The Celebrations Start…

The United Nations International School is this year celebrating its 25th year of providing educational excellence in Vietnam!

It opened its doors for the first time on September 19, 1988 for the start of its very first year… and this coming week we start our celebrations.

And what better way than to start with our students, and our unique connection to the United Nations?

From Elementary School through to High School all our students will this week find their attention focused on the upcoming United Nations International Day of Peace (September 21) through exploration in the curriculum, through assemblies and through music and art projects. See page 7 for details.

We look forward to sharing with you our Week of Peace in pictures in next week’s Tin Tuc.

We are planning to celebrate teaching and learning all year long and our very special partnerships and connections to the United Nations and our host country, Vietnam.

And our students will be working together in the coming weeks, building from our UN Peace Day celebrations, towards our central UN Day on October 23 when we will join together as an entire community to officially launch our 25th year and celebrate the 65 nations represented in our 1000 students this year.

In addition to the UN Peace Day celebrations we will also start to connect our current students with our alumni community on the ‘first day of school – September 19’ when one of our students, whose birthday falls on that day, will draw the winner from our Alumni “Get in Touch” initiative which has seen more than 100 of our alumni reconnect with the school in just a few short weeks. Thanks to support from Vietnam Airlines for their generous support of our alumni initiative.

We have an exciting year ahead and plenty to celebrate, and our wonderful community of parent volunteers, the School Community Organisation, will kick off the parties and start selling tickets next week for the first Birthday Party!

I look forward to seeing you all there on September 28 at the Press Club for the Parent Faculty Party with the birthday theme of “Party Like You Were 25 Again!” – see page 13 for details.

For a full overview of the year ahead please see the Notes from the Advancement Office below who will be coordinating the many different activities that our community is planning in this historic year.

Respectfully,

Dr. Chip Barder, Head of School

Notes from the Board of Directors

The Board of Directors held its annual retreat last weekend. The retreat provides time at the beginning of the school year for the volunteer Board members to get to know each other and discuss priorities for the coming year. As you can see in the picture, we also began celebrating the School’s 25th anniversary by sharing a birthday cake at tea time. Sarah Garner, Board Chair [email protected]

Notes from the Advancement Office

HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY UNIS HANOI On 19th September 1988 UNIS Hanoi opened its doors for the first time on the campus of the Hanoi Amsterdam School with 12 students under the leadership of Head of School Dr Alice Winner. Today we have nearly 1012 students from 65 nationalities with more than 40 mother tongues spoken and this year is the 25th Year that UNIS Hanoi has been striving for excellence with its students and their families. This week we celebrate the historic moment of UNIS Hanoi opening its doors for the first time and start our year of celebrations for our 25th Year with a special focus on the UN International Peace Day from Elementary through to High School. (see page 7) And this will be a year of celebrations, focusing primarily on teaching and learning but of course uniting themes and events that are all part of our annual programme under the 25th Anniversary banner and working towards our vision that “our learning community will be an inspirational role model for a better world.” Campus Vision Work will continue on the Campus Vision Plan started last year with Perkins Eastman to set a legacy for the next 25

years.

Green Initiative Our Green Grid, formulated last year, will be put into effect touching on all aspects of our school and community life, promoting and empowering sustainability through curriculum and operations.

Service Learning The School’s dedication to Service Learning is central to every child’s educational experience at UNIS Hanoi and often unlocks extraordinary learning and development for our students. This year we give it a special focus.

Scholarship Roadshow In October we will go out into the wider Hanoi community visiting schools to ensure our scholarship programme reaches those that most need it as we open for applications for the 13-14 school year.

The Yearbook A wonderful review of the 25th Anniversary year in glorious colour, this year, for the first time, created by our community for our community as we build it together.

UNIS Hanoi Website – Launch 2013 We are building a dynamic new website to reflect the needs of our school, our community and our growing communication needs.

Mosaic Project Inspired by one of our students this creative birthday project will help build our student community with our alumni association, bring some student art and colour to our Ciputra Campus and start a new tradition for the next 25 years!

Notes from the Advancement Office

AND SOME DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES – Birthdays are also about parties! Parent Faculty Party – September 28

Kicking off the festivities at the Hanoi Press Club – Party Like You Were 25 Again! See page 13

UN Day – October 23 Building from Peace Day to a highlight of the school year when we join with our entire community to celebrate our diversity, our unity and above all our special connection to the United Nations. (Please note that this will be a full day of school and not the half day published in the calendar.)

