Jobs in Muscat draw people from interiors

DEEBA [email protected]

MUSCAT: More jobs and better opportunities have made Mus-cat a favourable destination for people from interior regions, ac-cording to fresh graduates and HR managers in Muscat.

Jaber Al Ajmi, a media research-er at one of the companies in Mus-cat came to work in the capital in 2011, the decision to move to Mus-cat was not forced on him, but he was determined to live and work in Muscat after studying in Salalah and Nizwa for five years.

According to Al Ajmi, “People are coming to Muscat from every-where in the interiors, a lot of my friends have also moved to Mus-cat in search of more exposure, better jobs and career growth. Working in the interiors is fine, but Muscat is a different world for some of us from the interiors, there is a lot more to see and do here than back home.”

Economic migrationHe further said this trend of eco-nomic migration is not a new thing, but has been happening all over the world.

“People all over the world want to move to the top cities because of the centralisation of the compa-nies, so when we speak of Muscat,

all the public sector companies are in Muscat, the private sector companies’ headquarters are also here, so it is obvious that the avail-ability of jobs will be much more in the urban areas.”

Al Ajmi hails from Saham, near Sohar, which is the second fastest growing city after Muscat, but he still prefers to work in the capital because of the career growth op-portunitie s here.

Opportunities“Sohar is thriving with lots of op-portunities, but there is a lot more I can expect to learn by working in Muscat, you also get exposed to others cultures, so you learn. Besides I work in the media sec-tor and if I started in the interiors, I would probably not go too far in my career.”

He spent three years at the Sala-lah College of Applied Sciences (CAS) and two at the Nizwa CAS, but did not think of working in any of these cities, because of the lack of international exposure. Al Ajmi said he would love to go back to his hometown in Saham, but that will have to wait.

“I would go to Saham, but that

will be when I become an expert in whatever I am doing, I will eventually go there to share my knowledge with the new genera-tion there.”

Badriya Al Amri, from Sur in the Sharqiyah region, also spoke of a similar feel when choosing to move to Muscat after studying in the Sur University College.

“It is a little difficult to get jobs back in the interior regions be-cause there are not too many com-panies there, some of my friends got jobs there but I did not, plus I was also very ambitious and would not settle for working in the interior, because that would not help me go forward in my career.”

Al Amri has been working for a private company in Muscat for the last three years and is happy with the decision she made.

Exposure“Initially, it was a little tough, espe-cially with the sudden exposure to too many cultures and the way of working all at once, but I have ad-justed to this now and live in a fe-male hostel, which works for me.”

Said Al Saadi, advisor at the Ministry of Manpower, thinks

that although the economic mi-gration is taking place, it will hopefully reduce the large indus-trial investments made in the in-terior regions.

“Economic migrations are tak-ing place, but now we are better because the government is scat-tering the industrial area (devel-opment) everywhere, before it was only confined to Muscat, but now it is in many places in the interiors too, so we expect migra-tions to reduce,” Al Saadi told the Times of Oman.

He further said that although people always prefer moving to the capital area from the interiors, the job market in the interiors is also expanding.

“Capital is capital, and everyone is looking to move to the central areas, but in terms of job opportu-nities, there is the Sohar industrial area, Duqm investments, Nizwa and Samail also have large indus-trial areas. Owing to these, eco-nomic migration will hopefully go down in the coming years.”

Fresh graduatesTonia Gray at the Competence HR said there has been a rise in the number of fresh graduates coming from the interiors, who are applying to work in Muscat. “We have certainly noticed an in-crease in fresh degree or diploma graduates seeking employment in Muscat. In particular, they are applying to work for the larger or-ganisations that undertake annu-al graduate recruitment (primar-ily banking and oil/gas industries) and are responding to adverts placed in the media.”

“I haven’t really seen an in-crease in experienced individuals seeking to move to Muscat. The reason I imagine young people are seeking work in Muscat is that there are limited opportunities for them in the interior regions and perhaps they believe they will move more rapidly up the career ladder,” she added.

opportunities

Taken for a ride by touts“When I landed here, they took me to Salalah to work as maid in a house there,” the woman revealed.

“I was shocked when I realised that I had been duped. However, the employer was kind enough to send me back. But the mid-dlemen were demanding money. I have assured them that my mother will pay them,” the Indian woman added.

Documents provided by the woman reveal that she came on a tourist visa to Oman on May 24, which was later converted to a housemaid visa.

Shameer PTK, a Muscat-based Indian social worker, said he sus-pects this to be a clear case of hu-man trafficking.

“She was brought here on a tour-ist visa. Seems, back in India also, somebody has played a dubious

game in this regard,” Shameer said.“Recently also, we had come

across a case where an Indian housemaid was brought to Oman without following the norms. Re-cruitment agencies have their own dubious ways. At times, the house-maids find themselves stranded without any proper protection as they had not come through the le-gal channels,” Shameer added.

According to Indian immigra-tion rules, Indian women under 30-year-old cannot migrate as a housemaid.

The government had also re-cently implemented an e-Migrate system aimed at safe migration.

Whoever wishes to hire an Indian has to apply through the e-Migrate system, which will be verified at various levels to en-sure safety. According to the In-

dian ambassador, the system is devised to facilitate employment of those Indian nationals who re-quire emigration clearance.

Recently, the Indian embassy had also requested Omani au-thorities to ask for a no-objection certificate (NOC) from those who have plans to hire domestic work-ers, such as maids and nannies from India.

The request was made to en-sure safe migration and recruit-ment practices.

In 2011, the Indian govern-ment had introduced changes in the service agreements of house-maids being brought from India to Oman.

The changes were aimed at protecting the housemaids from abuse and provide skilled man-power to Omani households.

Seaplane service launchedTimes News Service

MUSCAT: Seawings, a Dubai-based seaplane touring company that offers scheduled and char-tered flights, is now operating in Oman.

“Individuals who frequently fly from Oman to Dubai can now avoid airport queues, (reduce) waiting time and create their own itinerary as the schedule can be as per their convenience,” a spokes-person from Seawings told the Times of Oman.

Besides flying to Dubai, Seaw-ings will fly to all the other emir-ates, as well as Doha. “This adds a lot of flexibility to a frequent flyer’s schedule,” the spokesper-son said.

Flight prices vary depending on routes chosen but a recent quote to fly between Muscat and Dubai was OMR1,100.

The spokesperson also said that currently they are operating a fleet of three air taxis and are ready to fulfil any commercial requirement out of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Oman. “We have already com-menced operations (but this is

the first time we are promoting the destinations and Air Taxi Ser-vices),” the spokesperson said.

“These are customized re-quests that completely depend on the guest and their preferences of routes. As you can see there are multiple landing locations in Dubai hence the pricing will de-pend on the routes and the options available. I will not be able to quote a specific amount due to the diver-sity of options available,” he said.

Given their ability to land on

water, these seaplanes are now offering direct flights to UAE and Qatar from the Muscat Interna-tional Airport.

“We flew our first guest in De-cember 2015 and since then the response has been good,” the spokesperson said.

When asked if they have all the requisite permissions, the spokesperson said that they are a full-fledged charter airline, which is allowed to operate internation-al flights within the Gulf region.

MUSCAT: Iftar meals will be dis-tributed by Dar Al Atta’a and other charity groups across different parts of the country all through the Holy Month of Ramadan.

May Al Bayat, marketing direc-tor of Dar Al Atta’a, said the char-ity group plans to distribute iftar meals all over the country as part of their Ramadan charity drive.

“We are distributing around 1,000 ration packets, across vari-ous parts of Oman, and each pack will cost OMR30 for every day es-sentials.” The total number of ra-tion packets distributed last year was 1,500, which has dropped to 1,000 this year.

“The figure stood at 5,000 about three years ago, but this number came down not only because of the financial troubles, but because many other charity groups have opened up and are offering help to several companies that have donated towards the Ramadan charity drive, which also involves offering iftar meals at 11 mosques around Oman among other initia-tives,” Al Bayat said.

According to Al Bayat, this year it is a little difficult in terms of the financial troubles, which have caused companies to cut down their budget for Corpo-rate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.

“This year is not very easy for us, we had companies that would give

us considerable amounts every year and this year they chose to give nothing, so it was certainly a bit of struggle putting things to-gether, but then we used funds from our own budget this year to support the Ramadan charity pro-grammes,” she added.

In-house volunteersDar Al Atta’a has 20 in-house vol-unteers, who are constantly work-ing throughout the month on the distribution of ration packages. However, including the corporate volunteers, the total number has gone up to 70.

Dar Al Atta’a will be distribut-ing meals across 11 mosques in the Sultanate this year. They are Al Sa-baha mosque in Sohar (100 meals daily), Al Rahma mosque in Bahla (50 meals daily), Al Jimah mosque in Bahla (50 meals daily), Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib mosque in Sa-ham (50 meals daily), Al Dheeb mosque in Saham (50 meals daily), Al Taqwa mosque in Mudhabi (100 meals daily), Al Haima mosque in Ibra (100 meals daily), Al Farooq mosque in Al Amerat (100 meals daily), Al Saih al Ahmar mosque in Bid Bid (100 meals daily), Al Abha mosque in Bousher (100 meals daily), Al Nawafil mosque in Al Mussanah (50 meals daily) and two mosques in Qantab for 100 people each daily.

“The cost for 100 meals for one full month is OMR4,500 and for 50 meals for a whole month is OMR2,250.” Al Bayat added.

WHERE TO SPEND YOUR ZAKAT The literal meaning of Zakat is ‘to cleanse’. In the Islamic faith, Zakat means purifying your wealth for the will of Allah by acknowledging that everything we own belongs to Him and as a means of working towards the betterment of the Muslim Ummah (community). Though Zakat is not always financial, and can include everything from volunteering your time to giving an encouraging word to your fellow man, according to Islamic regulations, Zakat is 2.5% of one year’s total cumulative wealth (there are various ways of calculating what should be counted), and when it comes to these financial donations to the less fortunate, it can be difficult to decide which causes speak most to your heart. We hope these charitable spotlights will help you decide.

FASTING HEALTH TIP

One of the common complaints encountered during fasting is bad breath or halitosis. It is an unpleasant odour exhaled through mouth. Our mouth has a natural anti-bacterial mouthwash

called saliva, and during Ramadan decreased intake of fluids causes decreased saliva production. This causes exaggeration of existing dental conditions like inflammation of gums, and caries of

teeth. Maintain good oral hygiene and drink lots of water or fluids during evenings and Suhoor to help minimise this issue.

UN aid convoy brings food to Syria’s besieged Daraya

GENEVA/BEIRUT: An inter-national aid convoy reached the Syrian rebel-held town of Daraya overnight to deliver food supplies for the first time since 2012, when the town came under siege by gov-ernment forces, the United Na-tions said on Friday.

Trucks from the United Nations and Syrian Arab Red Crescent brought a month’s supply of food for 2,400 people, Jens Laerke, spokesman of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitar-ian Affairs (OCHA), said.

