Artist Biographical Sketch• He was born in Ausburg which is modern day Bavaria. It was a

center of art, culture and trade at the time so it was an ideal place for an artist to be born in. He was the elder brother of Hans Holbein the Younger. His father was Hans Holbein the Elder who was a leader in the transformation of German art from the Gothic to the Renaissance style. He was a key helper in Ambrosius’ love for art. In 1515 he lived in a small town where he helped a painter named Thomas Schmid with the murals in the main hall of the St George monastery. The Portrait of a Boy with Blond Hair and its companion, the Portrait of a Boy with Brown Hair, are among Ambrosius’ best works. Holbein is among the most important of Basel’s illustrators and “small formats” artists.
