Van Tatenhove, MS, CCC-SLP Description: Communication intervention for special education students with complex communication needs (CCN) often focuses on “concrete” vocabulary instead of core vocabulary. This workshop addresses six steps for creating a core vocabulary classroom. These classrooms emphasize real language development in conjunction with meeting curriculum demands and common core state standards. Learner Outcomes Participants will be able to: Participants will list the 6 steps for creating a core vocabulary classroom. Participants will identify high frequency, re-useable core vocabulary versus activity-specific, infrequently used extended vocabulary. Participants will develop strategies for selecting an appropriate AAC system for their students. Participants will list at least 2 communication partner skills for encouraging use of core vocabulary.
