also known as alternative medicine or herbal medicine, there is a lot of misinformation about this form of treatment. as it grows in popularity, several myths have risen around the use and effectiveness of Natural Medicine. here are four of the most common misconceptions.

Myth 1 Scientific evidence doesn’t support Natural Medicine.

there is plenty of peer-reviewed scientific evidence to suggest health benefits from natural medicine. For example, peppermint has been shown to improve irritable bowel syndrome and that kava reduces anxiety. Natural products are also often found in many of the drugs that are currently available, and even some of the most commonly used drugs, such as antibiotics are derived from nature. a perfect example is aspirin, which is derived from salicylic acid found in willow and meadowsweet.

Myth 2 Herbs aren’t effective or are took weak to treat illnesses.

how herbs affect illness is dependent on being able to identify the problem. this is true for any form of treatment. in herbal medicine, a practitioner would spend time recognising a person’s individual biochemical structure and any imbalances they carry before prescribing herbal medicine. it also goes without saying, herbs that would help one type of illness may not have an effect on others.

Myth 3 Herbs don’t have any side-effects.

you have to be careful about where the herbs are imported from as some may contain mercury sulphide that can cause nerve and kidney damage. as with any drug, there is also risk involved in taking herbs.

Myth 4 Natural Medicine and Conventional Medicine are incompatible.

through proper consultation with your medical doctor and herbalist, herbal treatments can be combined with many conventional forms of medical treatment. herbs can reduce or increase the effects of certain medications, so seek professional advice before combining the two.

While most people will head to their doctor for prescription medication when their child has common complaints, there are a range of alternative natural remedies that may hold the answer. here are some simple, natural treatments for common childhood ailments that may save you money and a trip to the doctor.

Colds

“Chicken soup for the soul” is not just a saying – a scientific study from the university of Nebraska Medical Centre in omaha, found evidence that chicken soup contains anti-inflammatory properties that may help prevent a cold’s miserable side effects. Ginger and peppermint tea can also help relieve symptoms. eucalyptus oil in a vaporiser helps to clear the airways and disinfect the room.

Cough/sore throat

there are many natural remedies for treating a sore throat or cough. Most will prescribe honey as the first tried and tested method of choice, particularly since raw honey has properties that soothe the throat. salt is a great alternative remedy for sore throats as it is a natural disinfectant. Gargle a warm glass of water filled with ½ teaspoon of salt to help eliminate and soothe the pain.

Small wounds, cuts and burns

Calendula oil with a few drops of lavender essential oil is an effective wound healer and safe to use on children. however, serious wounds should be attended to by a doctor.

Upset stomach

peppermint tea is a fantastic remedy for soothing an upset stomach, as is ginger – whether as a strong ginger ale, tea or a piece of candied ginger. in China, ginger has been used to treat upset stomachs for over 2000 years. Ginger is also helpful to allay travel sickness.

Earaches

olive oil and garlic have antibacterial properties that are known to help earaches and infections. Garlic is a natural antibiotic that alleviates pain and infections. there is a specific way to prepare the treatment that you can find here [doctoroz.com/videos/home-remedies-put-test?page=4]. this treatment has been traditionally used for children in Germany as prescription antibiotics are reserved for serious ailments. if you suspect damage to the eardrum take your child to the doctor immediately.

Natural treatments for common symptoms in kids

*Note: The above suggestions are based on tried and tested natural methods for treating minor ailments. They are not in any way intended to replace the advice of a qualified health professional. If you are unsure of the seriousness of your child’s symptoms, please consult your doctor.

processed foods and snacks seem to have crept their way into every day eating, especially true for our children. Busy work schedules and hectic lifestyles have led to reliance on take-away and pre-made options. unfortunately we are often informed that these are perfectly healthy options, which is not the case for the majority of packaged foods.

developing bodies rely on the nutrients in food for the nourishment needed for growth, energy and immunity.

here are a few simple tips that can ensure your child is getting the nutrition they need.