Spring Fair – March 16 Our community’s chance to celebrate together and have fun at our traditional School Community Organisation event.

The Birthday Ball – April 13 A night to remember and create a legacy gift from our community with a fundraising gala event.

Graduation Ceremony – May 27 A celebration of education as the Class of 2013 graduate and close out one era and embrace the next.

Alumni Reunions – 7 Global Birthday Parties Connecting with our world wide alumni family and building our global community is an important goal for us and this year we host reunions to reach out to alumni in Kuala Lumpur, London, Hanoi, San Francisco, Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo.

There are many projects involving many members of our community and we warmly encourage you to get involved. For any questions about any of the projects or events, please contact Emma Silva, Director of Advancement: [email protected]

GOALS NOT EVENTS GUIDING THE YEAR... 1. Record, celebrate and share UNIS Hanoi's history and its place in Vietnam's history, especially in connection to the work of the UN. 2. Recognize, celebrate and involve all members of our diverse UNIS Hanoi community as leaders in our institution's history and its future. 3. Confirm, celebrate and demonstrate UNIS Hanoi's position as leaders in education in Vietnam and as a centre of excellence in international schools for the future.

IT DOESN’T ADD UP!

1988+25=2013! For those of you that are wondering why we are celebrating September 19, 2012… It is because the 1988-1989 School Year was the first operational year for UNIS Hanoi, and so the 2012-2013 School Year is the 25th Year that UNIS Hanoi has been striving for student excellence in Vietnam.

Dear Parents, EAL Information Evening We were delighted with the turn out for the ES EAL Evening on 12 September. This year we offered the presentation in Korean, Vietnamese and English using some staff members to translate from English into Vietnamese. Staff and parents were particularly impressed by and grateful to G12 student Na Yeong Yang who skillfully and confidently translated all the information into Korean for a group of 30 parents. We hope to extend these translation services to other events and information sessions this year. Parent Consultation Sign Up All parents will have received the email advice regarding the sign up process for the upcoming Parent/ Teacher Consultation session on Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 October. I hope the training session on Thursday 13 September proved helpful to those able to attend as the sign up opened at 0700 on Friday 14 September. We look forward to welcoming everyone to these very important one to one discussions furthering the home school partnership between parents and teachers. Class Parents My first meeting with the new Class Parents took place on Thursday morning in conjunction with the Advancement Office. I am really looking forward to working closely with the ECC and ES Chairs and Vice Chairs of the SCO; we plan to meet fortnightly to discuss questions and ideas raised in the parent community. The Class Parents are now ready to start organizing social events for the class and grade level parents as part of their new role. I hope to meet periodically with this whole group in order to support them in whatever way I can and I thank them sincerely for volunteering to give their time and effort to this vital aspect of UNIS community life. Student Council The new look Student Council was launched during assembly this week by Ms Andrea and Ms Bronwyn, the Student Council Teacher Coordinators. All students in Grades 3 to 5 are invited to stand for election for two representative positions per class. If your child is interested in standing for election, please do support them at home as they plan their speech/presentation. I see this as a very important means of working in partnership with the students to help improve the school through listening to their ideas, suggestions and concerns and helping them take action and seek solutions. Grade 5 School Camp The Grade 5 staff and students are eagerly anticipating their few days away at school camp next week. We wish them a very happy and successful trip and look forward to sharing their stories on their return. Wishing everyone a good (and perhaps slightly cooler) weekend.

Kind regards, Carole Denny, Elementary School Principal [email protected]

Managing Tablets at Home

One of the biggest adjustments to a technology-rich learning environment is for the parents. Every year we field questions about the use of technology and tablets at home and how best to manage this. Come join me in the Library Projection Room at 18:30 on Tuesday September 18th as I lead a discussion around concerns and ideas for managing the use of tablets in the home. This will be similar to the discussion that was held with at the Middle School Counselor’s Coffee Morning on Friday. I hope to have a few students who are able to stay and share their own experiences but this may not be possible due to the time in the evening. If you have questions and concerns or (even better!) if you have some strategies that you have successfully implemented in your own house, please join me this Tuesday evening! Clint Hamada, MSHS Technology Facilitator [email protected]