Any sense of relief inside Daraya was short-lived, however, because the food supplies would not last a month and the UN had underestimated the number of people living there at present, the local council and a monitoring group reported.

Go through checkpointsThe operation began late on Thursday and lasted several hours, Laerke said. “They managed to get through all the checkpoints to get in there, deliver overnight, stock what needed to be stocked and provide food for the first time in years to people inside Daraya,” he told a news briefing.

Malnutrition has been reported in the rebel-held town, which is only 12 km (7 miles) from Da-mascus, where a first convoy with non-food supplies was allowed to enter on June 1.

UN mediator Staffan de Mistura,

speaking to reporters on Thursday, said President Bashar Al Assad’s government had approved UN land convoys to 15 of 17 government-besieged areas in June. Air drops remain an option if the convoys did not move, he said. As well as wheat flour and other foodstuffs, health and hygiene items for Daraya’s es-timated population of 4,000 were delivered overnight and will be dis-tributed by Red Crescent workers,

Laerke said.“However of course we call for

unconditional, unimpeded and sus-tained access to all people in need, wherever they are, but in particular besieged and hard-to-reach areas where we have still about 4.6 mil-lion people living under these con-ditions in Syria,” he added.

Some 1.9 tonnes of medicines for chronic diseases such as hy-pertension and diabetes as well as

antibiotics and vitamins, from the World Health Organisation were on the convoy, spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said.

However, the government did not approve delivery of three burns kits that would have been enough to treat about 30 people with dressings and pain killers, rejecting them from the approved list, Jasarevic said.

Insufficient amountThere was also anger and frus-tration at the insufficient amount of food aid delivered, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The British-based group tracks the war using sources on the ground. It cited the Daraya local council as saying the supplies brought in would not last two weeks.

The council says the population of Daraya is over 8,000, - more

than double the UN estimates.Council spokesman Hossam

Ayyash said it was unclear how the aid, which would cater for only a quarter of the besieged popula-tion, would be distributed.

“Of course we are grateful to the team that brought in the sup-plies, but unfortunately they are not sufficient.

We don’t know what decision will be taken (on how to distribute the aid), but it won’t be able to be shared out among everyone who’s here,” Ayyash said.

‘Israeli move on Palestinian permits may be collective punishment’GENEVA: Israel’s cancellation of entry permits for Palestinians following a deadly attack in Tel Aviv may amount to collective punishment, which is banned un-der international law, the United Nations’ top human rights official said on Friday.

Responding to the criticism, Is-rael defended its actions as “legiti-mate steps in order to defend its citizens from terrorists”.

The Israeli military on Thurs-day revoked permits for 83,000 Palestinians to visit Israel and said it would send hundreds more troops to the occupied West Bank a day after a Palestinian gun attack that killed four Israelis in Tel Aviv.

UN High Commissioner for Hu-man Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein condemned the attack, the larg-est loss of Israeli life in a single attack since the current surge in violence, spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said.

But he is deeply concerned about the revoking of permits “which may amount to prohibited collective punishment and will only increase the sense of injustice and frustration felt by Palestinians in this very tense time”, she told a news briefing.

Israel’s actions included the suspension of 204 work permits held by individuals in the extended families of the alleged attackers, she said, and Israeli security forces sealed off their entire hometown.

The Geneva Conventions say that punishing people for crimes they have not personally commit-ted can amount to collective pun-ishment, Shamdasani said.

Israel’s diplomatic mission in Geneva said the comment by Zeid’s office OHCHR “breaks a new record of cynicism and double standards”. The entry permits had been issued to Palestinians from the Israeli-occupied West Bank to visit relatives during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan now in progress.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault by the two gunmen on Wednesday in a fashionable shopping and dining market near Israel’s Defence Min-istry, but Hamas and other Pales-tinian resistance fighters groups were quick to praise it. — Reuters

Baghdadi wounded: ReportBAGHDAD/FALLUJA: U.S. and Iraqi officials said on Friday they could not confirm a report by an Iraqi TV channel that IS leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi had been wounded in an air strike in northern Iraq.

A spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting the militants, Colonel Chris Garver, said in an email that he had seen the reports but had “nothing to confirm this at this time”.

Kurdish and Arab security of-

ficials in northern Iraq said they also could not confirm the report.

Command headquartersAl Sumariya TV cited a local source in the northern province of Nineveh saying that Baghdadi and other IS leaders were wound-ed on Thursday in a coalition air strike on one of the group’s com-mand headquarters close to the Syrian border.

There have been several re-ports in the past that Baghdadi,

whose real name is Ibrahim Al Samarrai, was killed or wounded.

The group is under increased pressure in both Iraq and Syria, and the territory under its con-trol has shrunk significantly since 2014, limiting the potential for its leaders to move around or seek shelter. The US earlier this year announced an intensification of the war on IS with more air strikes and more American troops on the ground to advise and assist allied forces. — Reuters

Indian woman abducted in Kabul, efforts on for release

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: An Indian woman working for an international NGO has been kid-napped by suspected militants right outside her office in the heart of Kabul and efforts were being made to secure her release.

The woman, identified as Ju-dith D’Souza, a resident of Kolka-ta in the east Indian West Bengal state, was abducted from Taimani area along with two other persons last evening.

Judith is working for Aga Khan

Foundation as senior technical adviser and was scheduled to re-turn to India next week.

Indian External Affairs Minis-ter Sushma Swaraj said govern-ment was doing everything to rescue her.

“Our embassy is in touch with

senior Afghan authorities and the government is also in touch with her family in Kolkata. All efforts are being made by the Afghan authorities to secure her early re-lease,” an official source said.

The woman’s father D. D’Souza said in Kolkata that the family

received information that three persons — Judith, a security guard and the driver of the vehicle, were abducted.

“I want my daughter back,” said a sobbing D’Souza.

“External Affairs minister Su-shma Swaraj rang up and spoke to me and assured that the gov-ernment is making all-out efforts to bring her back,” Judith’s sister Agnes D’Souza said.

Reponding to a tweet by one of the family members of Judith, Swaraj said “She is your sister and India’s daughter. We are doing everything to rescue her. Pl take care of your sick father.” A source said the woman was abducted by suspected militants.

Chief Executive of Aga Khan Trust for Culture, India, Ratish Nanda said every effort is being made to secure her safe release.

“On Thursday, June 9, a staff member of the Aga Khan Founda-tion was abducted. An investiga-tion by the authorities has been launched, in conjunction with security officials and various part-ners. Every effort is being made to secure the safe release of the staff member,” he said in a statement in New Delhi.

The family, Agnes said, received information about the abduction in the early hours of the day. “We

received the news from the Indian embassy in Kabul at 1.30am.”

“The embassy said we are do-ing our best. We shall inform you as soon as we get any information.

“We are now awaiting. We hope that the government does some-thing and gets my sister back,” she said, adding the Afghanistan government should also take steps to trace her. She said Judith was scheduled to return home Wednesday next and had rung up two days ago. “She did not express any apprehension,” she said.

Agnes said, “We had asked her (Judith) not to go there but she did not listen.” He said his daugh-ter was working for uplifting the condition of women and children there. The Aga Khan Foundation is an agency of the Aga Khan De-velopment Network and has been working on restoration projects in the war-ravaged country.

“It will continue to work with local communities, the Govern-ment of Afghanistan and those in need to enhance the development of the country,” said Nanda. - PTI

Two killed in toxic gas leak on INS Vikramaditya

NEW DELHI: Two persons — an Indian Navy sailor and a civilian — died and two others were hos-pitalised when toxic gas leaked during maintenance work on the INS Vikramaditya aircraft car-rier at Karwar in Karnataka, a defence spokesperson said here late on Friday.

Two others who inhaled the gas are stable, officials said.

The Indian Navy has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

According to the navy, the in-cident took place at about 5pm on Friday while the ship was undergoing maintenance repairs at Karwar.

Maintenance work was being undertaken in the Sewage Treat-ment Plant (STP) Compartment.

Gas inhalationDue to inhaling toxic gas, four per-sons, including two sailors and two civilian workers, were evacuated to the Naval Hospital at Karwar.

Two of them — Shipwright Ar-tificer Class 4, Rakesh Kumar and Mohandas Kolambkar, an employ-ee of Royal Marine— succumbed to gas inhalation.

Russia’s growing influence in LibyaRichard Galustian

Russia’s growing prominence in Libya is reflecting their ever evolving new Middle East and North African policy.

While Libya has been divided between two par-liaments and governments since 2014, Russia’s in-fluence has grown with East Libya.

A review of the United Nations resolution on Libya’s arms embargo is likely to be voted upon early next week. However this will only be achieved if Russian concerns can be overcome.

Despite the international efforts a paradox re-mains. A partial lifting of the UN’s arms embargo to one side will greatly increase the danger of swelling the intensity of the civil war and of risk-ing some of those arms reaching IS.

The Russians do not understand the West’s ap-proach to extremists. Russia’s logic is sound as shown in Syria. If it looks like a duck and walks and quacks like a duck; it probably is a duck, to para-phrase Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavarov comment on terrorists.

In Libya the two divided factions, the demo-cratically elected eastern government and parlia-ment, the House of Representatives (HoR), and the ‘Libya Dawn’ coalition of militias who created Tripoli’s National Salvation Government (NSG), are now challenged by a third ‘virtual’ faction, the Government of National Accord (GNA) which was selected by the UN as a 9 man, now reduced to 7, Presidency Council (PC), which in effect consti-tutes a GNA quorum. Let me be clear: The inter-national community supports a non-existent GNA headed by a Western patsy designated prime min-ister and 6 other men. To boot, this fledgling West-ern selected so called government still faces huge unpopularity from the masses who resent Western interference in its internal affairs.

The GNA, having no military forces of their own, have agreed with Dawn Militias that they be re-badged ‘the Presidential Guard’ and that they be the recipients of new weapons permitted by the UN if the resolution is accepted by the Secu-rity Council. Interestingly Russia’s UN Ambas-sador Churkin said “the highest priority” in Libya should be to encourage the HoR Parliament in the East approval of the new GNA government. A new

twist. If anyone can persuade the East and the HoR to ‘bless’ the GNA, it will be the Russians that will be the broker. Let’s note that the cards are now in East Libya’s favour. They receive weapons through Egypt; they control their oil; they made their own currency, courtesy of Russia. The fact is IS is not a priority for Libyan adversaries and it is not as huge a threat as some would have us believe. Despite what tantamounts to propaganda by a compliant almost government manipulated Western media, there is a relatively small number of IS present in the country of hundreds not thousands.

If the West let arms like heavy artillery and most importantly ammunition to go to ‘the Dawn’ mi-litias, a sizeable proportion will undoubtedly end up in IS hands and the probable result will be that both will end up fighting Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan Army of the East. The Russians won’t allow any-thing that doesn’t protect the East Libyans. This Kremlin perspective is a reality Western nations don’t seem to grasp. Equally the Russians still don’t understand the West’s unrealistic expecta-tion to tag who’s who in Libya’s (and Syria’s) ter-rorist spectrum. Neither do I.

