King Kamehameha I V and Queen Dowager Emma always helduppermost in their minds, the welfare of their people. Their crowningachievement was the Queen s Hospital

King Lunalilo lift his large landed estate to the ''poor, destituteand tnfirm people of Hawaiian blood" - Lunalilo Home.

King David Kalakaua catalyzed the Hawaiian culturalrenaissance of the last quarter of the 19th century. His impact is stdlfelt today, for the inspiration for Hawai i' s present-day culturalresurgence can be traced to his reign. His active pursuit of the ancientchants was perhaps the most important factor tn the revival andperpetuation of the oli and the hula.

Hawaiian music was the chief benefietary of this dynamic culturallife, for it encouraged aspinng Stngers and composers, instrumentalistsand dancers, chanters and poets.

While he urged the preservation of Hawaiian traditions, he alsoencouraged the adaptation ofnew art forms introducedfrom the West.The best examples are: the "ukulele he promoted as a Hawatianinstrument and the hula ku 't". "

Equally tnterested in the welfare of the people, Queen ConsortKapiolani later willed her fortune to found and maintain a maternityhome, namely Kapiolani Children s Hospital

Leleiohoku and Pnncess Likelike, brother and sister of KtngKalakaua, w~re accomplished musicians and composers. Their com­positions still live on.

Queen Ltli 'uokalani was the most accomplished musician andcomposer of all her family. Two beautiful songs which live today inworld affection: ''Aloha (k" and "The Queen sPrayer. "

She spent her later years worktng for the welfare of her people.Her large estate was left for the care and protection of Hawatianorphans: Queen Ltli'uokalani Chtldren s Center-Ltli'uokalani Trust.

Pnnce Kuhio Kalamanaole Ptikoi, better known as Prince Cupid,was elected delegate to Congress. He won the hearts of his Congress­men, and tn 1920, the Hawatian Rehabilitation Btll, known as "TheHawatian Homes Commission Act'~ was passed. He also organizedthe HaWaiian Civic Club.

Captain Schantz was born in Long Bach, California, the sonof RAD:\il Curtiss W. hantz (DC) :\. and CatherineMclellan Schantz. After graduation from Valley Forge :'\lilitaryAcademy, he accepted a Presidential appointment to the nitedStates :-laval Academy, and was commissioned with the class of1963. He reported immediately to sea, serving in U S Conway(D[).507) until detached to attend the :\aval Destroyer School.Following Destroyer School, he reponed to SS Harold J.ElIi on (00- M) as Engineer Officer. In April 1967, afterwarfare training at :\aval Amphibious Base. Coronado. herelieved as Officer in harge of YRBM-18, a mobile support bas<:for river patrol in this capacity, which included action during the1968 Tet Offehsive, he was decorated with the Legion of Meritand Combat "V".

Following service in Southeast Asia, he reported to Head­quarters, Commander in Chid, Allied Forces Southern Europein :-laples, Italy, for duty on his staff. He returned to sea as Opera­tion Officer in Plymouth Rock (LSD·29) until August197+, when he was appointed to Flag Secreta')' and Aide toCommander, ~aval Forces Caribbean. He then served as Execu­tive Officer of USS Truett (FF-I095) while that ship deployed as aunit 01 :\ATO' tanding ~aval Force. Al1antic. Duty as astudent at the Armed Forces Staff College was then followed bya ignment a head of the Politico-:'\Iilitary Policy Section on thetaff of Commander in Chid, l'. . :\3\'al Forces Europe. in

London. England. In February 19 I. Captam hantz assumedcommand of L' Rathbume (FF-1057l in Pearl Harbor,Hawaii. He relinquished command two month later whenhospitalized for surgery. Prior to reponing to Badger. he servedas urface Anti-submarine \\'arfare Officer on the staff ofCommander in Chid L'nited States Pacific Fleet.

In addition to the Legion of :'\lerit. Captain hantz' decora­tions in lude the :'\leritorious rvice :'\ledaL the :\a,'YCommendation :'>Iedal with Gold tar. the Combat AClio~Ribbon. and the :\avy Cnit Commendation. On behalf of the people of the County of Hawaii, it gives mepleasure to welcome everyone with a very warm aloha to the 22ndAnnual Merrie Monarch Festival. Special greetings are extendedto those of you who have traveled from other islands and themainland to join us in this annual celebration.

We are honored tha t Hi 10 has become the home of th i smagnificent display of Hawaiian dance and music. Through theyears we have seen this merry and festive event grow to be themain Hawaiian cultural program statewide. The authors of thisFestival are to be commended and congratulated for theirextraord i nary effor ts wh ich have made thi s spectacular pageantpossible.

For the next few days we will be able to see and enjoy theMiss Hula, Auwana and Kahiko competitions. We will be treated tothe sounds of old Hawaiian chants, the beat of the pahu, melodicHawaiian voices, and the strum of guitars by the participants inthese contests. The superior abilities and accomplishments ofall the halaus will be demonstrated as they take part in thiscultural performance.

We wish the best of luck to everyone who is participating inthis year's festivities. May this Merrie Monarch Festival proveto be the most successful and memorable of all.
