Dear Community Members,All 396 children, 70 staff and 13 board members thank you for the $209,262 you generously contributed over the past year. The donations fall into two categories:

General oPeraTions

The school received $134,553 in unrestricted contributions that benefit every child in every classroom. Unrestricted donations give us the flexibility to assign resources to the most critical and strategic areas, enabling us to plan for and respond to our community’s needs. Most importantly, donations in this category help us pay salaries and benefits for our faculty, the passionate professionals and leaders in immersion education that inspire our students every day.

Despite the economy, the total donated for general operations was the second highest ever. It was primarily made up of $39,769 in Annual Giving (the highest ever), and $88,214 in auction sales, not including the special appeal. Special thanks to our auction chairs, Kate Schweitzer, Mark Jones, and Jennifer Farmer, and to the many other volunteers who made these programs successful. Many thanks also to all of the TIS community members and Portland-area businesses who donated products and services to make the auction a success.

Other fundraisers contributed over $6,569, including Scrip ($3,445), Sally Foster gift wrap ($2,207), and miscellaneous ($917).

TarGeTed ProGram funds

Fundraisers for this category are specifically designed to address special services, supplemental needs, or to kick start a major school effort. Contributions to these programs are restricted and can only be used to fund the designated need. In total, we received $74,709 in donations designated for a specific purpose:

Gym renovations and a new playing field were made possible by the $44,000 in contributions received for the special appeal at the November 2008 auction. This is the second highest amount ever received in support of a TIS auction special appeal. The gym renovation included a new gym floor, wall repairs, painting, and window protection. In addition, our students now have a large grassy field on which to run and play sports, with a path to Sherman Street.

The TIS Library Media Center received $3,110 in support from the second annual TIS Wine Tasting. These funds help grow the library’s collection, support our teachers and students in our inquiry-centered classrooms, and maintain and create programming such as the Beverly Cleary Reading Challenge. A special thank you to co-chairs Cheryl Meloy and Kathy Guilfoyle and their team of volunteers for throwing a great party in support of our library.

The art, music and English programs received $11,578 from the annual Run for the Arts jog-a-thon. Thank you to all our children for their work securing pledges and running laps. Thank you also to everyone who supported our runners with pledges and with enthusiastic cheering and noisemaking. Run for the Arts is a wonderful event that not only provides our children with exercise but also lessons in perseverance, the importance of the arts, and philanthropy. These donations pay for art and music supplies, special assemblies, and theater tickets to enrich our English program.

We are grateful recipients of $15,000 for the Capital Fund, dedicated to support our facilities even when the school does not have a capital campaign in progress.

Additional thanks to the many TIS family members who donated gifts in kind for the library, classrooms, and teacher use. Your support truly makes a difference.

It is because of all our generous donors today and in years past that TIS continues to realize its mission of inspiring children to become global citizens. Thank you to everyone who has invested in the mission and vision of The International School and in the future of our students.

Thank you, 谢谢, Gracias, ありがとう!

Sincerely,

Dr. Alfonso OrsiniHead of School

The 2008-09 school year was a time of substantial achievement in many areas. Most importantly, our students made great progress, becoming more fluent, more confident, and increasing their understanding of the world around them. The progress made by children in just one year is marvelous to see.

cOMPleted strategic Plan. TIS trustees led our community to create the first TIS strategic plan. The comprehensive planning process resulted in a revised mission statement, clearly stated vision and values, and an extensive and actionable plan for the coming years. Thank you to all those who participated; special thanks to Wannamaker Consulting for providing invaluable leadership in this process.

excelled in language PrOFiciency

benchMarks. The TIS strategic plan states that our students should be fluent in their target language by grade five. In 2008-09, TIS fifth graders excelled in the Japanese Proficiency Test (JPT), the Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), and the proficiency test for Chinese as a foreign language (HSK). One TIS third grader was the youngest child ever to pass the HSK test. reached recOrd enrOllMent. An all-time record of 396 students attended TIS, with 47 percent in the Spanish Track, 39 percent in the Chinese Track, and 14 percent in the Japanese Track. The student body was 5.6 percent greater than the prior year. Strong enrollment enables students to interact with a larger peer group, learn more from the cultures around them, and benefit from more teachers, staff, technology and facilities.