Moscow knows Khalifa Haftar well as the Liby-an General has made frequent trips to Russia. The Kremlin see’s Western behaviour towards Haftar as mistaken. There is a disregard by the West for the actual players on the ground like Haftar, like the tribes, yet utmost consideration is given to ‘the Dawn’ extremist and Muslim Brotherhood mili-tias which seems illogical and inconceivable.

Then there is UN Special Envoy to Libya, Martin Kobler. The other day he said “Libya is a country awash with weapons; 20 million pieces of weaponry in a land of six million inhabitants.” Kobler then childishly added, that “these weapons do not fall from the sky” adding “These arms fuel the conflict and shipments must end”. Yet he was in Vienna last month when it was agreed to do just that; to deliver more weapons.

Is he schizophrenic?Kobler’s mixed messages are making the Rus-

sians even more assertive.

India needs drastic change in its education systemThis refers to the article by Shashi Tharoor, India’s deadly entrance exams (Times of Oman) on 09.06.16. I fully agree with the views of the author that the entrance exams for higher studies in India, especially

for medical and engineering, have become a big ordeal for thousands of students and their parents. Every year, after a rigorous and intensive entrance coaching, thousands appear for these exams and fail to achieve place in the rank list for higher studies. It is a despair and futile attempt for many who find it difficult to cope with pressure from parents, relatives and friends.Coaching centres are part of education industry in India. There are hundreds of coaching centres in Kota. While a few pass the entrance exams, many parents spend their hard earned money for the admissions to engineering and medical colleges. The unfortunate fact is that the Indian middle class wrongly believes that a degree in engi-neering or medicine is a status symbol. The victims are poor children who cannot bear the pressure of exams and their parents’ ex-

pectations. It will be very difficult for the government to enlighten the public and save the young generation if it does not bring drastic timely changes in its education system. — P. A. Jacob, Muscat

Met Office warns of flash floods from above average monsoon in countryISLAMABAD: The Met Office has warned of above average mon-soon rains in the upcoming sea-son that may trigger flash floods across the country, especially along the Sulaiman Range.

The Sulaiman mountain range is a southern extension of the Hindu Kush Range and runs across Pakistan from the Feder-ally Administered Tribal Areas in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa through Balochistan along the borders of south-western Punjab and Sindh.

On Thursday, the Pakistan Me-teorological Department said this monsoon season would result in 10 per cent to 20 per cent more precipitation than previous years.

PMD Director-General Dr Ghu-lam Rasul told The Express Trib-une the southern Sindh region was expected to receive heavy rainfall during the monsoon.

“While this system will put an end to the long-running drought in Tharparkar, the rains will cause flooding in major urban centres,” he warned.

He added the monsoon season was expected to start in July this year but it was “too early to tell the exact week”. The Met Office has also predicted above normal rainfall in Punjab, K-P, Sindh, Pakistan-administered-Kashmir and northeast Balochistan.

Extreme showers are also likely

in catchment areas of major riv-ers. Strong incursions of monsoon currents, coupled with high tem-perature, may trigger glacial lake outbursts, landslides and flash floods in upper K-P and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Author-ity (NDMA) also organised a pre-monsoon 2016 preparedness conference. NDMA spokesper-son Ahmed Kamal said that based on the PMD forecast and lessons learnt from the recent past, the

authority had directed all provin-cial departments to complete pre-ventive measures before June 30 to avoid the loss of life and proper-ty. Since 2010, Pakistan has been struggling to cope with monsoon rains and the subsequent floods.

The authorities have also failed to finalise the 10-year National Flood Protection Plan to cope with the natural calamity before time.

A Met Office official, who did not want to be named, said the Federal Flood Commission (FFC)

had formulated the plan through World Bank funding but was still being worked on.

The draft of the plan was tabled before the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for approval but some of the provinces refused to accept it, claiming the plan was chalked out without consulting them, he said.

He added a few changes sug-gested by the concerned prov-inces were incorporated but the draft of the plan was still awaiting approval. - Express Tribune

US drone strike in Balochistan vitiated bilateral ties: Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s senior aide Sar-taj Aziz told a US delegation on Friday that a drone strike in Balo-chistan targeting Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour not only affected Pakistan’s sover-eignty, it also vitiated bilateral ties between the two countries.

A high-level US delegation called on Adviser to PM and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry on Friday, a Foreign Office statement said.

Ambassador Richard Olson, US Special Representative for Afghani-stan and Pakistan and Dr Peter La-voy, Senior Adviser and Director for South Asian Affairs at the National Security Council comprised the US delegation, it added.

DiscussionsThe participants held candid dis-cussions on bilateral relations, regional security situation and Afghan peace process in the wake of drone strike in Naushki area on May 21 that killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

Aziz told the delegation that the

airstrike was a breach of the prin-ciples of the United Nation’s char-ter and made it clear that any such attacks in future will be detrimen-tal to common desire of strength-ening relations.

He said the strike had seriously undermined ongoing efforts for Afghan peace and reconciliation process. The strike occurred at such a time when Pakistan, along with other Quadrilateral Coordi-nation Group (QCG) countries, was engaged in efforts to revive talks between Afghan government and Taliban.

Foreign Secretary Chaudhry recalled that it was decided in the fifth QCG meeting on May 18 that peace negotiations remained the only option for a political settle-ment. He insisted it would require collective efforts on the part of all

QCG members to promote lasting peace in Afghanistan.

In response to US queries on safe havens for Taliban, it was emphasised that Pakistan was already pursuing its objective of eliminating all militants and ter-rorists from its soil in accordance with the National Action Plan.

At the same time, the country would have to safeguard its own security through better border management and early repatria-tion of Afghan refugees.

CommittedPakistan said it also expected ac-tion by Afghan forces against the operatives of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan. These steps would also help pro-mote better relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan and re-

duce mistrust, it maintained.Dr Peter Lavoy, while convey-

ing US President Barack Obama’s good wishes for the Prime Minis-ter Nawaz Sharif ’s speedy recov-ery, said that Obama was commit-ted to improving relations with Pakistan as highlighted during Nawaz’s visit to Washington in October 2015.

Pakistan has signalled that it may reassess its ties with the United States in the wake of recent developments, including closer defence ties between Washington and New Delhi.

“Relations between Pakistan and the US need to be reassessed,” said Aziz at a news conference on Thursday.

Speaking against the backdrop of apparent strains in ties be-tween the US and Pakistan as a

result of the recent drone strike in Balochistan, the adviser conceded that Washington “abandons us when it doesn’t need our help.”

“This has been happening for the last 60 years. The US approaches Pakistan whenever it needs our help but abandons us when its ob-jectives are achieved,” he said.

Later, the high-level US del-egation, including General John Nicholson, Commander Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, called on Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif at Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, a statement issued by the military’s media wing said.

“Regional security situation with particular reference to bor-der management and peace and stability in Afghanistan in the post May 21 US drone strike envi-ronment came under discussion,” the ISPR said.

According to the statement, the army chief expressed his serious concern over the US drone strike in Balochistan.

Six killed in Karachi as mosque sun shade falls

KARACHI: A collapsed metal awning killed at least six people after Friday prayers at a mosque in Karachi, police said.

A temporary sun shade fell on the courtyard area of the Usman mosque in North Nazimabad, Ka-rachi following prayers, said police official Zulfiqar Haider.

“I was in the mosque myself … people were offering a prayers following the conclusion of the (main) Friday prayer when we heard a loud crash following a gust of wind,” he said.

The corrugated metal awning fell directly on worshippers, he said. Police and rescuers arrived at the scene and shifted the injured to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for emergency medical treatment where condition of one injured is said to be critical.

Temperatures in Karachi often hit maximums of near 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, and the awning had been erected to shield worshippers from the sun.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minis-ter Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Oppo-sition leader in the Sindh Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hasan expressed grief over the incident.

Shah directed commissioner Ka-rachi to submit an inquiry report at the earliest. - Express Tribune

Clinton in bid to unify Democrats

WASHINGTON: Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton met on Friday with U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a lead-ing progressive voice, to try to build party unity for her election campaign against Republican Donald Trump.

The two held talks at Clinton’s Washington home a day after Warren endorsed Clinton’s White House bid, adding support from the Democrats’ liberal wing as Clinton seeks to move on from her protracted primary battle with Bernie Sanders.

Warren left the meeting smiling after roughly an hour and did not speak to reporters outside.

Clinton, the former secretary of

state, earlier this week secured the delegates needed to win the party nomination for the November 8 presidential election.

Party leaders are hoping Sand-ers will drop his presidential run before the party convention in Philadelphia in July.

The Warren meeting on Friday fuelled speculation that the sena-tor from Massachusetts might be under consideration as Clinton’s running mate.

Asked in an MSNBC interview on Thursday whether she had discussed with Clinton the pros-pect of being vice president, War-ren said she had not, nor had she been vetted.

Warren has considered the idea of serving as Clinton’s running mate but sees obstacles to that choice, several people familiar with Warren’s thinking told Reu-ters this week.

Having support from Warren

would boost Clinton’s ability to court highly motivated Sanders supporters who have been fired up against Clinton during the unex-pectedly long primary battle.

Warren and Sanders share views on issues such as reining in Wall Street excesses and fighting income inequality.

Sanders said on Thursday he would remain in the race through the final nominating contest in Washington, D.C., next week

but would work with Clinton to defeat Trump.

Warren is also shaping up to be a no-holds-barred critic of Trump and they have had several spats on Twitter.

Trump, who is also scheduled to hold events in Washington on Friday, said Warren was one of the “least productive US Senators,” adding in a tweet: “Hope she is V.P. choice.”

Trump is expected to speak to

the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a Christian organisation of evan-gelical voters.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden also an-nounced their support of Clinton on Thursday, handing her a trio of endorsements expected to boost her standing heading into the gen-eral election campaign.

Email controversyBut Clinton is dogged by the con-troversy surrounding her use of a private email server while secre-tary of state from 2009-2013.

Emails between US diplomats in Islamabad and State Depart-ment officials in Washington about whether to challenge spe-cific drone strikes in Pakistan are at the centre of a criminal probe involving her handling of classified information, the Wall Street Jour-nal reported on Thursday.

Republicans have consistently criticised Clinton over her email use.”We should not live above the law, and that is one of the cardinal sins that Secretary Clinton vio-lated,” House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Friday.

Clinton has said she did not send or receive any information that was marked as classified and has accused the State Department and other government agencies of “over-classifying” her emails after a judge ordered them released to the public. — Reuters

Final tribute unfolds in Louisville for ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad AliLOUISVILLE: Hundreds of peo-ple gathered outside Muhammad Ali’s boyhood home in Kentucky and elsewhere along a funeral procession route on Friday to cel-ebrate the boxing champion who jolted America with his show-manship and won worldwide ad-miration as a man of principle.

Ali, a once-controversial con-vert to Islam who lost three years of his boxing career for refusing US military service during the Vi-etnam War, died a week ago at age 74 as one of the most respected men in the United States.

