Information Literacy Defined

Shapiro and Hughes (1996) argue for a broader definition that ranges from "knowing how to use computers and access information to critical reflection on the nature of information itself, its technical infrastructure, and its social, cultural and even philosophical context and impact."

Questions we considered• What are the information literacy practices we want to support and

develop in our students, staff, and faculty? • What are the ideal elements of a program for developing

information literacy practices?• What is being done now at CSU to support the development of

information literacy practices?• What is being done elsewhere to support the development of

information literacy practices? What isn’t being done (that should be)?

• What activities should TILT support with other university units to develop information literacy? Which units?

• What would be the best way to form efforts to support the development of information literacy competencies into a coherent, integrated program?
