Dear Parents, Staff and Children,
Welcome back to the start of Term 2.
Sad News
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the
sudden passing of Mr. Bert Hildebrand. Bert
was very much a part of the Sunbury West
community having worked as a Casual Relief
Teacher for us over the past 13 years, and also
as the grandparent of students who have only
just recently moved on to secondary school.
Bert has a long history in education, having
worked across a number of Sunbury schools.
He was also the founding Principal of Killara
Primary School. Bert was highly respected and
will be greatly missed by students, families
and colleagues. We extend our sincerest
condolences to Bert’s family.
FOSW
Thankyou to FOSW for their coordination of
the Easter Raffle which resulted in the school
raising $1,220. Thankyou to the many families
who donated Easter Eggs for this fundraiser
and to all who purchased tickets.
The 5c Frenzy was also a hit, with $594.20
being raised.
We look forward to our Frankie and Co Pop Up
Shop on Friday 3rd May. Come one, come all
and invite your friends along for a glass of
bubbles, nibblies and some shopping fun.
Quickly on the heels of this will be the
Mothers’ Day Stall on the 9th May. We
appreciate the support of the many parents
who have offered to come along and help on
the day.
Prep Information Sessions
The 2nd of May sees the start of our Prep
Information Sessions for our 2020 enrolments.
This is an evening session, commencing at
7pm in the library. We then have two day time
sessions on the 13th of May at 11.30am and the
15th May at 9.30am.
Recently, we sent home a survey to parents
asking for feedback regarding our Prep
Transition processes. Thank you to the many
parents who took the time to reflect upon
what our school does well as and also some
suggestions for the future. We are very
grateful not only for the positive feedback,
but also for the comprehensive responses
received. We are always looking for feedback
on how we can improve and best meet the
needs of our incoming families and students
during this time.
Staffing
As many parents are aware, Mr Iain Sparrey
has been in the caretaker role for our PE
program for most of Term One while we
undertook the recruitment process. We are
pleased to announce that Mrs Fiona Davies,
who is a regular Casual Relief Teacher at our
school, has been appointed and will take up
the position at the commencement of Term
Two.
We thank Iain for his support in sustaining the
integrity of the program during this interim
period.
We also welcome Ms Holly Overend and Mrs
Nikki Miller, who have recently been
appointed to Education Support roles. We
look forward to having these staff on board,
as part of our Sunbury West Team.
Regional Swimming Finals
Congratulations to Ben Jeal, who moved on to
represent the Division at the Regional Finals.
Ben came 4th in his 50m freestyle event with a
2 second improvement on his personal best
time. He came 6th overall for the region. This is
an outstanding achievement and we look
forward to hearing more about Ben’s
swimming success in the future.
Athletics
All students in Years 3 - 6 participated in the
House Athletics on the 15th March.
Competitors across all age groups took part in
the range of events earning points for their

Harmony Week
The school enjoyed many wonderful activities to celebrate
Harmony Week. Children participated in the House Mates
program, engaging in fun activities relating to Japanese craft
and culture. On Harmony Day all year levels participated in
the Stomp Dance Company incursion culminating in a
performance at the end of the day, with many parents taking
the opportunity to attend and join in the fun. Of course, all
this was topped off with our Harmony Day special canteen
lunch.
Thankyou to Mandy Langman, Ako Sensei and Allison Crozier
for coordinating the above mentioned activities and to all
staff, students and parents for contributing to their success
and sense of community spirit.

Grade 1/2
Yellow Day JSC Fundraiser for the Cancer Council
To raise money for the Cancer Council Sunbury West students dressed up in yellow and made a gold coin donation.
The grade 1/2 students held a mini parade to model what they dressed up as.
Children had lots of fun displaying their head bands
that they made in class and yellow outfits.
Making ANZAC Cookies with 3/4’s On Friday 26th April 3/4O and 3/4T made
ANZAC biscuits. We made them in small
groups. The ingredients we used were oats,
butter, sugar, coconut, flour and a mixture of
bi carb soda and hot water. We mixed them
altogether and then baked them.
The cookies were delicious and we all enjoyed
making the cookies.

Harmony Day
It seems we’ve had a summer and autumn of highs and lows across Victoria. Regard-less of the temperature, the UV is still above three (the level when sun protection is
recommended) so the five SunSmart steps need to remain on the agenda until the end of April.
To be sure, check the daily local sun protection times on the free SunSmart app or widget. The SunSmart app has been updated and now features 600 locations across
Australia including live UV data from 12 major cities and a four-day forecast of sun pro-tection times and weather information, sourced from the trusted Australian weather
agency, the Bureau of Meteorology. Visit http://www.sunsmart.com.au/tools/interactive-tools/free-sunsmart-app for more information.

pate in the life of the community benefiting everyone. Sunbury West Primary School will ensure
that the children in its care are protected to the best of its ability and in line with their duty of care
and the compulsory child safe standards. Our Childsafe policies and procedures can be found on
