From 23rd May to 20th June 1978 the United Nations General Assembly will hold a SpecialSession, devoted exclusively to disarmament, and will consider proposals to:-

HALT THE ARMS RACE which each day, absorbs $1000 million,over 25 times that spent on aid to lessdeveloped countries.

END THE ARMS TRADE and, instead, to encourage more trade insocially useful products.

BAN NUCLEAR WEAPONSthese do not give any nation security,just the reverse.

SCRAP MILITARY PACTSby planning the mutual dissolution ofNATO and the Warsaw Pact, in the contextof agreed disarmament measures

The British Government should make a positive contribution to disarmament and peace at theUN Special Session, by tabling and1 supporting such proposals. In addition, to create a favourable climateand to prove its sincerity, the government should take independent initiatives to

British Peace Movement leading up to the Special Session of theGeneral Assembly in l\iay-June 197&, a number of organisations withan interest in peace, including some of the largest Trade Unions,Church Groups and Peace Organisations , have come together toorganise an Assembly for Disarmament and Peace to be held inLondon January 28th « 29th 19?8.

-The aim of the Assembly will be to formulaterequests from the British people to our own government which wehope they will act on and convey to the Special Session to makea positive contribution to that session.

We are writing to you in the hope that youwill be able to attend our Assembly , either in part or in whole.If you were able to attend we would like you to make the openingspeech to the assembled delegates on the themes oft- the need forfar reaching measures of disarmament, the role of Mon GovernmentalOrganisations in Disarmament talks,the dangers of the continuingspiral of the Arms Race and of course the whole role of the UnitedNations in talks on disarmament.
