupils in years 7 and 8 will run from

Thursday 21st - Wednesday 27th of

March. The Parents information

evening will be taking place prior to

the trip at 16.15 in the New Hall on

Wed 27th February.

Let’s knit the Periodic Table!

(Science & Engineering Week)

In honour of National Science and

Engineering Week, CHS is creating a

giant knitted Periodic Table!

The table will be made up of 20cm

knitted squares, each representing a

different element. The finished table

will be displayed in School before it is

disassembled and the individual

squares sent to the charity ‘Knit a

Square’ which makes blankets for

AIDs orphans in Africa.

Lots of people came along to a launch

event before half term to claim an

element, collect their yarn and

some even had their first

knitting lesson! Watch this

space for progress.

Very well done to

Issy Press who

came 2nd in the

Under 14 regional

qualifier for sabre

fencing. As a

result she has

qualified for the National

Championships to be held in Sheffield

at the beginning of May. Best of luck!

Last Thursday

pupils from Y5

grappled with

timetables,

tangrams and

broken calculators

in the Maths Challenge at BGS.

India, Amelia, Kunal and Arthur came

a fantastic 7th out of 28. We are very

proud of how well they performed.

Year 1’s

“Toys” topic

has certainly

been keeping

them busy!

With a trip to

Tyntesfield and a visit from Sam’s

granny they have learnt all about toys

past and present. They rounded off

the theme with a toy sale on Friday.

House Week Monday 4th- Friday 8th February was House Week for

Winkworth and Wollaston Houses who are supporting

the charities Sailability and Penny Brohn Cancer Care.

The whole school was present for insightful

assemblies given by the charities’ representatives. On

Friday the pupils donned bright and sports clothes for

a mufti day and ran various fundraising events

including a tuck sale, hairstyling and piñata bashing.

Of course the day would not have been complete

without the annual Inter House Pancake Day

Challenge! Participants ran in a team relay race with

the added twist of flipping a pancake before handing

on the baton/pan. Find out who won and the totals

raised when we get back after half term.