Peace Day Celebration at UNIS Hanoi

Dear ES Families, The focus for our assemblies next week will be the International Day of Peace which falls on the 21st September. During our ECC assembly on Tuesday and our Grades 1-5 assembly on Wednesday we will look at what peace means to us. As a symbolic gesture of our unity for peace in the world, we would like all students to wear white on the day of their assembly. As a follow up all the Elementary students will draw around their hands on white or blue paper and illustrate/write what peace means to them. Their hands will then decorate a large white sphere which be suspended in the Centre for the Arts as an arts installation representing world peace. This day coincides with our birthday celebrations of the very first day that UNIS Hanoi began 25 years ago. This assembly will not only celebrate International Day of Peace but also resonate with the strong mission we have for developing world citizens who recognize and accept their responsibility as stewards for their future world. Please help us to remind your child to wear white and chat over the weekend about what peace means to them. Some useful websites you may want to explore together are: http://www.internationaldayofpeace.org/

MAP Testing Information

Grade 3-5 Students Finish MAP Testing Our students in grades 3-5 have completed their fall MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests. The students’ reaction to the test was very positive – students have been committed and enthusiastic. Obviously the messages that students received from parents and teachers about the test were very positive – thank you parents for your support with this. Next week our Middle School students will complete their MAP tests from Monday-Wednesday. The schedule can be found below. Once the Middle School students finish testing then we will close out the testing window, finish uploading all test results and begin creating the reports for teachers and parents. The MAP parent report will be sent home electronically following completion of these steps. As the MAP test is focused on growth and future student learning, we are happy to announce that our spring testing window for Elementary students will be in March 2012. Additionally our grade 3-9 students will take part in the International School’s Assessment (ISA) test in mid-October. This test will give us another piece of data to consider in supporting student learning. More details on the ISA will be sent out at the start of October. Moon Festival Celebration. Coming Soon!

TẾT TRUNG THU

In Vietnam, there is a special festival for children which comes at the time of the harvest moon called “Tet Trung Thu”. Tet Trung Thu falls on the 15th of August according to the Lunar Calendar, therefore it is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival. This year, Tet Trung Thu is on Sunday, September 30th, 2012. The festival is awaited with great eagerness by children all over Vietnam. On this special day, children are honoured; they are reminded to be good citizens and to show love and respect for one another, as well for their country. They receive presents and special treats from their parents and relatives.

Prior to the festival, the streets are filled with a variety of brightly-coloured lanterns, balloons, masks, dragon heads, toys, and Moon cakes. On the night of the festival itself, children march through the streets playing cymbals and drums and holding lit lanterns. The lanterns are in the shapes of stars, rabbits, boats, dragons, etc… The Vietnamese children carry on this tradition by staging a parade every year in the streets, around the lakes or in their living areas. The dragon dance is often performed at this special time, as it is believed to invite festival spirits and bring good luck. There is a traditional cake called a Moon Cake on Tet Trung Thu. These cakes are made of sticky rice filled with such things as peanuts, lotus seeds, duck egg yolks, raisins, watermelon seeds, and green beans. The cakes are made in different shapes such as the moon, the earth, or even animals..etc… Across Vietnam, this is a night of singing, dancing and feasting as children and adults alike enjoy this colourful festival. When the festival is over the memories stay in the children’s hearts forever. They all aim to do their best for the year and look forward to the next Tet Trung Thu. At UNIS, we celebrate Tết Trung Thu on Friday September 28th at 9.50 with Tet Trung Thu assembly hosted by Grade 2, 4 and 5 Vietnamese students in the theatre. Students will also take part in the toy making workshop in the morning and Tet Trung Thu Party at the snack time. Teachers and students are encouraged to wear “ÁO DÀI - Vietnamese traditional dress” on the day.

“TẾT TRUNG THU RẤT VUI!”

By Ms. Dung Tran Kim- Elementary Vietnamese Teacher

We are a group of high school students in the Community Wind Turbine Project. Our goal is to learn how to build wind

turbines and share that knowledge with local Vietnamese schools. This year we plan on building a functioning 3 meter wind turbine for a local Vietnamese local school. This will be able to power their light supply. These schools cannot even afford to use lights! Of course fans in the summer and heating in the winter is too expensive. Once we have gotten more practice building and installing the first turbine, we hope to be able to power schools one turbine a year. Besides supplying schools with electricity, we can start conserving limited resources and start living more sustainably. Everyone has their own specific and important roles in the project. We have engineers, community relations, videographers, and you the UNIS community. Your role can be just as important as theirs! We will have various fundraising opportunities, not only this year but in years to come. The first is to host Turbine Tuesdays where T-shirts and bumper stickers will be for sale in front of the canteen from 11:35 -12:15. We are also hoping to sell coffee cups and buttons with our logo.

