Maccaferri Retaining Structures

From gabions to segmental concrete blocks and vegetated reinforced soil

structures, Maccaferri offers a wide range of retaining structures to suit most

engineering, aesthetic and budget requirements.

The latest addition to our range is the Maccaferri Timber Crib system.

Maccaferri Timber Crib is suitable for use in many retaining wall situations from low height landscaping structures to major civil engineering applications. It can also be used as a facing to existing retaining structures where an aesthetically pleasing timber finish is required. Designed to comply with BS8002:1994 - Code of Practice for Earth Retaining Structures, Maccaferri Timber Crib consists of interlocking timber ‘header and stretcher’ elements to form a cellular structure which is then filled with stone. Sustainable timber The Radiata pine timber elements are taken from sustainable forests and have been treated against decay, insect and fungal attack to provide long term durability and reassurance. Treatments exceed the durability requirement in British Standard BS5268 Part 5 also referred to in BS8002. The units are pressure treated with preservative after cutting and shaping. As a managed renewable resource, the forests from which Maccaferri Timber Crib is made, are accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council and audited annually.

Design Timber crib retaining walls are mass-gravity structures; the self-weight of the structure has to be sufficient to prevent it being destabilised by the retained material. The thickness of the structure varies depending upon the local soil conditions, the geometry of the site and the live loads to be accommodated. Timber crib walls are designed with a 1:4 face batter, upon a concrete foundation .

Construction Maccaferri Timber Crib is simple to construct and requires no specialist labour. The lightweight timber units are handled with ease and once the first course is laid, construction progress is rapid. Corners and radii can be integrated without difficulty. The timber cells are then filled sequentially with a clean, graded stone; typically 100mm down to 50mm. Vegetation Maccaferri Timber Crib structures can be encouraged to vegetate by planting creeping and climbing species at the crest or foot of the slope. In addition, ‘grow-bags’ can be inserted behind the front face during filling of the unit. Filled with soil, and seeded with appropriate plants, these can promote vegetation on the face of the structure, provided suitable irrigation is available.

Maccaferri Timber Crib installation overview:

1. Construct concrete foundation; upper surface to be finished at a slope of 1:4 (or as detailed)

2. Position first timber crib header unit with regard to the wall plan, corners etc

3. Position subsequent headers at 600mm centres

4. The first course of header units can be set into the curing concrete to line and level, locking the headers into position

5. Connect timber crib stretcher units into the notches within the header units already in position

6. Minimal nailing may be used at this stage to stabilise the crib assembly for filling

7. Place fill material into the timber crib cells as the crib skeleton rises

8. No more than 3 crib courses to be laid before filling

9. Continue construction in accordance with the project drawings

10. Backfill and compact behind the structure as the filled timber crib wall rises

Stand back and admire your work!
