* The samurai lived by a code called bushido, which means "way of the warrior."

* They spent their entire lives preparing to be great warriors.

* They trained fiercely, fought bravely, and died with honor.

* Their weapons were the samurai sword and the bow and arrow.

* The samurai owed their greatest loyalty to their daimyo.

* Personal honor was very important for the samurai.

* They would demonstrate this by riding into battle shouting out his name and family.

* If a samurai's daimyo was murdered his samurai would commit suicide out of disgrace (seppuku).

* By 900 Japan had stopped paying tribute to China.

* In 1268, Kublai Khan sent official representatives to demandtribute from Japan.

* In November 1274, Khan sent an armada, to Japan. But the samurai defeated his army.

* In 1281, Kublai Khan tried again but his armada was destroyed by a typhoon.

* No Mongol army ever successfully invaded Japan.

* As the violence under Shogun rule increased, tax revenue and respect for the emperor declined.

* Oda Nobunaga was the first leader to try to reunify Japan. He failed but did reduce the power of the Shoguns.

* Tokugawa was the leader who finally reunited Japan under one rule.

* He ordered the daimyo to destroy their castles/spend most of the year in Edo, so he could watch over them.

* Toyotomi Hideyoshi, unified Japan in 1590. But after he died the peace collapsed.

* With peace returning to Japan the samurai were forced to take powerless government jobs.

* In 1876 new laws prohibited samurai from carrying swords.

* Thousands of samurai rebelled at these insults to their honor.

* Their forces were defeated by the modern Japanese army.

* The samurai owed their greatest loyalty to their lord (daimyo).

* The samurai term bushido means “way of the warrior”.

* The Mongol army never was able to successfully invade Japan.