Look out for the sausage sizzles on Oct 16th and February 26th .

Turbine Tuesday’s

T-Shirt Sales Dates

We are looking for other folks that are interested in the project and all are welcome at our Tuesday afterschool meetings from 3:30-5:00 in B6 120.

Just let us know you’re coming by emailing [email protected]

We believe in this cause and we hope you will too!

College Visits, UNIS Hanoi

17 - 28 September 2012

Mark your lunch time to begin to explore your choices for universities around the world. Throughout the year, but more so in the first semester, representatives from universities/colleges will come to UNIS Hanoi to meet with interested students. Please take advantage of this great opportunity to meet with someone from their Admissions Office. Most of the time the info sessions will be scheduled at lunch time at the Library and you can bring your lunch. At the beginning of the year, most of the representatives are from American Institutions, later in the year , British, Canadian, Australian institutions will come. These representatives are coming to UNIS Hanoi because they are interested in international students. Be prepared with questions. “ I don’t know what I want to study, what should I do?”/ “What score do I need?”/ “Do you have my major?”/ “Do you have financial aids for international students?”/ “ Do you have scholarship?”… Find out as much as you can about the college before you visit. Don’t focus on name schools only, there are excellent smaller colleges that will be a better fit for you.

Phoenix Sports – What’s Happening

Last Saturday saw the first version of “Saturday Basketball” action for the UNIS MS Boys. Teams from Concordia International School, Hanoi International School and Singapore International School brought teams to the UNIS Sports Centre to engage in some “friendly” basketball games. For most teams it was their first games of the season, but that didn’t stop the action from being competitive and high-spirited. The UNIS Blue and UNIS White teams will be playing an inter-squad game this Saturday morning at 9am. Yesterday, the UNIS MS Girls Basketball program played their second game of the season. Singapore International School was the opponent. It was a tight affair, but in the end, the Phoenix girls came out on top by a score of 12-8. That makes it two wins out of two for the girls, but more importantly, they continue to improve with each practice and are being great representatives of the school. Well done! This coming Monday will see three high school volleyball matches taking place after school. All matches will begin at approximately 4pm, so come on out to support our teams. The matches are as follows: UNIS MRISA Boys vs. HIS UNIS APAC Girls vs. HIS UNIS APAC Boys vs. Local Team

On Thursday, September 20th, the following Middle School basketball games will be happening in the Sports Center, starting at 4pm: UNIS MRISA Girls vs. Concordia Boys UNIS Blue-White Girls vs. Concordia Girls

Thank you to all of the UNIS coaches for their hard work and commitment! GO PHOENIX!!!

APAC Girls Volleyball

Last week the APAC girls volleyball team had a couple of matches to kick of the season's games. The girls played their first match against HIS and for the first game of the season it was good to see some nice rallies back and forth. The UNIS team came out ahead to win their first match of the season. The girls were also fortunate to have another match on Friday. They played a Vietnamese girls academy who brought a strong squad. Although the girls lost in straight sets, they set goals and worked on their team play. The match gave our UNIS players an opportunity to play a team with APAC level skills and therefore be better prepared for the APAC tournament coming up in late October. The girls next match is Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 at 4:00pm. Please come out and support the players. Coaches Gay and Kraetzer

2012-13 MRISA Arts Festival

It’s time for students and parents to start thinking about this year’s MRISA Arts Festival which is being hosted by the International School Ho Chi Minh City from January 16-20, 2013.

