For sure, we will have high temperatures and the monsoons, haboobs and who knows what else, will come our way. We have many wonderful activities planned. The message this month is simple and yet complex: keep on flying proudly & bravely! Old Glory may occasionally be ‘Faded Glory’...but it’s still Glory! A resident at one of our sister communities has a plaque in her home. It reads: Live Well...Laugh Often...Love Much. Great advice. And to that I’d add: Keep Learning! Because of sacrifices made, we have the opportunity to Live, Laugh, Love and Learn...and that’s a ‘wow’! Be safe & have a great month of July!

Improving Memory TipsMake time for friends and funWhen you think of ways to

improve memory, do you think of“serious” activities such aswrestling with the New YorkTimes crossword puzzle ormastering chess strategy? Or domore lighthearted pastimes—hanging out with friends orenjoying a funny movie—come tomind? If you’re like most of us, it’sprobably the former. Butcountless studies show that a lifethat’s full of friends and funcomes with cognitive benefits.

Healthy relationships: theultimate memory booster?

Humans are highly socialanimals. We’re not meant tosurvive, let alone thrive, inisolation. Relationships stimulateour brains—in fact, interacting

with others may be the best kindof brain exercise.

Research shows that havingmeaningful relationships and astrong support system are vital notonly to emotional health, but alsoto brain health. In one recentstudy from the Harvard School ofPublic Health, for example, researchers found that people withthe most active social lives had theslowest rate of memory decline.

Laughter is good for yourbrain

You’ve heard that laughter isthe best medicine, and that holdstrue for the brain as well as thebody. Unlike emotionalresponses, which are limited tospecific areas of the brain, laughter engages multiple regionsacross the whole brain.

Pay attention to children andemulate them. They are theexperts on playing, taking lifelightly, and laughing.

Declaration DetailsAs freedom rings this Fourth of

July, explore these facts about theDeclaration of Independence.

Initial autograph. John Hancock, president of the ContinentalCongress, was the first to sign thedocument. His signature is thelargest, and the term “JohnHancock” remains a commonexpression for a signature.

Striking script. Historians sayTimothy Matlack, clerk to thesecretary of the Congress, is mostlikely the scribe who wrote out thefamous script using a quill penand ink.

Dirty details. The bottom leftcorner of the document is marredby a handprint whose story andidentification are unknown. It,along with other soiling, has beenleft alone rather than risk damageby attempting to clean it.

Safe storage. During World WarII, the declaration was movedfrom the Library of Congress andstored at Fort Knox. In 1952, itwas transferred to its permanenthome, the National Archives inWashington, D.C., where it ishoused in a state-of-the-art case, designed to protect the antiqueparchment.

Colonial copies. Paper copies ofthe declaration were printed onthe night of July 4 to bedistributed throughout theColonies. Only 26 of theseversions exist today, and most areheld in museums.

Pet Therapy comes in all shapesand SIZES. No matter what stylethey all bring smiles to ourresidents.