Nutrition for kids1. Fill the fridge and pantry with nutritious snacks such as:

Fruit (organic): such as apples, pears, oranges, mandarins, grapes or bananas; organic raisins or dates

Balance fruit with nuts: almonds, brazil, cashew, walnuts or other unsalted, unroasted raw nuts – not peanuts

Good quality Biodynamic yoghurt: ¼ cup maximum mixed with frozen berries and mixed seeds

Cheese with rice crackers: 30g cheese maximum and plain unflavoured crackers (flavouring contains MsG – e621)

Veggie sticks: carrots, celery, capsicum, broccoli florets, mushroom, and dips such as hummus, tzatziki, guacamole and salsa

2. Limit treats high in sugar and artificial ingredients.

avoid artificial sweeteners such as aspartame1 (e950 - e955), caffeine (including guarana) in soft drinks, energy drinks and chocolates, wheat and processed foods laced with chemicals such as colourings and preservatives2.

1 Aspartame: (sweetener) synthetic, artificial sweetener; Used in sugar free & diet soft drinks and foods, chewing gum, confectionary; protein bars & powders2 Food additives are linked with hyperactive behaviour in children

4 Aromatherapy essential oils to have in the homeimagine being able to reduce stress, improve sleeping habits, calm a teething child or soothe cuts and grazes. By simply using a few essential oils correctly, you can provide a simple yet highly effective means of treating a range of conditions, both physical and emotional.

“essential oils” are natural oil extracts specially selected from a particular part of the plant – for example Mandarin comes from the fruit peel and lavender from the whole plant. these oils have been used for thousands of years dating back to when egyptian mummies were prepared with Myrrh, sandalwood and Cedarwood.

aromatheraphy in the home

essential oils have a range of benefits from relaxation, treating ailments, healing both physically and psychologically, and maintaining optimal well-being. When it comes to using essential oils, it is important to know how to use them correctly, as they can have adverse effects, whilst also remembering that they can work on an emotional, physical and mental level.

Can we use these on children?

dealing with children can be challenging and using aromatherapy can have many benefits. When using essential oils on children it is important to remember that they do have a heightened sense of smell and can also have sensitive skin. in this situation less usually means more. a good example of this is the use of essential oils in an oil burner, whilst 8-12 drops is the standard amount suggested for adults, small children could actually be over-stimulated by this same dosage.

here are some safe essential oils that can be used for children:

Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)

if you only get one essential oil, lavender is the one to get. lavender has a long history and is credited with being the first oil to be studied by scientists. the chemical constituents that are found in this essential oil have a number of benefits.

lavender can help calm emotions, aid with sleeping problems, soothe and act as an antiseptic for cuts, grazes and insect bites, help relieve pain and assist in the healing of skin conditions. For children, lavender essential oil can help with temper tantrums, teething, growing pains, overtired reactions, insect bites, heat rash, nappy rash, wind burn and sunburn. the perfect oil for Mums!!

Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)

roman Chamomile is one of the best calming and soothing oils for both adults and children. this essential oil is used widely by many aromatherapists when dealing with skin conditions in children, such as rash, dermatitis, eczema and wound care. it can also be used for digestive issues and to calm the emotions. For parents these essential oils can really help with calming nerves and emotions, which can sometimes become a little ‘frayed’ with the challenges that children bring. Chamomile also has properties that help to soothe some allergic reactions making it handy for little situations that flare up.

remember that with severe allergic reactions, always seek medical advice.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca althernifolia)

tea tree is another essential oil with multiple uses. it is a powerful antiseptic, antiviral, and antibacterial oil which makes it a great cleaning and disinfectant natural product. it is a great alternatively to harsh chemical products that can be used with cleaning surfaces and toys, (make sure that you test it out on the surface of toys first).

during the flu season, a couple of drops on a tissue can really help with decongesting the sinuses and help with chesty colds. tea tree can be drying to the skin, so when using on children, use small amounts that have been diluted in a cold-pressed carry oil.