Teachers from the different schools and invited guests will run a series of workshops exploring components of the Visual and Performing Arts. The program is full and varied, with a mixture of Specialist Workshops in Visual Arts, Music and Drama from which students make 2 choices. Previous MRISA workshops have included Stomp, Mask Dancing, Sword Fighting, Abstract Sculptures, Mural Painting, Jewellery Making, Salsa Dancing, Electronic Music and Comic Life. In addition, there will be Cultural Workshops which may take place off campus. Specialist Workshops will run for three 1.5 hour sessions over three days, and will give students the chance to experience an in-depth creative task. Cultural Workshops and Mass Workshops involving all participating students will take place for 3 hours a day filled with interesting and engaging Arts and Cultural activities. Many of these workshops will be run by artists and crafts people with teachers supervising. We encourage students to try new activities and be risk takers! There will also be performances from local artists, as well as social events to allow the students to mix with pupils from other schools, and make new friends. At the end of the festival there will be an Exhibition Evening, when students are invited to share the work they have been involved in during this event, with an audience from the host community. This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to interact, learn and experience the Arts in a unique and exciting way. Each school is permitted to take up to 15 students to the Arts Festival. The event is open to all students from Grades 6 – 12. Two UNIS teachers (Sara Quigley and Luke DallaGrana) will work with our students in preparation for the event and will accompany them to Ho Chi Minh City. To be considered for a place at the 2012-13 MRISA Arts Festival, a permission form needs to be collected from and returned back to the Activities Office (B7-Rm. 112). Forms were made available to students on the morning of September 14th. Participation will be on a first come, first served basis. Thank you for your interest in this opportunity. The ASA Bus Schedule

Dear Bus Parents, This has been the first week of our new ‘ASA session’ bus schedule where our Bus Office attempts to get students home after their activities. As a number of you have commented, Activity Buses run different schedules than the usual buses so we thought it necessary to make a few general observations so everyone understands what happens during these ‘Activity Sessions’. During Activity Sessions we send students home on three ‘waves’ of buses, departing school at the usual 3:35 time, followed by a 4:40 fleet (taking all ES Activity students) and then a final group of ‘last buses’ departing at 5:45 – Wednesday’s run a similar set of 3 departures, albeit at earlier times. To maintain an economical service in the afternoon it is our practice to combine students onto routes so the buses can run with as many students as possible. This invariably changes the travelling time of buses and can mean students are having longer journeys home. Since this was the first week for all students, even departures this week were a little protracted. We apologize for any inconvenience as the new routes become established, but hope you understand both the economic and environmental logic of our strategy. Please feel free to contact the bus office if you require any further information. Lai Chu Xuan, Logistics Officer [email protected]

Notes from the Nurses’ Office

Conjunctivitis Please be advised of the school’s policy on conjunctivitis (pink eye). If you suspect your child has conjunctivitis please seek medical advice. Symptoms of conjunctivitis are: Red eyes

Watery discharge

A yellow or green discharge common in bacterial infections

Feeling of grit or sand

Itchy eyes

Sensitivity to light

Swollen eyelids

Crusts that form on the eyelid overnight

School policy states that students must remain out of school until there are NO further symptoms of conjunctivitis, even if antibiotic eye drops have been started.

Fever If your child has a fever of 38.0 or higher, please keep them home from school. Children can return to school when they have been fever free, without medication (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen), for 24 hours. Vomiting/Diarrhea If your child has vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them home for 24 hours after last vomit/diarrhea episode. Head Lice Head lice have been reported in the ES. This is a gentle reminder that frequent inspections of your child's head & the continued diligence of parents will keep lice infestations at a minimum. UNIS recommends weekly inspections using the wet combing procedure, details of this treatment can be found below, with the full policy on the school portal. Wet combing campaigns have been very successful in treating and preventing re-infestations of lice. Wet combing consists of: Wash the hair in the normal way with ordinary shampoo.

Rinse out the shampoo and put on lots of ordinary conditioner.

Comb the hair with a normal comb to get rid of tangles.

When the hair is untangled switch to the detection comb, if you do not have a lice comb, UNIS will provide one for each family, please come by the nurse’s office.

Slot the teeth of the detection comb into the hair at the roots so it is touching the scalp.

Draw the detection comb through to the tips of the hair.

Make sure that all parts of the hair are combed by working around the head.

Check the comb for lice after each stroke by wiping on a towel or rinsing in a bowl of hot water.

After you have combed the whole head, rinse out the conditioner.

If head lice are found, wet combing should be repeated every 3 days for 2-3 weeks or until no lice are found for 3 consecutive combings. Weekly combing sessions should be carried out to prevent and/or detect any re-infestation. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact UNIS Hanoi Nurses’ Office at [email protected] .
