THE CITY #THECITY#
Timişoara is the regional capital of Banatprovince, the abundant agriculturalheartland of Romania, as reflected in thecity’s many restaurants. It is Romania’smost cosmopolitan city, owing to its liberalhistory and the diverse ethnicities thatmake up its population. Timişoara has alarge Hungarian population, as well asSerbs, Germans and Roma. It has beendubbed ‘the city of flowers’ in honour ofthe many parks which circle the city, but ismost recently, and affectionately, known toits inhabitants as ‘Primul Oraş Liber’ – thefirst free town – in reference to its part inthe revolution of 1989. It was here that aHungarian priest first spoke out against thedictator Ceauşescu, resulting in one of themost passionate revolutions in recentEuropean history. The city has aneasy-going Latin feel to it, with largesquares lined by coffee shops and cafes, and some fine architecture revealing thecity’s Hapsburg past. It was the first city inEurope to introduce horse-drawn trams in1869, and they are still here now – minusthe horses! Today, people are fastadjusting to the new democracy, with athriving city centre and new venturesopening all the time.
