When traffic or terrible dri- vers frustrate us, our immedi- ate reaction is usually anger. We feel threatened by someone taking away our precious time or driving in a potentially life- endangering manner. A natural reaction is to feel angry, to want to fight back. However, we’re also aware that fighting back is certainly not the right answer, but also usually an impossible or dan- gerous one. As a result you’re more angry, frustrated and stressed knowing there’s noth- ing you can do. However, there are things you can do. Start minimizing such stress by remembering you can’t control the outside world, only yourself. Remind yourself it isn’t personal. Traffic and dangerous drivers would still be there even if you weren’t. Next, stop letting the anger Tips for Minimizing “Behind the Wheel” Stress and stress control your mind. Turn on the radio or CD player and really listen hard. Try the old trick of counting slowly to ten. You want to replace think- ing about what’s just bothered you with anything else. You also want to physically relax your body, since anger makes our muscles tense and that helps increase stress lev- els. Try relaxing your muscles, one group at a time, first tight- ening up arm or leg muscles, then consciously relaxing them. Anger behind the wheel can lead to dangerous situations. Stress behind the wheel can leave you feeling worn out and can, eventually, affect your overall health. Being aware of when you’ve become angry and stressed, and working to reduce those reactions, can lead to a healthier and safer driving you. But today those of us who eat a lot of fish may not be doing our- selves or the environment any favor. The two major concerns are overfishing and pollution. Demand for low-calorie, protein-rich fish has grown tremendously alongside increases in world population. At the same time, the technolo- gies employed for catching seafood have improved to the point that the commercial fish- ing industry has essentially stripped the ocean of its once teeming fish populations. One recent analysis concluded that only 10 percent of the large predatory fish that once roamed the world’s oceans are left, due to overzealous sport and commercial fishing. Another study concluded that three-quarters of the world’s fisheries are either fully fished or overfished. Pollution from industrial, agricultural and other everyday activities like electricity gener- ation and automobile driving has also taken a serious toll on the health of the remaining fish species. Scientists routinely find unsafe levels of mercury, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides and other harsh toxins in the fat, internal organs and even mus- cle tissue of many different kinds of fish. These contami- nants are then passed on up the food chain to our dinner plates. According to Seafood Watch, a project of the Monterey Bay Aquarium that works to educate the public about the seafood crisis, con- sumers can make a difference by getting educated so as to make smart choices about what seafood to avoid. Consumers can download and print out free Seafood Watch pocket guides to the “best choices” across six differ- ent regions of the U.S.—after all, what’s abundant and sus- tainably harvested in your area may not be the same for some- one across the country. Another convenient way to get the low-down on the fish you may be contemplating buying at the grocer or a restau- rant is to text “30644” with the message “FISH,” followed by the name of the specific fish in question. In a few seconds, an automated response will come back from the non-profit Blue Ocean Network’s FishPhone service with information on the status of the fish in question— and alternatives, should Blue Ocean consider the fish an undesirable choice. The basic skinny on fish consumption is that if you like it, you should eat it, but respon- sibly—that means in modera- tion and armed with the proper knowledge of which types of fish to buy and which to avoid. For those looking to cut down on or eliminate seafood from their diets but still gain the health benefits of eating fish, plenty of alternatives exist. As most vegetarians know, beans, tofu and many nuts can be significant alterna- tive sources of protein. And walnuts, flaxseed and hemp oil/seeds are all rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids common in many fish and thought to help ward off heart disease, cancer, macular degeneration (age-related blindness), arthri- tis and inflammatory disorders. (NAPSA)-When Bonnie Conway began to experience vision loss due to an eye disease known as wet age-related macular degener- ation, or wet AMD, she worried that she might have to leave her job. As Borough Manager of her local community, Conway relies heavily on her sight to complete her bookkeeping, filing and letter writing duties. More than 15 million American seniors live with some form of AMD, a leading cause of blind- ness in people over 60. There are two forms of AMD, dry and wet. While all cases begin as the dry form, it is the wet form that accounts for about 90 percent of all AMD-related blindness. Wet AMD can result in sudden and severe loss of a person's cen- tral vision, and can worsen rapidly without treatment. Like many of the 1.7 million people with the advanced form of the disease, Conway had difficulty reading and the faces of her friends and loved ones became blurry. "I was a big reader. The most frustrating thing for me was losing the ability to read without a magni- fying glass," said Conway. "I start- ed to accept that my wet AMD would eventually get so bad that I'd have to give up my job." But in August of 2006, Conway's eye doctor, a retina specialist, began treating her with monthly injections of Lucentis(r) (ranibizumab injection), which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treat- ment of wet AMD. Since starting treatment, Conway's vision has improved from 20/80 to 20/40 on the eye chart. "Bonnie was one of the first patients in our practice to receive Lucentis, and because she's con- tinued to come for treatment every month, her vision has improved and she's been able to continue her normal activities," said Dr. Miguel Busquets of Associates in Ophthalmology. In clinical studies of Lucentis, nearly all patients (90 percent) treated once a month maintained their vision for up to two years. About 40 percent of patients' vision actually improved by three lines or more on the study eye chart at two years, though a few patients have experienced some vision loss. Because AMD advances so quickly, and can cause sudden and irreversible loss of vision, early diagnosis and treatment are critical. The National Eye Institute recommends that people aged 60 or older schedule eye exams every two years, and anyone who notices changes in vision should receive an eye exam right away. Lucentis is a prescription med- ication given by injection into the eye. Lucentis has been associated with detached retina and serious eye infection and should not be used in patients who have an infection in or around the eye. Increases in eye pressure have been seen within one hour of an injection. Although uncommon, conditions associated with eye- and non-eye-related blood clots (arterial thromboembolic events) may occur. Serious side effects included inflammation inside the eye and, rarely, effects related to the injection procedure such as cataract. The most common non- eye-related side effects were nose and throat infection, headache, and respiratory and urinary tract infections. The most common eye- related side effects were the feel- ing that something is in your eye, and increased tears. If your eye becomes red, sensi- tive to light, painful or has a change in vision, you should seek immediate care from your eye doctor. For full prescribing information, talk to your doctor or call 866- LUCENTIS (866-582-3684) or visit www.LUCENTIS.com.
