ORIGINS➔ c1570-1200 BC ; the Germanic tribes probably

occupied modern day Danish peninsula, lower

Sweden, and northern Germany

➔ c750 BC ; there is archeological evidence that

Germanic tribes lived in southern Scandinavia

and along the North Sea and Baltic coasts

● the tribes developed a democratic

warrior culture and as they migrated

south that created a kingship

● the most significant aspect that the

Germanic tribes had was the

comitatus, which was a voluntary

warrior group based on loyalty to

the king

400 - 500

➔ 409 ; Vandals (a Germanic Tribe) make their way south, destroying everything in their path until

they settle down in Spain for a number of years

➔ 451-452 ; The Germanic and Roman troops teamed up to stop Attila from invading Italy and

France

➔ 455 ; The Vandals (the ones that stayed up north) went down to Rome and destroyed the city.

This is where we get the word vandalism.

➔ 496 ; King Clovis organized his tribes under the Christian religion.

➔ 400 - 500 ; The Germanic tribes are being pushed towards the west due to the eastern tribes,

like the Huns.

500 - 600➔ 507 ; Alaric II was killed by King Clovis single

handedly at the Battle of Vouille.

➔ 535 - 553 ; The Ostrogoths were conquered by

Rome in the Gothic War, which devastated

Italy.

➔ 553 ; The Ostrogoths and the Byzantine fought

five great battles before the Ostrogoth king was

killed.

➔ 568 ; The Lombards moved down to northern

Italy and gained the country easily due to being

ravaged by war and the plague.

➔ 575 ; The Lombards moved down to the

southern peninsula of Italy

600 - 700➔ 604 ; A truce was made between

the Lombards and the Italian

government

➔ 622 -627 ; The Avars were

appeased and Emperor Heraclius

got a victory near the ruins of

Ninevah.

occupy the Dalmatian islands

➔ 687 ; Pepin set himself up as a

major dumas under the Frankish

kingdom

➔ 752 ; Pepin the Short is recognized king by the pope

➔ 774 ; Conquests of Charlemagne start

➔ 789 ; Vikings begin attack on England

➔ 825 ; The Mercian King was overthrown by a

West Saxon

➔ 843 ; Frankish empire divides

➔ 871 - 899 ; Alfred the Great creates a

system of government and education that

unifies the Anglo-Saxon states

➔ 911 ; Viking chief Rollo forms a treaty with King Charles.

Rollo converts to Christianity and is granted Charles’

named Emperor of Rome

➔ 981 ; Erik the Red discovered Greenland