A hearse embarked on a route through Louisville, Kentucky, that would take Ali’s body past landmarks such as his boyhood home on the West End, tradition-ally an African-American section of town, and the Muhammad Ali Center, a museum in the center of the Louisville.

It was to end at Cave Hill Nation-al Cemetery with a private burial.

Thousands of people were lat-er expected to fill the KFC Yum Center for a memorial featuring eulogies by former US Presi-dent Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal, beginning at 2 p.m. (1800 GMT).

Jordan’s King Abdullah had been announced as one of the dig-nitaries due to attend the sports arena for the service.

Pallbearers will include actor Will Smith, who earned an Oscar nomination for playing the title role in the 2001 film Ali” and former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis.

Fans such as Cathy Oost, 61, a retired public school teacher who lives in Louisville, was one of several hundred people to gather under blue skies at the cemetery gates to pay their respects.

She held a sign that read “Our Champ, Our Hero.” Oost said she was struck by Ali’s speaking out for racial equality and his stance against the Vietnam War, plus his defence of Islam.

Ali, a three-time world heavy-weight champion, also paved the way for black athletes to express

themselves with flair and con-fidence, and gave US Muslims a hero they could share with main-stream America.

“He stood up for his beliefs when it was unpopular and diffi-cult to do so. We all need to do that more,” Oost said.

Bridget McKay, 45, also at the cemetery gates, said she felt drawn to witness history.

“I remember when I was a little

girl, all the hype around him,” she said.”He was so boastful and con-fident about who he was.

He made me feel that it was OK to be myself, that I didn’t have to be anyone else.”

After years of restoration to convert his childhood home into a museum, developers finally held a grand opening on May 1.

“They (Ali’s family) wanted to bring Muhammad here for

one last visit but his health just wasn’t permitting it, unfortu-nately,” said co-owner George Bochetto, a former Pennsylvania boxing commissioner.

Visitors this week waited up to 90 minutes to tour the modest pink house, and police estimated 1,500 people lined the small resi-dential street on Friday to see the man known as “The Greatest” come home one last time.

“This is where he started,” said former heavyweight boxer and ac-tor Randall “Tex” Cobb.”He didn’t start in a gym.

He didn’t start as Muham-mad Ali. He started in this house right here.”

Willie B. Palmer, 75, said he graduated high school with Ali, who was training for the Olym-pics when he graduated Central High School in 1960. Ali would train by jogging the bus route to the school. — Reuters

Bindra chosen India’s flagbearer at Rio Olympics

NEW DE:HI: Olympic cham-pion shooter Abhinav Bindra was on Friday chosen as the flagbearer of the Indian contin-gent at the Rio Games’ opening ceremony on August 5.

The Indian Olympic Associa-tion (IOA) confirmed that they have chosen the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medallist as the country’s flagbearer for the quadrennial extravaganza.

Bindra will be making his fifth Olympic appearance this year. Alongside star boxer Vi-jender Singh, tennis legend Le-ander Paes and decorated grap-pler Sushil Kumar, Bindra’s name was under considera-tion prior to the 2012 London Games too, before the IOA gave the honour to the double Olym-pic medallist wrestler.

The 33-year-old is till date India’s only individual gold medallist at the Olympics.

The usually reserved shoot-er achieved the feat when he clinched a historic gold in 10-me-tre air rifle event at the Beijing Games in 2008.

The National Rifle Associa-tion of India (NRAI) expressed its delight at the development.

Last OlympicsBindra said on Friday he will bring the curtains down on his illustrious career at the upcom-ing Rio Games where he will be the country’s flagbearer in the opening ceremony.

The 33-year-old said his 20-year-long sporting career has been a special one.

“As my sporting career which lasted 20 years draws to a close on the 8th of August, this is in-deed special,” Bindra wrote on his twitter handle.

“To be the flag bearer at the Olympic Games is an athletes ultimate honor.I am humbled & grateful to be considered worthy of this great honour,” Bindra said.

“I am sure the Indian Olym-pic Team would have the sup-port of over a billion people as we march into the Rio Olympic Stadium.”

Bindra will be making his fifth Olympic appearance this year. He will be competing in the men’s 10-metre air rifle event on August 8.

Winner of numerous medals at top international competi-tions including World Cham-pionships, World Cups, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, Bindra is also one of the goodwill ambassadors of the Indian contingent for the Rio Games and is working towards inspiring the athletes to give their best this summer. - PTI

O L Y M P I C SOpeners lead Sri Lanka fightback on second day

LONDON: Sri Lanka’s openers shared a fluent century stand to lead their side to 162 for one in re-ply to England’s 416 on the second day of the third and final Test at Lord’s on Friday.

Kaushal Silva made an unbeaten 79 and Dimuth Karunaratne 50 for the touring side after Jonny Bairstow’s 167 not out carried England to a commanding first-innings total as they bid to wrap up the series 3-0.

Bairstow and Chris Woakes, who came together with the hosts in trouble at 227 for six, shared an excellent partnership of 144 on another fine day at the home of cricket.

Woakes contributed a polished 66, his first Test fifty, hitting eight crisp fours in nearly three hours at the crease before he chipped a catch back to left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.

Bairstow, whose brilliant 140 set up England’s innings victory in the first Test, went past 150 with his 17th four to continue his rich vein of form with the bat.

He made a costly error with the keeper’s gloves, however, spilling a routine catch off Woakes to give Karunaratne a reprieve on 28.

The Sri Lanka opener took ad-

vantage to get to 50 for the first time in the series before he nicked Steven Finn down the leg side and Bairstow held the catch to make partial amends for his blunder.

Silva was untroubled by a tooth-less England attack, hitting 10 fours, and Kusal Mendis moved smoothly to 25 not out at the close. - Reuters

New challenge for Dhoni as India take on ZimbabweHARARE: He has mostly led a formidable bunch of limited-overs specialists but it will be a differ-ent sort of challenge for Mahen-dra Singh Dhoni when he captains a new-look Indian cricket team against Zimbabwe in the first ODI of a short series starting here on Saturday.

Over the years, the series in Zimbabwe has always featured limited-overs matches played post-IPL where the BCCI sends its second-string outfits to test the bench strength. The second string outfits have, in fact, effected back-to-back whitewashes 5-0 and 3-0

in 2013 and 2015 respectively. It was supposed to be no differ-

ent this time around as well. The squad of 15 comprises as

many as five uncapped players (including KL Rahul, who is yet to make his limited-overs debut) but it has gained special significance

because of Dhoni, who will be playing in the African nation after 11 long years.

The last time when Dhoni played in Zimbabwe back in 2005, his international career was barely six months old and a certain Sau-rav Ganguly was still in charge of

the ‘Men In Blue’. But now the sit-uation is different post his retire-ment from Test cricket and Virat Kohli’s Bradmanesque form in the past six months leading to calls of his removal from captaincy.

While he may not be battling to save his captaincy yet but tours like the one about to start in Zim-babwe are the proverbial ‘banana peel’ for any top cricketer.

A series win will never be feted as it is something that everyone ex-pects to be accomplished but at the same time any unexpected result will send the kind of shock waves that the Jharkhand dasher just

would not fancy at the moment. With India having a Test heavy

home schedule this year with a few ODIs and T20s against New Zea-land and England, this is Dhoni’s last chance to be in the mix as he won’t be playing a lote next few months.

India will be embarking on a Test tour of the Caribbean after this as-signment. While Dhoni has played a total of 275 ODIs, the rest of the squad cumulatively has 83 match-es to their credit. Also if one takes away Ambati Rayudu (31 matches) and Axar Patel (22)’s participation, the seven others have a total of 30 matches to their names. — PTI

Germany hold India in thrilling openerLONDON: India started their Champions Trophy hockey cam-paign with a nail-biting 3-3 draw against defending champions Germany here on Friday.

In what turned out to be a bril-liant comeback from the Olympic gold medallists, Germany came from two goals down to play out a draw as India squandered a great start to lose the momentum in the final three minutes.

The first quarter turned out to be an eventful one for India as drag-flicker V.R. Raghunath success-fully converted a penalty corner in the seventh minute to get a 1-0 lead. German goalkeeper Tobias Walter failed to read the thunder-ous hit from Raghunath’s stick.

India continued their domina-tion in the second quarter as SV Sunil found the nets only to be reverted after referral in the 18th minute. The ball had touched his foot just before he struck home.

Meanwhile, Germany, in their quest for the equaliser failed to make use of the penalty cor-ner in the 24th minute as In-dian captain and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh managed to stop them.

Two minutes later, the Germans finally managed to draw level af-ter Tom Grambusch converted a penalty corner. But their joy was shortlived as midfielder Mandeep Singh, playing his 150th interna-tional game regained the lead for India with a brilliant field goal to lead 2-1 into half time.

Coming after the break, India struck immediately in the 32nd minute as drag-flicker Harman-preet Singh extended the lead with a scorcher of a finish. But four minutes later, Germany pulled one back with Grambusch

grabbing his second goal by con-verting a penalty corner. The Ger-mans tried hard to get the equal-iser but Sreejesh brilliantly foiled both their attempts as India ended the third quarter with a 3-2 lead.

The fourth quarter started without much action until the 52nd minute when Mandeep missed a chance to double the lead after a scramble in the goal mouth which he shot too wide.

A penalty stroke for Jonas Go-moll helped Germany equalise with the final scoreline reading 3-3. — Agencies

Temptation of draw might stymie England and Russia

MARSEILLE: England and Rus-sia are the big beasts of Group B and, though each would love a win-ning start when they meet on Sat-urday, the fear of losing could well become all-pervading and lead to a cagey encounter.

With games against Wales and Slovakia to come, and the potential for three teams to qualify with two guaranteed, a point at the Velo-drome might look a very useful re-sult in a couple of weeks.

England, on the back of win-ning all 10 qualifiers, not to men-tion a rare victory in Germany in a friendly, start favourites and will expect to make the running in front of a 60,000 crowd that will be predominantly behind them.

However, despite that great run of form, England are anything but a settled side as Roy Hodgson struggles with the question of how to shoe-horn his form players into

an established system.Strikers Jamie Vardy, fresh

from leading Leicester City to the most unlikely Premier League ti-tle, and Harry Kane, the Premier League’s top scorer, seemingly de-mand selection.

But Hodgson is adamant Wayne Rooney, the captain and most ex-perienced squad member, should get a starting berth, leaving the coach experimenting with his at-tacking options right up to the last minute.

At least he is picking from strength in that regard as his, and England’s more pressing concern is in central defence where any combination of Gary Cahill, Chris

Smalling and John Stones has looked vulnerable and remains England’s Achilles heel.

Impressive statisticsEngland have not lost in 90 or 120 minutes in 22 Euro matches in finals and qualifiers, going back to a 3-2 de-feat by Croatia in November 2007.