How to use these oils.

there are many different ways that you can safely use essential oils around children. depending on the age, a drop or two on a tissue can help with runny noses and with sleeping, whilst two drops in a bath can help with aches and pains. there is no need to use essential oils directly on the skin as this can cause a reaction, so just have cold-pressed oil (sweet almond, macadamia, apricot kernel) in the cupboard and put no more that one drop of essential oil into this on a tablespoon of cold-pressed oil. rub this gently into the skin, after first testing on the inside of the elbow that there are no reactions.

top tip! Children love different smells and love playing around, why not make up some fragrant play dough. add some colour and a couple of drops of different essential oils to really give them a sensory experience!

Preventative First Aid

as a Mum, you will know how children’s symptoms are often very quick to come to the surface. one minute they’re fine, the next they are fighting a virus. the three main areas of preventative maintenance with children are:

1. Rest & Sleep – it is suggested that children must have approximately 10 hours sleep per night to accommodate their growing requirements. it’s always a good idea to include rest periods throughout the day i.e. with a good book or sedentary games like lego and card games during each day.

2. Water & Food – whole and natural foods are what growing bodies require to reach their expected potential (growing a vegetable garden with your children is a great activity for all the family). their water intake must be continual throughout the day – when a child is thirsty then dehydration of the cells has already occurred inhibiting absorption of nutrients.

lemon – a must have in your first aid kit.

3. Cuddles and Laughter – Bonding between parent and child is very important, children not only learn through play but their moods and needs are also balanced. as we know ourselves, cuddles are also a method of pain relief –so essential for after a fall over!

How Lemon can help

Many of the ‘old wives tales’ have been verified by the brilliance of scientific measuring over the last 15 years. and the humble leMoN is one of the greatest examples of a must-have first aid remedy in your house.

How you can utilise a LEMON:

1. As a decongestant especially for upper respiratory mucous – ¼ - ½ lemon in 50mls of water

2. To soothe a dry cough especially at night – squeeze no less than 5 drops of lemon juice directly into the mouth

3. For a dry cough throughout the day – ½ lemon with ¼ teaspoon of organic honey in warm water

4. To calm an upset stomach – ¼ - ½ lemon in 50mls of water and/or aid in easing hardened stools – ¼ - ½ lemon in 50mls of water daily

5. Use with Ginger in 250mls of water for travel sickness – sip on the mix throughout the journey

6. To promote one’s appetite – great especially at night when children’s bodies are tired-good squeeze of lemon in 30mls of water

7. Nose bleeds – as the bioflavonoids, Vit p, strengthens blood vessels – ¼ - ½ lemon in 50mls of water

8. To assist in dissipating worms – ¼ - ½ lemon in 50mls of water every 4 hours for 3 days

9. Vaginitis – irritation of the vaginal wall is common in girls aged 2-5yrs as they learn how to wipe post voiding – good squeeze of lemon in 30mls of water

10. Natural disinfectant – to minimise frequent infections and as it’s a whole food, most children will not react to it when it touches their skin

NB if your child has serious symptoms which worsen in the first 36-72 hours then contact your Health Practitioner Immediately for further individual care.

if done correctly, a massage is a fantastic way for you to nurture and bond with your baby. studies have shown that soothing hand movements stimulate the production of oxytocin, the hormone that relieves stress and produces a loving feeling. Baby massage has many benefits for both full term and premature babies. Babies who receive regular loving touch:

• Aremorerelaxed and cry less

• Gainweighteasily

• Sleepbetter

• Havelesstrouble with tummy upsets e.g. infantile colic

• Haveenhanced immune function

What you need:

Massage oil or cream. to help your hands glide over baby’s delicate skin and to avoid any irritation, use a good quality oil or cream, and make sure the ingredients are listed on the label.

the joys of baby massage

Jojoba oil is hypoallergenic and very suitable for baby massage. it is absorbed well, and doesn’t need to be washed off. also, most health food shops have ranges of organic baby oils and creams that would work well.

Soft towels.

Clothes and nappy for dressing baby after massage.

