If you were enrolled last year and want to be in 4-H again, YOU MUST RE-ENROLL! If you miss the deadline, you will need to come into the Extension Office for Kelsey Ahrens, Office Manager to over- ride the computer system. Please make it easy on you and us! Enroll in 4-H by going to https://ne.4honline.com to ex- hibit at the 2019 Otoe County Fair! 4-H members have until June 15 to add or delete only non-livestock projects by calling the Extension Office. No 4-H projects can be added after that time in accordance with the Nebraska State 4-H Policy. At the Otoe County Fair, 4-H members may only enter exhibits in the projects in which they are enrolled. Favorite Foods Revue Mark your calendar! The Favorite Foods Revue will be Thursday, July 11, 6:30 p.m. at the Fair Center in Syracuse. The Favorite Foods Revue combines food preparation, menu planning, and table setting skills. 4-H members participating in the Favorite Foods Revue need to plan a menu suitable for an indoor or outdoor meal. One food from the menu should be prepared by the 4-H member and brought along to the Revue with the selected table service, centerpiece, menu card, recipe card, and card table. An addition to the Favorite Foods Revue is the Favorite Foods Revue with Dairy Theme. This contest is the same except the 4-H members must prepare the food item using dairy, work as a team of two, and use technology during the interview with the judge - iPad, laptop, PowerPoint, picture story, video - be creative! The Favorite Foods Revue and the Junior Division 4-H Life Challenge Contest will be July 11. More information on both will be in future Tips.

Senior Division 4-H Life Challenge The Senior Division 4-H Life Challenge will be Thursday, May 23, 7:00 p.m. at the Fair Center on the Otoe County Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Senior division youth (12 & over) will participate in Placing Classes and the Challenge. A $20.00 cash award will be given to the Champion donated by American Family Insurance and a $20.00 gift card will be presented to the Reserve Champion donated by Cubby’s. This contest is open to all Senior 4-H members! The Junior Division 4-H Life Challenge Contest will be Thursday, July 11, in conjunction with the Favorite Foods Revue.

Robotics Kits Available 4-H members interested in learning about robotics can check out a Lego Mindstorm NXT kit from the Otoe County Extension Office and sign up for robotics as a 4-H project. Youth must have a laptop computer available for loading the programming software and agree to unload the software at the end of the loan period. Kits will be checked out for four weeks on a first come first served basis. For more information about this 4-H project, contact the Extension Office at 402-269-2301.

Insurance for 4-H Clubs American Income Life Insurance has special activities coverage for accident or illness for 4-H clubs. This can be purchased for a one day activity or for a full year. Both are at a very reasonable price. If you would like more information or if you have questions, please go to: www.AmericanIncomeLife.com or contact the

State Fair Books Once again the 2019 State 4-H Fair book is available on the 4-H Website: https://4h.unl.edu. Families who do not have access to the Internet may contact the Extension Office for assistance .

Summer 4-H Intern Wyatt Hubbard, a sophomore at UNL pursuing a double major in Animal Science and Ag Education will intern for Otoe County this summer. Wyatt is a 13-year Buffalo County 4-H Alumnus, whose favorite project was Beef. Wyatt enjoyed watching how much his calves would grow and change!

Wyatt will begin working on May 6. He will lead our PASE efforts in livestock judging and the skill-a-thon, as well as assist in numerous 4-H summer workshops. Stop in and welcome Wyatt to Otoe County!

Lamb Weigh-In & Tagging Market Lamb weigh-in will be May 18th. from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the O.K. Pavilion. We will be tagging and weighing all market lambs for the Otoe County Fair. If you are going to the Nebraska State Fair, DNA samples can be pulled at this time.

County Fair Bedding Fees The Fair Board will be collecting money for livestock bedding. Livestock entries are due July 15. At that time 4-H members will need to pay for wood chips and/or shavings for cattle. The money will be collected at the Extension Office. All cattle will be charged $10.00/head, except stocker feed-ers are $5.00/head. There will be no refunds for animals that do not come to the fair.

Horse ID’s and District Entries All horse project 4-H members, remember this important date - Friday, May 10th. All horse ID’s and District Horse Show entries are due in the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on May 10th.