The impressive statistics are skewed, however, as they lost on penalties to Italy in the 2012 quar-terfinals and failed to qualify in 2008. Russia reached the semi-finals that year with a side full of passion and pace but they were dis-appointing in 2012 and in the 2014 World Cup and the current crop are not a group to have fans on the edge

of their seats. They are, however, a well-organised and technically adept squad and coach Leonid Slut-sky has quickly developed a strong team spirit since taking over from Fabio Capello last August.

He has, however, been forced to change his plans somewhat after injuries ruled midfielders Alan Dzagoev and, after last week’s 1-1 draw with Serbia, Igor Denisov out of the tournament.

With that to deal with and win-nable games on the horizon, Russia are unlikely to take too many risks on Saturday, leaving it up to England to decide whether to open up in all-out pursuit of victory or indulge in 90 minutes of cautious chess. - Reuters

CHANTILLY: Goalkeeper Joe Hart is keen to forget England’s failures at previous tournaments and put his trust in the new young squad at the European Championship in France this month.

A perfect qualifying cam-paign and warm-up victories over Turkey, Australia and Portugal have raised hopes Roy Hodgson’s charges might win a first major trophy since England’s World Cup triumph 50 years ago.

Hart has been part of England’s squad at three earlier tournaments but has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals.

“I’ve gone into every tour-nament confident and felt like we’ve been ready. So for me to say it’s different this time would be wrong,” Hart told reporters on Thursday.

“But they’ve gone, they are the past, this is a new one, a new set of players we’re going to give it all we’ve got.”

England’s squad is the youngest at the tournament, with only four survivors from

Euro 2012. Hodgson has indi-cated captain Wayne Rooney will be a mandatory pick, but the form of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy means Eng-land’s record goal scorer may be shoe-horned into midfield. That will probably displace Delle Alli from his preferred attacking midfield berth and should Rooney, 30, again struggle at an international tournament, Hodgson’s loy-alty to the Manchester United captain will be questioned.

But for Hart, there was no doubting the skipper’s importance. “Wayne is such a key part of the squad, and accessible to all the players,” said Hart. “There is definitely a connection and age doesn’t really factor into this team.”

Hodgson’s England have struggled for tournament goals despite a wealth of attacking talent - since a 3-2 victory over Sweden in their second match of Euro 2012 the Three Lions have netted just three times in five out-ings, only one of which was won. - Reuters

Wales may need ‘Plan B’ if Bale misfires against SlovakiaBORDEAUX: Wales must find a way of avoiding over dependence on Gareth Bale if they are to make progress at their first major inter-national tournament for 58 years, starting with Saturday’s opening Group B match against Slovakia.

Not since John Charles, a world-class performer at centre-half and centre-forward in Serie A six dec-ades ago, have they relied so much on one player.

When ‘Gentle Giant’ Charles missed the 1958 World Cup quar-ter-final against Brazil, Wales still performed creditably but lost 1-0 to the eventual champions.

The current squad have shown little sign of similar resilience without their one genuine class player Bale, who cost a world re-cord 85 million pounds ($123.06 million) when Real Madrid signed him from Tottenham Hotspur three years ago.

Operating just behind the main striker, Bale scored seven of the 11 goals that enabled Wales to fin-ish runners-up to Belgium in their qualifying group.

On Thursday, Bale was adamant that Wales were “never a one-man team”, adding: “For us, it’s a squad thing. We’re ‘Together Stronger’....we don’t just say it for no reason.”

Yet those who believe Wales are totally reliant on their totem can point to how they have fared with-out him in subsequent friendlies, of which he has played only half an hour in total.

They lost three and drew the other one at home to Northern Ire-

land only through a late penalty.

Plan BFormer captain Kevin Ratcliffe said this week that Wales need a ‘Plan B’ -- and he did not mean ‘B’ for Bale. Lacking a main striker of genuine international quality,

coach Chris Coleman knows his side must rely on midfield support as well as a normally reliable de-fence that looked less impressive in the final warm-up game — a 3-0 defeat by Sweden.

When Wales take on Slovakia, in a fixture between the two teams

regarded as the weakest in a group also containing England and Rus-sia, the Slovaks will hope to take ad-vantage of opponents who have won only one of their past seven games.

Previous results between the two sides offer bewilderment rather than enlightenment. Wales lost 5-1

at home to the Slovaks in 2006 -- Bale scoring his first international goal, as a 17-year-old -- but in the re-turn game in Trnava they won 5-2.

Jan Kozak’s Slovakia illustrat-ed their potential by reeling off six straight victories in qualify-ing, ending holders Spain’s long

unbeaten run and then beating Ukraine. Winning in the rain away to world champions Germany less than a fortnight ago will have done further wonders for their self-be-lief and Wales will need far more than just Bale at his best to over-come them. - Reuters

LENS: Switzerland may get a taste of their own medicine on Saturday when they meet an Albania side featuring several players who benefited from the highly-acclaimed Swiss youth set-up. Loyalties will be divided in a fascinating Group A clash which, for the first time in the European Championship, will have brothers on opposing sides in Granit and Taulant Xhaka.

Both are of Albanian herit-age and were born in Basel but Granit will line up for Switzer-land and older brother Taulant, provided he recovers from a thigh injury, for their opponents.

In all, nine members of Alba-nia’s 23-man squad had the right to play for Switzerland, and six members of the Swiss squad could have opted for Albania. Switzerland accepted tens of

thousands of Kosovar Albanians who fled the Balkan wars in the 1990s following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.

The Swiss football federation

(SFV) actively tapped into the potential offered by the second-generation immigrants, recruit-ing them to its widely-acclaimed youth development programmes.

The policy paid dividends as the Swiss uncovered talents such as Xherdan Shaqiri, Ricardo Rodriguez and Breel Embolo, all from immigrant backgrounds.

The flip side was that they unwittingly coached players for other countries’ national teams.

Past cases included Frank Feltscher, who chose to play for Venezuela, and Mladen Petric, who opted for Croatia, while seven players in Albania’s squad in France — Arlind Ajeti, Fred-eric Veseli, Naser Aliji, Migjen Basha, Armir Abrashi, Shkelzen Gashi and Taulant Xhaka — have played for Switzerland’s youth teams.

Former Switzerland coach Ott-mar Hitzfeld called for a change in the rules to prevent changes of allegiance, pointing out that the

SFV had invested some 30,000 Swiss francs ($31,120.33) in coaching each player. For the players themselves, it is often a difficult choice.

When Switzerland played Al-bania in a World Cup qualifier at Euro 2012, Granit Xhaka faced hostility and criticism from both sides.

Albania fans jeered him while a Swiss television commentator implied that he had deliberately missed an easy chance when his side were already 2-0 ahead.

“Presumably Xhaka was not unhappy at not having scored against Albania,” said Sacha None of this bothers the Xhakas’ parents who in the space of three days last year watched Switzerland qualify for the European Champion-ship. - Reuters

Oman raises $2.5b from foreign bond

MUSCAT: Oman, the largest Arab oil producer that’s not an Opec member, raised $2.5 bil-lion from its first international bond sale in almost two decades as it seeks to plug a budget deficit caused by crude’s decline.

The Gulf nation sold $1 billion of five-year notes at a yield of 245 basis points over the benchmark midswap rate and $1.5 billion of 10-year bonds at a spread of 320 basis points, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Pricing was tightened from the initial guidance of mid- to high-

200 basis points for the five-year notes and mid-300 basis points for the 10-year bonds, said the person, asking not to be identified because the information is private.

Tapping the bond marketOman joins several other govern-ments and companies from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council tapping the bond market as they fund shortfalls after the price of crude fell by about half over the past two years. The region is home to about a third of global oil reserves.

Qatar, the world’s biggest lique-

fied natural gas exporter, raised $9 billion from a three-part bond sale last month in the Middle East’s biggest-ever issue, and Abu Dhabi raised $5 billion in April.

The budget deficit for Oman is forecast at 19.7 per cent of gross domestic product this year com-pared to 20.4 percent in 2015, ac-cording estimates from the Inter-national Monetary Fund (IMF).

makeover at Apple’s

developer conference

SAN FRANCISCO: Asking Ap-ple’s voice-activated assistant, Siri, what the company plans to unveil at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco next week elicits the response: “If I told you, they’d probably make me sit through product security again.”

Witty, perhaps, but Siri will have to supply more satisfying answers if it’s going to convince customers, developers and investors that Ap-ple is keeping pace with Alphabet’s Google Now and Amazon.com’s Alexa in one of the hottest emerg-ing areas of tech: virtual personal assistants.

Alongside updates to Apple Music and the company’s mobile, watch and television operating systems, Apple will announce that for the first time it will let outside developers integrate Siri with their apps, according to a person familiar with the plans. Getting programmers on board is an es-sential step toward building tools that make Apple’s devices more indispensable — such as apps that let you use voice commands on an iPhone or iPad to order a pizza or summon an Uber car, both of which Alexa can already do through the Echo in-home speaker.

“Siri needs to grow up and get smarter, and by being in other apps it will get smarter because it will know more of what I do,” said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies in San Jose, California. “It’s like quicksand — if you move slightly, you sink deeper. It’s another little thing that gets you more entrenched into the eco-system.”

App ecosystemIndeed, Apple is trying to pull peo-ple deeper into its network of apps and services — from iTunes to Ap-ple Music and iCloud storage — to help make up for slowing iPhone sales. The developers conference, which focuses on software, has therefore become more significant for Apple after playing second fid-dle to the company’s much-her-alded hardware rollouts for years. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has repeatedly highlighted the im-portance of sales from services, which have become the fastest-growing part of Apple’s business.

As part of that drive, Apple earli-er this week laid out changes to the App Store. Starting on Monday — the day the conference kicks off in San Francisco — Apple will halve the portion of sales it takes from developers if customers subscribe to a product for more than a year, and it will let developers pay to get more prominent placement within US App Store searches.

Music-streaming serviceA revamped music-streaming ser-vice will also feature in the pres-entation at WWDC, Bloomberg News reported in May.

A consumer shift toward mu-sic streaming poses a mounting threat to the $3.5 billion iTunes song-download business, and Ap-ple’s year-old answer to Spotify and Pandora Media has been trou-bled by tepid critical reception, in-

fighting and executive departures. That’s prompted an overhaul of the $10-per-month Apple Music streaming service, which will be unveiled on Monday and include changes to the interface intended to make it more intuitive to use.

Siri’s rivalsThe race to develop the most useful virtual assistant will help decide whose products consum-ers use to engage with the digital world. Apple got a head start when it introduced Siri in 2011. Yet in the years since then it has lost ground to Google Now, which fol-lowed in July 2012, and Amazon’s Alexa, unveiled in November 2014.

That’s why the audience at Ap-ple’s annual developer confab will pay particular attention to anything software chief Craig Fed-erighi might say about improve-ments to Siri if he takes the stage at the Bill Graham Auditorium. A Siri developer kit — the software tools that let programmers create applications — would increase the number of products and services that iOS users can access through Siri, tying them more closely to Apple devices. — Bloomberg News

Bank of Russia cuts key interest rate for first time since July as risks fadeMOSCOW: Russia’s central bank reduced borrowing costs for the first time in almost a year as its fo-cus shifts away from risks to infla-tion after the rouble rallied and oil prices stabilised.

