Word Sentence Correct Dictionary Definition

Prominently I noticed To be a SLAVE was prominently displayed.

Standing out so as to be seen easily

Unobtrusive And all the while they were attended to by unobtrusive, attentive, and faithful Negro slaves.

Not undesirably noticeable or blatant

Transient Their griefs of transient… Passing with time; transitory

Strenuous I forgave him the causeless blows and injuries he had inflicted on me in childhood and youth and was proud of the favor he now showed me and of the character and reputation I had earned by strenuous and persevering efforts.

Requiring great effort, energy, or exertion

Apparition The black apparition moved past me, went to the water and kneeled down.

A ghostly figure, a specter

• I think the author wrote this book to inform readers how torturing slavery was. He got real-past slaves to write about how they felt and that showed he wanted the facts to be true. His intended audience would probably people who want to learn about history or adults/teenagers.

• The way the author wrote this story could be comparing and contrasting or chronological order. There are many people who felt differently about their slave owners. And, the chapters seem to be in order.

Paragraphs Main Idea

Beginning- Page #39-40

The main idea of this paragraph is why slaves were sold from their owners

Middle- Page #102 Many slaves possibly figured out that when they followed what their master said, they felt as if it was wrong. They learned the difference from right and wrong.

End- Page #121 It tells where some escaped slaves went and lived with Indians.

Comments

“The slave trader tried to present his “merchandise” so that it would bring the highest price. This meant that the slaves should look well-fed, strong, and healthy.”

46 I think details are well for this book because it tells us how they were sold and how slave owners got money.

“And from the slaves point of view the picture was even more grim.”

63 This detail is important because it can make us imagine what it would be like for us to be in their position. It makes me think worse from what I already have.

“Through the songs, they made fun of slave owners.”

114 GOOD DETAIL! It told me that not all of their songs were put in the state of misery.

Facts Page # Comments“When the slave trade began, West Africa had a highly developed civilization, with complex economic and political institutions.”

20 The author probably put this information in to tell readers how Africa was and what happened there.

“The most informal was the sale of a slave by one slave owner to another, usually a friend neighboring plantation.”

43 This was included because it’s one of the ways a slave was sold to one another.

“Most plantation owners lived modestly and some even poorly.”

59 Maybe he wanted us to know not all plantation owners are as rich as they seem.

“The field slaves were not exposed to the slave owner’s ideas as much as the house servant.”

98 I think this was put in the book because maybe house servants were treated better then the field slaves.

“Songs were used in every aspect of their lives.”

112 It is true because they didn’t have anything to do for fun, so they might as well just sing. It would most likely get their emotions out.

Opinions Page # Comments“The slaves depicted there were too reminiscent of the stereotyped blacks of the movies of the forties and fifties- happy, laughing, filled with love for white people.”

5 When he said “too,” I found that as a key word for an opinion…

“Its longevity is also due to Tom Feelings‘ extraordinary paintings, which were simultaneously lyrical and horrifying.”

7-8 Lyrical and horrifying is what he thought of his paintings. Those words can make it sound like an opinion.“The houses of the slaves were generally more fit for animals than human beings.”

62 Maybe a human could live in there. Even though it might look like an animals home, anyone could live in it.“And in one of the greatest black religious songs, the slaves took the story of Samson, and with their genius for going to the core of an experience, they put their words into Samson’s mouth and expressed their deepest feelings.”

84 Does he think this is the greatest religious song? Or was it called the greatest by others? Many people have a different favorite song.

“Nothing could do that, but whatever pleasure the slave was able to provide for himself was a remarkable testimony to the ability to retain humanity under the most inhuman conditions.”

111 He believes that “Nothing could do that,” but something could have. He just didn’t know it.

#1: “I had never seen white people before and they appeared to me the ugliest creatures in the world.” (Page 22)- Many people in our community are stereotypical and judge by someone's looks. It is offending. I've heard many say bad things about ones appearance.

#3:”Ol’ miss and massa was not mean to us at all until after surrender and we were freed.” (Page 147)- I can relate to this because when I tell on my siblings, they stop messing with me. They know they’ll get in trouble.

#2: “I wanted to ride in the buggy, but I didn’t want to go with him.” (Page 50)- I always act like this when I don’t want to go with my brother ‘cause he’s so annoying! Just like slave owners.