began iMPleMenting the ib. This was a pivotal year for the school’s adoption of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). The school funded an IB coordinator and IB teacher training, and the faculty devoted innumerable hours to collaborative planning. The IB lessons started taking hold, and the children quickly learned how their questions would guide their learning. It takes tremendous work to shift a whole community to a new teaching framework, and we took great strides in 2008-09.

Funded caPstOne study abrOad. After many years as a successful parent-run program, Capstone Study Abroad became a true element of the TIS fifth grade curriculum. The school staff now plan Capstone trips and the school guarantees full funding for student Capstone expenses. The administration still relies on and greatly appreciates parent help preparing for and chaperoning the trips.

iMPleMented new Faculty

cOMPensatiOn Plan. This was the first year of implementation for the new compensation plan adopted after considerable study in the spring of 2008. The goals of the plan include compensating faculty at market rates, and increasing compensation predictably and equitably for

teacher education and experience levels. The plan is being implemented in stages to pay at market rates as soon as possible.

cOnducted wOrldwide head search.

Thanks to the efforts of Trustee Mark Holman and his team’s very inclusive head search process, Dr. Alfonso Orsini became TIS Head of School in July 2009.

increased adMinistrative staFFing. TIS benefited greatly this year from the first TIS facilities manager, Frank Bojanowski, hired in April 2008 to ensure that our facilities are clean, green, safe and welcoming. The school also funded our first Development Director, Kelsey Cleveland, hired in August 2009. As stated in the strategic plan, the establishment of a development office is necessary to help TIS have a broad base of financial contributions that meet short and long term financial needs.

enhanced and exPanded Facilities. This was a very big year for facilities improvements, with great thanks to Facilities Manager Frank Bojanowski. The main facilities accomplishments were:

Opened the Arthur Street campus with five classrooms and an outdoor play area, all specially designed and built for our youngest students.

Completed phase I of a major 3rd floor remodel of the main building at the top of the hill. This project turned four noisy partitioned spaces into large walled classrooms, moved the school’s main offices to an accessible space on the first floor, and secured the courtyard area with attractive gates and security lighting. (Phase II replaced the last three partitioned spaces with four additional walled classrooms and an ADA restroom in the summer of 2009.)

Remodeled the gym with new flooring, hardened walls, window safety glass, upgraded sound system connections and new paint (funded by the November 2008 auction special appeal).

Built a new soccer field on an adjacent land parcel with a trail leading to the main campus (funded by the November 2008 auction special appeal).

invested in technOlOgy. In August 2008, TIS teachers were introduced to their new networked iMAC computers, funded by the November 2007 auction special appeal. The teachers received training, tools and support, and quickly integrated the computers into their planning and teaching. Many thanks to parent volunteer Hugh Macworth for the tremendous time and energy he spent to make this deployment happen. In addition, the administrative staff adopted a new database that makes an important difference in the day-to-day school communications, record-keeping, admissions and development work.

awarded custOM hOuse. Trustee Kat Topaz led a very extensive effort which resulted in TIS being awarded the opportunity to take possession of the Federal Custom House building in downtown Portland. The award from the Department of Education of this multi-million dollar building is a testament to the school and our mission. TIS received tremendous press coverage and recognition as an important asset for the Portland community.

iMPrOved gOvernance structure.

TIS trustees accomplished a comprehensive review of the school’s bylaws using outside experts and parents with expertise in governance and education. This was a major effort that clarified the roles of the board, the officers and the Head of School, and ensured that our by-laws match best practices for independent schools.

These accomplishments add to the school’s strong base and ongoing traditions that support every child every day.
