Introduction

Psychologist Miriam Galindo works with children and families, in particular helping to navigate the family court system. Dr. Miriam Galindo serves as an approved child custody evaluator in divorce cases.

The process of being evaluated for custody can be very stressful for many parents. Since a lot is riding on it, a parent will usually be concerned about making the best possible impression. When preparing to be evaluated, there are a number of things to keep in mind.

Listen closely to your lawyer and follow the advice you are given. Attorneys understand the process and are there to help achieve the best possible outcome.

Additionally, be honest throughout the process. Evaluators are trained to determine whether a person is being truthful. Failing to tell the truth can have a negative effect on the final outcome of the legal proceedings.

Finally, understand that the evaluator’s job is not to be a counselor but to be as objective as possible during the process. Therefore, try to stick to issues that are directly related to parenting. Getting off-topic and telling the evaluator why your ex was a bad spouse, for example, is not a good idea, and can give the impression that you might be unwilling to cooperate going forward.
