TILES• Tiles are thin slabs of low melting clays used for various
purposes in engineering constructions.• These give a very pleasing appearance and good service
properties. Some examples are– Roofing tiles – Flooring tiles– Wall tiles – Partition tiles
Roof Tiles• Various types of Roofing Tiles in common use are shown in
Fig. 2.16. (pp 33 to 36) • Roofing tiles have lost their importance due to
– Considerable Mass– Labor consuming manufacture– Erection and Drainage problems– Appreciable Transportation charges

FLOOR & WALL TILESFLOOR TILES• Floor tiles are extensively used in houses and industrial buildings.• These are Durable and Impervious to Water, resist Abrasion well and Wash
easily. • Raw mtrl for mfg Floor Tiles
– White burning Clays– Red burning Clays– Fire Clays– Shales
WALL TILES• Differ from Floor tiles principally in
– Design – Degree of Burning.
• Temperature control– Wall tiles are burned at a comparatively low temperature, – Glazed, and – Fired again in Muffle Kiln, at a still lower temperature

MANUFACTURING• Tiles are made in the same manner as Bricks, but are thinner and
lighter, so require greater care. • ***(If Question comes in Exams about Manufacturing of Tiles, you
will have to write the Process involved in Brick making and then add the following important pts.)
• These are manufactured – from a Clay Mass – with or without ADMIXURES of colouring impurities – by Moulding and – subsequent Burning until Baked, up to about 1300°C.
• The Clay should be – Highly Plastic with – Lean Admixtures and – Fusing agents to lower the Melting Point.
• Moulded in – Auger type m/c – Plunger type m/c
• commonly burned in Continuous Kilns.
