Using sticks and echidna quills or spikes they painted pictures, painstakingly made up of thousands of dots, depicting hunting or food gathering with traditional Aboriginal symbols embedded.

Today, talented artists continue to depict the stories of their land, environment and lives in paintings and crafts. The dots represent a tribute to the ancient heritage and rich Indigenous history of the entire Northern Territory region – deemed one of the oldest living cultures in the world.

In traditional Western Desert art, this dot icon symbolises a camp site or meeting place. The first people of the Northern Territory gathered and held meetings in locations deemed spiritually significant. We are continuing this tradition of connecting through stories, education and entertainment in places of wonder and cultural significance.

TELLINg STORIES FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARSIndigenous Australians have been telling their fascinating stories for thousands of years. Without a written language the dot paintings were a way of visualising their Dreamtime stories.