The one-week auction rate was cut to 10.5 per cent from 11 per cent, according to a statement on Friday. Twenty-two of 43 econo-mists in a Bloomberg survey pre-dicted a 50 basis-point decrease, with the rest seeing no change. “The Bank of Russia will consider the possibility of a further rate cut based on estimates for inflation risks and the extent to which a decline in inflation aligns with the forecast trajectory,” the central bank said in the statement.

In one of the most debated deci-sions since Governor Elvira Nabi-ullina took charge three years ago, the central bank is resuming an easing cycle thwarted since last July by the crash in oil and a new round of inflation pressure. The pivot comes before a parliamen-tary ballot in September, Vladimir Putin’s biggest electoral test since he returned to the presidency in 2012, which is raising the threat of spending increases that could again fan prices.

“Almost everything improved since the last meeting in April,” Dmitry Shagardin, an analyst at

Bank Saint-Petersburg, said be-fore the announcement. “Infla-tion failed to accelerate despite expectations, oil is stable at a high level in the past two months.”

Inflation risks including wage growth and uncertainty about fis-cal policy mean the pace of easing should be “gradual,” the Interna-tional Monetary Fund (IMF) said last month. In contrast, the head of VTB Group, Russia’s second-largest lender, has called for a “decisive” single cut of two per-

centage points to give the market a “clear signal.”

The rouble extended losses af-ter the announcement and traded 0.6 per cent weaker at 64.6925 against the dollar as of 1:34pm in Moscow. The Russian currency has gained almost 14 per cent against the dollar this year, the second-biggest rally in emerging markets, after a 20 per cent loss in 2015. Oil prices advanced 37 per cent in the same period.

While the central bank shifted

to an easing bias in April for the first time this year, it made any rate cuts conditional on infla-tion risks falling enough to have “greater certainty” of reaching the 4 per cent price target in 2017. Policy makers have also conceded that monetary easing will bring little relief to the economy that’s been in contraction since the start of last year.

Inflation surpriseThe Bank of Russia has warned about a possible increase in in-flation in May-June. Even so, an-nual price growth remained at 7.3 per cent for a third month in May, the slowest since 2014. That’s less than half the level of inflation in July 2015, when the central bank last cut rates.

A recovery in oil may deepen the slowdown in inflation. The consumer-price index may end 2016 at 5.5 per cent from a year earlier if oil prices remain at their current level, according to Deputy Finance Minister Maxim Oreshkin.

“There are reasons to cut,” Olga Sterina, an analyst at UralSib Capital in Moscow, said before the decision. “The key rate, at its level of 11 per cent, was high when taking into account current infla-tion.” — Bloomberg News

Instagram attracting more advertising than Twitter: SurveySAN FRANCISCO: Advertising agencies are for the first time turn-ing to Instagram more frequently than Twitter for social media ad campaigns, a survey released on Thursday showed, a further indi-cation of weakness in an ad sales operation that has been one of the few bright spots for Twitter.

The survey, from a unit of Com-cast called Strata, came the same week Twitter Inc said its head of product, who took over the team in September, was leaving. The re-search firm eMarketer said earlier this month that Snapchat was on pace to surpass Twitter in US ac-tive users, highlighting the threat Twitter faces from faster-growing competitors.

Amid Twitter’s ongoing strug-gles with stagnant user growth, management turmoil and a tum-

bling stock price, the advertising operations under chief operat-ing office Adam Bain had been a relative oasis of stability. Bain, who joined the company in 2010, helped build Twitter from scratch to more than $1 billion revenue in just over three years.

But cracks in the ad business began to emerge in the company’s first-quarter earnings report, in which it missed its numbers due to weaker-than-expected spending by big advertisers and provided a weak revenue forecast. The stock has fallen 15 per cent since the April earnings announcement and closed on Wednesday at $14.60 - far below its $26 IPO price in No-vember of 2013.

The Strata survey asked 83 ad-vertising agencies which social platform their clients preferred

for social media campaigns. Sixty-three per cent of advertisers said they were most likely to use photo-sharing app Instagram, compared with 56 per cent who said they would use social network Twit-ter. Facebook dominated, with 96 per cent of advertisers saying

they were likely to use it. Twitter rejected the survey results, point-ing to a 2015 study by Advertiser Perceptions that showed 37 per cent of advertisers intended to buy ads on Twitter, compared with 28 per cent on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook. The same

study showed that 46 per cent were considering buying ads on Twitter compared with 41 per cent on Instagram.

“The data presented in this survey couldn’t be farther from the truth,” a Twitter spokesper-son said. “We have close rela-tionships with our agency cli-ents and continue to hear that Twitter offers the most powerful creative canvas.”

Still, the survey shows the grow-ing power of Instagram, which has the benefit of using Facebook’s ad-vertising technology and has been rolling out features that make it more useful for sharing news and activity updates that are the bread and butter of Twitter. Instagram has more than 200,000 advertisers compared with Twitter’s 130,000.

“We’re seeing almost all of our

clients shifting if not all of their budgets, then most of their budg-ets from Twitter to Instagram,” said Chris Gilbert, senior social strategist at digital agency Kettle, which works mostly with fashion brands. “Marketers typically want to be where the audience is.”

Some ad agencies said their clients are shifting more of their budgets to Instagram because it has more users — more than 400 million compared with 310 million on Twitter — and because Face-book’s ad technology allows them to target highly specific audiences.

“We’ve had more emphasis on Instagram for the last year,” said Jason Peterson, chief creative of-ficer at ad agency Havas World-wide North America.

China rivals US, Europe as growth engine for exports

HONG KONG: China is now an equal or even bigger driver of export growth in neighbouring economies than the US and EU combined, marking a significant shift in the economic pecking order since the 2008 global finan-cial crisis.

That’s according to research by Deutsche Bank economists who weighed up the influence of the US and China over the rest of Asia through the prism of export growth, as well as the currency and bond markets.

In Taiwan and Indonesia, for example, the growth of China’s gross domestic product (GDP) dominates the US and European Union’s as a source of export de-mand. In other economies, the trading giants are equally impor-tant.

“This is noticeably different from the pre-crisis years when China was much less important — bordering on irrelevance — as

an engine of growth in the region,” Deutsche analysts led by Asia-Pacific Chief Economist Michael Spencer wrote in a note.

After a rocky start to the year, China has been aided in its growth prospects by a record surge in credit in the first quarter. Key in-dicators for May are expected to show that the economy is contin-uing to find its footing and growth is on track to hit the Communist Party’s goal of 6.5 per cent to 7 per cent for 2016.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in April upgraded

its China growth forecasts by 0.2 percentage point for this year and next, following signs of “resilient domestic demand” and growth in services that offset weakness in manufacturing.

Beyond the pace of GDP growth, China’s currency gyrations are also increasingly important across the region. While the dollar still drives volatility in most Asian currencies, the yuan is as least as important for fluctuations in the ringgit and won and is growing in significance for other exchange rates, except the peso.

“Asia is far from being a ‘yuan bloc’, but idiosyncratic shocks to the yuan cannot be ignored,” ac-cording to the Deutsche analysts.

The People’s Bank of China sur-prised traders this week by setting the reference rate at weaker-than-expected levels, helping send the currency to its biggest declines in four months versus a trade-weighted basket that includes thxe yen and the euro.

The rate’s fixing had become more predictable since early Feb-ruary after the PBOC pledged greater transparency and the yuan

increasingly tracked moves in the dollar against major currencies. That was after a sudden weaken-ing of the yuan in January fuelled fears of a devaluation and trig-gered global market turmoil. Dur-ing the subsequent three months, the central bank adopted a more market-based system to set the rate and said the basket would play a bigger role.

US seeks to overhaul its oil-reservesWASHINGTON: The US Energy Department is making the case that the nation’s emergency oil supply needs an overhaul before a massive drawdown begins later this decade.

Congress has mandated that the department sell as much as 18 per cent of the Strategic Petro-leum Reserve (SPR) from 2018 through 2025 to offset some unre-lated government expenses. The department is asking lawmakers to approve funding to modernise the reserve facilities themselves to help prepare for the sales.

“If we don’t get an appropriation from Congress, we cannot start selling oil” to pay for upgrades, Bob Corbin, the Energy Department’s deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Petroleum Reserves, told reporters at the reserve’s Bryan Mound site near Freeport, Texas.

Established in response to the Arab oil embargo in the 1970s, the reserve holds 695.1 million bar-rels of crude in salt caverns at four sites in Texas and Louisiana. For years, Energy Department officials have said the network of pipelines, pumps and caverns is in need of regular maintenance, like replac-ing rusty equipment, to withstand the humid conditions along the Gulf of Mexico.

At the Bryan Mound site, where pipes and valves span hundreds of acres of marshlands, a floating roof on a storage tank collapsed in May 2015 due to extensive wear. Cor-rosion was responsible for an im-mense gash on a 1980s-era water pipe at the reserve’s Big Hill site near Winnie, Texas in April.

Lawmakers last year agreed to fund US highway mainte-nance with 66 million barrels in sales from the reserve from 2023 through 2025. A budget bill that President Barack Obama signed last year mandated another 58 million in sales from 2018 through 2025 as a spending offset.

Corbin said that failing to up-grade equipment “could poten-tially impact the ability to sell oil” later in the decade. — Bloomberg News

European Central Bank doesn’t need new stimulus to hit goal: Key official WARSAW: The European Cen-tral Bank (ECB) has pledged enough stimulus to return euro-area inflation to its goal, policy maker Bostjan Jazbec said, in a sign that officials may sit tight over the summer months.

“At the current juncture, I’d firmly confirm that the measures work and that we can only look forward to responding to every-thing that comes to our table,” Jazbec, the Slovenian central-bank governor, said in an inter-view in Ljubljana on Thursday. “Of course, if you ask is there anything more we can do, my an-swer would always be yes. But is it needed today? No.”

Inflation has missed the ECB’s target of just under 2 per cent for more than three years, and hasn’t been above zero since January, prompting the Governing Coun-cil to ramp up stimulus yet again in March. While economists sur-veyed by Bloomberg see fresh measures being needed before the end of the year, Jazbec said updat-ed staff forecasts indicate that the central bank’s existing measures could be sufficient.

The projections published this month, showing that infla-tion should average 1.6 per cent in 2018, are “exactly close to our goal,” he said.

Reading listThe 46-year-old governor’s com-ments come amid international concern that central-bank poli-cies are near the limit of their ef-fectiveness, and pressure for gov-ernments to be more proactive. ECB President Mario Draghi said on Thursday that delaying struc-tural reforms in the euro area for domestic political reasons would slow the impact of monetary stim-ulus and come with an economic cost that is “simply too high.”

