PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The Victorian Education Excellence Awards, now in its 12th year, showcases the outstanding contributions made by teachers, principals, business managers and education support staff in Victorian government schools.

Forty-one finalists have been announced across 14 categories for the awards, including individual and team efforts, partnerships with families and communities, curriculum innovation, disability and additional needs, and indigenous education.

This year we have been listed as a finalist in 2 categories; Curriculum Innovation and Outstanding Partnership with Families and Community.

It is a huge honour for all the staff, parents, community groups and students who are involved with our TAP program. It recognises and validates the hard work of the TAP steering committee and the many supporters of this outstanding program.

The awards showcase the very best of what is happening in schools across Victoria and to be listed as one of those schools is a real honour for me, as Principal.

Our program wouldn’t be as successful as it is without the dedicated work of our high-performing professionals and dedicated community support. Thank-you.

Next week is Education Week, please come in and find out a little bit more about our school at the P-6 ‘Open Morning’ on Tuesday and the ‘Timboon On Display’ held on Wednesday evening starting at 7:00pm.

CONNECTING AT SCHOOL

Being connected at school is not about having mobile phones and computers. It’s about knowing you can get support, that you will be listened to, and that you can work together with school staff to help your child learn and develop. Working together to care for children is the best way for schools and parents/carers to support children’s mental health.

When schools and parents and carers work together, children find it easier to understand what is expected from them and are better able to manage. They have fewer behaviour problems and do better at school

When parents and carers are connected to school it helps them get support when they need it. Support may come from talking with teachers or other school staff, or from making connections with other parents and carers. Schools help families to connect through having lots of different activities that parents and carers can get involved in

Being connected to the school helps keep parents and carers informed. Parents and carers who are informed about what their children are learning at school and about opportunities to get involved are able to support them better at home

School is a place for adults to make new friends too!

Having opportunities to get to know other parents and carers, to find out how to support your children’s learning, or to get involved in class activities can help parents and carers feel connected to the school.

Good luck to our school in this week’s Education Excellence Awards

And remember:

Open Morning

Tuesday 20th May

All welcome between 9 am and 11am

Year 10s at World Vision Global Leaders Convention Last Thursday nine Year 10 students (Ahliya, Darcy, Kate, Maddie, Matthew, Robert, Taylah, Teagan, and Shanae) and Mrs Frazer caught the VERY early train to Melbourne for the Global Leaders Convention run by World Vision. We listened to inspiring speakers who told us of their passion to help those who suffer from malnutrition in Third World Countries. We watched videos that showed us the everyday life for these people and heard about the plight of children in Rwanda. This year the money raised from World Vision’s 40 hour famine will go towards sustainable programs in Rwanda. We all returned from our day in Melbourne inspired to lead the 40 hour famine (15-17

th August) at Timboon.

Student photo ID cards are available for students in years 7 to 12 from the office. $5 each.

SECOND-HAND UNIFORM SALE

The next second-hand uniform sale will be held on Friday 23rd

May (1:00- 1:50pm in the SEU building.) For enquiries please call Katrina, 5598 3443.

LIBRARY NEWS The library is currently a busy hive of activity. We have our Book Fair displayed this week and open for sales next week. The money raised from the book fair will be used to purchase books for our students and for the children that we visit in the orphanage in Vietnam. Tuesday May 20

th, is our P-6 open morning. Parents will be able

to enjoy a “cuppa” in the library and at 11.30 participate in an information session run by Nicole Lucas from the Corangamite Library on using all their on-line resources and their website. Nicole is also available to work with people individually. It is advisable to ring the library on 5598 3394 if you wish to book an individual session. Wednesday May 21

st is National Simultaneous Story Time. Port

Campbell playgroup will be visiting for a special story time and then at 11.00am they will be joining Year 3 students to participate in a Video Conference from Taronga Zoo in Sydney. May is National Family Reading Month, as this year P-6 students are recording the time spent reading at home on their “Holy Cheese” daily record sheet. Students can enter a competition on line after participating in the reading month.

VIETNAM

An invitation is extended to all members of the wider school community to participate in a Vietnam experience. This trip will be organised by the same company that operates the school tours. Their theme is: “Open their eyes. Change their life.” Visit the following website to find out more. http://vietnamschooltours.com.au/

As a result of parent enquiries, we are currently seeking expressions of interest to participate in this group. A minimum of 10 people is needed for the tour to operate. I was so impressed with my experiences last year, that l am travelling with the students again this year as are other staff from last year. Teachers pay their own way and give up their holidays to run such trips and the fact that we are all doing so again this year speak volumes for the quality of the trip.

Life in the Science Room (Primary)

Next week is education week and the theme is “Scientists do amazing things.”