Select the right time and environment.

pick a time between feeds, when baby is alert and calm. Just after a bath or before bedtime is ideal. ensure that you create a relaxing environment for baby. the room temperature should be warm and draught free. you might choose to sit on the floor, bed or sofa, but ensure there is a folded sheet, blanket or towel beneath your baby. this is the perfect bonding session, so ensure that there are no distractions in the room.

Use correct technique.

utilising the correct massage technique is crucial to creating a safe and enjoyable massage for your baby.

Create a routine so that your baby becomes familiar and comfortable with “massage time”. start with the legs and ankles, working your way up to the chest and back, and then face and neck. ensure that you massage gently and that your strokes are slow and flowing. For the arms and legs, ensure that you support the wrist or ankle with one hand. For the tummy, ensure you go in a circular, clockwise motion. read the visual and vocal cues your baby is giving you. if your baby starts to fall asleep or get upset, that is a sign that the massage should stop.

using good quality products and techniques will ensure that baby massage is a joyful and nurturing experience for both baby and parent.

From body discomforts and lack of energy to emotional imbalance and learning troubles, children can face a lot of difficulties as they develop. if you’re concerned about any of these issues, kinesiology can offer a way to get to the core of your child’s problems.

What is kinesiology?

also known as human kinetics, kinesiology is the study of movement. More specifically, it is a form of therapy that involves monitoring the muscles to find unresolved stress. Muscles retain stress when we don’t learn to adapt, and through muscle monitoring, kinesiologists are able to assess what is causing imbalances in a person’s wellbeing.

kinesiologists may be able to help treat a wide range of health problems, including:

• Emotionalproblems

• Learningand behavioural difficulties

• Stress

• Muscledisorders

• Nutritiondeficiency

kinesiology for kids

How does kinesiology work?

kinesiology therapy works to stimulate the dormant energy in a person’s body. this helps to release the potential that is untapped in the body. to do this, kinesiologists use a wide range of methods to help alleviate tension including:

• Emotionalrelease

• Acupressure

• Nutritionaladvice

• Massage

• FlowerEssences

• Homoeopathics

How can children benefit from it?

the gentle approach of kinesiology makes it suitable for children of all ages. kinesiology offers a great way to tap into what your child may be trying to communicate to you, particularly at an early age, when children can’t speak properly yet. these can be issues from:

• Concentrationatschool

• Bedwetting

• Behaviouralproblems

• Sufferinganxietyordepression

• Learningdifficulties.

kinesiology is also great for babies with problems including:

• Teething

• Allergy

Medical studies have shown certain ‘super foods’ can help boost a child’s brain growth — plus improve brain function, memory, mood, and concentration. these 7 brain foods will help your child get the most out of their day.

Eggs

eggs are a great source of protein and choline, making them a delectable and essential brain food for kids and adults alike. protein helps keep your brain alert for longer, and assists your brain cells build networks and improve memory function.

Whole grains

Whole grains are unprocessed grains providing more dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals than processed or refined grains. additionally, whole grains are complex carbohydrates, so your kid’s bodies will digest them more slowly, providing sustained energy. Vitamin B is primarily obtained from whole grains and is essential to proper brain and nerve function. Whole grain foods include whole grain cereals, whole wheat bread and oatmeal.

Fish

Fish is universally accepted as a brain food. studies have shown that children who consume fish frequently have a tendency to perform better in school. Fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which assist in good brain function and general overall health.

Walnuts

Many nuts contain high levels of dha, an omega-3 fatty acid essential for development of brain cells. Walnuts are a particularly good choice as they are high in protein, easy to digest and very versatile as they can be used in sweet and savoury dishes or simply eaten as a snack. Walnuts even resemble little brains so you’ll be able to convince your child of their special powers!

Bananas

Bananas are a great source of fibre, B vitamins, minerals and complex carbohydrate.

When digested in the body, complex carbohydrates release energy slowly, making children more mentally alert throughout the day and keeping them feeling fuller for longer, preventing those unhealthy sweet cravings. this makes bananas an essential snack or breakfast food.