Jazbec, seen as a relatively hawkish Governing Council mem-ber, spoke in his office in the Slove-nian central bank, at a desk stacked with recent books on economics and history by authors such as Ben S. Bernanke, Adair Turner, Thom-as Piketty and Mary Beard.

“We all read and we all learned from the same books and those books will always stress the im-portance of a policy mix,” he said. “Today an enormous pressure and responsibility lies on monetary

policy, while it is obvious that monetary policy would be even more successful if other policies were to complement it.”

Jens Weidmann, president of Germany’s Bundesbank and a long-time critic of how far the ECB has pushed its stimulus, gave his view on the interplay of different policy areas on Friday. He called for a “virtuous circle” of sound monetary, fiscal and financial stances to safeguard economic sta-bility, and criticised governments.

“The euro area still has a long way to go, especially with re-gard to fiscal policy,” he said at a conference in Eltville, Germany. “Unfortunately, the spillover from monetary policy — savings through lower interest expenses -- has not been used as much as it could to press ahead with improv-ing public budgets.”

Jazbec noted that near-term risks including the refugee crisis, Greece’s aid negotiations and the UK’s referendum on its Euro-pean Union membership are also weighing on the economy.

“You would hardly find an in-vestor who would consciously invest into an uncertain environ-ment, even if interest rates indi-cate these are the right times to increase your investment,” he fur-ther said. — Bloomberg News

Hong Kong tops in race to be the most competitive nationSINGAPORE: Singapore and Hong Kong have been vying for years to hold the crown of most competitive place to do business. Now a clear winner is emerging: Hong Kong.

While Hong Kong is rising on world rankings for competitive-ness, Singapore is sliding. The latest results from IMD, a Swiss business school, put Hong Kong at the top of the list, knocking the US off the No. 1 spot. Singapore has dropped from third to fourth place.

The IMD defines competitive-ness as the ability of a country to create an environment in which businesses can generate sustain-able value. The rankings are based on a combination of hard data and opinion surveys of more than 5,400 business executives cover-ing four main areas: economic per-formance, government and busi-ness efficiency and infrastructure.

Both Hong Kong and Singapore boast low taxes, good infrastruc-ture and easy procedures to open a business, so why the divergence in competitiveness?

One of the reasons is Singapore’s weakening economy as exports in the trade-reliant nation have come under pressure. But another key factor may be Singapore’s stricter

rules on hiring foreign labor, which adds to business costs.

“The key difference between the two territories is Singapore’s re-strictions on importing foreign la-bor, and their policy of boosting la-bor costs to discourage companies from being dependent on foreign labour,” said Brian Tan, an econo-mist at Nomura Plc in Singapore.

The index flags Hong Kong’s la-bour market as more competitive than in Singapore, with the China-controlled territory improving from 2015 on scores such as work-ing hours, skill levels, unemploy-ment legislation and immigration levels. Hong Kong also leads Sin-gapore on business efficiency, in-cluding productivity and manage-ment practices, according to IMD.

Making the top five of the list is still an achievement though. Singapore was ranked third on the IMD’s list last year, its highest level in the past five years. It’s only surpassed Hong Kong once in that period, in 2014.

“It’s not that Singapore did something wrong, or that they must do things differently,” said Christos Chabolis, the Lausanne, Switzerland-based chief econo-mist at IMD World Competitive-ness Centre. — Bloomberg News

MARKETL&T picks banks for subsidiary’s share saleMUMBAI: Larsen & Toubro (L&T), India’s biggest builder of roads and power plants, has picked advisers to prepare an initial pub-lic offering (IPO) of about Rs10 billion ($150 million) for its sub-sidiary L&T Technology Services, people with knowledge of the matter said. The Mumbai-based conglomerate is working with Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bank of America and JM Financial on the engineering-services unit’s list-ing, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. An IPO filing with India’s capital markets regulator could come as early as July, they said.

Two separate listingsLarsen is preparing two separate listings as it seeks to monetise some of its operations, which span finance, ship building and nuclear power. The company also plans to list its software-services unit, Larsen & Toubro Infotech, as soon as next month after assessing de-mand and receiving relevant ap-provals, the people said.

Both offerings are expected to be completed by March next year, they said. Larsen Chairman A.M. Naik told reporters on May 26 that the company would decide in a week on the timing of the software division’s listing.

Larsen shares fell 1.3 per cent to Rs1,491.45 as of the close in Mum-bai trading on Thursday. The stock has gained 17 per cent this year, compared with a 2.5 per cent ad-vance for the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex index.

Larsen declined to comment in an e-mailed response. L&T Tech-nology Services, with more than 10,000 employees, advises makers and distributors of medical devic-es, phone equipment, automobiles and aircraft, its website said. I N I T I A L P U B L I C O F F E R I N G Lenovo turns to phones with novel technology for growth

SAN FRANCISCO: Lenovo Group is adding experimental technologies to its smartphones in a bid to grow its business, trying to overcome declining personal computer shipments and a com-petitive mobile market.

The Beijing-based company said on Thursday that it will intro-duce a phone that uses a Google sensory technology named Tango, and announced two new Motorola handsets that can be augmented with additional equipment via 16 “magic dots” in their backs. At an event in San Francisco, the com-pany also announced a partner-ship with networking vendor Ju-niper Networks to extend its data center unit.

“Over the past two years Lenovo has been transforming, making

major acquisitions in mobile and infrastructure to expand beyond our core PC business,” said Yuan-qing Yang, the company’s chair-man and chief executive officer. “I was told we’d better launch some-thing pretty exciting.”

Lenovo is looking to phones for growth to offset a struggling PC market. Lenovo was the largest single vendor of PC shipments in the first quarter of 2016, ac-cording to IDC, but shipments declined 8.5 per cent on a year earlier. The company acquired the Motorola smartphone business for $2.8 billion in 2014 to help it hedge against this weakness, but turning those phones into major sales has proven to be a challenge.

Competitive marketLenovo faces an uphill battle

trying to regain its share of the mobile phone market against re-newed competition from local ri-vals like Huawei Technologies. Its smartphone sales in China fell 85 per cent compared to a year earli-er, Jenny Lai, an analyst at HSBC, wrote in a note to clients following Lenovo’s fourth-quarter results in May. Lenovo reported a full-year loss of $128 million compared with net income of $829 million a year earlier. “Lenovo will step up its mobile investments in order to achieve targets,” she said. “Fi-nancial year 2017 will be a tran-sitional year for Lenovo with flat shipments and continued operat-ing losses in mobile business.”

To boost sales, Lenovo is turn-ing to new technologies. The com-pany will release a phone called

the Phab2 Pro in September that uses technology from Alphabet-subsidiary Google called Tango. The system lets the phone host augmented reality applications, like software to help people navigate the world, play virtual domino and dinosaur games, eas-ily measure spaces in households and add in three-dimensional models of furniture. With the Phab2 Pro, Lenovo will be the first company to field AR technology on smartphones without the need of a headset, separate device or at-tachment to a powerful computer. The cost of the Phab2 Pro will start at $499.

“Lenovo is creating a new kind of AR experience that is more portable, more practical, and will be even more popular,” Yang said.

The company also will release two new Motorola handsets, the MotoZ and MotoZ Force, that can be upgraded with additional equipment via what the com-pany is calling Moto Mods. This lets people easily add battery power, speakers, projectors and other hardware capabilities to its phones by fastening the equip-ment with 16 “magic dots” — or high-powered magnets — to the phone’s back.

“Now your phone is not just your phone,” Yang said. With Moto Mods, the phone “can trans-form into whatever you wanted it to be or needed to be,” he said.

Lenovo is not alone in seeing value in adding more capabili-ties to its smartphones. Google plans to do the same via an in-development technology called Project Ara, that lets consumers swap different capabilities of their phones in and out according to their needs. And Lenovo believes that these new phones will drive further demand for its enterprise business as well.

“Of course all of this connectiv-ity creates huge new demand for cloud infrastructure that is safe, reliable, easy to access, and of course easy to deploy and easy to expand,” Yang said. — Bloomberg News

Chinese companies strengthen Virgin Australia grip, nipping Singapore AirSYDNEY: Chinese companies strengthened their grip on Virgin Australia Holdings as a second conglomerate bought a stake in the carrier, handing a blow to key shareholder Singapore Airlines.

Nanshan Group will buy 811 million shares, or about 20 per cent of Australia’s second-largest airline from Air New Zealand, the Auckland-based carrier said on Friday. At a purchase price of 33 Australian cents apiece, the sale would value the stake at about A$268 million ($199 `million). Nanshan’s assets stretch from aluminum to property and in-clude the two-year-old Qingdao Airlines.

Code-share allianceHNA Group, the owner of Hainan Airlines, last month said it plans to buy 13 per cent of Virgin Aus-tralia and struck a code-share al-liance with the Brisbane-based airline. While the Australian car-rier is now better placed to tap the Chinese travel market, its dispa-rate shareholders — among them Etihad Airways — may be harder to manage.

“It’s not a marriage made in heaven,” said Neil Hansford, chairman of Strategic Aviation Solutions, a consultancy firm north of Sydney. “You’ve got two

sophisticated legacy-type carri-ers in Singapore and Etihad mix-ing with startup Chinese. I think it would be a very difficult board table to sit around.”

Singapore Airlines in an e-mail declined to comment and a spokesman for Etihad in Sydney had no immediate comment. The sale is subject to regulatory ap-provals from Chinese authori-ties. Air New Zealand was advised

by First NZ Capital and Credit Suisse. Virgin Australia shares climbed 7.1 per cent to 30 Aus-tralian cents, valuing the carrier at about A$1.04 billion, after Air New Zealand said Nanshan plans to support the outcome of Virgin Australia’s current capital review. Nanshan is buying the Virgin Australia shares at an 18 per cent premium to its Thursday closing price. Air New Zealand shares

jumped as much as 3.9 per cent in Wellington and Singapore Air shares were little changed in the city-state.

Unique shareholdingIf the deal is approved, Nanshan Group will hold almost as much as the other partners, making Virgin Australia’s shareholding unique with four airlines as key support-ers. Based in Longkou in China’s Shandong province, the Nanshan Group also has interests in fabric and garments, real estate, finance, education, tourism and healthcare, according to its website, which mentions Shandong Nanshan Alu-minum as its sole listed unit.

Last month, billionaire Chen Feng’s HNA Group said it wants to raise its holding to 20 per cent over time. After issuing new shares to HNA Group, Singapore Air was to hold 20.1 per cent stake and Etihad 21.8 per cent, according to the Aus-tralian carrier. After the Nanshan transaction, Air New Zealand will be left with 102 million shares, or the equivalent of a 2.5 per cent holding in Virgin Australia.

Chief of Embraer makes surprise exitDALLAS: Embraer said Frederi-co Curado will step down as chief executive officer after nine years at the helm, in an unexpected depar-ture from the Brazilian planemak-er as it faces stepped-up competi-tion in the regional jet market.

The company’s commercial avi-ation boss, Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, will succeed Curado, 54, and the transfer of executive du-ties will take place next month, the company said in a statement on Thursday. A full transition will oc-cur by the end of the year.