As a whole school activity students from Preps to Year

5 are creating Sustainable Sculptures based on a

science theme. At the end of the week there will be a

Primary School Gallery walk, to view each level’s

creative science sculptures.

On Tuesday‘s open morning the Year 6 classes will be

creating lemon batteries in their science lessons.

Did you know that Victoria has six Specialist Science

and Mathematics Centres that offer programs to

primary and secondary students? In Term 3 both Years

5 and 6 will be going to the Biolab program ‘Biocats’ at

Geelong to explore the science behind sport and

health.

Anne Frazer and Nigel Mottram Primary Science Specialists 3-6 Cross Country Congratulations to all of our Year 3-6 students who competed in our annual Cross Country event, last Friday. The runners were sent off from the start, on a course that took them along the Snake Track and through the streets of town, before finishing with a lap of the school oval. It was wonderful to see so many students really pushing themselves along and trying their very best during the run. All students who ran should be very proud of their efforts. A big thank you must go to all of our staff and parent helpers who supervised at checkpoints along the course, encouraging our runners as they worked their way around the course. It was great to also see a good number of parents running with the students and also cheering them on at the finish line. This sort of support is always appreciated by everybody at our school and helps make these events so successful for all involved. Each of our age group events were hotly contested on the day and the following students finished in first place for their age groups. Congratulations everyone! 9 Year old girls – Tahlia Berry 9 Year old boys – Zac Ellemor 10 Year old girls – Susanna Ryan 10 Year old boys – Henry Stansfield 11 Year old girls – Caprice Baillie 11 Year old boys – Rowan Ferguson 12/13 Year old girls – Anna Cole 12/13 Year old boys – Logan Cuthell

The Sam Cunnington Personal Best Award was also presented to an athlete who strived to achieve his/her personal best, or who encouraged others to do their best. This award was presented to Luke Francis, who provided a lot of motivation and encouragement to his fellow runners throughout the event. Well done Luke! The house competition was very close this year, with Halladale being awarded the annual shield. The final scores were Halladale with 264 points, Callaway on 251 points and Narragoort scored 229 points. Matt Haugh P-6 P.E. and Sport Coordinator

Actuaries are responsible for identifying, analysing and assessing risk. They determine the likelihood of risk to ensure an organisation’s safeguards and they advise on the potential consequences of risk. This is done by creating mathematical models using past data and the actuary’s own knowledge and experience. These models are used to generate future scenarios in order to determine how likely and how severe future risks may be. Actuaries traditionally work in consulting, banking, superannuation, stockbroking, insurance and investment and can also find work in consumer behaviour analysis and developing areas like environmental studies, climate change and genetics. At Monash University you can study actuarial studies as part of the Bachelor of Commerce or the Bachelor of Economics, and at the University of Melbourne in the Bachelor of Commerce. Pre-requisite subjects are 3/4 English (any) and 3/4 Maths Methods. Website of the professional body, Actuarial Institute of Australia: www.actuaries.asn.au/default.aspx. YEAR 7: RAVE – Resilience, Assertiveness, Values and Esteem. From the 23

rd May for 5 sessions.

This program builds awareness in students about resilience, and how we can begin to react differently to situations by becoming aware of our thoughts, feelings and habits. We discuss coping techniques, dealing with conflict, communication, values and ways to build self-esteem and acceptance. YEAR 8: ME, MYSELF & I. From the 30

th April for 5 sessions.

This program follows on from RAVE, and continues to focus on the relationships between the personal self and others using mindfulness, self-acceptance, communication techniques, values, acceptable behaviour from the self and others, self-care and where to go when you need help. The programs are delivered by Leanne Corkran, the Youth Worker and each runs for 5 sessions. Both programs are fun, and provide a great deal of discussion. As a group we build a safe place where people can express their thoughts without judgements. We encourage respect and confidentiality in the students. If you have any questions about either program, or you want to continue this work privately, please contact Leanne at Timboon & District Healthcare on 5558 6000.

Hi everyone, I am travelling to Vietnam again on the 23rd June with a

school group. We are visiting the Bo de Pagoda Orphanage while we

are there.

The orphanage was constructed on site in 1986 and currently there are 151 children (all orphans) and 50 elderly residents who are part of this complex. The all female monks provide shelter and food for the infants. A good majority of this is donated by groups/pilgrims etc. Food stuffs (eg - powdered milk) and basic necessities (nappies, vitamins) are most welcome and necessary.

I would like to take some health related goods with me. Some suggestions for donations include–

Antiseptic cream

Baby formula

Baby nappy rash cream

Children’s Panadol

Toothpaste. Children’s clothing would also be appreciated.

If you can help - please leave in the basket in the staff tea room. You can also leave

donations at the school office.
