Course Description: This course offers the unique opportunity to experience a wide variety of sustainability applications in an array of natural and urban environments. The travel will first focus on Phoenix, known for its year-round warm temperatures and cultural diversity. There we will explore an innovative off-grid property, complete with organic farm and energy efficient building, and the famous Frank Lloyd Wright property Taliesen West. Then we are off to Arcosanti to be immersed in an urban sustainability laboratory in the Arizona desert where we will learn how they have integrated architecture with the natural environment. We will then visit ancient cliff dwellings near Flagstaff and meet with sustainability-focused students at Northern Arizona University and experience campus sustainability initiatives. We will also visit the Grand Canyon, and in addition to exploring the area, will meet with a local expert to learn about sustainability initiatives in the Grand Canyon park system. Finally, we spend the morning hiking in Sedona, famous for its stunning desert vistas. The pre- and post-departure content provides an overview of sustainability-related topics including economic, environmental, and social sustainability implications of food, energy, water, buildings, and natural resource use. Students engage in critical thinking about contemporary issues in sustainability, both domestic and international. The course will have some cultural and sustainability content specific to Arizona in the pre-departure content as well.