The executive shift catches the Brazilian planemaker at a critical time, as it works to certify the first of its E-Jet E2 family of jets. The upgraded regional aircraft face an array of new competitors from Bombardier’s C Series to Mit-subishi’s MRJ and China’s Comac C919.

“With the E-2 just flying, it’s pretty extraordinary,” Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst with Teal Group, said of the lead-ership change.

Curado’s exit is part of a “planned transition,” said Saulo Passos, a spokesman for Embraer.

The Sao Jose dos Campos, Bra-zil-based manufacturer is the lat-est aerospace company to revamp its leadership amid market chal-lenges and heightened pressure from new entrants.

Spirit AeroSystems Holdings, Boeing’s largest supplier, an-nounced on Wednesday that CEO Larry Lawson is retiring at the end of July. New leaders have taken the reins of Boeing, Bombardier, Rolls-Royce and United Technologies in the last two years.

Embraer has tumbled 39 per cent this year compared with an 18 per cent gain on Brazil’s bench-mark Ibovespa index. A strength-ening currency in the South Amer-ican country may cause some “cost headwinds” this year, Curado said in April. The real’s 17 per cent ad-vance against the dollar is the big-gest this year among 16 major cur-rencies tracked by Bloomberg.

The company saw strong sales gains in the last decade as major US airlines shifted more flying to regional affiliates and then traded out cramped 50-seaters for Em-braer’s more spacious jets. But Embraer saw market momentum shift as United Continental Hold-ings struck deals with Boeing this year and Delta Air Lines snubbed the E2 for Bombardier’s C Series planes. During the first quarter, Embraer didn’t record any jetliner sales, according to data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence.

OOM

COLD COFFEE IS BOOMING IN THE US; NOW EVERYONE IS PILING INCoffee makers from global giants JAB and Illy to smaller upstarts such as High Brew, La Colombe and Chameleon Cold-Brew are putting their brews on ice. They’re introducing high-end ready-made chilled bottled and canned coffee, betting US grocery shoppers will embrace yet one more way to get their caffeine jolt. Coca-Cola, Dr Pepper and other beverage makers are also jumping in. And Starbucks, which has long dominated packaged cold coffee, is also introducing new chilled brews.

While sugary iced-coffee concoctions, like Starbucks’ Frappucinos, have been popular for years, baristas and coffee bars are seeing an increasing demand for more sophisticated iced espressos and lattes. Many now say they serve more cold coffee than hot — even during winter. For the fourth quar-ter of 2015, Starbucks reported a 20 per cent increase in iced drink sales nationwide following its introduction of a new cold brew coffee in its retail stores. Now, coffee makers are making a push for getting more of those high-end, lower-calorie and less-sugary cold brews and lattes on store shelves.

“When given a choice, people tend to make the healthier, better-for-you choice as long as it’s within a reasonable cost premium,” said Chris Campbell, the founder of Chameleon Cold-Brew, an Austin-based company with sales growing at triple-digit rates.

Canned or bottled ready-to-drink coffee is a natural evolution flowing from a consumer land-scape awash with premium coffee at ubiquitous Starbucks and countless independent coffee bistros. The US ready-to-drink coffee market has been growing by double digits annually since 2011, and Euromonitor International expects the market to reach nearly $3.6 billion by 2020. The global market stood at $18 billion in 2015, according to Euromonitor.

Michael Butterworth, the co-creator of the Coffee Compass blog, says the cold coffees on US grocery shelves now “have a long way to go” in terms of quality and taste. “But there’s a proven market for these products and you’re going to see more and more of them.”

When the beverage industry looks to the future, it sees US consumers craving ready-to-drink coffee at levels approaching those in Japan. That country boasts the largest such mar-ket in the world, according to Andrea Illy, chairman and chief executive officer of Illycaffè. Coca-Cola, which partners with Illy in the US and other countries, sells more bottles and cans of coffee than anyone else globally, largely due to sales in Japan.

Foamed latteThere’s been a recent burst of ready-to-drink-coffee deal making and product launches. Starbucks, which teams with PepsiCo for its grocery store coffee drink offerings, is intro-ducing new sweetened and unsweetened bottled black coffee and cold brews this sum-mer. Peet’s Coffee & Tea, owned by JAB Holdings, now sells cold brew canned coffee since agreeing to acquire Stumptown Coffee in October 2015. La Colombe, backed with funding from Chobani yogurt founder Hamdi Ulukaya, will be releasing its canned latte later this year in grocery stores around the country. The drink, which foams like a hot latte when poured, sold briskly — 10,000 cans in its first hour — when offered online in March.

Last month, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, entered into a distribution deal with with High Brew Coffee, an independent beverage company started by David Smith. For Smith, who’s counting on Dr Pepper for its “merchandising muscle,” coffee is a sec-ond act. He co-founded Sweet Leaf Tea Co., which was sold to Nestle Waters North America in 2011. Smith discovered the virtues of cold-brew coffee while on a seven month sailing trip with his wife and two young children a few years ago.

Caribbean crossingCrossing from island to island in the Caribbean, often at night, Smith found stand-ard coffee wasn’t giving him the jolt he needed to stay alert. So he bought a cold-brew kit on Amazon. Though it takes 12 hours to make cold brew, it delivers twice the caffeine punch. “A lightbulb went off,” said Smith. “If somebody came up with a ready-to-drink, shelf-stable, cold-brew coffee that was conveniently packaged, it would really be a great addition to what is available to consumers out there today.”

The resulting product, High Brew Coffee, hit grocery store shelves in 2014. Sales grew 270 per cent in 2015, said Smith, though he declined to provide dollar sales. One of the promises of canned and bottled coffee is that it’s portable and durable and opens up the universe of high-end coffee to folks who may not live around the corner from a hipster coffee bar, said Chermelle Edwards, creator of a blog called Coffeetographer.

“Maybe you want to have a six-pack for your picnic You don’t go to a coffee shop and buy 10 coffees for your party, but you’ll buy cold brew. It’s like

beer, like craft beer,” said Edwards. — Bloomberg News

REDUCE CHEMICALS FROM YOUR LIFEHave you ever wondered why you have so many cleaning materials? Many try to escape those chemical overdoses by believing in any tip found on the Internet about cleaning with natural ingredients or using

ingredients you already have at home. But what is true and what is completely absurd?

Oil removes sticky residues on doors — TRUE

Stay away from chemical label solvents, the fatty acids in butter and oil dissolve sticky patches most effectively.

Simply mix olive oil with a pinch of salt in a bowl and apply the mixture with a cloth

onto the affected area. Rub and the glue disappears like magic. Afterwards, wipe

the area clean with a bit water and a little detergent.

5

Cleaning and unclogging pipes with coffee — FALSE

Coffee grounds are not sandpaper — it won’t rub the tube free from leftovers,

rather, the grounds mix with the remains, clog it even more and swell into a proper

plug. A better solution is to place four teaspoons baking soda in the sink, then add a cup of vinegar. If it fizzes and bub-

bles arise, rinse hot water onto it and your pipe will be free again. If not, repeat the

process again.

1Plants help to get rid

of dust — TRUEDust is particularly annoying and ugly

but plants can help you out. They not only fill the room with style and aesthet-

ics, but also filter the pollutants from our air and provide us with fresh oxygen.

Especially effective are ferns and orchids, which catch the swirling dust in the air, so

that the leaves must be only wiped with a damp cloth. Now you can take a deep

breath again in your home.

2Wearing gloves

is hygienic — FALSEWe slip into our cleaning gloves to protect

ourselves from bacteria and germs but the scrunched surface and the humidity

inside provide a perfect habitat for bacte-ria. Therefore, keep your gloves flawless

and dry. Place them after each use in hot water with two teaspoons of vinegar and a little detergent for 10-15 minutes.

Afterwards, just dry them thoroughly and dry them in a cool place.

3Toothpaste for clean silver jewel-

lery and silverware — TRUEIs your silver chain turning slightly grey and doesn't shine anymore? Rub your silver jewellery with some toothpaste

(not gel) and use a toothbrush to get into the smallest corners. After that, dip the chain or the cutlery in warm water. To-

gether with the paste, the oxidised silver particles will be washed away and your

jewellery will be shiny again.

4

Vinegar as an all-round cleaning material — FALSE

Vinegar works on almost everything, especially when it comes to decalcifying appliances or making surfaces hygienic. However, it should not be over glorified, especially, when it comes to using it on

natural stone surfaces such as granite and marble, as well as pipes or rubber seals,

for which vinegar is unsuitable, even dangerous. The acid contained in vinegar reacts aggressively onto those materials

and destroys the surfaces and thereby their function. Helpling.com

8Lemon juice makes your extractor

fan shine again — TRUEOur extractor fan — not only

a magnet for odours, but also for fat stains. In order to get rid of the sticky spots, half

of a lemon does the trick: Simply cut it and rub it over the metal. The acid easily

removes fats and oils. If the spots are especially stubborn — pour a few drops of detergent on a cloth and rub gently above

the stains. Do not use a stainless steel sponge, this only scratches your hood and

misses the real target.

7Remove stains with

sparkling water — TRUEAnother stain on the carpet? Fast ac-

tion: Grab your bottle of sparkling water, because the contained carbon dioxide dissolves colour and tannins from the

fibres (this doesn't work for fat or oil). Im-portant: Once you have drowned the spot in the mineral water, you have to use a dry and absorbent cloth in a circular motion to take the stain away — always dapple,

never rub. But of course, the effect always depends on the type of the stain.

Life in a CaveCaves can be found all over the world. Some caves are open to the public, while others are wild and untouched. Sometimes called caverns, caves are natural hollows in the Earth, usually created by water or wind. Prehistoric humans sometimes lived in caves. Archaeologists have found many an-cient artefacts and paintings in caves.

Most plants need sunlight to grow, but some plants, bacteria, and fungi use the energy from de-caying matter instead of light. These can be found in the darkest caves.

A variety of animals make caves their homes, some seasonally, others permanently. Bears, rac-coons, and other animals nest and shelter in caves. Many species of bats live in caves. Cave floors are often slippery with guano (bat droppings). Bats and other animals that leave the cave for food are known as trogloxenes.

Animals that always live in the darkest parts of a cave are called troglobites. Some salamanders, fish, insects, and spiders are troglobites. Many of these animals are blind and have no pigmentation to their skin, appearing transparent.

Caves take many thousands of years to form; some are 50 million years old. As long as a cave has water, it is considered living and ever-changing. A cave without water does not change and is consid-ered dead. Some caves have areas with and without water.

Scientists who study caves are called speleolo-gists. Amateur cave explorers are called spelunkers; these adventurers enjoy testing their strength, skill, and nerve while exploring caves.

Limestone caves have rock formations called speleothems on the walls, floor, and ceiling. Sta-lactites hang like icicles from the ceiling, and sta-lagmites grow up from the ground. These forma-tions are created by calcite deposits. Speleothems often have other minerals in them that make them [email protected]