LIVESTOCK/ANIMAL NEWS….

The Senior Breeding Heifer class must be born between September 1, 2017 - December 31, 2017.

Clover Kid Bucket Calves Bucket Calves must be no more than six (6) months of age and weigh no more than 350 pounds. Exhibition includes a short interview with the judge to discuss the youth’s knowledge of caring for and raising the calf. The calves will be shown starting at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 26, before the 4-H Beef Show. Clover Kids must purchase and tag the calf and complete Animal ID sheet by June 15th which are all available at the Extension Office.

YQCA Training (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals)

must be completed by June 15!

All Animal ID’s , except horse, are due June 15. We realize this is a Saturday, but the date stays the same. State 4-H entries are due at 11:59 p.m. on June 15. We will accept county entries on Monday, June 17.

Summer Animal Science Contests

Wyatt Hubbard, from Elm Creek, will be our 2019 Otoe County 4-H Summer Intern. Wyatt has offered to prepare Otoe County 4-H members to participate in livestock judging, livestock quiz bowl, and the livestock skill-a-thon at PASE. Wyatt competed in both livestock judging and skill-a-thon. Wyatt and his team members competed at the National Skill-A-Thon competition in Louisville, Kentucky after winning the Nebraska 4-H Skill-A-Thon competition at PASE. PASE, Premier Animal Science Events, is designed to help youth learn about issues related to the animal industry, explore career opportunities that are available, compete with other teens from across the state and have FUN! The event is sponsored by Nebraska 4-H, the College of Agricultural Science and Natural Resources, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Nebraska Investment Finance Authority.

We would like to form teams that would practice during May and June. These teams would represent Otoe County at PASE Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18. Age ranges are 10 to 18 as of December 31. For the livestock judging, livestock quiz bowl and the livestock skill-a-thon, there are two divisions – intermediate (10-13) and senior (14 and older). If interested in practicing and competing at PASE, please contact the Extension Office at 402-269-2301 or via email at [email protected]. Practices will begin Wednesday, May 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Training All 4-H members enrolled in beef, dairy goat, meat goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep, and swine projects are required to complete Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training to exhibit their livestock. This train-ing must be completed by June 15. You can achieve this, one of two ways: 1) Web-Based Training – The cost is $12.00. 2) Instructor-Led Training (Face-to-Face) – Cost is $3.00, but must register on line before class! To begin YQCA, you MUST be enrolled in Otoe County 4-H for 2018. Enroll at: ne.4honline.com. To complete YQCA training, please follow these steps:

1) Go to yqca.org and click on the “Sign Up” or “Log In” button in the middle of the screen. 2) On the left side of screen, you will see “4-H Online Sign In.” Click on “Sign in with 4HOnline” (blue bar).

All 4-H members (club members or independent members) need to use the “4-H” tab and not the “Independent” tab.

3) In drop down menu, select “Nebraska 4-H Youth Development” and click on “Select Organization” (blue bar).

4) On the login screen, you will use your FAMILY 4HOnline email and password to sign in. 5) Next, you will see a drop down box with active family members. Select family member’s name and click

“Select member.” 6) Click on the appropriate course based on the 4-H member’s age as of December 31. 7) Choose which training you will do:

a. Web-Based (If you are doing the online course, click on the “Purchase Course” (red bar) under Web-based training for $12.00).

b. Instructor-Led (If you are doing Face-to-Face training, select “Nebraska” from the drop-down menu and select the appropriate training session you will attend for $3.00).

8) Click on Purchase Course (red bar). 9) Select payment method and pay with credit card. 10) After completing the online or Face-to-Face training, you will need to print out a certificate of comple-

tion. A copy MUST be turned in to the Nebraska Extension in Otoe County Office by June 15. Certificates can be dropped off, mailed, or emailed to [email protected].

Face-to-Face trainings will be at the Nebraska Extension in CASS County Office:

Please call the Extension Office at 402-269-2301 to pre-register, but YOU STILL NEED TO REGISTER ON LINE! We need a minimum of five 4-H members to provide this training with a maximum of 15 youth at each training. These trainings will be presented by Nebraska Extension Educator Brett Kreifels.
