86a Lodge Road Southampton SO14 6RG Dear Flute Player ‘Tips Tricks and Alien Noises’ Flute Workshop with Ian Clarke On Friday 28th May Professor Ian Clarke from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama will be visiting Edinburgh to run an afternoon of workshops for flute players of Grade 2+ standard. The workshops will include sessions on technique, warming up, a flute choir playing session, as well as how to execute extended techniques on the flute. Ian Clarke is one of the leading player/composers in the flute world, with compositions on both the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall syllabuses. Well-known for his inspiring and supportive manner, Ian is in demand throughout the UK and abroad to take masterclasses and lectures. His compositions are performed regularly all over the world by leading players, flute groups & students. He was recently Flutewise artist of the year; Flutewise members premiered his new ensemble piece Zig Zag Zoo at the Barbican and Ian appeared as a guest artist with Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. Ian also appeared as a celebrity artist at the NFA’s Convention in New York 2009 following several previous convention appearances and regular USA tours. He has also performed numerous times as a guest artist at the BFS's International Convention in addition to recent appearances for the Italian, Dutch & Slovenian flute societies. Zoom Tube has been used as an international competition piece, features in the Peters' Edition GCSE music anthology and has featured in three of BBC's Young Musician of the Year woodwind finals. The last two woodwind finals were were won by a flautist playing a Clarke piece; Spiral Lament 2010 and Zoom Tube 2008. Ian is an International Miyazawa artist. The workshop costs £5 and is open to flute players of Grade 2 and above standard, running from 2.30pm until 5.30pm. It is being held in Canongate Kirk on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh and will be followed by a concert in Canongate Kirk at 7pm. The concert will include performances of his own works by Ian, a set by Flautissimo, the Southampton Flute Orchestra, and a group performance of items prepared in the afternoon workshop. The Wind Section and Omni Music will also be there with flutes, sheet music and accessories. Friends and family are warmly invited to the concert, tickets are available for £5, booking in advance is advised.
