It is considered as one of the top ten majorproblems in the schools in the US today.

In New York Citys publicschool system, about150,000 of 1 million publicschool students are absent ona typical day (Garry, 1996)

The Los Angeles UnifiedSchool District reported thatan average of 62,000students, or 10 percent of itsenrollment, are out of school

each day (Garry 1996)

In a study conducted by the National Centerfor Education Statistics, the averagegraduation rate in the U.S. is 73.4% with thedrop-out rate at 3.9% (Bye, 2010)

18 states had a graduation rate lower thanthe national average (Bye, 2010)

24 states had a drop-out rate at or higher

than the national average (Bye, 2010)

When students are inside the school they areprotected against the use of drugs andalcohol. They can stay away from gangs andvices.

However, when they do not go to school theyare more likely to be involved with other dropouts who are involved in drugs andalcohol. In a study conducted by Henry et. al.(2009), they found that truancy was a riskfactor for the subsequent use of marijuana.

Recent studies, however, show that truancycould be the beginning of a life-time problemfor the truant child. It is even considered asthe stepping stone to delinquent and

criminal activity (Bilchik, 1996). Researchershave already established that students whodrop out of school are more likely to end upin prison.

In New York, the schools refer truant studentsto probation departments as status offendersor as persons in need of supervision (PINS)

Some states send remove the children fromschool and send them to foster care

Some states invite parents to a mediationsession with the representatives of the school

In Florida, parents of children whocommit excessive unauthorizedabsences are placed in Jail.

Under the said law, the parents ofstudents who miss school more than15 days within a three-month period

could serve jail time. The academic officer for the Palm

Beach School District said thatPalmBeach School District staff havestruggled to force parents to bringtheir absent kids back to school ever

since budget cuts ended lawenforcement interventions severalyears agoWe needed a little bit ofmuscle. There was no followthrough.