Yoghurt

adding yoghurt to your child’s diet can assist in their alertness and digestion, as well as keeping your child feeling full for longer. yogurt is rich in calcium, protein and healthy gut bacteria (probiotics) and has a low glycaemic index, which is good news for blood sugar balance, preventing headaches and brain fag. Make sure you choose low-sugar yoghurt or better still, natural yoghurt with honey or maple syrup to sweeten it.

there are certain vitamins and minerals essential for the growing body. From Vitamin a & C to iron, they assist in the protection and proper functioning of your child. here are the top five that you need to know – and incorporate – in your child’s diet.

Iron

iron is necessary for growth and development and making red blood cells. it’s important for making haemoglobin (oxygen-carrying red pigment in blood) and myoglobin (pigment that stores oxygen in muscles). For the first six months of life, breast milk is sufficient enough to provide iron, but afterwards, it’s important to include iron-containing foods – cereals, green vegetables and meat – in your child’s diet. lack of iron can cause anaemia, which manifests into fatigue and irritability.

Calcium

Calcium is known for building strong bones and teeth, but also helps healthy nerve and muscle function and the conversion of food into energy. studies have shown that optimal calcium intake during childhood and adolescence is preventative against osteoporosis in women later in life.

Vitamins and minerals vital for your child

Good sources of calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt, tofu, tinned salmon (with bones) and calcium-fortified orange juice. Vitamin d is essential for proper absorption of calcium. Children can make adequate vitamin d with sunlight exposure during the safer early morning hours.

Essential fatty acids

essential fatty acids are essential for many bodily functions and must be obtained from the diet. they help build cells and immunity, develop and regulate the brain and nervous system, strengthen the cardiovascular system and keep the blood healthy. there are two types that are vital for growing kids: omega-3 and omega-6. you can find omega-3s in walnuts, linseeds, chia seeds, soybean, eggs and tofu as well as oily fish. omega-3 is also known as epa and dha. For omega-6, using sunflower or olive oil on salads or in your cooking provides the daily recommended dosage. avoid saturated and trans fats as these contribute to weight gain and chronic diseases.

Vitamin CVitamin C is vital for your growing child as it helps the body defend against infections by strengthening the immune system and keeps bones and tissues healthy and strong. Vitamin C also helps form and repair red blood cells. Good sources include capsicum, kiwi fruit and broccoli. Foods containing Vitamin C enhances iron absorption in the body, especially iron from vegetarian sources.

Vitamin A

Generally found in eggs, dark green and orange vegetables, vitamin a plays an important role in maintaining healthy vision and immune function. it also helps the growth and repair of heart, lungs, kidneys and other organs and promotes healthy hair, nails and skin.

testiMoNial“ if you’re looking for a way to educate yourself with absolute flexibility and support, then aias is the way to go!”

"i am an online student at aias studying for an advanced diploma in Naturopathy part-time. i am also a Mum of 3 children – a one year old, three year old and almost five year old. My eldest is at school, my middle child is at day-care one day per week and my youngest is home full time. studying alongside being a full-time Mum is challenging but incredibly rewarding at the same time.

i chose aias because i wanted flexibility and support and needed to know that others had had success with my chosen provider. studying online allows me to study when and where i want. i love the online forums and find them super easy to navigate, and the lessons are very well written and work well in conjunction with the textbooks.

i love studying, and it is all the more important to me knowing that i have an example to set for my kids. i hope to eventually work independently as a Naturopath in my own practice. if you’re looking for a way to educate yourself with absolute flexibility and support, then aias is the way to go!"

Jessica Anderson advanced diploma of Naturopathy

i don't even attempt to study whilst the children are with me! i don’t feel like i’m being fair and it doesn't sink in anyway! as soon as they go to bed at night i am straight into my study; revising my notes, making new notes, answering revision questions and reading text books. on the weekends my husband will usually take the children to the park for a couple of hours to give me a good solid amount of time in which to study. on a good week i get around 15 hours maximum of dedicated study time, so i have to make them count!!
